Thank you for this video!!!! You explain everything very well. How far up should we paint the tub, also how long does a normal grow take from start to finish? And go cards!!!!!
Daddy Dank Thank you! Paint the tub up to the top layer of bulk substrate. So about 2 to 3 inches. It doesn’t have to be exact. The whole process is about 2 months. 1 month to fully colonize the spawn bag, 2 weeks to fully colonize the bulk substrate.. then two weeks of fruiting. 🍄
I recently just came across your channel...and let me tell you you are absolutely so clear and detailed when it comes to growing shrooms!!! I appreciate you and your channel. I’ve come across many channels and not as clear as yours. You keep it short and simple. That’s what we need. We need simple. Many teks out there are just too much. Totally agree. I've watched so many videos preparing myself to grow mushrooms but they weren't giving all the information as you have. I wish i found you sooner, I could have saved so much time.
If you really don't like side pins, painting the bottom of the tub will not prevent them. Side pins occur in painted-bottom tubs without _liners_ because the space between the colonized cake and the sides of the tub -- which develops as the cake shrinks a bit -- is a very good microenvironment for fruiting. It's not really not so much about light. But a reasonably thin liner (like some cheap black garbage bags -- not thick contractor bags), will adhere to the side of the cake as the cake shrinks -- and therefore prevent that pinning microclimate from forming. That polyfill stuff is so untidy. You can use micropore-type tape -- or better yet, you can buy pre-cut, circular adhesive micropore filters to neatly place over your holes. Additionally, the very popular dung-loving species you're probably considering growing doesn't really need to be cased. Although opinions differ on that a bit. Also, the holes in that tub could stand to be placed a little differently. Assume about 3" of substrate, side holes will be about 4 or 4.5" up. The holes on either end should be up higher than is depicted here.
Thanks for the video Ashley :) In addition to the helpful info and demonstration, you also have a great positive energy and you're enjoyable to watch and listen to :) Much love to you! 💚🍄🍄

I'm honestly more excited now for the actual process vs the end results. I've always geeked out about stuff like this, I love it!
Great video but I would like to definitely let you know that the reason that side pins happen or because when the substrate colonizes it itself shrinks therefore creating microclimates that happen between the shrunken cake of mycelium and the walls of the tub so even though this happens will be small any light that hits the side of the tub and goes down will still fruit the bodies. A plastic liner will adhere to the side of the mycelium itself creating essentially a seal preventing a microclimate.
Thanks for this explanation. I've been doing research for a monotub grow and I understood that you need to prevent side pining, and I didn't know if I should use a liner or paint. To me, spray painting just seemed easier than making a liner, but you explained why a liner would be better. You saved me finding that out for myself.

I put the lid on it 2-3 weeks ago when I made the substrate, but because I was going out of town for holiday I decided to wait before starting this process. The bucket has remained sealed the entire time. Thank you for your time, I love your videos!

Im guessing youre painting the sides to stop side pins? Doesnt a bin liner cut to shape inside give better results as it shrinks with the sub so stops micro climates?
I have a question. Is there a point in time where you can’t add a casing layer? Is the window for casing only after the tub has colonized? Or can you case down the line like after a 1st flush per say?
Yes, there is time when you can add a casing when it is most beneficial. But could also add it at anytime and the mushrooms would possibly start to colonize it. I have been adding a casing when I first put them in.. So I mix the spawn an bulk together flatten it down and then add a half in later of bulk as the casing and go from there. I do not add a layer later on.
Hey thank you much! One question I haven’t seen anyone else using that last “casting”? layer I think you called it...the layer of coco coir over the fully colonized bulk+already cased substrate. What’s the purpose aside from adding more humidity? Doesn’t it also then have to be colonized or the fruits push through? I feel like the fruits will only push through on the edges closest to air exchange OR does this help create the best microclimate across the entire surface?! I have 4 more days on two tubs before inducing fruiting so I’m really curious!
The casing layer basically provides protection for the mycelium and added humidity. My last two tubs I did not add a casing layer and they are doing very well! If you are growing cubes I would recommend NOT using a casing layer. I am not sure what you are growing... But some mushrooms need a casing to grow.
do you have central air so you can keep the temp within the good range...That's my only foreseeable problem...during the summer it can get up into the 110+s outside and 80+ inside with the window units on
@@BoomerShroomer Thanks...that relieves my biggest concern about pursuing growing Mushrooms at my home... P.S. What do you that your thermostat set at and why?
@@BoomerShroomer by the way have you ever watered between the sides when the cake is moving in from the edges so it doesn’t dry up so much? I’m wondering if that might help me since mine seems to dry up easily (very dry here).
I use a 56qt. or so tub. 2lbs of spawn and 8lb of pasteurized Manure based substrate from Out-Grow. You need between 3-4 inches of spawn/ substrate after laying together. I find that closer to 4in is the best results. I’ve tried many different ratios and the best ones are the ones with 20% spawn grain and 80% pasteurized manure based substrate.
Why do you add just a little more substrate on top? Everything is theoretically sterile except for the mycelium. Since that’s already colonized wouldn’t it best protect against whatever might float through those holes? Would it dry the mycelium out before it colonized to its fruiting if it wasn’t covered with something?
No, you don’t need to cover them with a casting layer. But you can. When you start to fruit just spray them down and expose tot he air and they will start to pin. I’m growing oysters right now and they need a casing layer but next go around with cubs I’m going to try no casing layer and see how it goes.
Have you used uncle ben rice packs to spawn mycelium? I dont have a pressure cooker yet so I used a few of those to help stay sterile. It's been about 7 days since inoculation with spore syringe and its getting pretty fluffy. I need to know when to spawn to bulk and I hear people say it should be almost rock hard, but it's not even close to rock hard where it's almost solid mycelium. Any thoughts? Thanks for your videos!
I have not used those before but yes it should be a pretty solid block where you need to work pretty hard to break it a part for the montoub process. If you send me a few pics on instagram I can take a look and let you know more information. Also it takes about 30 days to fully colonize a spawn bag depending on how big they are. Hardest part is being patience. :-)
@@BoomerShroomer sorry I dont use Instagram. But it does help to know how hard it should be. I did a break and ahake today and I'll leave it for another week. It's not alot of rice in each of those bags so I'm sure I won't have to wait longer than 3 weeks. Thanks

Also, check on my instagram you can see my tubs that don't have a casing.
do you have central air so you can keep the temp within the good range...That's my only foreseeable problem...during the summer it can get up into the 110+s outside and 80+ inside with the window units on
That's fine. Mushrooms can grow in hotter temps. You can put a fan in the room to try to cool it down. But I do have central air.
@@BoomerShroomer Thanks...that relieves my biggest concern about pursuing growing Mushrooms at my home...
P.S. What do you that your thermostat set at and why?
@@matthewjacobs141 around 70 all year long.
@@BoomerShroomer And why 70?
You are awesome thank you
Ever try without holes? I’m just beginning and trying to fan and spray daily with no holes
Sure, you can do an unmodified tub but you'll have to fan it a lot when they start to fruit.
@@BoomerShroomer by the way have you ever watered between the sides when the cake is moving in from the edges so it doesn’t dry up so much? I’m wondering if that might help me since mine seems to dry up easily (very dry here).
If your tub is dry you can mist the sides of the tub but don’t mist the mycelium directly.
@@BoomerShroomer I was thinking squirting water down the sides where the crack between the cake and the tub is to let some soak into the bottom.
I didn’t tape I went straight to polyfil, everything is great so far tried to put it in fruiting condition just 36 hours ago is it to late to case?
I wouldn’t case at this point. just let them fruit.
Would you recommend the casing layer + sunlight for APE strain?
What is the bulk recipe please?
is there a how to making casing layer
i lovee this
why did they only grow on the sides? did you not moisten the middle enough when casing?
They eventually grew in the middle. But yes I think the casing was a little too think in the middle too.
@@youshowmeyours yeah true. I sprayed the middle too. But they definitely side pin without a liner.
@@youshowmeyours I would use a black liner too.
Can i get away with 1 1/2 inch holes?
Or one inch works
Love you! Thanks
Thank you!
New sub good work
Thank you!
Hi thank you so much for your video, got a question though, may I ask what is the ratio(weight) of your spawn bag versus the substrate? Thank you!
I usually use a 3 pound spawn bag and one recipe of bulk substrate in a 66 Qt monotub.
Thanks
@@shawnwillis7561 You could also email me. EndersAsh@gmail.com
@@BoomerShroomer I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks!
You should look up 90 second mycology. He pretty much exclusively use uncle ben rice bags.
How long does it take for pnis to start?
Hi there, LOVE your videos!
Can I use the poly fill right from the get go instead of plugs? I made the northern spore mono tub and am ready to put my substrate and grain directly into it to colonize further. Thanks!
You can. Only problem it is won’t be as humid which may cause them to colonize a little slower. Also use a liner!
Maybe I’ll wrap Saran Wrap around the tub lol
Thanks again you’re a legend!
One more question! I have 6 lbs of spawn is that enough for two tubs? Thinking I might just do one for my first!
@@namesjames519 I think it might be enough for two. But you will get an even better flush if you put it all in one tub.
Hey great video! I was wondering if vermiculite would work on its own as a casing layer?
Yes, it could but coco coir is better.
