Pinch Me is probably my fave BNL song, it's a catchy upbeat song but it's also thought provoking considering it's talking about depression. It reflects the irony of feeling down and out of place in society, but having to pretend that everything's ok at the same time.

Two of their best and biggest hits came early (1989-1991), the timeless bop If I Had $1,000,000 and Brian Wilson (Brian Wilson of Beach Boys fame eventually covered this song on one of his solo albums). Still didn't know how we were going to afford babysitter, trip, hotel but we'd worry about that later. At the end of the week the station drew from all the ticket winners for a grand prize. All expenses trip, hotel, food everything, plus get to hang out with the band, do their sound check and front row seat at the concert. Yup you guessed it.. we won that!! I might be a bit biased, living just outside Toronto, where BNL are from, and knowing, loving them since they came out in 1990, but these guys are pure fun, and they make amazing music!! This song captures my childhood perfectly (drinking from a hose, lawn sprinkler fun, afternoon naps - and it's under there! Under where - I just made you say underwear!!)
HIGHLY recommend: Enid, Brian Wilson, Call & Answer (a very sweet 'ballad' type song), Jane, Grade 9, If I Had $1000000, and especially, the song that was their first release - a cover by fellow Canadian Bruce Cockburn: Lovers In A Dangerous Time (their version & video is superb!!) Cheers from Canada, eh!

Barenaked Ladies were led by Steven Page and Ed Robertson as a songwriting duo in Canada. They met in school even though they were a year or two apart. Both were in the advanced track and it shows in some very sharp and intelligent lyrics. Basically…they are smarter than most all of us. Also, they are self-admitted nerds to a degree, both to pop-culture and to music. First hit it on Canadian radio in 92. Some of their music is fast and has an almost rap-cadence, but definitely not all of it. Maybe 10-15% of it. They can be folksy, alternative rock, very ballady, but ultimately fun and thoughtful. Unfortunately Steven left the band about a decade ago over differences and legal issues. They did rejoin for a one-night appearance to be admitted to Canada’s Rock Hall of Fame, which seemed to mend some fences. BNL still tours and makes music today without Steven and Ed as the main singer, and others taking lead here and there as well.

@@ColetteMalette1 I don’t know about Disney specifically. It wasn’t a good time though. I’m pretty sure there was more animosity going on than just the arrest. Most bands do have that though over time. They split up in the late 2000’s and BNL made their first album without Steven in 2010. Steven made a few pretty good solo albums himself. I do hope they eventually decide to tour together again or make another album with the OG lineup.

Going thru the motions, everything feels the same, finding whimsy and laughter whenever you can, but ultimately feeling numb and needing someone to pinch you to see if you're awake or asleep because you don't know which state you're in, you put on a smile because you know you're supposed to, but it's not a real smile. So thrilled you got back to these guys! Oh Yeah, definitely a huge fan of this song! BNL was one of the most fun and entertaining groups you could see live in the 90's, hands down! Their antics were just unrelentingly funny and they've got just way too tunes to recommend! I'll just go off the beaten path a bit and recommend one of their older classics "Enid", one of their very early songs, just to be different. Lol

They have a lot of great songs. "If I Had a Million Dollars" is a good one if you like fun lyrics. One I've always liked that wasn't a single is a more serious one they did called, "When You Dream." I bet it'd really hit well for folks who are parents.

This song is in fact from 2000 so not the 90s unfortunately, If you want more awesome BNL songs try the songs BRIAN WILSON, THE OLD APARTMENT, IT'S ALL BEEN DONE, IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS, SHOEBOX OF LIES. That'll get you on your way :)

I remember when Barenaked Ladies were having a concert in Portland during the height of their "Pinch me" "One week" phase, and the local radio station held a contest for fans to win tickets....a little contest appropriately named BareNakedBowling. I have never laughed so hard or been more traumatized in my entire life. Man!!! I miss the 90;s!

You guys need to check out their song If I Had A 1,000,000 dollars. It’s funny because I listened to it today and saying to myself that I wish you guys would do it, and then I see you’re doing BNL song. You guys would love it. I know I’ve suggested it before.

Love this one. It has one of my favorite lines I've ever heard: "I could hide out under there. I just made you say 'underwear.'" Always good for a giggle.
I'm noticing a trend of suggestions for their happy and peppy stuff, which is great. Allow me to buck the trend and say that you need to hear "Call and Answer."

You guys have to check out my old apartment. New subscriber and by far you guys are the best. Love how Amber can really pick up on the meaning of these songs. I grew up in the 80s and nothing compares to that era as far as music. Jay my first concert was Bon Jovi and Ratt at the Spectrum in Philly when I was 15yrs old and I'm with you when it comes to hair band bands. Keep them coming and God bless you and your family
