I’m in my first position as a data analyst. Been doing it for over a year now and it has definitely ramped up in difficulty. I’ve been going through imposter syndrome thinking I’m just not good enough. I’ve done plenty of training and I do great but when my boss presents me with real life data, I instantly freeze and I keep getting stuck and frustrated with every task and request given to me Just wanted to look up some advice and came here. Definitely eased my nerves and I feel like I’ve recaptured a little of my confidence back watching this. Thanks
@@therickestpicklerick hey thanks for responding. Actually means a lot. As a bit of an update, I’m doing better. Still struggling at times but after having a nice one on one with my manager, we’ve been able to kind of create a plan to get me where I need to be with my development as an analyst and it’s been going pretty well. Been doing smaller projects, better direction with my training, working more closely with the other analysts on my team, etc. Yeah I still get confused a lot but I’ve regained some of my confidence back. And I’m hoping it’ll only get easier from here on out!
@@jordannng7180 this is exactly how you do it. You’re doing well. A solid, honest, and professional relationship with your manager goes a long way. Great video Luke. I taught high school chemistry and physics for a few years. I think your approach for learning would be great to incorporate in classes. This would teach students the answer to "why should I learn this?" and teach them to hunt for other tools to learn new skills.
I never thought of it from this perspective, Steve. I would love to share this with those beyond data analysts, this is something I need to look into more! Thanks for sharing this!
I love this and it's something I've been thinking about more over the past few years having worked with people reskilling in remote work. I look back on my career and learning paths, to date, and it was rare that an industry or roles were well outlined (including in a degree program where we only learned well into year 2 what paths there might be ahead, and this was mostly from previous learners). It would be great to see potential/recommended learning paths and career paths more clearly outlined for everyone from younger learners to people throughout their careers to help people make more informed decisions on where to take their learning or careers. Obviously there are great content creators out there making it all clearer, and educators asking great questions, but it would be great to make this more of the norm. Great content Luke and great comment Steve!
What a great video! Unfortunately I noticed it's almost impossible to get 1st job related to data analysis. It's hard when you're good, highly unlikely with zero experience or basics only. Besides, learning those skills takes years while you forced to take different unrelated jobs - it doesn't help with the cv either.
You know what Luke, your videos content giving options and justifying why is like what a famouse doctor do. You are the Dr Eric Berg of data science. Your videos are clear, neat, and organized. No secrets.

Hello Luke, I came across several courses online and noticed that in a majority of them, if you want to become a Data Analyst, you will need to know Excell (pivot tables, V-Lookups, which I actually like), SQL, Tableau, Python, and some others. I guess my question is becoming a Data Analyst still worth pursuing, even in this current job market, especially being an entry-level Data Analyst? If you have the skills and want a job, are there any temp agencies that specifically work to recruit IT personnel such as Data Analysts? Other than soft skills, are there other skills, soft skills, or tech skills, that would benefit an entry-level Data Analysts in the current job market? Other than LinkedIn, what are the best job sites to find jobs to work as a Data Analyst, in-office or remote?
Well, I would certainly network with all contacts to let them know you are looking for a data analyst job. Another possibility is to use an IT headhunter.
Very helpful video coming from someone just starting to learn only within a month ago progress hasn’t been great but this does give a better roadmap of what i should start learning/mastering to better my current life

Hi Luke! This was an great video. I would like to ask you, I am starting my path to be a mechanical engineer, but for the last months I have been enrolled with the Data Analytics Certificate by Google. I discover I would like learning programming and quit the Engineering path, do you think it's necessary to have a University degree to be successful when looking for a job as a Data Analyst?
Thats a good question. To be come a Data Analyst, I don't think you need to have a "Data Science degree" BUT I do think that having a degree is valued by employers; whether it is in a related field or not. My recommendation would be to get the degree (maybe even evaluate switching to something more aligned with your interest as well)

Awesome video like always! I'm curious to know what you think about using Salesforce as part of a DA's toolkit. It didn't come up in your LinkedIn scraping which I'm not surprised. But I wonder, will it become more important in the future as more companies are moving to Salesforce as their CRM?
Yeah Salesforce is a very niche tool, so I don't think it really comes close to the popularity of these other tools. That being said, In my last role we were integrating and starting to use SalesForce. So I do think it's not a bad choice to learn, but may not be applicable to all analysts depending on their company even uses Salesforce or not.

Domain Knowledge: Healt Care, Engineering, Business, Education If you dont use it (learn), you lose it.

Heck yeah! Glad to hear that the skills align with the roles you fill of data analysts! Thanks for the info and for tuning in! 🙌🏼
Hi. David am looking for an entry Data analytics role. If you have anything think of me. Am in New York
I am a Database Developer so naturally my SQL is decent. I also love excel as I build financial forecast and portfolios on free time. So my Excel is also great. I also got quite good with tableau. I landed on a job as both developer and data analyst. As much as I love data, I just never find myself being that good of a data analyst. I love building charts and Excel templates but lack of interest and knowledge in math concepts/models makes it difficult to enjoy the job.
Thanks for sharing this. I can actually relate a lot with your desire to learn new tools but not necessarily have full interest in data analytics.
@Ninja Turtle, if I'm bad a math, and have zero or little interest in it, is data analyst a bad career choice?
I’m exactly the same. I hate maths (sort of enjoy statics) but I like the other aspects of DA
love the way you explained the contents really simple and practical .
Glad you thought so, I try to break it down as simple as possible.
Amazing video! I'm just getting started on my Data Analyst path and your videos make me excited to learn, keep up the good work!!
Great to hear this Jake! Keep up the studies!
I am abdy kany from somalia i started google analytics course in coursera when i watched your video i got general overview of what data analyics is and what is needed before starting it. Thank you very much
Thanks so much for your video. I see so many videos geared towards Data scientists but not too many for analysts. I graduated Sept 2021 and I’m still looking for jobs but needed some motivation to not lose out on what I learned
Well keep up the positive vibes Rhode! I like to use projects to maintain my knowledge, they are also good to showcase to potential employers 🙌🏼
This has been very soothing to me,
I know I'll not manage learning data analytics but I feel like I can
This is great! I am trying to transition from sales/management to data analyst and eventually data science. Great video to help individuals like myself transitioning careers into something they truly enjoy; problem solving.
Your explanation makes complex things easy to understand. Thank you!
I'm completing a "business analysis" mentorship at work and I know its not entirely the same even though the name sounds similar but after working with excel for years I just learned how to use a bit of Power BI and im in love with it. I want to learn how to be THE power BI guy at work now. I hated coding though.
Thanks for sharing this! Love me some Power BI and depending on the company it's such a valuable skill. Good luck with your studies!
Following your guidance, am gone be a data analyst from electrical n electronics tech background. Thank you from Ethiopia !!!.
Heck yeah, you got this!
Thank you for your service Luke! Love the video, very insightful & helpful. I've been a dental hygienist for 18 years. Started working at the VA hospital a few years ago, took a huge career change last year into a national training program for Informatics / Data Analytics. The way you describe the roadmap makes a lot of it sound less daunting! I'm about to start training with SQL too.
Heck yeah!! Glad this video could help make it a little less daunting. Good luck with the SQL training, I think it's such a worthwhile language to know!
Great tips! You start with problems you face at work, find the skills associated, learn it and build a tool with it. I've learned Data Science for Supply Chain with this process.
Absolutely! Thanks for sharing this!!
Hey man great job with this video! I just retired from the Army and am getting my master's in data science, and trying to get a job in data analytics. Your videos are very informative.
So awesome to have a fellow vet following along in my videos! Glad they are helping with the transition, let me know if you have any questions along the way. I think the masters in data science will be great to compliment your prior service!
Love the subtle humour (and everything in between)!
Actively on my job search to become an analyst. Two videos in and I already feel you've helped big time. Thanks for putting out this quality content
Glad the content can help, Adam. Good luck with the job search!
Luke I LOVE the new background and lighting! It really accentuates your features!
Features - get it? Data Science joke (funny!)
Aww Alex 🤗 Thanks you for this!!
And I did get your joke!! (funny!)
I felt very nice watching this video and your tone, voice and attitude helped me off my anxiety about what I have to do to in order to become a data analyst. Thank you so much for this video. You definitely earned a new subscriber here.
I'm currently at the start of my journey to become a data analyst so this is very helpful. Currently enrolled in the Google data analyst certificate program as well as working to improve my excel skills.
Heck yeah, both of these are great to be doing! Keep up the hard work with your studies!
This is incredibly helpful and to echo some other comments, is presented in a way that makes it feel attainable but also not watered down
Aw thank you so much for the kind words Ahna!! 🙌🏼
I am currently working in the field of procurement and learning to become and data analyst. Your video teaches me a lot and I want to thank you for this.
I just decided that data analyst is where I want to go. I have a degree in Science that does nothing for me. This video is perfect and super helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make this!! Sub for you Sir!
Glad it was helpful and thanks for the sub!!
@@LukeBarousse is a bachelors in business data analytics worth it ( the program has machine learning AI business finance and a programming course aswell )or is something general like Econ or Computers better ? I wanna do a masters afterwards most probably in Computer science or IT is that possible after this bachelor's the program is new and the uni is known for tech program
Wow! A UA-camr that doesn't force the subscribe button! Good stuff Luke, I recently have discovered your channel and appreciate your vids. Cheers!
Ha! Thanks for noticing Jake! I mean does anyone really subscribe when you ask them to anyway 😂
I wish I would found your channel sooner. My Excel and analytical skills earned me a promotion from an Electronics Technician to a Business Analyst. I'm currently building adhoc and self-serve analytics in Tableau. I've completed 3 Python specializations on Coursera. However, I haven't used Python in a professional setting yet. Wish I would have learned SQL before Python. That's what I need now to advance to the next level.
I was the same way in my learning journey... sql was one of the last skills that I picked up, so don't worry too much about it. But it's def a skill I recommend
Wow! From electronics technician to business analyst.
I have a college diploma in aeronautical electronics engineering and worked as a noc technician for 5 years, I want to do a degree programme with less math but lead me to a field of data analyst.
I come from Chemical Engineering field and this video just opened up my eyes. Thanks a lot @Luke! Love your work man!
Glad you enjoy it, Tito!
This. Is. Awesome. I wish SME's from other fields (SysAdmin; MBSE; NetEng; Cloud) would do a breakdown. We can somewhat extrapolate from your awesome framework to those fields, but having a SME do it would be insightful.
Hopefully others from other fields join in on this!! Thanks for this David!
This video has been an eye opener, I felt so identified. Thank you.
Heck yeah, Glad this helped; good luck in your learning journey!
Great stuff! I just discovered your channel and last week and enjoy your content. I've been a senior analyst for a few years now and wish I had come across something like this when I first started. Keep up the good work 👏
Aw thanks for this Christopher! WEll truth be told, I wish I would have started this channel sooner. Nonetheless, thanks for the kind words!
hey just a question im curious - can you tell me whats the starting pay for most data analysts and tell me how much u make a year now as a senior ? i want to get into this field
thanks man
you show me that i have to focus first in one skill and than another
I’m in my first position as a data analyst. Been doing it for over a year now and it has definitely ramped up in difficulty. I’ve been going through imposter syndrome thinking I’m just not good enough. I’ve done plenty of training and I do great but when my boss presents me with real life data, I instantly freeze and I keep getting stuck and frustrated with every task and request given to me
Just wanted to look up some advice and came here. Definitely eased my nerves and I feel like I’ve recaptured a little of my confidence back watching this. Thanks
You got this. Imposter goes away once you’ve found your footing.
I struggled with imposter syndrome for six months and it can have adverse effects, so remember wellbeing is owed to oneself. These jobs can feel so ambiguous at times and that’s part of the joy is learning to love learning, the process, and oneself. Where do you feel your current challenges are? How have you grown in the last two months?
This was very helpful Luke and as I start my data journey, it's given me clarity and relieved my anxiety.
Glad it helped Ayodeji!
Thank you so much for this video. I’m currently a high school Math Teacher looking to change careers to a data analyst. I’m currently taking the Google class and was wondering what my next step(s) should be and you gave some really good suggestions. I also appreciate the advice of starting in your domain (so for me, education).
I’m definitely nervous about a career change, but videos like these help. Thank you!
No problem at all! Glad you got use out of this, completely agree about focusing on the domain of education. I've had a few teachers reach out about transitioning, so I know it's possible! Good luck with the Google certificate!
How would you start your data analytics in education? Can you give me advice?I currently teach
,thats why i ask.
hi @Jim Long, There are 12 rules to succeed as a Data Analyst and I found these to be very helpful watching this video link here: @. Hope this tutorial also helps you. Best wishes for your career.
Hi Jim, which google class did you take specifically? Thanks for your input!
@@santhrathambidurai8184 Google Data Analytics (through Coursera).
Thank you for the info! I love learning more and more about excel and other programs as a hobby/ personal enrichment.
I've been stuck on my journey of becoming a Data Analyst. This really gave me clarity on why I was not mastering what I was learning. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! 🙌🏼
No secrets.
Aww thanks so much for this JohnPaul! Glad you enjoy my explanations!
Calling probability and statistics "basic math" is crazy *flashbacks to moment generating distributions
I know! I want to find a way to transition to data analysis from teaching English lol. Like how can people without a math background get into it. What kind of education do i need? All these videos seems to target people who already know everything
I joined not only because you gave excellent content but because you care your viewers .... You always did extra effort to reply every comment .... Thankq bro😊
Aw thank you Sandip!
Always entertained by what I learn from your channel, Luke! Thanks for reinforcing a well-rounded path to learning! I'm gonna use Ken Jee's 66 Days of Data to shape my tech skills. ☺
Thanks so much for this!! The #66days of data science are great to help with sticking and learning with a plan
Hey @paula's picks There are 12 rules to succeed as a Data Analyst and I found these to be very helpful watching this video link here: @. Hope this tutorial also helps you. Best wishes for your career.
The way you go on in this video proves that you’re a professional data analyst thank you
No problem, thanks for watching!
Luke congrats for the amazing video! Thank you for show nice and hard points in your professional evolution.
Thanks so much for the kind words Ponto!
Thank you so much man, all the skill u listed out were infact the skills my company are actually wants
1:32 I'm finishing the 4th course from the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate on Coursera and now I'm doing the build your resume week and I'm realising that I have already forgotten a lot of what I've learned and that is starting to worry me. 😅
2:12 BTW, you forgot the first letter i on the Certificate word on your resume. 😄
Thanks for the insightful video, Luke!
No problem at all! AND I wouldn't worry to much about forgetting this short term, I think you are going to be fine as long as you are applying it! Keep up the studies!
@@LukeBarousse Hope so. Really appreciate your feedback! )
how are you doing in DA now? did you get a job in it?
@@Kkasa, I gave up shortly after finishing the Google Cert. I have been studying Cybersecurity for the past year, and got a Certification but still have not landed a job. It is way tougher than I thought!
@@Wesjapa100 an i see no it scary i don’t know if it’s worth the time if i put into it
Currently I am enrolled in a Masters programme of Big Data Analytics. Always wondered about the application of my learnings and was in search for a proper roadmap. Your excellent video clarified my doubts. Thank you!
Fantastic! Glad that this was able to help with your journey, Trishit!
Do you still have that food nutrition calculator? Making my own version of that sounds like a great project that I could work on myself and seems like something I would find extremely useful! Thanks for this video btw, this was incredibly helpful! I have had such a hard time figuring out where to make the first step towards learning these skills.
new sub most helpful breakdown seen on UA-cam so far, Thanks bro.
I am very excited rn. I just landed my first job as a data analyst.
What made me realize how scarce skills in this field are, I got offered this job even before I had built any portfolio whatsoever. I just showed off my Coursera certificates, performed some practical tests during the interview, and bam, I was hired!
You can never get hired in this state in any other domain as far as I know.
I am looking forward to a successful career. Man i'm so happy now!
Heck yeah, thanks for sharing this experience; awesome to hear you got the job!
I have to learn on the job and I'm super excited about it
Drop your LinkedIn if you are comfortable, would love to connect.
Your videos are a big inspiration! just started out my own youtube (from my experience as a data analyst) All the best!
Very helpful video coming from someone just starting to learn only within a month ago progress hasn’t been great but this does give a better roadmap of what i should start learning/mastering to better my current life
Glad this was helpful, Mike!
Thanks for the insights Luke. Just one quick question, how was your experience of using Windows on a Macbook Pro? Does it help with using Excel, SQL etc.? Keep up the good work!
Aww thanks so much for this!!
Have you seen this video, where I talk about Windows ona Mac: ua-cam.com/video/U4vh2EClJic/v-deo.html
Overall, I think it's doable to use Windows on a Mac. BUT if you're primarily working in windows, then you should probably consider a Windows PC.
Your video is so good. Such cute 😊cut outs used to showcase all the required things.:)
You have given much clarity on how to progress in data analytics career.
Thanks 👍
My recommendation would be to get the degree (maybe even evaluate switching to something more aligned with your interest as well)
@Edgar Gamarra Junior Data Analyst / BI Analyst. The later start suggesting migrations to Python and so on, tons of companies are stuck in Excel/MySQL
It’s my first time seeing your videos, thank you for your efforts, really
Excellent video!! Looking forward to checking out all your videos. Thank you!

Thank you for noticing this!
Your video helped me a lot to understand on how to be a data analyst. Currently I'm not exactly sure what profession I'm going to chose, but for now I thought of doing something related to commerce and IT
I agree with most of what he is saying, with exception to Calculus. He mentioned the high need of Statistics. Statistics under-pendings begin with Calculus. In addition, there is some analysis that is impossible to do without Calculus knowledge.
Hi Luke, thx for valuable info. You clearly explained a complex path.
This is an amazing blue print to follow. It is the one I had in mind as well, get better at excel, sql, power bi, then python. I come from a business background so my computer knowledge is not the best
