For all those complaining about this performance remember you are still watching and talking about it 31 years later .... Not many bands can fuck up that magnificently!
+Tim Bennett ... they talked about tiny tim for a long time ... and they still talk about hitler. this is one crap performance no matter how 'famous' they were.
timeforachange12 could get sloppy, especially in the later shows but anybody who can watch Dazed and Confused in the Song Remains movie and say he was horrible? And what about the show they did recently for the Celebration Day film. I've been playing for 38 years and he's one of my main influences. I will say the solo in this vid is pretty week. He probably hadn't been practicing much
yea well I disagree that he was always just a bad performer period. and I'm a guy that has stood up there and done it. he had a good stage presence and usually hit the notes. his writing was brilliant. A lot of brits from his era started out with blues. y'know that was how the whole British invasion began?
He did stole a lot from old american bluesman, do some research. I was outraged when I found out myself. Don't get me wrong man, I'm a huge fan as well.
That's why Zeppelin is my favourite band, their essence of Rock music is pure. It's about raw energy and feeling good. Even the highly precise & technical Eddie Van Halen said it "Don't stop and don't let the audience know you made a mistake. Or, smile and do it twice, then people will think you meant it! "
It’s funny, watching this now and knowing where I was sitting that day, I had no idea at the time (of course) how much my life would change after that summer. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moments where your life took an unexpected turn, for better or worse, but for me it was this concert. I miss being young and full of hope.
A lot of musicians follow others and openly admit it, music is like math, the possibilitys are endless.Go listen to B -52s or Devo , someone like you would like that

This is not their "worst' day. This is rock and roll, it is raw, unrehearsed and alive. Yes, it's a little bit loose, but that's the essence of it all. Still awesome at the time

This song is such an amazing composition with such awesome lyrics that our pastor plays it in church every so often. Loved it back in the day, and will always love this song. Pure Rock and Roll as it's meant to be!
It's one of those songs where the greatness of the original outshines any subsequent covers or live renditions. It sets just the right elements of composition altogether from the beginning; such that other versions may be nice, but you always come back to the original for the purest appreciation of the masterpiece that it truly is.
Your pastor EH? Jimmy Page was/is an occultism. Dont believe me, look it up. He did ceremonial rituals and some dark magic. Your pastor needs to learn a few things. May Queen is a witch. The Piper calling referred to here is Satan. I am LMAO. This song is a call to change the path you're on towards the other side. Just type Jimmy Page...occult...Aleister Crowley...people who sold their souls and you will wake up. Still a good song but WHO wrote it....
I was there! Anyone else seeing them that was in attendance that day knows all these guys were performing in record heat in Philly ... it was a once in a life time experience to be in attendance, they could have sung and played backwards and it would have been more then alright just to see them perform again! They got the loudest roar from the audience of anyone who walked on to that stage!!!
That's a good comment to make. I know I am not at all my best self in the worst heat. I thought they seemed maybe a bit out of sorts, but I really liked the performances. I wish I could have been there, but I was only 9 at the time.
Oh, and that's so awesome you were there. Good for you pausing whatever you had going on for such an epic milestone in music history. It says something when some of the richest and most famous people out there all ate humble enough to perform for nothing and help others. I am impressed.
It makes me sad seeing them like this, the biggest and most influential band no longer at their prime, but it's still amazing that they came together to do this show! I know that any gigs they have done since this i.e. 2007 at the O2 was back to the quality that we know them for, even if the the drummer is Jason Bonham, Zeppelin need a Bonham, that just seems to be fact! But one thing for sure, IF they ever did one more tour or gig, I'd buy a ticket without a moments thought!
Casual fans watch the solo by Page here, and they think he's lost! "What's he playing?" Zep fans know this is the framework for the Stairway solo he always used. It's nothing like the studio. He's not lost, it's actually very familiar.
this solo was just to fill the time, not one of his best but still better than the Rolling Stone guitarist, hard to measure up to Eric Clapton for the Brits, not even Jeff Beck, one of the drummers looks like Phil Collins, not uncommon to have two sets of them, usually they take something to calm their nerves, at least they finished.
Each of these men paid their dues. They solidified rock music and took songs to such high levels it became difficult for most any band to reach the heights the Zepp members took it to. While most bands play hard to reach top notch standards but fail, Led Zepplin kept going with better and better. Once bands reach that high plateau, they are unable to do so after. Zepp kept it going. They will always remain the soul of Rock and Roll from each and every song they presented. We get older, things don't quite work as they used to. They came together, on stage after many years and played. Getting to stand and watch them perform would have been an honor. Stairway will always rate number one.
played better than 99% of classic musicians too. not sure why you're taking a dig at the modern era, there's extremely impressive guitarists under 30 right now
Everyone talking about how high they are, yet they just remembered every note and word to Stairway to Heaven. I'm sober and can't remember what day it is.
Actually if you watch Plant he has a cheat sheet at his feet for the lyrics. Not sure if he was high or not, but he did need a little help to remember the words. I was lucky enough to be there, very cool event!
@@calummckenna9642 again, I've seen bands high off their tits who played better, like when you're one of the biggest bands of all time, playing at one of the biggest charity shows of all time, maybe you should have at least one rehearsal, and maybe warm up your voice before? Sounds like Phil Collins had had more practice than Page or Plant here, which is ironic considering he wasn't part of Led Zeppelin
brings back memories of being there. the buzz of led zepplin actually playing was beyond words. back then the idea of getting these 2 on a stage was near impossible let alone doing stairway to heaven.
This is great, but really shows me what a great force and part of Led Zeppelin John Bonham was and is. No wonder they group dis-banded. Bonham can't be replaced! His drumming made this song as much as the guitars and vocals did.

Was watching all day with pals - drinking beer. - then this - don't care about the ins an outs of the performance - we sat mesmerised - something we never expected to ever see or hears live again...we rocked and rocked and rocked!
No, it’s not “would have” it WAS. Live Aid was the best concert in history. Period. Back then you had to pay to have access to most music video stations as most humans had just the most basic of cable but on that day everything was free. The world opened up and channel corporations allowed the average person like me to watch this extraordinary event. Until the Gulf War a few years later I had never seen paid channels open themselves to everyone. All performers kept to their time frame, no one tried to go over and no egos got in the way - it was the most amazing concert ever! And Phil Collins tool the concord so that he could play at both the British and US concerts - he just wanted to play the drums and help out. There is a book that came out shortly after the concert, but I’m sure it’s long out of print by now, but it or the DVD are well worth the hunt. This was the concert of the century and beyond, it changed music, and it was one of the most amazing experiences watching on my living room floor settled into the shag carpet!

So you could watch it on here that’s why you were born in 1992, lucky for me I was born in 1960, watched these and many other greats since then. You haven’t missed much as it’s all been recorded.
I truly believe, that Jimmy is so smacked out of his mind here, that about half-way through the solo - he forgets where he is and thinks he's playing a Led Zeppelin concert in 1972, where he could do a 20 minute+ solo. At 8:25 you can hear Robert Plant completely cut him off to move along to the next part of the song, and Jimmy snaps out of it (sort of) lol.
I believe the part about Jimmy being smacked out of his mind, but not sure why Robert cut off the solo, if you've seen Jimmy play this live, that's always how he ends it, he was just about to hit that iconic riff that concludes the solo. From watching the interview after the performance, it sounds like the monitors weren't great and they were haivng a hard time hearing, so maybe Robert thought he was at the end. It was literally the next riff that ends the solo.
@@cameronlowrey9371 For real? Dam he should have known better then lol.. 4 real tho live aid was literally thrown together at virtually the last minute and all bands either had their gear quickly flown in and tossed together on stage or just used what happened to have been already out there. None of the acts were paid per-se as it was charity. . im %100 sure that everything wasn't up to most of the acts personal preferences as far as sound and monitors go and all that... I have no real complaints about any of it. Led zepp, black sabbath, queen etc... It was epic and a solid part of music history.
Jimmy is high as a kite and with his worst performance still plays better than i most people ever could. Thank god he got sober and is in good shape in his later years in life.
I don't condone substance abuse and I'm glad these legends have cleaned up since their hay days. At the same time, loads of brilliance came from legendary artists so, there's something to be said about creating during an altered state of consciousness.
@@Yourfavoritesalad "he actually admits" you meant to say "he actually blames the drummer" perhaps instead? Jimmy was really fμcked up in this video and his performance is sloppier than his usual "sloppy" style that he has.
Jonesey is on keys. Legend goes that Plant basically wanted Page with his band, so they just didn't call him until quite late - JPJ actually effectively had to invite himself.
At the end of Page's solo, it seems he's waiting for the drums to lead him into the solos finale, which they fail to do. So Page seems to have a point about the drummers not knowing the material.
Page said not long after Bonham died when asked why Zeppelin wont go on he said " I could never imagine playing and not looking back for Bonham. Led Zeppelin is finished"
The reason why these events generally suck is because much of the time, there are no rehearsals. That's not the drummer's fault and Page looks like he was to drunk to rehearse anyway.
@@yeyinitta0939 Yeah I saw that! That moment where it looks like he simultaneously wet himself. Good ol' Jimmy, pointlessly multitasking even under the sternest of examinations.

Eric Blade Thing is they were more often on bad days than good days. They were great composers and creators but Jimmy was horrible live.
timeforachange12 could get sloppy, especially in the later shows but anybody who can watch Dazed and Confused in the Song Remains movie and say he was horrible? And what about the show they did recently for the Celebration Day film. I've been playing for 38 years and he's one of my main influences. I will say the solo in this vid is pretty week. He probably hadn't been practicing much
He was a bad performer, sorry to say, but a great creator in the studio, when he was not copying old afro-american bluesmen.
yea well I disagree that he was always just a bad performer period. and I'm a guy that has stood up there and done it. he had a good stage presence and usually hit the notes. his writing was brilliant.

This song is such an amazing composition with such awesome lyrics that our pastor plays it in church every so often. Loved it back in the day, and will always love this song. Pure Rock and Roll as it's meant to be!
I don't think they wrote it. They have other song that comes close to it.
It's one of those songs where the greatness of the original outshines any subsequent covers or live renditions. It sets just the right elements of composition altogether from the beginning; such that other versions may be nice, but you always come back to the original for the purest appreciation of the masterpiece that it truly is.

OMG People!! It's not about how he LOOKS or getting HIGH Its about his MUSIC!!! Thanks JP

Live aid would have to be one of the best concerts in history. Imagine those lucky enough to be there!

That drummer was beating those drums like they owed him money tho.. Hard to hear monitors over a loud drum kit.. Just sayin.

Jonesey is on keys. Legend goes that Plant basically wanted Page with his band, so they just didn't call him until quite late - JPJ actually effectively had to invite himself.
Po raz pierwszy usłyszałem ich na początku lat 70 dla mnie są i byli i będą klasykami i geniuszami rocka
At the end of Page's solo, it seems he's waiting for the drums to lead him into the solos finale, which they fail to do. So Page seems to have a point about the drummers not knowing the material.
Jimmy is always right.
Cant blame the drummers, doubt they even rehearsed for this so they weren’t aware of the style of playing.
Phil 👎
Man Jimmy crack me up when he’s high, he’s not even trying to not look high😂
Why should he?
no hiding that shit LMAO
8:28 "ok, that´s enough Jimmy"
If you check around 8:27 page did an eye contact and nod for plant to sing now.
Solo was actually amazing.
yeyinitta 09 Yea, u said that like three times already. It doesn’t even look like that any way.
@@GamerTech28 oh yeah, how does it look then?
@@yeyinitta0939 Yeah I saw that! That moment where it looks like he simultaneously wet himself. Good ol' Jimmy, pointlessly multitasking even under the sternest of examinations.
Well done. I’ve been seeking solace today to quell my combat PTSD. This really helped. Thank you for your work on making this video. 🤘🇺🇸
Question: How does Jimmy play while so blitzed? Answer: Practice
He's a was a professional drug taker and a professional guitarist so they just gel together
@@matthewjdouglas6471 A perfect combination
Its called muscle memory, because of frequent repetition it happens without conscious thought...🤷♀️🙏🏻
You call that playing? I've heard bar-bands play these songs better than these assholes; give me a fucking break. Yeah Jimmy Page has had plenty of practice being a fraud, and stealing other people's music. LOL !!!
