I have seen and held a 1943 copper Penney. But it wasn’t mine to keep. It belonged to a friend in High School and his family. It was brought in to have our chemistry teacher verify that it was really made from copper. At that time it was believed that only 6 such coins existed. The sale of it put all of the kids in that family through College. The story was that the youngest son got it as part of a payment for the news papers he delivered. Someone thought its value was only one cent!

About 15 years ago I managed an apartment building. There was an old 1960's Coke machine in the laundry room dispensing for 50 cents a can. I kept it stocked and noticed the silver quarters coming in a few at a time. So I taped a $1 bill on every 9th can with a note saying ''You Won!''. Holy smokes, the machine was empty every 3 days. The real silver quarters were pouring in. I never found out who was raiding somebody's stash of real silver quarters but it was enough to fill up a one liter container in a few months.

Coin dealer/shop owner and wheat cent collector here...Been doing it for 60+ years. There were VERY very few 1943 copper planchets which got to the penny dies in 1943. Most if not all have been accounted for. Over the decades I have only seen and handled one such cent, and that was in 1958. It sold at auction in 1964 for $122,000 USD due to it's AU (almost uncirculated) condition. Back then, almost all of these rare genuine cents had already been accounted for, but the best guess was that there were (in 1964) if any, one or two circulating on the planet. An old Navy buddy came into my shop in the '70's and CLAIMED to have 3 of them. Well, I called B.S. on him, BUT...they passed my magnet test and I started thinking something is really fishy here, 3 of the rarest cents on Earth and my old buddy has 3 of them, a P, a D, and an S. He wanted to sell them to me, as all the matchbook covers back then had the 'Million-Dollar-Penny' advertisement "Do you have one of THESE 1943 pennies?" With his permission, under 40X magnification we scraped the obverse and reverse sides which revealed they had been copper-plated, and were in fact, ordinary steel cents with a thin zinc coating value, 3c to 5c each. The real and honest chances of finding a genuine 1943 (P, D, or S mint) as of 2019 is approximately ONE in 6 quadrillion. Any real numismatist would bet any lifetime collection of gold that you are NOT going to find one of these cents anywhere today. Also, from the late 1940's, a lot of State Fair Operators and novelty shops were selling and handing these out as souvenirs to tourists as a joke gift item. It is sad that some ignorant/innocently naive people believed this nonsense, thinking they had suddenly become wealthy. There was a New York News story of a widow's suicide after learning that her "valuable" 1943-D COPPER WHEAT CENT she had held onto for decades was a plated fake. Sad but true. So, Don't waste your time. Collect some coins, have some fun, and don't fall for a counterfeit cent. GL and HH to all - John J. Smythe, Numismatist

I am not sure where I got my love of coins but I love collecting them. My husband and I throw all our change in a basket. When the basket is full I go through it and get all the coins out I want to keep, the rest I roll and save for something we want. I have purchased an e-reader, a puppy, we’ve used it towards trips etc. I’ve done this most of my life with no prompting from anyone. I simply love collecting coins. My sister works for Dollar General and keeps her eyes peeled for coins, 2 dollar bills etc.

As a longtime professional coin collector let me make a few corrections. (1) No coin should EVER be cleaned with more than soapy water. (2) The two factors that determine cost are rarity and condition. Most collectors think this sale is looney (one had sold the year before for $85,000 - 1/20th the cost). But this one was unique - it had been certified by professionals (PCGS), it was graded MS63 and classified as "Bright Red", an incredible rarity.
Nothing in your pocket will be a high grade due to the scuff marks, wear and tear and lack of luster. Example: The famous 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent can go for $5,000 (brown), $7200 (Brown with some red) or $13,500 (bright red).

arthur, if ur interested in old coins and not wanting to spend a fortune to own them. my suggestion is to check ur pocket change daily, ive found silver coins, old wheat pennies with value, even .50 cents or $3 or $4 bucks for a penny adds up over a lifetime., And u can actually buy old coinage from Roman times and older for $100 bucks or less. Do some research and don't buy until you've found what u like and the same coin is sold from different retailers for a similiar price., Good Hunting & Happy Collecting

My Dad had a vending machine route of pinballs, jukeboxes, pool tables, and slot type machines. I went with him from 1950 to 2000 and would through hundreds of dollars of change weekly. The rarest coin I found had a mint run of 900,000 a mercury dime. We did find 10 half dimes in a jukebox. I noticed we would find more rare coins when the economy dropped. People were spending them to eat and we had a small Mom & Pop store he owned got over 50 silver dollars one year and none were real rare. When they took the silver coins out of circulation in 1965 in a few years it was no longer worth it to go through all the change.

Yeah, those pennies are worth like 4 cents each now! You'da been rich! Seriously, common date wheat pennies (not "weat pennys") are barely worth a premium over their copper value these days. A pre-1982 penny is worth about three cents in copper, meanwhile you can buy a bag of 5,000 what pennies right now on ebay for $203.49 (with free shipping!) That's just over four cents per penny.
