What Happened to Creed?

  • Creed was the most successful rock band of the late nineties and early two thousands, but their rapid success was not the cinderella story that many dream about when becoming a famous musician.
Their albums My Own Prison, Human Clay, and Weathered have stood the test of time in the hearts and minds of rock music fans. So, where are they now?

"My Own Prison." Never been a fan of the band but that sentence just absolutely floored me. It's so true. Despite being free, many humans imprison themselves, unknowingly, in their own jail. It might be a prison of negativity, self-doubt or hate. It could be a prison of drugs, dysfunction or addiction. No one put you there. To paraphrase Soundgarden, "break your rusty cage and run." Take control of your mind and give yourself control. Stop conceding to drugs.

As I've been binge watching these videos tonight awake with insomnia I'm uplifted to see so many of these stories ending with the musicians finding sobriety. It shows addiction can strike anyone. The neighbor next door or the world famous rockstar, but it also shows anyone can find recovery once they're ready for it. I've been homeless and hopeless while in a ten year addiction to pain killers but I'm blessed to be sober today. Recovery is possible for anyone once their eyes are open to it. No one else but the addict can make the decision. But once they're ready, it is possible.

Nancy Erskine I remember someone making a video called something like "Nu metal albums I can't believe I used to like," that's how I feel about Creed, I'm still going to like them no matter what anyone else says, because my taste of music is not dictated by popular opinion. Just because something falls out of favour, does it mean it's bad. I not only fully admit to liking Creed, as well as many other post-grunge bands, I'll even defend early Nickelback, I like some of the songs on the state, so yes I know it's an unpopular opinion, but it's my opinion. Even though I will admit to liking some Nickelback songs, Creed was a much better band.

I was 12 when Weathered came out and remember how often they would play One Last Breath & My Sacrifice on Kerrang TV but if people would take the time to delve into their albums, past their 4 massive hit singles, there are at least 15 amazing songs! ‘Inside Us All, Wash Away Those Years, Faceless Man, One, Are You Ready?, Torn, My Own Prison, Hide, Bullets, Who’s Got My Back?, Weathered’ and more! Great band imo.

I love metal, but creed's music and even their lyrics which carried a deep meaning, struck me even as a kid. and as much as I love them til this day and so does my wife, I'd rather not have a creed reunion if it means scott stapp is clean and dedicates all of himself to his well being and his family. but if it can happen and he stays healthy, man I would rejoice. I have a soft spot for him not just for the music, but because a sibling of mine has bipolar disorder as well and I know it can turn a normal person into someone despicable and full of heartache. Hey, I respect your opinion, but Creed were soft and frilly? I am not sure if you've heard the first three albums by Creed, they sounded quite authentic with some really tasteful melodies and heavy notes to me.. The sound was't overdone, it was the 4 basic essentials of a rock band, the bass, the drums , the guitars and the vocals. I couldn't hear any frills in the sound. Their sound to me was quite dynamic, they had soft ballads and then they had heavy mid temp songs for the most part, really tasteful vocal melodies, and some really beautiful imagery which was probably ignored cuz of a few overplayed hits that most people are familiar with. I believe the popular songs are pretty damn good as well, but they were just overplayed, which led to some hate I guess. Its like people listening to only Nothing Else Matters from Metallica and having an opinion on the band. you should probably give My Own Prison and Human Clay a listen in their entirety, there is some really heavy shit there, unless your definition of heavy is only noise. Regardless, its only more of new music for you to listen to , if you haven't already :).

      Hey!
If you would like to discover a heavier side of Creed, I very much suggest their comeback album Full Circle. The first half is stellar heavy rock, more tempo than they had on most of their first three albums. Tracks like Bread of shame and Fear (that riff!!) are pretty close to metal in my opinion!

I was very fortunate two years ago to play a gig with Brian Marshall, preceded by a few practices. He is the most down-to-Earth guy I know. He is humble and it was a blast to play on stage with him as the other half of the rhythm section. When part of our band later got to meet Tremonti, he was just as humble and personable. It’s a shame Creed broke up early on, however, because of that, we were introduced to Alter Bridge.

Rock Feed left out some things, like how Scott embarked on a solo career during the time Alter Bridge formed and released 2 albums ("The Great Divide" in 2005 and "Proof of Life" in 2013). He also put out his book memoir titled "Sinner's Creed" in 2012. On top of that, he joined Art of Anarchy and put out an album with them in 2017 before their downfall. Other than that, this is a great video well put together overall. 🤘

@@adamw116 That "weak" song is actually titled "The Great Divide" (same title as the album). The album had moderate success, even though it still went platinum. Have you actually heard that entire album other than that one song? There's some good songs on there, like "Hard Way", "Justify", "Let Me Go", "Sublime", "Fight Song", etc. There's also a song called "Relearn Love" that he put out exclusively for The Passion Of The Christ soundtrack.. His solo material, imo, is underrated af.
Also, it's entirely unfair to compare Scott's body of work to AB's body of work, because they're both different beasts. It's like comparing apples and cantaloupes. That being said, there's actually a little fun fact out there that AB's first album (ODR) was originally intended to be Creed's 4th before the first break up.
Anyway, the whole point of my original comment was that Rock Feed forgot to mention his successes as a solo artist and joining Art of Anarchy (that info is just as important), other than what he mentioned towards the end of the video about him recording new music in 2019. Creed is fantastic, one of my favorite bands and this is old news now! It’s 2020 and Scott has 6 years sobriety under his belt and is happy and healthy! Scott released a new album in 2019 called Space Between The Shadows the lead single is amazing it’s called Purpose For Pain and his new single is Survivor, he has another great song called Gone Too Soon, he has a tour set for this year The Survivor Tour but like everyone else because of the virus most will be postponed or re-scheduled! The album is fantastic! He reaches out to those with addiction or mental health issue whenever he can he uplifts at his shows and he couldn’t be more down to earth! All the members of Creed are all good with each other now and as of now are doing there who thing! But I wouldn’t turn down a new Creed album or tour! He’s been touring since 2016 and takes his sobriety very seriously, he is a husband and father first and has said everything in my life depends on my sobriety and without that nothing else works! He has changed his diet, he runs 5 to 8 miles a day he takes care of his voice and there is lots of video of his shows over the last 6 years and there is many interviews with him talking about his struggles openingly and honestly! So anyone can change once you reach you bottom and want help, if Scott can do it than so can you! I put up my last concert footage of Scott up you tube, it’s a full concert from Cincinnati, Oh at Bogart’s, September 2019! So this is now all behind Scott and I’am so proud of where he is and I’am happy he has his beautiful wife Jaclyn and his kids! I meet him over the last couple years and he’s such a great person so is his wife and his band mates and crew! He does his Creed music and his solo music I think many fan’s if you haven’t seen him in awhile would be very happy to go and see a live show, he still puts on amazing rock show!

Quality can come in many forms, e.g. authenticity, freshness or just general energy. Which doesn't mean that I like everything on the charts. In fact not much. But that's because it isn't to my taste.
Back to Creed: I think Scott Stapp has a great voice, whether you like it or not is another matter, and he was able to give the music a core, an identity of content.

@@muenchhausenmusic I'm sorry but identity or not, finding Myles Kennedy and dropping Stapp was the greatest move Tremonti, Marshall and Phillip's ever made. They were taken more seriously. Got better cred and were appreciated more by legit peers. The music is definitely more rich and depthful. Okay, as far as the downside, yeah they sold less, yes the Christian Rock angle worked better for them, yes and most unfortunately, most of the Creed fans did not follow the remaining members to the incarnation of Alter Bridge. I'm a rare exception. Still I think I would rather be respected in the industry and real rock fans then be a joke who writes songs mostly catering to women. Or fans of Christian Rock.

Brian Marshall is part of Alter Bridge as well. Don’t forget about him.

Creed was my all-time favorite band and I still love their music. I can’t wait for Scott’s new music to come out in 2019. I’m sure it was due to time constraints, but missing was anything about Scott’s two solo albums and his brief stint with Art of Anarchy, which didn’t turn out well.
