amazing fun, man. Adrian Belew on guitar, too, one of the world masters of experimental guitar work. this whole week has been so fabulously funky with the Talking Heads. thanks so much, Jamel.
Hi Jamel. Love you. Please do Nothing but Flowers by the Talking Heads from their Naked album. The album has an African music influence. It's great. Peace! Stay safe!
Hi Jamal, Here's a request for you. I KNOW you have heard this song before. Chuck Berry in 1958 doing "Johnny B. Goode." This is a fabulous version by the guy who wrote it and first made a hit of it. (He is "the Grandfather of Rock and Roll") Chuck not only sings and plays but he does his famous Chuck Berry Shuffle. I guarantee you will LOVE this! ua-cam.com/video/WLMK9-Ns-TYa/v-deo.html
The guitarist is Adrian Belew, of the band King Crimson. Someday, you should react to one of King Crimson's performances from the TV show Fridays (the songs "Elephant Talk" or "Thela Hun Jinjeet" are classics). He has also played with Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, TomTom Club, and Paul Simon. He is a musical icon in his own right.
It's freaking amazing how it sounds so disjointed at first. You recognize snippets then it all comes together! Adrian Belew is freaking genius. His work with king Crimson is epic!
The lyrics “Won’t you breathe with me” have never had more salience. Talking Heads were simply unequalled. A truly magnificent band. Big shout out to Adrian Belew.
This is like controlled chaos. I loved it. The singers are so impressive. To be able to hold that tight harmony with all that's going on with instruments is truly awesome.
This version is from Rome 1980. This whole concert is online. The guitar player is Adrian Belew. He also was a member of King Crimson, David Bowie,s and Frank Zappa’s band. He is considered one of the best guitar players of all time.
There’s a side project with producer Brian Eno and David Byrne called My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. They taped and looped weather reports, preachers, African rhythms, polyrhythms, static and made instrumentals around the recordings. Predates sampling by a couple of years. Following this, came Fear Of Music and Remain In Light. Those albums incorporated a lot of Afro fusion, funk and Latin rhythms in their music that never went away, the rest of their career.
I had the very first model Sony Walkman and I would listen to 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.' constantly in 1982, walking around at night. My favorite from that album is Moonlight in Glory. I have a cassette with the original tracklist (including "Qu'ran" that was removed from later editions).
That is one of my all time favourite albums and I've bought it over and over again. If it goes missing I must replace it, and I can't be without it for too long. I now live in west Africa with the best music, but still need this from time to time! I can also see how I ended up here and playing drums and kora being directly related to listening to My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts as a teenager nearly 40 years ago.
People told her that at the time too, and told her to use a pick when her fingers were bleeding, but she said "Sid Vicious didn't use a pick so I don't need one either." She's such a badass and so under rated when people talk about 80's bass players.
Fela Kuti live with African 70’s and Ginger Baker is an amazing live album Still have the Vinyl and also got the CD. Was our disco music when I was young
i still love "Nothing But Flowers" with Johnny Marr from The Smiths throwing in some guitar. However the LP, "Naked" didn't see as much popularity as earlier efforts.
_Fear of Music_ is a great album. Lots of great stuff there, including _Cities, Drugs, Animals_ (about a man who thinks that animals are laughing at him behind his back), and especially _I Zimbra_ is a very funky number. _Nothing But Flowers_ is a lovely song. But one of my favourite early Heads songs is _Warning Sign._ That's a strange, creepy song.
I agree with you about the lyrics. The words are a collage, like the beats and the grooves. The line that’s always stood out for me is “All I want is to breathe, won’t you breathe with me.” It reminds us that breathing is so important.
Lol. This song is about being black in America, or gay or even an artist. The boot of the system is always on your neck, no matter how many fancy things you can mask the situation with. All you want is that chokehold to go and breathe.

A big reason for the Heads sound at this time in their career was producer Brian Eno, who was one of the most influential producers in rock history. He has a story and music of his own that you should check out.
The album "Remain in Light" is your age, J. The studio version of this song is mind bending. Check it out. More cohesive than this really good live version.
Yes!!! Thank you thank you thank you Jamel, for playing this. Such a dark, eerie and fantastic perfomance. The Great Curve and Crosseyed and Painless from the same show are also fantastic, but I like the Crosseyed and Painless video with Poppin' Pete just because I love his dancing so much. This band is one of the best ever!
Talking Heads owes a lot to their African, Caribbean, American Southern Folk (native American stomp, spirituals, cajun, etc) and other world music influences. The cool thing is they know it, use the style unashamed, and do it justice.
In their speaking in tongues tour (the one in Stop Making Sense) they featured a lot of members of parliament-funkadelic! They were always so unabashedly proud of their influences!
That amazing lead guitar courtesy of Adrian Belew!! One of the finest guitarists of our time!! Played with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, King Crimson, and so many more!!!

This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) is one of my favorite songs of all time. It is a beautiful message. Not sure which version to suggest because I love it all. Thanks for doing your videos.
Great stuff !!! Epic band !!! The dude at the beginning playing the crazy guitar parts is Adrian Belew. He is known mostly for playing in a band called King Crimson. Check out a song called Frame by Frame off the King Crimson album Discipline. Quite freaky but cool. Thank you brother for the great channel you have created here ! Mike in Canada.....cheers !
Great breakdown Jamel. I came across this song a few weeks ago and have become obsessed with it. So many layers of sound, it is almost too much! Funky is right. So much talent on the stage at once. And Tina! Well, she lays it down, like you said. Thanks for the review man!
That’s the incomparable Adrian Belew playing the “eerie” guitar. He has an extensive solo career, well worth exploring. And he’s played with Zappa, Bowie, King Crimson, The Bears, Laurie Anderson, The Adrian Belew Power Trio...
They are just a joyful celebration and exhibition of music and art. Oh and don’t forget to watch the premiere of David Byrne’s American Utopia tonight on HBO, y’all - it’s a FANTASTIC show!
I was sleeping with my headphones on one night and this song came on. I woke like a shot! It was a clarion call from some long forgottentime I my past. I'm probably a year younger than you, Jamel, but I instantly recognized this sign from my childhood. It was crazy. There are so many layers as polyrhythms going on at the same time on this track.
From the 1980 Album REMAIN IN LIGHT I recall a review comment at the time that likened this song to "listening to 2 different radio stations at the same time". REMAIN IN LIGHT is MY FAVOURITE TALKING HEADS ALBUM. Had it in my SONY Walkman, played 1000 times! 🍒✌🍁✌🍒
I had the blessing to see the Talking Heads in Nashville in 1983 which was about the end of the band's peak IMO. It was a very diverse crowd present for an integrated band that was 100% dancing the entire show (both band and audience that is). I was a Dead Head (and still am), and I thought the T. Heads albums were good, but I had no idea what I was in for. My crew were hippies. Directly in front of us was a row of Rastas with long dreads. Behind was a row of punks with mohawks and safety pins piercing their faces. The rafters of the Vanderbilt basketball auditorium directly overhead were bouncing on their supports due to the dancing upstairs. Yet for whatever reason we all just trusted that it was going to be ok. With such high group consciousness, the entire universe rejoiced!
Well I think they were all pretty much still learning their instruments to be fair. Jerry Harrison had the most experience, having come from playing with the Modern Lovers.
Btw...the salt & pepper shaker looking percussion instrument is called a cabasa. It works by having multiple strings of metal beads wrapped around a wheel that has a metal washboard type surface, and when you spin the wheel, the beads scrape along the rough washboard. They come in different sizes, and the larger they are, the louder they are.
F*ck YES!!! Multi-Layered, crazy high level musicianship, and a relentless Funk Rhythm...all contributing to one hell of a rockin' tune...."The world moves on a Woman's hips."
@@forgalzz7 indeed, Adrian Belew is just as animated, if not more so than the band. High Energy start to finish, and it starts hot, and doesn't let up til they are thru!
@@lestranged its in my top 5 at least. i still love the first 2 LPs, '77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food a lot as well...but, man, Remain in Light is a house afire wall to wall, and the Great Curve is where it peaks.
The lead guitarist in the white t-shirt, who had previously played with Frank Zappa and David Bowie, is Adrian Belew. Later he played with the version of King Crimson that started in the early 80's, and also has his own albums out. The live album this touring band recorded is called "The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads". Especially the songs "Houses In Motion", "Crosseyed And Painless", and "The Great Curve".
@@-R.Gray- ...but truly, all of Kurt's work. i remember talking with you over there. Follow the music, as always. Jamel has always had a spicy menu of songs to listen to again. More musicianship, and interesting music than most reactors, imho. Good to see ya, mate!
Jamel, It just dawned on me that your collection on the wall is growing piece by piece as you do the videos, just like the band builds piece by piece with each song at the beginning of the Stop Making Sense film.
Glad you liked it, Jamel! One thing I love about this performance and this period of Talking Heads is white and black artists making beautiful, powerful music together. Everyone given their space to shine, but being even better together. Bringing together deep funk and avant garde rock and making something innovative and timeless. I wish that kind of unity and cultural collaboration was more common today. And also I don't know exactly what Byrne's lyrics are about in this song, but the refrain "All I want is to breathe" certainly carries a different meaning and weight today. The heat goes on. Oh, and I would second the suggestion of The Great Curve from this same performance. Whereas Born Under Punches is a slow burn, The Great Curve is a speeding funk locomotive.
That's the great Adrian Belew on guitar. He's well known for being a member of King Crimson in the 1980's and also playing with David Bowie in the 80's
The Great Curve, Houses in Motion, Crosseyed and Painless, Once in a Lifetime. David Byrne is Canadian. Talking Heads was the first band to have a full concert played at movie theatres.
Just watched your Born Under Punches reaction. You made a comment comparing them to P-Funk and you couldn't think of someone's name. I'm guessing it was Bernie Worrell the keyboardist from P-Funk... he has performed with Talking Heads and you can see him in Stop Making Sense. Spot on, spot on, spot on.
There are are 2 live performances of the band on youtube in the year 1980. Both of them breath taking. This one in Rome and another one in Dortmund. I guess that's when David came up with the idea of making a film that led to the making of Stop Making Sense. I just wish Andrian was in the film too!!!!
Just discovered this channel and watched all the Talking Heads reaction videos and thought to myself "he should watch one with Adrian Belew in it" Nice work! on the GD videos now
Great reaction to an amazing band that had grown so much since Psycho Killer - bringing in funk and world music elements, and expanding the touring band to support it. They had so much firepower on stage for that tour.
Great job as usual! EPIC song. It would not be an exaggeration to say I have listened to that song hundreds of times. Try "Road to Nowhere" or "Television Man" or "Mr Jones". Talking Heads were always on my party mix. Everyone digs it.
The stunt guitar player is Adrein Belew, former band mate of Frank Zappa, King Crimson, David Bowie. Also has a ton of solo stuff and his Power Trio. STILL lovin your reactions Jamel.
The challenge is to take all that talent so that they all find their place in the mix, so it all blends together without stepping on each others' toes. Pure genius.
“Remain in Light” is a masterpiece, and the touring band for this album was on fire with energy, as this video shows. The other bassist here, by the way, was Busta Cherry Jones (he died young, alas, but made some good contributions to Eno’s first album “Here Cone the Warm Jets” and Byrne & Eno’s “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts”). If you want another Talking Heads-King Crimson connection, seek out the track “Under Heavy Manners”-Robert Fripp on guitar, Jones playing some funky bass, and David Byrne losing his mind on lead vocals.
You should listen to The Modern Lovers. Jerry Harrison, who played guitar in the Talking Heads, was their original guitarist. Astral Plane and Pablo Picasso are some of their great songs. Love your stuff!
Love that you are diving into Talking Heads, man. A real gem of a band. My favourite track from Stop Making Sense is the closer: "Crosseyed and Painless". You really ought to check it out, it is a banger for sure.

And you are missing "Crosseyed and Painless" also from "Stop Making Sense" that is my favorite song from that album, their greatest "Reamin In Light"
He's not ready for that!
Yes yes yes!
I prefer the studio version myself.
@@MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio Me too!
@@hotblackdesiato3022 Here's the Official Video version, though it doesn't actually feature the band.

Great breakdown Jamel. I came across this song a few weeks ago and have become obsessed with it. So many layers of sound, it is almost too much! Funky is right. So much talent on the stage at once. And Tina! Well, she lays it down, like you said. Thanks for the review man!
I’ve never heard this song before! Great song suggestion! They are one of the most amazing bands ever. One of my favorites from them is Stay Up Late.
That’s the incomparable Adrian Belew playing the “eerie” guitar. He has an extensive solo career, well worth exploring. And he’s played with Zappa, Bowie, King Crimson, The Bears, Laurie Anderson, The Adrian Belew Power Trio...
Another one of my favorites from Talking heads. Amazing band.
That was insane, the level of talent on that stage is amazing 👏
I love this song! Amazing Talking Heads deep cut.. Much respect for giving it a listen. Youve been taking on some seriously heady music lately!
Thanks for your reaction to this one! I've always loved this song . It's absolutely positively groovy!
Goes on and the heat goes on. So hypnotic. Thanks for taking me back to 1980.
One of my favourite live performances ever. Watching you watching it felt like we were just vibing together, excellent stuff.
More Talking Heads from Jamel. Dude you are making my week. Thanks again.
They are just a joyful celebration and exhibition of music and art. Oh and don’t forget to watch the premiere of David Byrne’s American Utopia tonight on HBO, y’all - it’s a FANTASTIC show!
Man,your Born 1980? that`s cool Love it to see your enthusiasm in every aspect of Music, your blessed Brother
Bro, thank YOU for keeping great music alive.
From the 1980 Album
REMAIN IN LIGHT
I recall a review comment at the time that likened this song to "listening to 2 different radio stations at the same time".
REMAIN IN LIGHT is MY FAVOURITE TALKING HEADS ALBUM. Had it in my SONY Walkman, played 1000 times!
🍒✌🍁✌🍒
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That bass line...... That guitar.....The Rhythm.... The vocals..... Sublime.
Crosseyed and painless from Stop Making Sense. You will thank me later.
Yes yes yes. That whole album is one of my favorites of all time.
YES
No, the 1980 Rome concert version is far better.
I would be remiss if I did not chime in to wholeheartedly agree with this 😏.
the name of this band is talking heads is so much better than stop making sense
One of the best channels on youtube. Keep up the amazing work.
How can anyone possibly give this a thumbs down??? I love what you are doing...thank you😉🤙
I think that the story is that Tina had never played bass until after forming this band. Cray cray.
I remember hearing that she’d only ever played lead guitar until like 6 months before when she started fiddling with a bass just for fun
@@LtFrankDrebin100 Yeah, her wiki says she started learning guitar at 14.
Well I think they were all pretty much still learning their instruments to be fair. Jerry Harrison had the most experience, having come from playing with the Modern Lovers.
So glad you appreciate the genius of David Byrne and the Talking Heads as much as we do ❤️
Btw...the salt & pepper shaker looking percussion instrument is called a cabasa. It works by having multiple strings of metal beads wrapped around a wheel that has a metal washboard type surface, and when you spin the wheel, the beads scrape along the rough washboard. They come in different sizes, and the larger they are, the louder they are.
This 1980 afro-funk orchestra version of Talkin Heads is as good as it gets. Check out The Great Curve, Rome 1980 if you don't believe me.
F*ck YES!!! Multi-Layered, crazy high level musicianship, and a relentless Funk Rhythm...all contributing to one hell of a rockin' tune...."The world moves on a Woman's hips."
My favorite TH song of all time. The world moves on a woman's hips.
Check out that entire concert, or you have missed something. Thank you, Rai Uno, for filming and the uploaders for preserving it.
Young Lions is a superb Adrian Belew solo LP
The Lone Rhinoceros is my favorite.
@@kilgoretrout3966 Ah, the God Bless You Mister Rosewater fan from W.of Pegasus.
Awesome. Thanks for the upload. That entire album is classic in my opinion
Tina’s hair is perfection in this performance.
the hair?
It's like reaching the summit. Your reactions are worth it.
That's the great Adrian Belew on guitar. He's well known for being a member of King Crimson in the 1980's and also playing with David Bowie in the 80's
Cross eyed and Painless? He’s not ready....
he's ready
Yes! The live version from this concert in Rome.
Oh Yeah!!
Jamel, you absolutely HAVE to do a reaction to this song. As my handle states... 😁
This band was all about taking great songs and arrangements on to the stage to create truly awesome live shows. Saw them twice in the 80's.
Best concert ever! And Adrian Belew on lead guitar. Must watch Crosseyed and Painless from this same 1980 concert in Rome...👏🏼
I know the Talking Heads since 1980. This is the first time hearing Born Under Punches live. Great.
Whole other level. What a class act. What a band. Thanks for doing this. Lol every instrument in the world....😆
The Great Curve, Houses in Motion, Crosseyed and Painless, Once in a Lifetime.
Well, damn! So amazing! I'm not sure if I've heard this before or not.. So thank you.
There are are 2 live performances of the band on youtube in the year 1980. Both of them breath taking. This one in Rome and another one in Dortmund. I guess that's when David came up with the idea of making a film that led to the making of Stop Making Sense. I just wish Andrian was in the film too!!!!
I love this track off the album and I think even I was not ready for this performance.. wow!
They had so much firepower on stage for that tour.
watch the whole performance. Some of my favorite talking heads live..... So good
Great job as usual! EPIC song. It would not be an exaggeration to say I have listened to that song hundreds of times. Try "Road to Nowhere" or "Television Man" or "Mr Jones". Talking Heads were always on my party mix. Everyone digs it.
What a great show of DIVERSITY on that stage. From the Aspergers frontman to a rainbow of color, and WOMEN representing!
I love talking heads, they were a much underappreciated band.
The stunt guitar player is Adrein Belew, former band mate of Frank Zappa, King Crimson, David Bowie. Also has a ton of solo stuff and his Power Trio. STILL lovin your reactions Jamel.
I love your corner makeover. You’ve been hitting some great tunes lately!
The challenge is to take all that talent so that they all find their place in the mix, so it all blends together without stepping on each others' toes. Pure genius.
Yeah, the Heads are one of the greatest ever, live and in studio. This was a fun one!
Wow. This is a new one for me. I knew they did some really different stuff in the early days, I didnt realize how exellent it was
You should listen to The Modern Lovers. Jerry Harrison, who played guitar in the Talking Heads, was their original guitarist.
Astral Plane and Pablo Picasso are some of their great songs.
Love your stuff!
Roadrunner
Hippy Johnny :)
actual title is "I'm straight" but I wasn't when I wrote that :)

Love that you are diving into Talking Heads, man. A real gem of a band.
My favourite track from Stop Making Sense is the closer: "Crosseyed and Painless". You really ought to check it out, it is a banger for sure.
One of my favorite talking heads songs!
Congrats! You have just tackled the most... er... difficult song the Talking Heads cannon.
Thank you, thank you. The groove is everywhere on this track.
This was excellent. The Talking Heads are all talented musicians. Tina right on point as always
My favorite talking heads song it’s just such a perfect way to start off this album and the groove is insane
I love how blown away you are with Talking Heads! They've hit you full kablam! That is how it should be.
