I've actually managed to find a couple of these in circulation recently. I've tried roll hunting with dimes/quarters but I've never gotten a single one of those.
I just posted a couple of recent silver coin pickups on my channel if you're interested in watching.

you never know, ive heard stranger things -sometimes people will turn in hoards of coins to the bank having no idea what their actual value is, a friend of mine owns a "Coinstar" franchise and he's constantly amazed at some of the valuable coins people put in these machines.

Price of nickels fall first and rise last, limiting opportunity for gains.
Junk silver is next on the list @ 90%. There is a market time lag as well.
.999 & .9999 are front line. Ready for manufacturing consumption immediately. No melting cost.
Buy, sell, trade, instantly @ market value +-.
Now is an opportune time to sell nickels. However, replacing with purer silver would
show again, the minimal flexibility of 35-40%ers.

Just the wear on the front gives the coin away as a war nickel. The silver alloy is pretty soft. It would be very unusual to see a standard copper/nickel coin with that much wear since the alloy is quite a bit harder.

      @Silveready1  7 років тому +1

Yes, they definitely have a "different" look to them especially when they have a little wear.

Finding "free" war nickels is great.
Do NOT buy for silver content.
Cheaper bought is cheaper sold Forrest.
Buy 90% and higher % only.
Inherited some, and traded for 90%. What a horrific below spot price. Made back loss since however. Grandad would be happy.
Very limited number of buyers, and costly to melt.
Very fun finding for free, especially with metal detector. Damn ground frozen!

"Cheaper bought is cheaper sold." Doesn't that mean it evens out whether you're buying 35%, 40% or 90% silver? (You buy at a low price and sell at a low price, or buy at a high price and sell at a high price). Or is it mainly the cost of melting lower purity coins that makes them less appealing?

the 1942 P (no Mintmark) this is called the "Type 1" version - it is not silver but is actually worth more than the silver version.
depending upon condition, the price can range from about four Dollars in average circulated condition to upwards of 1,000 dollars or more for the highest quality uncirculated specimens - your circulated version is probably closer to the 4 dollar range - but still a nice find!

average date, heavily circulated "V" or "liberty Head" nickels are worth about two dollars each, higher grade versions and key dates are worth substantially more.
