It’s about lack of communication. Sometimes we think our relationships have become stale and we don’t enjoy each other’s company anymore, when in reality, we’ve simply stopped communicating. Good song.
The song makes you think the story is about a man unhappy in his relationship so he is looking for someone else. "as much as they do now" Nice dream. Sorry, reality is still the same. *Some* people communicate, most don't. Communication is *hard*.
I think you missed something here. She wrote the original ad and SHE liked Pina Coladas, loved the rain, didn't like yoga, and wanted someone that was smart (or had at least half a brain 😁). He responded with his own ad saying, "Yeah, I like Pina Coladas, getting caught in the rain ...". So, both of them were looking for something different, but their REAL problem was, a lack of communication, which is why MANY relationships fail. It sounds bad that both were looking elsewhere, but it seems like they were not married, and just coming to the conclusion that they were not happy, when all the time, they just didn't communicate, probably because they didn't want to make waves. What they learned in the end was, that's what makes a relationship work ... communicating.

This song was Rupert Holmes' debut song. Not only that this song went all the way to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the very last week of December, 1979; but this song was the very last #1 hit song of the 1970s according to Billboard Magazine. What a way to end the 1970s with a cheesy, but yet a great pop song indeed!!!
The song was just originally called Escape, but after people heard it on the radio, they kept calling up radio stations asking the DJs to play the "Pina Colada Song." So the record company stuck (The Pina Colada Song) onto the title.
Back in the days before social media (or the internet), one of the ways people used to meet was through "Personals" ads in the newspaper. They could be interesting to read, even if you weren't looking to find somebody, just to see what people were looking for and how they had expressed it. The "if you have half a brain" part was in the ad she had placed originally (the one he responded to in the second verse) - it means she's tired of people who have no brain and would be happy with somebody who at least had half of one. They had both made assumptions about the other without seeing the reality, that they already had exactly the right person for them.
Like others have said, she wrote the first add, talking about not being into yoga and if someone out there has half a brain. That saying, if you have half a brain, is just her saying she doesn't want any idiots responding, someone with at least half a brain's worth of sense, or don't bother. Awesome song, glad you both liked it.
It also has a little airplay in Shrek. Cute song. It comes down to they were in a rut cuz they didn't realize what the other was thinking or wishing they had in their life. Need to communicate. 🙂
I’m old so I can help with that classic old expression “if you have half a brain” Back in the day (the 70s) it simply meant that you’re not a fool or an idiot or you’re mildly smart or wise. It was often used in relation to some kind of action and may also convey general ambition. Ie. “when he re-paints that truck if he has half a brain he’ll use 2 coats of primer”… So glad you guys reacted to this 70s classic tune. Cheers !
She wrote the first personal ad saying, "If you're not into yoga. If You have half a brain." So it was his girlfriend who first went behind his back looking for someone different, who was NOT a hippie health nut and who was NOT dumb as a door knob. She's saying that she wants someone who IS on the smart side and NOT dumb and who has common sense.
The whole point of the songs is that even when people live together, they can have terrible communication. However... in this instance... they both actually loved what each had to offer, even though neither of them outwardly knew it. Relationships are tough, and sometimes we as humans love each other, but fall out of love be cause we forget each other's passions.
Way back in the early day when I first got on the interweb and found YT, someone had made a video to this song using The Sims 2. For the time it was very good and fit the song perfectly. It's still available on YT.
There is a famous story about a French couple that did grow old together. They never talked about which side of the breakfast bun they preferred though. They both just assumed that one liked the top and the other liked the bottom. When the subject finally came up, they had both assumed wrong. For a whole life. Communication is like... important. :)
The women he goes to meet was his women he had at home. They had been posting ads to each other whilst under the same roof... And learnt new things about one another. I love this song... Never picked up on the lyrics too much until I started watching reactions 😅

If you like piña coladas And gettin' caught in the rain If you're not into yoga If you have half a brain If you like makin' love at midnight In the dunes on the cape Then I'm the love that you've looked for Write to me and escape. The second time it was his response to her ad

How many people answered that ad and how many had she gone out with before she ran into him?
she only wrote the ad he answered so it could be him that stepped out not that it matter they both were ready to cheat lol

Cheers !
Ultimately, it's about the benefits of honesty.
"This guy's a mess!' LOL, Brad!
When they say “if you have half a brain,” the “at least” is implied. In other words, it’s the minimum requirement, not a limit.
That bar "O'Malley's" is a Real place on A1A near Miami/South Beach .. Seems Rupert hung out there quite a bit
Rupert was a band member of the Buoys that gave us the song “Timothy”!
They are like you. Perfect!
There's a dope video of this that shows Rupert in all his glory...
When he says half-brain he means that he wants her to have at least a little bit of intelligence. In other words, someone he can talk to.
opening back-beat drum intro is de-lovely.
The whole point of the songs is that even when people live together, they can have terrible communication. However... in this instance... they both actually loved what each had to offer, even though neither of them outwardly knew it. Relationships are tough, and sometimes we as humans love each other, but fall out of love be cause we forget each other's passions.
Love this song. Brings back great memories of the beach in So Cal in 79.
SHE is the one that put the first ad in, asking for someone who was NOT into yoga and stuff. He responded bc the ad matched his likes.
Way back in the early day when I first got on the interweb and found YT, someone had made a video to this song using The Sims 2. For the time it was very good and fit the song perfectly. It's still available on YT.
I only think of Guardians of the Galaxy when I hear this any more.
It’s a reminder that no matter how long or how intimately you know someone there’s always something more to learn about them.
Also another song called Key Largo by Bertie Higgins . it's this style as well .
Y'all should try "Guess Who I Saw Today" by Nancy Wilson, "Who's Making Love" & "Cheaper To Keep Her" by Johnnie Taylor & "She's Got Papers On Me" by Richard "Dimples" Fields feat. Betty Wright.
"Him" from Rupert Holmes is so far superior- you owe it to yourselves to check it out!
Great song and end !
Girl had been out there drinking champagne with other guys for some time.
Yacht rock hit!

I loce this song, but I have to admit thst when I first heard it st age 10, the story when way over my head. LOL. I just knew that the song was catchy and eadyvtoxsing along with. Cheers!
I love this song i knew the outcome of this song it is one of my favorites.
the first time they do the ad in the paper it was her that posted it looking for someone else.
If you like piña coladas
And gettin' caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga
If you have half a brain
If you like makin' love at midnight
In the dunes on the cape
Then I'm the love that you've looked for
Write to me and escape.
The second time it was his response to her ad
This song, and especially the video was pretty cheesy, but it was so damn catchy. The hook in the story is what made it a guilty pleasure for so many people. A song you hate to admit that you really like...
you have the best reactions & I think you are the best couple i ever seen giving reactions! God Bless!!
All I can think if when I hear this is the movie Dirty Work. They're about to have a bar fight and Chris Farley goes to the jukebox and says something like "Street fight man, G7!!!!!!!" Then someone says, "You just pressed G8". Then this song comes on and they have to have a bar fight to this song lol. R.I.P. Chris Farley.
the music video makes this song even better
His next hit " him" was also an adultery story. " I know who left those smokes behind" lol
