    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I want to add a manufacturer's recommendation from Unicorn Grow Bags. Unicorn states that you should not "Gusset Fold" your bags and instead "Flat Fold" them. The way you folded the top of the bag before sterilization by folding in the gussets in before folding the bag down is considered the gusset fold. Instead you should flatten the opening of the bag with no folds and then fold it down and under the bag.

      I can't believe I missed his videos on flat folding. I'm very happy you pointed that out. I will definitely be flat folding going forward with my bags.

      Curious, why would it make a difference between folds? Would it make sealing easier or is this for added grow room?

    • @kdock13
      @kdock13 2 роки тому +27

      @@TearringNable The gusset fold means that your impulse sealer needs seal through 4 layers of plastic, making 2 seals, instead of 1 layer. This increases the risk of blowouts/leaks. You should also adjust your sealer so that you get a good tight seal in one pulse without burning the bag. Doing a second seal in a different spot is definitely a good idea.

      I think these days gypsum is considered pointless and bro science. Some folks have been using it for decades, so you definitely can use it, but plenty of people will tell you that it does nothing to justify adding another step or ingredient. Same with soaking and or simmering grains to hydrate before sterilizing. That used to be considered an essential step, but I'm just getting back into the hobby after an extended absence and it seems that a lot of knowledgeable folks have great success now without bothering with any of this.

    So I'm inclined, due to ease of access & your video supporting that brown rice is the best grain for spawning, to use brown rice. In this vid there's an opportunity to elaborate on what the language "Now here I have some oats [or interchangeable grain?] & bird seeds that I've soaked overnight with some hot water." This suggests the water was kept hot for a 7-8 hour period; how was this accomplished, assuming that language is accurate? There's a fan in the frame, was that used, post soak, to decrease overall moisture levels? If so, for how long? Inquiring minds need to now the minutia without a need to guess. :) Thank you!

    • @HelpMe_OrNot
      @HelpMe_OrNot Рік тому +1

      Use 70% iso as 90% will evaporate before killing much bacteria. For grain jars, it is best to inoculate as soon as they have cooled down (1-3 days storage max). I assume the bags would be similar. A veteran would know much more than me, but I stick with making the jars/bags I'm going to use that day to help prevent contam. I hope this helps! It seems counterintuitive, but 70% is proven to sanitize better than 91% because the water content allows it to sit longer on the cells of the nasties you are trying to kill. I've never seen any data pertaining to how great the difference is though. And the sooner you noc the better, but if you've cooked your bags long enough with a proper hydration level, a few days shouldn't make much difference.

      Some people say go ahead and seal them, some say they will burst, with .2 micron filter patches being more likely to cause bursting in the PC than .5 micron. Others seal and wrap them up in various things to discourage expansion. Another option is to fold the tops over twice and secure with 2-3 binder clips, which may allow pressure release, if necessary, but will keep the bags closed well enough otherwise. You can then seal the bags without first removing the clips or unfolding, or simply leave the clips in place and skip sealing.

    100% you can have the water up .25-5” the sides of the bottom bags, no doubt. I do it and so do many folks I know, because we’ll run 4 5lb bags and you have to have the trivet at a specific height to fit everything. It works great and no water gets in the bags and they seal themselves, and I fold and load them identical to you.
    Just thought I’d share so folks don’t have issues fitting everything. Just don’t let the water rise up the bags more than .5” at the very most, ideally .25” or not at all.

    Why do you run Millet without pre-hydrating, but not the Oats?

    Love the vid! Was curious what kind of laminar flow hood you use? Tried looking through your products used but didn’t see that at all.

    So if iv got a cloned sample in an ergot cup can i just buy uncle bens and cut open the bag and put it into another air tight bag with the ergot and just use that ?

      I think ergot needs to grow on live grain or live wheat that is and not on already harvested wheat grains

    Should I wrap the bags on aluminum foil?

    I'm really struggling with sealing my bags. They come out of the PC with beads of water between the layers of plastic. These beads make the impulse sealer not work properly.

    Thanks for all the good advice. Do you have a recipe for sawdust spawn bags using hardwood fuel pellets. There are several that have varying amounts of water, some with gypsum some not etc. Want use it to inoculate outdoor beds and reckon the critters would eat grain spawn.

    You can't put stainless steel in a pressure cooker, it will cause galvanic corrosion of the aluminum of the pressure cooker. You can, but not if it's touching any of the aluminum which it would have to be to hold the base up like that.

    What do you recommend jars or bags? I’m trying out making bags myself. 50/50 success with purchasing pre sterile bags. I like jars a little more.

    one thing i don''t get, is why not just impulse seal it before doing the sterilisation in the PC? the air should escape through the GE port anyway, right?

    • @Yewgeni-sj8uy
      @Yewgeni-sj8uy 9 місяців тому

      Not fast enough tho. The bag would blow up or the GE port would get damaged

    Question: what happens if you get as much air out of the bag, seal and pressure sterilise them. Will they explode? I came across a video where he seals then pressure cook them.

    • @Yewgeni-sj8uy
      @Yewgeni-sj8uy 9 місяців тому

      If you get enough of the air out I don’t think it would explode but I think that it could still damage the micropore patch. Just seal the bags after pressure cooking they will have a vacuum seal after PC ing anyways
