Led Zeppelin Live Aid 1985 3 Stairway to Heaven Stereo (Read Description First)

- Led Zeppelin's infamous return to the stage in Philadelphia's JFK Stadium in July 1985 to support Bob Geldof's international "Live Aid" event to bring relief to the Ethiopian famine. Introduced by Phil Collins, the band takes to the stage with Tony Thompson on drums & Collins tagging along.
Part 3: The Led Zeppelin reunion takes flight on the Stairway, & carries with them 90,000+ along for the ride. Does anybody remember laughter?
This clip has been cleaned up: the green hues from the 20 yr old + tape has been removed, the brightness & contrast have been balanced out.
The audio has been synchronized to the FM broadcast captured on an old cassette tape. That audio was pretty messed up & had lots of dropouts, hopefully the results are satisfactory.
Enjoy!!!
Watch in HQ with headphones (if possible)
Everyone: Stairway to heaven
Jimmy: Escalator To Paradise
Rocket chair ;)
Bloody good comment!
jimmy: no thx imma use the elevator instead
😂😂😂
Lol. .. u so funny
Jimmy so high he don't need a stairway to get to heaven
He will never get to heaven he worships Satan
Your high
God and Satan both took credit. There's God, there's Satan, and then there's. LED ZEPPELIN
Most rock songs would have never been written without the help of diacetylmorphine, better know as Heroin the Hero!
he may be high but he can kick your ass on a guitar anyway He is a God
No one else like them in my life time and I will be 79 in two weeks. LED ZEPPELIN my favorite!!!!!!
These guys literally came from different places on earth to be together to play this one off gig, with only about one hour of practice time before hitting the stage. With that in mind, I think they sounded great. I remember watching this event on live tv with friends as it was happening, and we were all overjoyed and stoked that the remaining members of Zeppelin were actually performing again. Listen to the joy and cheering from the crowd at the end....they all thought it was great. The VJ's from MTV were beside themselves from happiness. This was an historical moment in rock history, and for those who criticize this performance can go screw themselves, because EVERYONE back then enjoyed the experience and thought it was awesome.
Word bro!!
А Deep Purple? , Blackmore? 👍🔥👍
An immortal group and song.
I was at the London live aid it was unbelievable I'll never forget it.. ❤
the world's knew you're legend when a lot of human beings pay to watch a stoned man playing guitar.
You do know Led Zeppelin wasn't the only band playing at this concert ?
@@roberts.6575 yes i do ..
Well, it's not like they knew the performance was gonna suck.
"stoned" is an understatement
Led Zeppelin started the show with equipment and sound problems. They were having trouble getting thru " Rock n Roll " and " Whole Lotta Love " and then they did an amazing version of " Stairway to Heaven " IORR.
I was there at age 17 and make no mistake, this was the highlight of the entire day. Looking back, 35 years later today, I wish I could be a teenager again. Still gives me chills.
Damnn i wish i was there, if only i was born in that time tho😔. At least i can still seeing them in here
It makes me wonder....
I was a 15 year old kid, but I saw Zeppelin’s last U.S. show with Bonzo in Oakland July 1977! p.s. Still have my ticket stub!

No band writes songs Like Zeppelin, they were magic, so blessed to have watched them perform from 70s-80s and beyond, just to see them in Philly again was magical
the problelm is , they never come back. Those who know them suffer from this.
I don't care about worst day or performance. Led Zeppelin is Led Zeppelin. A Legend. And Legends will always live.
Moi je suis un français de 66 ans je les ai vu au festival de knebworth en 1979 sublime j'avais vingt-deux ans
yes because they're inspiring many music group
For all those complaining about this performance remember you are still watching and talking about it 31 years later .... Not many bands can fuck up that magnificently!

+Tim Bennett ... they talked about tiny tim for a long time ... and they still talk about hitler. this is one crap performance no matter how 'famous' they were.
+Tim Bennett true i cannot stop listening/playing this song it's a amazing song
+The Nexus if I remember correctly, it was the band itself that asked the people who made the DVD to cut out the performance
Tim Bennett and
I was there with my wife we were in the back of the stadium of 105,000 people who were going crazy when Zeppelin was on. What a great full day of music
I was 15 yrs old.
it is not exactly led zeppelin though this was just the remaining members putting on a show , jon bonham the king of the drums absolutley made the band his drumming is like nothing else
Wow and what an amazing experience I bet that was!
I wasent born when this came out bye this is great ❤️❤️
Philip Collins tuvo el honor del tocar la bateria con la leyenda vida LED ZEPELLIN
This is not their "worst' day. This is rock and roll, it is raw, unrehearsed and alive. Yes, it's a little bit loose, but that's the essence of it all. Still awesome at the time
Amen
100% agree! That’s my uncle Paul Martinez playing bass.
Jimmy was off his head and as a result his playing was rubbish what a shame.
No. This is absolute crap. No excuses. It's an insult to everyone that has to endure it.
Unrehearsed is what lazy people say when they can't play properly, and Led Zeppelin did not play properly at all.
Absolutely sublime, there are many Rock ballads, but this one still gives me goosebumps, after 52 years of listening to it... incredible!!!!

when a band's "bad performance" gets revisited by thousands of people in a day, the band is truly one of the best band!
It's only considered "bad" because they are so well respected by fans that even a great performance like this is considered underperforming. I'm sure the people there live didn't give a shit. They loved it.
They are too messed up to play the drummer not playing and they are clearly not into it. They are my favorite rock band of all time and that won’t change . I had my own blues band in the 90s and if I was too messed up they wouldn’t let me play and there were many times I was. They are GOAT!
I don't think it was so bad but I know what you mean
@@maxxxmodelz4061 The fact that people didn't care doesn't make it a great performance. There were some major communication issues to say the least...
Композиция отличная. Просто не старались. Концерт!? Может быть нужно было бы и напрягся!

This song is STILL a classic and every classic rock fan's favorite.
Robert's giant smile after saying "Does anybody remember laughter?" makes up for any mistakes made.
Led Zeppelin for ever... In this century And for another...!!!
I think the reason he smiled was because he said that on the 1973 live version of Stairway to Heaven on the Song Remains the Same live album
if robert did not interrupt jimmy he would have been soloing to this day
LMFAO!
lmao
I think he saved him. a bit of that was kinda. hmm. high?
Heheheh
I can't stop laughing imagining that...hehehehe...I see Page at my door playing the guitar....hehehe
That's why Zeppelin is my favourite band, their essence of Rock music is pure. It's about raw energy and feeling good. Even the highly precise & technical Eddie Van Halen said it "Don't stop and don't let the audience know you made a mistake. Or, smile and do it twice, then people will think you meant it! "
I was there about 10 ft off stage left. I don't care what Jimmy or Robert feel about this day, it was awesome to be there.
Even Led Zeppelin on their worst day, right here, are still 5000 times better than most the modern acts on their best day
Eric Blade Thing is they were more often on bad days than good days. They were great composers and creators but Jimmy was horrible live.
timeforachange12 could get sloppy, especially in the later shows but anybody who can watch Dazed and Confused in the Song Remains movie and say he was horrible? And what about the show they did recently for the Celebration Day film. I've been playing for 38 years and he's one of my main influences. I will say the solo in this vid is pretty week. He probably hadn't been practicing much
He was a bad performer, sorry to say, but a great creator in the studio, when he was not copying old afro-american bluesmen.
yea well I disagree that he was always just a bad performer period. and I'm a guy that has stood up there and done it. he had a good stage presence and usually hit the notes. his writing was brilliant. A lot of brits from his era started out with blues. y'know that was how the whole British invasion began?
He did stole a lot from old american bluesman, do some research. I was outraged when I found out myself. Don't get me wrong man, I'm a huge fan as well.
“What drugs would you like before the gig?”
Jimmy: Yes
Who gives a shit.

I think it is the only way to play in front of so many people
It was Phills drumming that messed him up.
@@johnw2259 Yeah, but did Jimmy play as well as he could've played? I thought Jimmy was going to heave a few times. These guys getting ripped during concerts was always something to talk about, but looking back. I think we sometimes got ripped off, by less than optimal performance. Unless of course, we were higher than they were!
not bad for rehearsing for 20 mins in the changing room before hand...
"Hi Robert"
"Hi Jimmy , I haven't seen you in like 5 years. You good?"
"Yep. you ready to do this?"
"Yep. why the fuck not."
"ok. lets go."
"One question though. what fucking key is it in again?"
+Kev G. God they played it for years!! How much rehearsal did they need? To be honest its like a bunch of armatures anyway.
+MrMetalchamp I'm not sure what armatures have to do with this? In comparison to you they are amateurs. Is that what you are saying? I'm sure as soon as you learn to play an instrument you will show everyone how amateurish Led Zeppelin was.
Should be better. But compared to their peers, Cream, they were armatures.
amateurs fucking
Genious knowes no time !
Phil Collins on drums, such a great performance
What an amazing excellent drummer.
100% how in the hell was able to get phil
Go back and listen to John, playing you notice difference
@@angelo7124 If Phil had gotten enough time to rehearse and learn the stuff, he would've probably done an amazing job at it. The dude in his prime was one of the best drummers around, and Bonzo was one of his biggest influences
💙Phil is an amazing drummer and he always shows up 110% ready to give it his best! He has instant recall, he can memorize anything he has heard just once. Robert was/is a good friend of his so of course he especially (and always) comes ready to give every crowd the best show they deserve. Then he gets "scape-goated" for the band's embarrassing debacle! NOT cool at all LZ!😠
So loved Jimmy in the 70s. So sad as a fabulous 🎸 guy. The 🐐 and Rob s voice. So sincere. Jimmy is mega high here 😢😢😢
Everyone talking about how high they are, yet they just remembered every note and word to Stairway to Heaven. I'm sober and can't remember what day it is.

Actually if you watch Plant he has a cheat sheet at his feet for the lyrics. Not sure if he was high or not, but he did need a little help to remember the words. I was lucky enough to be there, very cool event!
At least they didn't forget the words like Fucken Roth!!

Jim Henderson Well atleast Plant wasnt drop dead high like Page
I feel very happy because in 2021 Jimmy turned 77 years old, a handsome and healthy man with gray hair. He survived drugs and alcohol, thank God! And STH remains a masterpiece, the most beautiful and iconic song ever recorded, by the best and most iconic band in the world and Jimmy will always be the greatest and most iconic guitarist of all time! 🎶🎸🎼❤️

What so many forget in retrospect is that they agreed last minute to play a few songs that they hadn't played in years to raise some money for a good cause. It was meant to be watched and heard once -on that day. It was a disappointing performance but it was never meant to be be picked apart for years to come on UA-cam. The crowd loved it and money was raised. By the way, I'm old enough to have watched it. The excitement level was off the charts. If you were in that crowd, you wouldn't have gave a shit about the sloppiness. You would have had a f 'ing blast.
Red you are correct - you want Zep, go watch Song Remains The Same or any clip you can find from the 70's.... but for 20 minutes, in July 1985, for those of us watching, this was everything, sloppy and all.....
I remember staying up into the small hours to see this. Not seen it in 35 years...
Exactly- this was not Led Zeppelin, it was for a good cause- Phil Collins' drumming was too fast, & just plain lackluster- & he had the nerve to say he was embarrassed - I admit the song Rock&Roll ( not included here)was very rough, but Phil must've forgotten about his video for "You Can't Hurry Love" now THAT'S embarrassing- lol
@@jerryhouck2237 F#ck a fil collins, one of the worst ever!!!
I think its the Sound System if you cant hear your self Sing or Play its rather hard to be in Key like being Deaf
It makes me sad seeing them like this, the biggest and most influential band no longer at their prime, but it's still amazing that they came together to do this show! I know that any gigs they have done since this i.e. 2007 at the O2 was back to the quality that we know them for, even if the the drummer is Jason Bonham, Zeppelin need a Bonham, that just seems to be fact! But one thing for sure, IF they ever did one more tour or gig, I'd buy a ticket without a moments thought!
Even drunk, Jimmy Page still performs one of the best solos ever. Even sober musicians today can’t play like him.
I think he was stoned not pissed.

Ian Conery- Watch Rotterdam 1980, that show was brilliant. It shows what an 80s Zeppelin could do when they rehearsed.
It’s the death of bonzo. Jimmy felt responsible for the death because it was at his mansion. Robert and Jonsie both felt partially responsible.

Say what you will about this performance, but bands like Led Zeppelin are few and far between. The look that Robert gives Jimmy at 1:19, to me, is filled with memories of a time past, when they were at the height of their career, standing in those very places steamrolling the rock and roll industry, creating a type of magic that those around to witness were truly lucky to experience. Long live Led Zeppelin!

A classic rendition with all the advantages of a live performance.
Live aid would have to be one of the best concerts in history. Imagine those lucky enough to be there!
No, it’s not “would have” it WAS. Live Aid was the best concert in history. Period. Back then you had to pay to have access to most music video stations as most humans had just the most basic of cable but on that day everything was free. The world opened up and channel corporations allowed the average person like me to watch this extraordinary event. Until the Gulf War a few years later I had never seen paid channels open themselves to everyone. All performers kept to their time frame, no one tried to go over and no egos got in the way - it was the most amazing concert ever! And Phil Collins tool the concord so that he could play at both the British and US concerts - he just wanted to play the drums and help out. There is a book that came out shortly after the concert, but I’m sure it’s long out of print by now, but it or the DVD are well worth the hunt. This was the concert of the century and beyond, it changed music, and it was one of the most amazing experiences watching on my living room floor settled into the shag carpet!
@@laurabaird7267 Yeah that would have been unbelievable. Even watching it on UA-cam and seeing the crowd it looks amazing!
I was there and it was excrutionably hot. It must have been 95 easy all day. The good part was they allowed coolers so we had lots of supplies.
@@laurabaird7267 i agree with your opinion but being there was something else. I still have my ticket and a mint condition sweatshirt. I have been to hundreds of shows since 73 and that one was epic. I was only invited by my friend the day before and had to scramble to catch a flight. And wouldnt you know it an electrical storm prevented me from taking off. Didnt arrive at my friends house until 5 a m . So with 2 hours sleep i managed to stay up in sweltering heat to an epic concert and event.
@@jtb1649 I bet you're glad you made it!
The thing I'm guessing a lot of the people there wouldn't have realised it was going to be the greatest concert ever!
Stairway to Heroin
😜
*cocain
Or the hospital
@@zeitansun4465 same shit
@@darthnihilus4880 Are you serious? They arent even close! Heroin is a major "downer", while cocaine is a stimulant. They literally take your perception of reality in opposite directions from each other.
La verdad que no tiene competencia. Es y seguirá siendo la mejor canción de todos los tiempos
It's fantastic,it's the best music that I listened in my life.
Nobody: You can’t wreck a 20 year legacy in one performance.
Jimmy: Hold my syringe
Greg Hubbard Oh he was on a completely different drug. That makes it so much better.
Greg Hubbard well you can shoot cocaine too dummy. And it looks like he certainly could have relapsed on this day. He could be on anything
Hold my beer
We are all talking about Page right? The figurative guitar god who just happens to roam our Earth in our timelines. I think he can have an off day every decade or so, don’t you think chaps?
@@Bullpug360 Not when 1.5 billions are watching.
I'll never forget the first time I played the first Led Zeppelin album.
To this day ...
I am still...

I love the way Robert looks at Paige at 1:20 he can tell Jimmy is absolutely high as shit

Serious man?!1 Awesome
good eye...
he fucked it up literally
Every great artist has a bad day, it doesn’t diminish their brilliance but only serves to highlight how great they were at their peak.
I think the luckiest people are those who watched Led Zeppelin perform live
1:20 true friendship
I mean besides the fact that they hated each other.
Robert’s thinking “fuck Jimmy you’re stoned”
He's just checking if Jimmy's at Wembley
Brings me back to my twenties. Music, peace, love, and something else. How I miss that time.
Me too and l am 72 and still love this music..always will!
The something else!
Örülök, hogy sikerült megmenteni a lemezt, és így az akkori nagyon szép emlékeket. Köszönet érte! Mária Ferencziné Seres

You know you’re a rock god when Phil Collins is your drummer!
really!thats phil???
@@ruatzelakryptonian4384 Looks like Phil to me. Not sure why he didn't play the whole song. I was a kid when this happened so don't know all the back story but my guess is pretty much every drummer there offered to fill in for JB.
@@saisr1 He flew from US to UK (or maybe the other way around) in the Concorde so that he could participate in both Live Aid concerts.
Oh yes ...he is
I think that the drummer is definitely Phil Collins...
