I was 4 when it was on the charts. I was listening to this song when I was 14 & STILL didn't know what it was about! I was so innocent. 😂 Now I'm 50, and I've known for quite some time.
I remember my Nana telling me that my boyfriend & I shouldn’t live together b/c Bill (her boyfriend of 30 years) had never spent a night under her roof. My response: “Nana, nothings been invented that can’t be done in the day”
I loved watching the expressions on her face once she realized what the song was about and started understanding the hidden metaphors of the rest of the lyrics
I've watched that part about 8 times now! 🤣 After that one line, she really listens intently to the lyrics. I think Jay should watch that part & see her reaction. It's priceless!
I was really young when this came out quite innocent I think I was 14 or 15. And then I recognized what it was all about a couple of years later. I smiled... rubbing Sticks and Stones together make the Sparks ignite
I can’t believe Amber caught on to the meaning of this song before you did Jay!! That was hysterical!! Yep it’s about getting your groove on in the afternoon!! Good job Amber!!
Just watched this reaction so funny seeing you both Jay grooving along with the bass just 😊then Amber getting into the lyrics 😮😮😊😁🥳in the afternoon loved Amber's expression 😂😂😊❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

...... so funny....... light bulb moment!!! And as for "Sky rocket's in flight" is their way of describing the male's function in their "Afternoon Delight". So cute song in harmony.... in more ways than one!!!!
I understand getting lost in the music and not getting the meaning of the lyrics. It was years before I realized what they were talking about, but in my defense I was 10 when this song came out.
I remember a guy telling a story about this song. He was older and he picked his parents up at the airport. He was digging thru the radio for a station to listen to and they caught the beginning of this song. His mom said leave it in cuz she liked that song. Midway thru the song, he realized what it was about for the first time. "Mom, this song's about a nooner!" he said. She replied, laughing, "It took you 36 years to figure that out?"
When my sissy and I were like 12-14 and this song came on the radio, my mom would yell from the other room, "turn that filth off!" Every time I hear this song, its the first thing I think of! lol :D
I can still recall being on the playground, discussing this song with friends in 5th grade, when this song came out in 1976. It was Scandalous. Great reaction Amber!
I love Ambers reaction when she finally figured out the song is about having sex. "Afternoon Delight" They sound so sweet you don't realize what they are really singing about 'til you've been sucked in.
Maybe its me but I thought everyone knew old or young what AFTERNOON DELIGHT was. I was just a kid when this came out and I knew what it meant. At least Amber caught on. When Amber told Jay his reaction was priceless NO ITS NOT!! In my world its usually the woman's head that it would go over. Kudos to Amber.
3:19 The look on Amber's face when the penny drops is priceless. Us old fogies have known what that phrase means for so long, we forget that today's kids probably haven't heard it much. :-)
This song came out in 76 and it was an immediate hit and "Delight"😁 And I know that all of us who know this song was waiting for ya'll to get it's meaning. And at 3:23 Amber got it😂😂 And poor Jay didn't😄 Thanks for reacting to this! Hadn't heard it in a long time.
Amber's look of recognition was a delight to see. 😜 But it was a lot different then the one my mom had while the whole family (of 7) is driving down the highway singing along to this song. Singing a long with all your teenage kids..then realizing it's about some afternoon "hook up" time! Great song, fabulous reaction from Amber, and a joyous trip back in my memories!
Yep, it's about doing a little something something in the afternoon.. lol! 😉😊😜 The group inter-dynamics would probably be more like Abba who were a group of two couples also.🙂
Ha ha ha, you guys are so sweet, I am still cracking up. Yes, you are right Amber that is what the song means. It's funny you think that back in the 70's, people would have been shocked by this song, but they were not. I think it's harmonies are so incredibly beautiful and sweet, it makes the song have a pure and dreamy sound. A lot of parents have their own "little afternoon delights" walking around today because of this song. :) Love you guys have a great day.
I was wondering if either of them would catch what 'afternoon delight' actually meant. Thumbs up Amber, you got it and your expression when it clicked was great.
I loved this song LONG before I could understand what this song was about. But has there ever been a more beautiful song about an upcoming gettin'-it-on? Love it!
My older siblings would play this and get me to sing along when I was, like 5 or 6. They said it was "cute". When I was 12 I heard it again and went "OMG! They knew all along!" My siblings were jerks, lol.
@@rhondawest6838 My grandparents got me to sing Elvis' "Hound Dog" for them when I'd come over. Of course at 3-to-5, I thought this was about an actual dog...not a cheater.

Starland Vocal Band was signed to John Denver's WINDSONG label. Bill and Taffy Danoff (FAT CITY) co-wrote Take Me Home, Country Roads with John Denver (and sang backup on that tune). Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman (who were married at the time) were the other half of the group. Jon Carroll was just out of his teens when they recorded this tune and he also did the vocal arrangement, as well.
My husband and I engaged in some afternoon delight from time to time, so wonderful!❤ Almost 32 years married now and still love each other! It just gets better and better! Love your face Amber when you realize what “afternoon delight” is, priceless lol! Starland Vocal Band had beautiful beautiful harmonies! ❤
The "skyrockets in flight" line was very relevant at the time because it was the #1 hit at the time of our nation's bicentennial on July 4th 1976. I remember fireworks everywhere at the time this song was all over the radio. This song is about a few "fireworks" of it's own.
That was a great year. Moving from the big city to country land. Having to ride a bus to school - no walking. My own bedroom. I'll always hold it near my heart
Correction "Silly Love Songs" by McCartney and Wings was #1 on 7/4/76. Afternoon delight hit #1 the following week. It was still all over the radio at that time and it's the song I think of when I think of the bicentennial.
This was one of those great summer songs of the late 70's. My favorite of this genre was "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck featuring an epic marimba solo by Bo Wagner. A few other light ones were "I Like Dreaming" by Kenny Nolan and "Do You Wanna make Love" by Peter McCann.
Excellent suggestions. Haven't heard any of these in a long time but thinking about them instantly takes me back to the softer side of the 70s, in a nostalgic and sentimental way.
its funny cause it sounds like such an innocent song but yes it is about making whoopee in the afternoon and about couples who just couldn't wait until night time to get it on with each other i just laughed when Anber almost blushed when she picked up on the songs meaning about couples having some hot loving in the afternoon before the sun sets for the night, just classic music here.

This song was born from a restaurant menu* that had a small section called 'Afternoon Delight' and Bill Danoff took that with him and worked the song for a long time until he came out with this version. But yes, by the lyrics, isn't anything about what's on the menu. Loved your video! *This fact can be found on UA-cam.
Amber you are right the song was about grabbing some afternoon loving. The look on your face the moment you realized what the song was about was great. They were basically a one hit wonder, they might of had a minor hit after this but do not remember for sure. Great reactions guys, keep up the great work. You all have a blessed day.
What I love the most about this song I mean I love everything about this song but what I love the most is how they talk about the subject matter and such a sweet and I don’t wanna say innocent way maybe that’s the wrong word but you know what I mean, it’s just such a sweet adorable song
This song was all over the radio for a time. It brings back a specific memory of sitting around with a female friend when this song came on. She said, "I'm so tired of that f***ing in the afternoon song."
I was 5 when this came out... I remember singing along with it every time it came on the radio.... and I also remember it taking several years before I knew what the song was about.... then thinking, "omg no wonder all the grownups laughed when I'd sing and dance to this!!!!!!!!"
I have watched this with family and friends probably 10 times already. It never gets old! In case it's not listed below--Bill & Taffy Danoff from Starland Vocal Band co-wrote "take me home, country roads" with John Denver and sang harmony on it as "Fat City".
I was 4 years old when this hit #1, and I remember it very well! I obviously didn't know what it was about at that age, but it was different than everything else that was out. I think that's why it did so well on the singles chart.
You really need to catch the episode of Arrested Development where Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), grabs his niece, Maeby, and jumps on stage to duet on this song in order to enliven the family company's holiday party - the look on his face when he realizes what the song is about, and that he's singing it to his niece, is priceless comedy gold! My sides hurt just thinking about it! 🤣
It also pops up memorably (and humorously) during "Good Will Hunting," and later plays over the closing scene. It's hard for me to hear it without thinking of this and the Arrested Development scenes (not just Michael and Maeby singing it, but later Lindsay and George Michael, to similar effect).
One of the two married couples in this band came from John Denver's backing band. Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert share songwriting credits with John Denver on take Me Home Country Roads. They also co-wrote the John Denver hit I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado. Starland vocal Band had a TV variety show for a hot minute. It was one of David Letterman's earliest gigs in television. He was a writer and a regular cast member.
Haven't heard this in decades, loved your epiphany Amber, but this reminded me of another hit this same year. More, more, more by Andrea True Connection. Try that one
Jay and Amber you guys done well this week when other guys doing your job dropped the ball (imho)! Love the way that Jay is usually drawn to the drum and bass of any song and he gets hooked in that way when Amber bounces around more to the vibe/feel of it. You both get the songs in your own way and you're a great combo together so keep up the good work guys 👍
Lol! Ding! Amber’s got it! Yes, this is about getting a little lovin in when the mood hits. Sometime in the 2000’s the daughter of one of the couples was on a game show and introduced herself as “ the product of some afternoon delight. “
When I was a kid, about 7 years old, my clock radio woke me up to this song. But before I woke it filtered into my dream and I was seeing rockets blast off on a sunny day. I woke up in one of the best moods ever. Of course as a kid I had no idea what the real meaning of the song was ;) Best use of this song in a movie was in Anchor Man.
Starland vocal band! What a well hidden gem. This song and the band are two of my all-time favorites. This tune is such a sonically pleasing little morsel. Perfect production, arrangement. Killer ending🎊
This song takes me back to the early to mid 70's. Her name was Debbie and it was at church camp. We didn't while at church camp but I used to go down and visit her brother in Arkansas. We never consumated out relationship, but the song was ours and always will be.
Amber got it. One funny scene from Arrested Development was Michael Bluth and his young niece Maybe doing this song as a duet on stage without realizing the subject matter. As they sang the words from the screen, it became clear.... wrong song choice!
I love Amber's face when she realized what it's about. Lol. Us older folks k own what afternoon delight means. 😊

I was 5 when this came out... I remember singing along with it every time it came on the radio.... and I also remember it taking several years before I knew what the song was about.... then thinking, "omg no wonder all the grownups laughed when I'd sing and dance to this!!!!!!!!"
What a delightful way to spend an afternoon. And they ‘Finish’ together! For me, that’s been awhile but always liked this song !!!
😁
I have watched this with family and friends probably 10 times already. It never gets old! In case it's not listed below--Bill & Taffy Danoff from Starland Vocal Band co-wrote "take me home, country roads" with John Denver and sang harmony on it as "Fat City".
I was 4 years old when this hit #1, and I remember it very well! I obviously didn't know what it was about at that age, but it was different than everything else that was out. I think that's why it did so well on the singles chart.
Loved Amber's face when she realized what they were talking about in the song. It is a favorite song of mine. :)
There is an old Murphy Brown episode that featured this song. Now that hilarious!
It also pops up memorably (and humorously) during "Good Will Hunting," and later plays over the closing scene. It's hard for me to hear it without thinking of this and the Arrested Development scenes (not just Michael and Maeby singing it, but later Lindsay and George Michael, to similar effect).
🤣Love it when Amber caught on.
I thought Letterman actually played bass on this song.
Bill and Taffy actually wrote most of “Take me Home Country Roads.” Denver just added his two cents and recorded it with them.
@@halweiss8671 Bill and Taffy wrote the first verse and the chorus before John pitched in and helped them finish it.
@@willdwyer6782 Thanks for that information.
SVB were also signed to John Denver's record label "WindSong Records".
Of course as a kid I had no idea what the real meaning of the song was ;)
Best use of this song in a movie was in Anchor Man.
OMG.They played this song ad nauseum on the radio. In those days you couldn't switch off the song, you just had to listen to every song.
I was waiting for you guys to get the meaning of this. So funny. A classic for sure. Great voices harmonizing
Starland vocal band! What a well hidden gem. This song and the band are two of my all-time favorites. This tune is such a sonically pleasing little morsel. Perfect production, arrangement. Killer ending🎊
funny because this is one of the worst songs I thought I've ever heard Different Strokes I guess
@@jmm1817 lol..yeah, I guess so. Guess all ears did not come off of the assembly line the same😊
This song takes me back to the early to mid 70's. Her name was Debbie and it was at church camp. We didn't while at church camp but I used to go down and visit her brother in Arkansas. We never consumated out relationship, but the song was ours and always will be.
Love this 'guilty pleasure' song! Never get tired of it❤😎
Amber got it.
One funny scene from Arrested Development was Michael Bluth and his young niece Maybe doing this song as a duet on stage without realizing the subject matter.
As they sang the words from the screen, it became clear.... wrong song choice!
I was there in the 70's when this song came out. It was a huge hit. You wouldn't believe how many little old ladies were humming along without a clue.
