That's Tina Weymouth providing that amazing bassline. She is married to the drummer, Chris Frantz, and you can't forget Jerry Harrison rocking out on keyboards. David Byrne gets a lot of recognition and rightfully so, but the other band members are just as awesome at what they do as well. I'm so glad you did this live version, but if you want another really cool TH video, check out "Nothing But Flowers."
Chris Frantz wrote a book a couple years ago criticizing Byrne for taking more credit than he deserved. Chris Frantz and Tina were also involved in the songwriting .

Don't forget the synth solos from first Bernie Worrell and second Jerry Harrison. If you're looking for more, how about "Girlfriend Is Better" again from this same show.

I've loved the Talking Heads since the first time I heard them. This band, the B-52s and David Bowie all possess that avant garde creativity that actually pulls in people of all walks of life. They are each unique. They are all weird but in the coolest way possible. They all have that rare spark of genius at precisely the right time that just happens because it was meant to be. Lucky enough to see them at Red Rocks, Colorado. Such a great concert. Someone mentioned they came out on stage one at a time, during the first couple of songs, memorable. Thanks for the smile.
I saw Talking Heads perform this song live on August 23, 1980 at the Heatwave Festival at Mosport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. Also on the bill were Teenage Head, the B-52s, The Pretenders, Rockpile, Elvis Costello. Fabulous memories of New Wave's Woodstock.

Amber, you’re the first reactor to this performance I’ve heard to even mention the lyrics! The contrast between the madcap eccentric dance party music, and the dark lyrics is what raises this performance to art. We’ve not had warfare in our homeland since 1865, and Byrne does a poetic job of trying to describe what it might be like in NYC, in the late ‘70’s when this was written. Jay, Byrne is absolutely singing(!) in his own unique style. He never misses a note he goes for, the melody is always there, and he still has the breath to be as weirdly expressive as he wants to be! Not to mention dancing, jogging, rolling on the floor…you know 😆
Not exactly about war but about undercover spies (and I suspect a bit of double meaning about being a celebrity also). "Changed my hair so many times I dont know what I look like..."

The whole ‘Stop Making Sense’ movie is a trip. It’s a work of art that needs to be seen in its entirety. Great 80s artefact. The other one to see is The Band in ‘The Last Waltz’. Both of these actually changed me as a person.
Caught the Last Waltz on TV here in the UK back in the early 80s and taped the soundtrack (pre video recorder). Practically wore out the tape. It spoiled me, I don't really like the album versions of any of the songs from it!
Saw them in FL when this was their touring band. Bernie Worrell, Steve Scales and Alex Weir took what was already a FANTASTIC band and just shot it into the stratosphere live. One of the best live shows I ever attended (second only to Prince).

Their live version of "Psycho Killer," from the Old Grey Whistle Test (an old U.K. music program), is stripped down but phenominal and hard-hitting live Talking Heads. Great stuff!
There is so much great about this song. I want to highlight the back up singers. They bring so much to the table and are fully on board with some of the wackier moments of the performance. I showed my son "Stop Making Sense" when he was in high school. Years later, he said he wanted to dance at his wedding reception like David Byrne does in this song. I'm glad I stopped by your channel. I like the pictures on your walls and you are an adorable couple. Keep up the good work!
Highly recommend "Girlfriend Is Better" from this same live concert video. This features the infamous "big suit"...The physical stamina and conditioning required to perform live like this is extremely high. Near the end, it's one thing for him to jog several laps around the stage; it's another level that the last time around he appears to actually sprint as fast as he possibly can...
Yes yes yes yes 😀 I'm so glad ya both start getting them it shows how far you've come❤️❤️to understanding real music with 🎸🎷 real instruments 😁my all time fave band thanks guys🤩🤩🤩🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴

Great performance and with an added bonus of Two members of the Band Parliament/Funkadelic playing with the Heads…Bernie Worrell (on synthesizer keys) and Lyn Maybry ( on backing vocals she’s the singer closest to David ) As a fan of both the Talking Heads in the late 70’s and Parliament/Funkadelic through out the 70’s as a teenager It was amazing to see the P-Funk and one of most creative bands to come out of NYC’s Lower Eastside music scene (CBGBs) create together in the mid 80s when I was in my 20’s
"Stop Making Sense" is one of the best concert films ever made. I saw it the week it opened. I was sitting on the aisle and at one point, someone kneeled next to my seat...it was David Byrne. 😮 I smiled and nodded at him. Absolutely speechless.
THANKS! THANKS! for finally playing a live version of Talking Heads. He is famous for the "Big Suit" he wears on the same concert...for the song "Girlfriend is Better Then That" His quirkiness in all its glory.
Jay &Amber, You'll love their "Crosseyed And Painless" and "Cities" !!! Two Talking Heads song in same month, great job! edit - Thanks for doing this one!! The Mudd Club and CBGB were NYC clubs where alot of 'new wave' bands played early in their career.
I saw this same tour when it was in Toronto in the summer of 1983 and it was hands down the best concert I have ever been at. And yes, they did keep this energy up the whole two hour show; you physically could not stay in your seat. The bad news was this was also their last tour. David Byrne has toured with a stage show that is pretty unique called American Utopia so you should check out some of the videos of that tour which are pretty unique in their staging.
Love the selection! Love you guys. I tell you, when I feel blue or out of sorts, I watch you guys because you bring so much joy to listening to and experiencing music that's new to you! ❤
I'm 72 years old. I saw this band live twice back in the day. Once with the "Remain in Light" tour in 1981 and once with this tour ("Stop Making Sense") in 1983. Both at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. So much fun. Two of my all-time favorite concerts. Up there with Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell. And, yeah, they did all this choreography when I saw them as well. One of the key players in this band is Bernie Worrell, on the synthesizer all the way to the left. A former member of Parliament/Funkadelic. When I saw them, it was Worrell laying down the basic grooves and hooks, that drove the band. As quirky and unique a musician/human being as Byrne is. Good match.

The thing about a lot of Talking Heads music is that it’s really funk disguised as new wave. They are downright funky, especially live.

Girlfriend is better is fantastic
To say nothing of all the wires and cables he has to not trip over while he is doing that.
Yes yes yes yes 😀 I'm so glad ya both start getting them it shows how far you've come❤️❤️to understanding real music with 🎸🎷 real instruments 😁my all time fave band thanks guys🤩🤩🤩🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
They’ve been really active on Instagram lately - I am praying for a tour!!
At the 1980's dance parties, when the Talking Heads were played, everyone ran to the dance floor. So much fun.
OMG YESSSS FINALLY!!! get ready to be blown away by the sheer energy in this performance! Almost better than the album version! You're reaction to the chorus was hilarious 😄❤ TINA WEYMOUTH the bass player is the GOAT. .... so glad you guys finally watched this and glad you loved it
.
. Watch the whole concert! It's called Stop Making Sense
saw them in '83 at Compton Terrace in Tempe, AZ. Great show!
So happy you guys appreciate them!
Here's an offbeat tune,
Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction!
My Black friends mom says, in a low sharp voice" This aint no party, this aint no Disco" Which for her means, Shit aint EASY, fool.
Ok, if you want something wild and crazy like this was, check out DON'T TOUCH ME THERE by THE TUBES (LIVE version)
The Tubes 🤯😂😂
Great performance and with an added bonus of
Two members of the Band Parliament/Funkadelic playing with the Heads…Bernie Worrell (on synthesizer keys) and Lyn Maybry ( on backing vocals she’s the singer closest to David )
As a fan of both the Talking Heads in the late 70’s and Parliament/Funkadelic through out the 70’s as a teenager
It was amazing to see the P-Funk and one of most creative bands to come out of NYC’s Lower Eastside music scene (CBGBs) create together in the mid 80s when I was in my 20’s
You two are in for a treat! Amber you know their work. Jay you also. Best of luck to your daughter!!
"Stop Making Sense" is one of the best concert films ever made. I saw it the week it opened. I was sitting on the aisle and at one point, someone kneeled next to my seat...it was David Byrne. 😮 I smiled and nodded at him. Absolutely speechless.
I would have passed out. 😅😊
"Stop Making Sense" is being rereleased in theaters in 4K this August (2023).
Have you seen David Byrne’s American Utopia? It’s brilliant Broadway show. Highly recommended.
THANKS! THANKS! for finally playing a live version of Talking Heads. He is famous for the "Big Suit" he wears on the same concert...for the song "Girlfriend is Better Then That" His quirkiness in all its glory.
Listen to take me to the river too
They reacted to that song Feb 25, 2023. Great cover
They did already
Start to finish, "Stop Making Sense" is one of the greatest performances EVER. And the ENERGY of the entire group is mind blowing!
Hence the lyric in this song "this aint no Mudd Clubb, or CBGB...". Love "Cities" also. "Find a city, find myself a city to live in...."
@@elcorado83 thank you. The amazing performance probably distracted them from those lyrics.
Went to see Byrne a couple years ago and the show had this much energy it was fantastic
And now you know why I used this as a workout video back in the day. Love watching Amber morph into a Head head
Listen to one of their last hits: Nothing but Flowers.
They always give you something different!
That is part of the "Stop Making Sense" which is one of the greatest concert films ever.
You made me smile many many times
Tina Weymouth and THAT BASS!
Solid Bass line, great synthesizer work. Guitarist is great, and then you add David Byrne, and the man is full throttled ...
Good match.
Wow such a great reaction! High high energy and impressed Amber about the mike stand!!!! If you want another banger - “And she was” it is sooooo cool -great drums!!!!
