  • For Quest 2 and Quest 3 virtual reality users, this could be great news! For anyone wanting to have PC Quality VR graphics and performance without having any PC (or one that isn't very powerful) this give everyone hope! An "Avalanche" of news came over the last week or so about Meta's potential cloud-gaming for VR service, codenamed AVALANCHE. If you've dreamed of playing high-graphic-intensive games like Half-Life Alyx, Skyrim VR, Lone Echo, Stormlands, or any of the MANY great quality games out there that can't be played on standalone - you may be in luck. I'll share here what I know so far, and what's been floating around out there to make sense of it for all.

    I feel like I've been all alone talking about the future of VR and cloud gaming. There have been virtual pc services available for a few years now, and I've seen UA-cam videos of people using those services for PCVR. Whenever people talk about the need to increase processing power in standalone I always point to virtual PCs and cloud gaming as the answer. And once processing power is no longer a concern for standalone,the headsets will get smaller and lighter.

      Amen. There really is a great option here for fantastic visuals without being tied to only the mobile chip. The biggest questions I have are" How much will it cost the consumer for cloud gaming, and what will the latency be for the average user. Can't wait to see what is coming! I want more people to experience the power of higher-end VR!

    Even though cloud gaming has been through some bumpy developments lately (Stadia comes to mind), if any company is able to pull this off for better or worse, that is Meta. I am juat hopihn they might get back into developing PCVR games again with this, as I would love to see what Sanzaru Studios could do outside of stand-alone games, maybe an Asgard's Wrath 2 with upgraded graphics?

      Couldn't agree with you more! I'm predicting that PCVR will see a bit of a resurgence over the next few years, and we will start getting HIGH-END new experiences again for PCVR. I really do believe this. I don't think PCVR will overtake standalone for usage anytime soon (if ever), but I do believe more and more people are going to want to user their standalone headsets connected (wirelessly or wired) to a PC to get the best graphics they can and play things they couldn't play standalone. We shall see! And Cloud Gaming might be a start to get us there....

    Mini cloud gaming - a VR gaming hub in your town .

      How close you are to the hub will certainly make a difference, along with your internet speeds and reliability!

    Considering we can already play Xbox on quest 3 through the cloud I think with a bit more tweaking as most people now have VERY good speed fibre internet.

      Yeah, flatscreen gaming through those services in your headset are already working through those problems. VR, as we know, takes quite a bit more bandwidth, as a general rule, so but we are on the right track!

      In VR the slightest delay can f**k everything up tho - i don´t think the technology is far enough atm. You´d have the delay from Cloud to your PC and more delay from PC to Headset (at least if wireless)

    I tried shadow pc but the problem was, that it wasnt connected in my local network and therefore my net connection broke all 5 minutes sadly and i didnt found a solution yet.

      Yeah, I feel like that's going to be one of the major bottle-necks in the system - the difference of internet connection for each user based on hardware, where they are, ISP services, etc. But, I'll bet we'll get there - just a matter of how long it will take?

    Fantastic idea, was looking for something similar but tbh wont work until they fix the wifi issues on Oculus 3 disconnecting continuously

      Interesting! I haven't had that issue at all on my end! And, they still probably have latency issues and such to deal with depending on individual internet signals, but hopefully this option will become real sometime in the near future!

      I hope you don't have to wait long. I'm guessing they are still a good 6 months to a year away from having that out there, but who knows? With it appearing in versions of the software, they may be closer than we think! And you will LOVE Half-Life Alyx!

    Hola Bestmaster ;) German Bunny here: i want that friggin carrot!!! I'm really willing to invest into the cloud-gaming scheme if it saves me from buying a new PC that - remember - will be outdated six months later^^ oh, and btw. FIRST!! 😋

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  18 днів тому

      Love it - yeah, that would be a good option for people now wanting to invest in the hardware. Although, most computers won't be completely outdated that quickly, you should be able to get at least 3 - 5 years of use out of even a half-way decent gaming machine. But you're right - you can almost never have the most updated stuff, as new stuff is coming out all the time. :)

    PlutoSphere shutdown because Meta deliberately shut them down. It wasn't that they couldn't get it working. It was working! They had a customer base that was using it! Rather Meta shut them down because they were working on their own version, and they didn't want competition. Meta was able to simply make an arbitrary rule that outlawed what PlutoSphere was doing on Meta's platform. Boom. Competition gone.
    This was a case of a large company bullying a smaller company out of existence. UploadVR did a section on it when it happened. Very sad.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  18 днів тому

      I'd heard rumors of that, and I don't find that hard to believe at all. It is one of the things I really dislike about Meta overall - that they tend to find something that works, make it NOT work on their headsets, then set up their own version to do themselves. This doesn't surprise me. That's probably why they couldn't make it work financially - if it won't be allowed on the headsets that have sold the most! Ugggg.....

      I'm interested to see where it goes, and it seems so much of it will depend on the servers, and the quality of internet for each user.... hope they can make it work as an option for those who don't want to have a PC (or can't have one).

      @@jollyjulian If you ever heard of the full cloud gaming service that failed to capitalize market back in 2007-2010 like the Onlive and Stadia in 2020-2023.
      Cloud gaming is probably the hardest thing to attract gamers and paying subscription for the service can be more costy than buying an actual physical system that you can keep and in control of it.
      I'm a low budget person and I don't see myself paying a subscription for something that is a lot better to have a physical system in the house instead with consistent latency, less headaches with online multiplayer.
      Cloud gaming were never a good idea nor will it trick gamers into the platform knowing most of them knew the importance of being less reliance to internet as much as possible will make the experience more worth it

    • @TicTac-g7m
      @TicTac-g7m 17 днів тому +1

      It's not "overhyped" at all. If you have a great Internet connection but not a great PC, it definitely makes a substantial difference, and will keep getting better!
      Try it!

    • @SargonDragon
      @SargonDragon 16 днів тому

      There's hype, sure. But like AI, there's also a core of real substance beneath the hype. The biggest challenge for cloud gaming is latency and the speed of light. Internet connections have gotten strong enough to handle the bandwidth requirements, but there's no way around latency due to physical distance from cloud data centers. This will require spread out infrastructure to bring it close enough to the customer for the limitation of light speed to not be a significant contributor to the latency.
      That is challenging from the business standpoint but possible. And eventually we're going to see that play out. At that point, its performance should become about as good as steaming PCVR to Quest works now... at least for customers who live in or near popular cities.
