All of us elder Gen X folks out here thinking, "just wait" as you were reacting to the earlier parts of the song. 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking.
I also find this song both sad and happy at the same time. The thought that they were so unhappy that they needed to seek companionship elsewhere is sad to me, however because they were able to reconnect it's ultimately happy and I hope it helps with their communication with each other. I shake my head at the thoughts though as it's just a song, not real people, but that's where my mind goes.
Exactly
Yep
👍😂
💯
This song is a good example of why reaction channels work. WE KNEW - but you didn't know - that this song had a sweet happy ending.
It has a happy ending, and also years of couples counseling to follow. They have both established that they will cheat on each other after all.
his face made laugh..we knew, he didnt. awesome!
Priceless!
@@GraniteOwlBear Maybe? They might not have had a real commitment, just a casual relationship that became routine with no side relationships. People didn't talk about "Friends With Benefits" back then, but the idea certainly existed.
Naw...they didn't need counseling, never cheated on each other, and lived happily ever after. How do I know this? Because, to my knowledge, it's a fictional song and imaginary people always get happy endings when it's left up to me to predict the future! lol
I love it when people hear the last verse for the first time.
I just kept saying at every pause.... "Waaaaaaaaaaaait for it......"
ME, TOO!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Exactly!
So satisfying and I sit there and grin like an idiot.
I always liked the song but didn't listen to every word until about a year ago and I couldn't believe I missed the whole point of the song.
The look on your face when you figured out who she was.... PRICELESS!!!!
“THIS DUDE A PROFESSIONAL CHEATER AND JUST PUT IT ON WAX” cracked me tf up 🤣 love ya BP
Well, that WAS the intention!
everyone overlooks that HER add was there first for him to find....
@@briancasey3421Exactly. Who knows how many one night stands she had before she answered his ad. Lol.
Remember SHE was sleeping, HE was reading the personal ads. It was HER ad.
Exactly! I think it takes a second listen to put that whole picture into focus. He was just reading the paper and happen to look at the Personal Column and loved the ad so he replied to her! Love it!
believe it or not, this was the LAST Hot 100 number 1 of the 70s.
awesome pfp
Possibly the first #1 of the 80's, as well.
It was released in Sept. Not much left of '79. 😁
@@grrrthemad1595 “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes was the number one song at the beginning of 1980. It remained at the top of the charts until January 5, 1980,..."
How apropos
I learned everything I know about dancing from this guy.
😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣💃🕺💃🕺
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol, Almost made me spit my first sip of a brew!
LOL!!!!😂 😂😂😂😂
The look on your face was just great.
Right!!!
Never seen his eyes get so huge 😳
Barry Manilow's COPACABANA is the perfect follow-up 🥰
Kate Bush Baboshka
absolutlly!!!!
Yes! I was coming into the comments to make the same suggestion. The stories in the 2 songs are totally different & yet they seem like a perfect pair. 😊
@@sylvanaire That's so funny. I wasn't sure why Copacabana immediately came to mind but it's reassuring to know there must be some connection we recognize 😉
Another cliffhanger...
this starts off so sleazy and turns out wholesome and sweet. classic.
Well, they were both seeking to cheat on each other. At least they both realized that they were each other's special person. I'd say the real message is to keep on growing together and discovering new things about each other.
It does not turn out sweet and wholesome. That couple had serious problems.
But does it though?
We are old buggers who heard this song first time around - no WAY this would have been a big-assed radio in hit in 1979 if it did not have this ending! ;-) Those of you commenting on here that these people have a f*cked up relationship, etc -- look in the mirror. Most of us are always hiding something from everyone, even our partners. Get real, people do their best but they have their secrets. Paying down a mortgage, doing the 9-5, raising kids.... it is all hard, most of the time. People loved this song, because they saw themselves in the story, and the ending was, basically there is a point to "us", and what they would probably want for themselves, maybe....?
😂😂😂 Wholesome?? The lady was already cheating and he was just about to start. Even when I was a kid I understood how dark the song was.
My wife and I chuckle whenever we hear this song. The way the pair of lovers in this song have a laugh ("You were going to cheat on me? I was going to cheat on you! How charming! Hahahahahaha!").
🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
The AH HA moment was precious to behold peg. Bwahaha 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
one of the reasons we all addicted to Reactions!!!!
This song set a record. It was the last #1 song of 1979 and the first #1 song of 1980. So it was #1 in 2 decades
He was born here in Cheshire in England, a village called Nantwich, where they have a Pina Colada day every summer, he showed up there a couple of years ago and sung it for the locals, who were all drinking Pina Coladas obviously 😁
Wow, I didn’t know that. I don’t live too far (Wigan). When’s the next Pina Colada day? 🍍
I don’t drink anymore but if I just happened to be in that part of England on that day, I’d definitely be buying some piña coladas.
The look on your face when you realized they were meeting each other…PRICELESS!!😂
"Unibomber of Cheating!" Best line.
When you both try to cheat and still end up together. Thats how you know you’re truly meant to be.
Was laughing, waiting for the last verse. Your face was hysterical!
Fun fact: in the years after this song, Rupert Holmes has success writing for Broadway musicals. He lives in the Hudson Valley.
Yep, won two Tonys for the 1986 musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Had a very varied career.
This waz huge in 1979 the last number1 in song in the 70s
I’ve seen interviews with him. He’s so fascinating and hilarious! ❤
My niece went to one of the Caribbean islands (don’t remember which one since this was about 20/ 25 years ago) with a friend she met in school-the classmate was house sitting and was told she could go with a guest. Anyway, when she came back a month later she said the house belonged to a guy she never heard of who sang a song called Escape but she forgot his name. I said Rupert Holmes!! She was shocked and asked how I knew..they were there she whole month and didn’t put it together. They both knew the song but never as anything but the Pina Colada song.
@@JeffreyTheTaylorI was in the Mystery of Edwin Drood in High School....great times!
This is song shows why it's so important to honestly communicate in a relationship.
The Dahmer/Koresh/Dexter/Unabomber comparison!😂 Followed by BP's face to the last verse made it worth seeing!😂
Rupert actually looks alot like Democrat Don.
@@suicyco4life666 I hope Don changes his name, I wouldn't such a silly name attached to my name.
I was DIEING every time you stopped and tried to break it down! 😂 I was just like wait for it...wait for it...LMAO! Your reaction when the script was flipped...priceless! 😝
I love this song. I love the sound of it, it’s so relaxing, but it’s also funny and deep at the same time. He’s pointing out that we sometimes take our spouses for granted and that if we look closer we can find that flame again.
Bwahahaha. There it is, the reveal. Worth the wait. Bwahahaha. First reviewer who didn't get mad and shut down over the song. You actually saw the beautiful irony
Everyone has heard this song. And most think it's a cheesy vacation track with a good hook. But those of us who have LISTENED to it know its true GENIUS. Love it! One of my favorite songs.
Yes it's always fun to see people really listen for the first time.
I remembered the song playing on the radio from back in the day...but only the tune and the Pina Colada "hook" line. Like BP, my mouth hit the floor when I LISTENED to the lyrics and the true story unfolded. Wow...the guy was an amazing storyteller... Had me fooled! Loved it!
This song is just like a great thriller where you think you have the movie plot figured out only to be proven totally wrong at the end!
Nailed it 🔨
@@cherylbrowning3303 Thank you very much. And if you like thrillers, if you haven’t already seen it, watch “Hypnotic” with Ben Affleck. I’m not a Big Ben Affleck fan but I’d watch that movie over & over. I would’ve bet that I had that movie figured out 5 or 6 times only to find out I was wrong every time!
I was a teen when this came out and my friends and I thought he looked like your math teacher singing about cheating! 😆
I was a pre-teen when it came out. It got a lot of airplay. But I am thinking more like a history teacher.
A substitute teacher.
The story behind the making of this song is wild. He'd hired a studio and musicians to record another song but one of the studio musicians was so drunk he passed out and the session was scrubbed. In compensation he was offered a shorter slot the next day. But for some reason he couldn't record the same song. So that night he wrote this song but the original hook line was "If you like Humphrey Bogart..." It didn't scan right so he switched it on the fly in mid-recording.
This is one of those songs that you need to know all of the words to in order to truly appreciate it.
Your reaction was priceless when you got the full meaning. Just shows that don't judge a song's meaning till the end.
The message of this song is communication...They both love the same things but didn't even realise it
Love this song. My husband and I have been married 43 years! We've had our ups and downs, but all these years later, we still love each other, still make each other laugh and still enjoy spending time with each other. It takes commitment to one another and a desire to make it work when you hit those dry spells or face some of life's harsher realities.
Hear hear, been married 24 years together 28. Laugh and spend time together.
Congratulations! 39 years here on June 1. And yes, it's not always easy but there's comfort and love. I don't know whatt I would do if I didn't have hubby all of a sudden. Most of my life has been us together.
This was the coolest thing to watch bc you can only get surprised by the lyrics once. And watching you be shocked was amazing!!!
Yes!!!! Another one I can cross off of my list!! I love throwing this one at reactors and watching the realization come across their faces when it finally hits what this song is actually about! The twist at the end gets everyone!! 😆 Love it!!
My ex hated this song with a passion. For some reason I always had the compulsion to hum it around the house
Great example of what happens when you get ahead of the lyrics and say things that suddenly blow up in your face. Live and learn.
Love this - was waiting for your reaction at the twist - but he does look like a maths teacher! 😂
Written by Rupert Holmes. Fun happy 😊 song 🎵. Definitely 👍 in yacht rock 🎸.
He wrote a song for the Tongan 🇹🇴 American group in 1985.
Suggested video 📹: The Jets perform You Got It All.
Rupert Holmes is a very successful singer/song writer/hit song producer. He sang on many studio groups... like Timothy from the Buoys.
I heard this song a million times and then one day I LISTENED to it......
Don’t be dissing on Rupert Holmes, I personally dig his understated teacher/dad vibes 🥰 He has pure musical talent with his career writing for Barbara Streisand and other artists. Not too many people were into Yoga in the 70’s, it was considered for the earthy hippy dippy types ✌🏽 His song, ‘Him’ is another catchy tune.
🤣🤣I was waiting for your reaction to the verse where his wife comes in and you didn't disappoint😮.🤣🤣
BP: 🎶👀😱🤯🤦♀
Me: 🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤩
My favorite BP reaction EVER
It’s amazing how many relationships fall flat due to communication from both sides
You're face was perfect!
we all knew....and we knew you didn't know....and we all just sat and waited till the curtain dropped. You did not disappoint.
I was working at a record store when this came out. People would come in and ask for "That Pina Coleda song" -(The first pressings only used the Escape title but the changed it because no one knew it by the title.)
Rupert Holmes was an accomplished songwriter long before this song, having worked with the likes of Barbara Streisand.
Before that, he wrote the hit song "Timothy" in 1970, the only top song hit written about cannibalism! 😀
Oh oh, Uncle Budzey.
The guy who wrote, and who is singing, this song is also the author of a (hopefully) fantasy book called "Murder your employer." Make of that what you will.
Your facial expressions 😂😂😂 I’m dead! 💀😂😂
This song points out how important communication is in a relationship.
Between the Margarita song and the Pina Colada song, these songs told the messages of those times.
I still just love watching your reactions. Catching up on worlds you never knew existed.
Rupert Holmes is no stranger to writing songs that generate attention. He wrote and played piano on one of the most infamous pop songs to become an international hit. "Timothy" by "The Buoys", released in 1970. You should listen to it on- or off-air. Can't lie, it would be fun to see you react to it and try to decipher why it was so controversial.... 😊
LOL now you got to do the streak
One of the most deepest, thoughtful lovestories I’ve ever heard, with a wink and a serious message at the same time. When it comes to relationships my big goal is to never ever stop trying to get to know and learn from that one that you once fell in love…. Never stop being curious, adventurous about you, your partner and your relationship. And let things go as well ❤
As others have said, I was so happy to see you react to this song, and it did not disappoint. You love the songs that tell a story, and this one is priceless. Rupert did not waste a syllable in this one, and that plot twist is unforgettable once you hear it.
I never got a "married" vibe from this. It seemed like the living together thing that everyone was doing back then, because the economy was crap and you needed someone to share the rent, so you might as well sleep together too. 😁 Things were different pre-AIDS. I always liked it because it seemed like they finally communicated instead of just going through the motions and maybe it could become a.lasting relationship.
WHOA!!!!!! I have never seen the guy singing this song!! I’m in SHOCK!! He looks like my English teacher from the 70’s.😂😂😂😂
I think if the song did not have a happy ending it would not have become such a classic, gigantic hit. And funnily, Rupert gives Dahmer vibes at first, but by the end...he's adorable!!! Lol
Love your channel, ❤ to the new baby.
Spontaneous is working, I’m loving it. ❤️❤️❤️👵🏼 Gmaw
Terrific reaction!! We older folks love love love this one. You can sing to it because you know all the words!!!
This song does a wonderful job of pointing out the importance of good communication in a relationship.
He’s won 3 Tony awards, multiple Drama Desk awards and the Edgar award.
Talented dude
That is quintessential 70's fashion straight out of the Sears catalog!
This used to be one of my go to karaoke songs. Love it.
Oooh, karaoke songs. Can't say this was one of mine; I'm more of a 'Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)' by Looking Glass guy.
The cycle of most relationships ... after time, you don't necessarily get bored but you do often get complacent and take things for granted. Find a way to change things up, talk, etc. It was great to see your reaction .when you're unrealized ... then you thought about everything you'd said. 😂😂😂 Great reaction (as always)!!! 💞
You gotta remember this was decades before Social Media everyone used personal ads back in the day....
Love it when people finally HEAR IT! 😂 Thanks, best reaction ever!
classic.. just timeless and classic...
Rupert is awesome love his songs. lol Rupert gotcha you didn't see that coming did you????
lmao that reaction was priceless. Not one to watch while your family is sleeping at 3 amish because you are gonna wake their ass laughing. So glad you did this song. The song is brilliant lol Great reaction!
They both tried to cheat and they both failed at it. Kinda funny. The look on your face at the end was priceless.
Might have been better if Rupert didn't dress like a math teacher from the 70s though.
Classic story of two people who've been together so long and thought they knew each other so well, they stopped communicating. Then they find out they really didn't know each other as well as they thought.
Old Movie Stars Dance To Uptown Funk
I love the twist of this song that they turned out to have things in common they didn't know about and were able to rekindle their romance. Or at least I like to think so.
180, not 360.
This song got a second life when it made the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. Love it 😁😁
This was before "style" mattered MORE than the music or musician. Another great one by Rupert Holmes is "HIM".🥂
Ah yes, another song about cheating. lol Good tune.
I always had a soft song for Nearsighted - cuz I wore glasses
Oh my days your face 😂what a brilliant reaction made my day
How's that new "Brightly" baby of yours?
The unibomber of cheating! That was classic! Your look was priceless when it got to the end! Loved, loved, loved your reaction!
This is the ultimate guilty pleasure song... Great reaction!
Wait for it...wait for it ... wait for it...BAM! Watching your reaction was worth it. As others mentioned we knew the twist.
I needed this laugh today. That reveal was perfect 😂
That face when he gets to the last verse is great.
The hook is awesome on this song! And while you were down on the guy at first, remember that he was responding to HER ad! Love your channel, by the by!
One of his other songs 'Him' went to #6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Oops 🤣🤣🤣
Pina Coladas = Cheese Enchiladas. You will never hear it the same again 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'll take both 😂
@@tgutz4332 🤣🤣🤣
It cracks me up that the guy looks like a science teacher from 1978.
People need to remember that when this song was written we did not have computers, the internet, and especially did not have Tinder or Match, Bumble, etc.
What we did have was the newspaper. At the back of all major newspapers were "The Classifieds" (like Craigslist). There were sections in The Classifieds for different topics: Help Wanted or Looking for Work, Items for sale, Used cars privately sold... and then you had The Personals. The Personals is where people could buy a few sentences to describe what kind of person they wanted to meet and then you would have your phone number listed.
The Classifieds section of the newspaper is what this song is about.
Loving your reaction to this, again, another one of those songs where people don't think of the lyrics! I was sitting there from the beginning waiting for you to get to the last verse just to see your expression! Cheers brother!
Before this song, Rupert Holmes also wrote The Buoys slightly disturbing tune "Timothy," which would be their only hit.
You really need to listen to Timothy.
😮
Fact is Rupert Holmes looks like a math teacher from the middle school somewhere in the Midwest.
Your response was hilarious! I laughed so hard! 🤣 😂😂😂😂
oh your face!!!! Love that
Gawd I love your reactions. Facial reactions verbal reactions........
Rupert Holmes may not have the looks of a popartist... but he can write good songs! For other artists, and for himself. His track "Adventure" will always be one of the highlights of 1981 for me.
This reaction made my day!! 😂😂😂 That shocked face when reality hit. ☠️
Best reaction to this tune ever!!!
He looks like my science teacher back in the day!
The song is actually about COMMUNICATION, he is saying if you take the time to communicate with your partner you will always have a better relationship.
My favorite part was when you said "What if this chick is trash?"....let the man cook.
I love people's reactions to the song (who never really listened to it before), especially at the end, it's so funny.
