    Cool video but I been reading through the comments and you tell someone you leave the grains to dry for 20 min before u put them in the bag and another person you told them you don’t let em dry you put them straight in the bag. Good video but missing the little details that people want to know. And your experiment would be more accurate if you weight it out the spawn before you put them in instead of eyen it

    Might have been good to inoculate the three bags with an equal volume of liquid culture. This could remove any slight edge introduced by accidentally giving one of the bags slightly more or slightly less of the pre-colonized grain. Regardless, really fun experiment! :) Testing different ratios and combinations of these and other components would be fun too!

    Nice upgrade. The "sealer" is actually a spacer for the bottom to keep your jars/bags off direct heat. ;) Been canning vegies with one of these for years... love them.

    Many years ago (1976) I created a plastic-enclosed environment to transfer spore and had a can of disinfectant and a burning candle inside to sterilize my transfer tool. When I sprayed the disinfectant to sterilize the air the enclosure exploded in my face, scorching my eyebrows and completely melting the enclosure. Fun times.

    One thing to mention is the cost. 50lb bags of milo and millet average around d $50. Whereas the whole oats are $15. It’s also easier to find oats pretty much year round. But I do agree that the smaller size of the milo(sorghum) and millet do allow for more inoculation points and more than likely faster colonization.

    • @BoomerShroomer
      @BoomerShroomer  3 роки тому +6

      The local feed store where I live sells 50 pound bags of milo for about 25 bucks and the whole oat is about 12 bucks per 50 pounds. Maybe you can find it cheaper at a farm store or feed store in your area. I usually do a mix of milo and whole oat. I am making a new spawn bag video to show my go to recipe after using it for 6 months now.

    Isn't it harder to seal the spawn bag with the sealer when the top is wet after sterilization? Have you faced this issue? And in case the spawn bag were to be inoculated with a spores syringe, wouldn't it be better to pre-seal the bag before sterilizing it? I have head that can cause the bag to bust inside the pressure cooker though, but others do recommend doing so. Any advice?

      Nice thing about a bag - being able to redistribute the myc in the grain easily a few days after innoc. Also, easy to fruit directly from the bag.
      Nice thing about a jar - no plastic waste.

      @@rogerrabt Thanks for that tip. My first bag I did mix up at about 20% and it took off once I did that.
      I just inoculated another bag and mixed it up at about 10% because the mycelium was in the center of grains and by mixing it the outside part started colonizing.

    I’m curious why you pressure cook your boiled grains in vacuum seal bags for 2 hours. It just seems rather redundant. Mushrooms grow on dead trees, shit, and broken dreams. Couldn’t you just boil/blanch your mediums, put in a poly bag and put them in a water canner. As long as the internal temperature in the bag exceeds 160F, it should be sterile. Like a sous vide.

    • @Thesacrednetwork
      @Thesacrednetwork 2 роки тому

      Yes you can, but you don't kill off some of the bacteria hiding in the grain. Soak it 24hrs so it germinates, then sterilizing with PC killing the bacteria. It is the best way to kill them off. There are some grain Tek that does do boiling for 30min then to bag or jar but it doesn't germinate the bacteria and kill it with sterilization the way this does. There's no real wrong way of doing it as long as you sterilize but one is better to kill off spores and bacteria than the other.

    I noticed you don't dry the grains after draining the water out. Is drying not necessary? I followed your method but after sterilizing in the PC, the bags seemed to be very moist inside and some of the oat grains appear to burst open. Is the moisture in the bag going to be an issue when inoculating and may cause contamination?

    • @BoomerShroomer
      @BoomerShroomer  3 роки тому

      It’s okay to have some moisture in the bag. The condensation goes away after about two days. So far I haven’t had any issues. Only problem I had is I left the bags in sun all day and it started to to grow additional bacteria because of the heat of the sun and also killed some of the mycelium. But I’ve never let the grains sit after draining them. But if you think they might be too wet I don’t think it can hurt. But you definitely want the grain to be moist or the spores or LC won’t take.

    No mention of the bags you use with your video other than they're 3 gallon. I'm looking at polypropylene and polyethylene bags. Which type are best and why? Thank you! Great video.

      looking at wikipedia, polypropylene seems to tolerate heat much better.

    All genetics. I don’t know if I can mention strains? But one spore in oats was one of my fastest growing and strongest fruits ever. That also goes for all in one bags. Healthy genetics will make it.

    Hey Ashley, now that you are doing liquid culture, have you considered repeating this experiment? I think the amount of spawn/LD added to each bag should be more precisely dosed to get the most empirical results. Also, the size of the grain create a significant difference between the empty space in the give volume. Seems like milo creates a sweet spot regarding the space the mycelium has to grow verses air exchange. There might be other factors involved, but my hunch is that each species of fungus might slightly prefer different grain sizes (and obviously each grain type or mix of grain/sawdust/wood species also play a factor in rate and vigor of growth). I wonder if rate of growth impacts quality/quantity of fruits. Have you read anything about this?

      I am working on a new spawn bag video. Been capturing footage for months now. Should have something out in a few weeks.

    All that growth after 2 days?! I followed ur video and noticed growth in about 20 days using whole oat. Im not sure why it didnt happen sooner than that

    I've always wondered whether it's a terrible idea to reuse bags when they have enough room left up top to reseal. I haven't tried it because I don't want to lose one. It just seems like a waste of plastic though. Anyone tried it?

    Have you had any problems from not drying out the grain before adding it to the bag?

    looking to get this pressure cooker. Im curious about the canning rack? does the one that comes with it work? It looks like it would melt the plastic.

      I get 40lb bags for $18. But it probably varies by area.

    I need so much help warming my spawn bags! In summer, it's pretty easy, but how can I do it in cooler months? I have a couple grow mats, ice been keeping the bags in a shoebox raised up about an inch off the heating pad. Feedback?
