A couple of fun facts about this song: The original title was called "Escape". When the song became popular, people would go into record stores and ask the clerk "Do you have that pina colada song?" which is a reference to the lyric in the song. The record label had heard about this and decided to add in parenthesis (The Pina Colada Song). So, the full title of the song is "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)". This song also became the final #1 song of the 1970's, and the first #1 song of the 1980's. That was due to the fact that the song went to #1 on the Billboard charts in mid-December 1979, and stayed at #1 for several weeks going into 1980. No other artist or group has done that before.
When that song "Rapper's Delight" came out, people were flocking to record stores asking the clerk "Do you have song that goes hip-hop, a hippie-to the hip-hop"? which of course is the opening rhyme to the song. This is how the term "hip hop" came to be.
This is one of my wife's favorite songs, even before we met. She watched your reaction and got a big kick out of you two! You had her laughing! Thanks!
Personal ads or "the personals" in the newspaper is the print version of Craigslist. Newspapers of yesteryear were a major way of exchanging/expressing info before the internet.
@THOMAS CHUCK Every generation has the Goldilocks Effect. The older generations were lame and old and the new generations are flighty and want to change everything, but "our" (whatever/whenever that may be) is the best generation. Not too old to be a drag, not too young to know what we want, but juuust in the middle. Aaah, perfect.
It was definitely funny but it's also one of those things that annoys me. I mean she has the typical response. OMGerd this guy is a scumbag planning on cheating on his lady, cut his dick off, he's the worst person in the world, etc etc. Then you find out the lady who put in the ad first that he was responding to turns out to be his girlfriend and its all of sudden not bad but funny. I mean, he was responding to the ad which meant she was planning on leaving him before he was planning on leaving her. Why is it that when a guy plans to leave a girl that he's a prick or the worst person in the world but when a girl plans to leave a guy its all good and must be his fault? Its one of the many annoying double standards out there.
@O. B. except it's not... as stated its the "usual" reaction. IF it was the woman cheating, which she was planning to as well in the song, as it was her advertisement that he was responding to, the reaction by most women is this... the guy must have been doing something wrong for the woman to cheat on them. Yet if its the guy cheating on the woman, then he's a prick thinking with just his dick. Its a lose-lose for men on this subject. IF the guys cheating, he's a dick, IF the woman's cheating its because the guys a dick!! Its been that way forever, instead of it being maybe just the woman was a cheater and its not just the guy being bad!!
i love this song i knew the outcome this is an old old song. love it never gets old. HE GOT YOU BOTH GOOD!!!! fell into that one lol love it. great reaction.
I remember loving this song when I was younger.. before marriage and commitment... After marriage I resented it.. now as a long time married grandma I see the song talking about how we all get lazy in our relationship.. and how this song describes how a couple reconnected... And realized the love they originally had.. we all have to be aware and work on putting spice in our relationship... Lyrics are fun if you don't take it too seriously.
I believe Rupert was one of a few song writers who decided to actually sing their own songs. Not talking an actual singer song writer, talking about song writers who write and sell their music to artists. That's why he has the "middle school science teacher" vibe look. Dude is talented. Had the voice just not much on stage presence. Great song. Grew up in that era.
I have loved this song ever since I first heard it as a kid. And I can honestly say that this is the first time I've ever actually listened to the lyrics of the song besides the Pina Colada line!! I am just as shook as you bro! Never knew there was all that drama to this song, that's crazy! What else have I missed over the years?!?😂
What kids these days don't know is that unlike playing mp3 repeatedly nowadays back then you listen to songs on a casette tape and if you have a favorite song and play and rewind them often you'll wear it out quickly and the quality degrades with each replay thus "like a worn out recording of a favorite song".
I've always taken this song to be about a single important thing: don't let your relationship stagnant and never forget why you feel in love with your partner
Your reaction to this song is hands-down my favorite so far. This song was a big hit my senior year in high school so I'm well familiar with the punchline. There's a great interview with Rupert Holmes regarding this song on the UA-cam channel "The Professor of Rock." Anyway, loved your reaction. You paid attention to all the lyrics and I suspected the last verse was going to get to you both.
lol you guys made me cry laughing! Thanks for that. When it started to click for you guys that was the best part. Personal ads back then really was about all there was other than a phone call. lol Thanks guys for a great laugh.
To his credit, David Goldstein (a.k.a. Rupert Holmes) is a noted author, composer and musician. His lyrics are a testament to his genius, as he is not only a gifted artist, but a clever storyteller.
A fun thing about this song is that "Pina Colada" was "Humphrey Bogart" a few minutes before recording. He wanted to see if the story worked so he ran through the song for the band to see if they could see the twist before he got to it in the song. As he prepped to sing it the first time he thought the original chorus of "If you like Humphrey Bogart" had a noir feel and he wanted something fun and light so he picked a tropical drink. That one choice informed the rest of the song.
Loved the reaction! I knew you two would fall off your chairs when you found out that they were writing to each other! They both needed a break from the same old routine! It's sounds bad at first, until you hear the whole song. Very clever lyrics to a true "CLASSIC" song. GREAT REACTION YOU TWO!
One of your most hilarious reactions. It is so fun watching the two of you discovering music that us old farts take for granted (but still enjoy.) Please keep up the great work!
I worked as a chef on a cruise ship in Philly and they played this EVERY cruise but numerous times and it gets seared in your head. Glad you enjoyed....peace
He rewrote the lyrics to the song the night before going into the studio. He worried the surprise ending would be given away early so he recorded it straight through to see if his guitar player would figure it out. He realized his lyrics didn't fit the rhythm of the song so he squeezed them in or stretched them out to fit the music. He planned to fix the lyrics and re-record later but ran out of time and figuring it was just an album filler track he left it as is. The record company surprised him by wanting to release it as a single. That's why the song has a conversational feel to it that makes you pay more attention to the story.
So glad that you two actually pay attention to the lyrics of the songs you react to. Pretty sure that you don't have a copy of them as the video is playing so your reactions are priceless. There are so many songs that you can get lost in and not understand the meaning behind, but you guys pay very good attention. Love your show...
Oh my gosh! I have never laughed so hard over a reaction! Your reactions over the first two versus had me laughing and saying Wait, just wait. And then the third verse. I had to back and watch the whole reaction again.
He did the singing in one take. Never sang the song before and changed some lyrics. He wanted to sing it to see if others figured it out before the end. First time he sang is what was recorded. Amazing story
The lyrics of this song were originally supposed to be "If you like Humphrey Bogart"... but he wanted it to sound more like a tropical escape so he changed it to "Pina coladas" at the last minute. THANK GOODNESS! Can you even imagine? 😂

Your reactions are hillarious! Whenever I need a laugh I pull this up and watch.
Your reaction to this song is priceless!!!
Now do Paul Simon's 50 ways to leave your lover🍹🍹🍹🤔
Late In The Evening is another great Paul Simon jam.
THE 70s were soooooo much fun
"Just slip out the back Jack"😁 a guide on how to get free from narcissists and stalkers!
I'd never seen this video before. His facial expressions, how he thinks he's being so smooth, is priceless.
When y’all were so mad at him… I’m saying “Just wait… just wait… “ 😂
I was saying the same thing. Just wait…
I was on the edge of my seat waiting for them to find out 😂🤣😂🤣
Me too
It was definitely funny but it's also one of those things that annoys me.
This is one of the greatest pop songs ever!
This was by far the best reaction you've two done! Your shock was priceless.! ❤ you two!
YESSS! I’m so glad you guys did this song! I haven’t seen anyone else do it!🥰🥰
I’ve watched this at least four times and I crack up every time
Love Amber’s reaction to his girl walking in, had me laughing hard.
I've seen this song in a lot of reactions and they say he cheated first. But she wrote to the paper first.
You had the best reaction to this song.
What else have I missed over the years?!?😂
Watch the video for Physical by Olivia Newton John and listen to the lyrics. She was an eager little beaver.
ESCAPE WAS the last number 1 from the best decade ever ,,THE 1970s
What kids these days don't know is that unlike playing mp3 repeatedly nowadays back then you listen to songs on a casette tape and if you have a favorite song and play and rewind them often you'll wear it out quickly and the quality degrades with each replay thus "like a worn out recording of a favorite song".
Squirrelly, and utterly charming. What's not to love about this song?
The Squad's reaction is just too, darn cute!
I've always taken this song to be about a single important thing: don't let your relationship stagnant and never forget why you feel in love with your partner
Personal ads in the newspaper were the Tinder of their time.
This has to be the best reaction I have ever seen. You 2 had me cracking up so hard. Love your channel guys keep up the good work.
Y’all I actually pulled over to watch this! 😂😂😂 your reaction was beautiful! I had never seen the guy before…. And Im not sure how I feel now
That’s so funny! Be careful!!
Rupert is so cute in his science teacher sort of way
Loved the reaction! I knew you two would fall off your chairs when you found out that they were writing to each other! They both needed a break from the same old routine! It's sounds bad at first, until you hear the whole song. Very clever lyrics to a true "CLASSIC" song. GREAT REACTION YOU TWO!
I was laughing at you youngster's expressions. LOL Great song! Besides all that, Rupert has a great voice too!
Ha ha, greatest reaction ever. A song a lot of us have listened to for decades with a fresh new listen. You guys are priceless. Nice job.
This was such a huge hit in 70s ,,
You guys are 100% hilarious to watch! Loved your reaction to this song with a twist…🤣💕
I absolutely LOVE how the two of you have no idea what's about to transpire!!!!
You two are so young and innocent which is wonderful!
Instantly one of my favorite reaction videos ever...😂😂
Now do Jimmy Buffet - Margaritaville.
yes do it
I was thinking the same thing!
Absolutely 💯
And Cheeseburger in Paradise 🙌🏼🖖🏻
@@annpilgrim7685 yup
He did the singing in one take. Never sang the song before and changed some lyrics. He wanted to sing it to see if others figured it out before the end. First time he sang is what was recorded.
Amazing story
The lyrics of this song were originally supposed to be "If you like Humphrey Bogart"... but he wanted it to sound more like a tropical escape so he changed it to "Pina coladas" at the last minute. THANK GOODNESS! Can you even imagine? 😂
😆 No I can't.
Definitely wouldn't B a call I'd make.
If you like Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
then lets me up later and we can go ball !
Yeah I just imagined it and it's definitely not as romantic
This is the BEST reaction from you two!!!!! I was crying it was so funny!!! Every time you paused it I said to myself just wait🤣🤣🤣🤣
Best reaction EVER from you guys...... Big love.
