1. 24-48 hr fast when you're already stressed out
2. Exercising in the middle of the fast
3. Not breaking your fast with lean protein
4. Using prolonged fasting first for life style change (should build up to it by 16 hr fast 3 times a week)
5. Micronutrients deficiency
6. Drinking too much water (e.g. magnesium gets washed out), replenish with electrolytes
7. Fasting when bored

This is why I begin a prolonged fast on the weekend. It just doesn't work for me during the week. I find it works extremely well on the weekend, and I can take the time for long walks in the sun.
Thanks Cabbage Man. Good idea 💡
by yourself?
For me it works better at work when I’m distracted all day.
I just finished a 48 hour fast. I like to do it over the weekends as well.
Yeah lwanna to see how long you can walk under the sun when temp about 51+ degree and with carring 80 lbs weight 🤗💓💖💝💗✳️✳️✳️✳️🤗
Fantastic. Thank you Tom. Love your channel. Thanks for keeping me healthy!
Amazing talk. This is the best channel ever
Thanks Tom!!! You’ve really had an incredible positive impact on my life!
Great concise logical explanations!
Much appreciated!👍
Thanks for the video Thomas!
I had 49 hours in Hospital with no meal due to bowel surgery..i m glad that i was used to fasting up to 20 hours.....no Hunger.i liked it..
this was my favorite Thomas video because it covers a lot of science of both fat loss and fasting
I do a 36 hour fast every week. My doctor says he wishes all his patients had blood chemistry like mine.
I do 72 each week, I have no clue what my bloods are doing because apparently the nhs doesn’t treat anyone anymore, except the cold virus... but I feel incredible 👍🏻
@@roonilwazlib3089 That's super-healthy. How do you break the fast?
Your so awesome! I love your videos because of your educational videos my health has gotten so much better i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes early march since then i been following your videos my a1c has dropped from 9.0 to a 7.5 officially off insulan but still on oral ..is there anyway you can do a shopping haul for diabetics
Staying busy was something i learned right from the beginning when i started fasting. If you're bored and doesn't do shit it's hard. If you're busy enough you won't even feel it!
Drinking a lot of water was another thing i did, but if I'm busy that's good enough.
Great info. Thanks.

Fantastic information
Just finished a 95 hour fast and feel great. I've been on this prolonged fasting of a 24 hr fast every other day for 2 weeks now and am down 13 lbs. Yay!
Tom is passionate about fasting...dude knows how the world works! 👍
Awesome! Thanks!
I jumped into deciding I wanna do 7 days when I haven’t fasted in over a year and I have felt extremely drained and just sick overall. This explains a lot
Thomas,
After prolonged fast in omad how many grams proteins I should have it?
Thanks for replying
Good video.
Thom, you make me think 🤔👏👍 🙏
What about even longer fasts lasting 7 to 14 days? What supplements/electrolytes should one take? Would the kinds of supplements, the amounts and times to take them change as the fasting days go on? What exercises are recommended?
Haha awesome video ! I find when I fast over 24 hours when I eat food my body just soaks it up like a sponge and I feel amazing 🤩
That intro was hilarious! Actually lol'd
I'd be interested in a video on how to make the best out of a colonoscopy prep! They suggest a low fiber diet coming into the fasting period and then switch to "clear liquids" like filtered fruit juice, which left me hungry for two days the last time. What foods will decrease my appetite while I can still eat?
How can I clean out my colon and benefit from a 2-3 day fast, and will the prescribed "clean out" treatment break the fast (Dulcolax, Miralax and liquid magnesium citrate). Oh yeah, and how about the IV fluids they start you on when you arrive for your procedure? If at all possible, I'll be taking a protein shake to the hospital to break my fast after the procedure!
Does anyone know which fish oil does Thomas take/ recommend?
Is fasting recommended during menstrual cycle? Had a crazy trip doing keto and if during my cycle. Recommendations appreciated. Thanks for the helpful and informative videos.
Dr. Mindy Pelz has some great information on the best times to fast (and not fast) according to your cycle. She has said fasting during the first 10 days of your cycle is good.

Interesting tidbits to assist healthier Fasting.
Hi Thomas!
I have been fasting for one year now, on may 2020, I started IF, but the hunger went away and I started prolonged fasting, first for 3 days, then 5 days for a month, then 12 days, 12 days and 21 days, lost 30 kilos in 2 1/2 months , after refeed and some days later I gained 7 kilos. I started 2-3 days of fasting for 2 months, i was 143 kilos when I started, and I’m 6’2, I went down to 106 kilos, but I gained weight right away 7 kilos after I went back eating and 5 more in 6 months, even though I did keto and IF almost everyday, some months I go for 5 days or 10 days of prolonged fasting, I have been doing 18 hr IF and lifting weights right before my first meal and I have gain lots of muscle I asume due to the HGH in the 18 hr fast, but 2 months ago I’ve notice that I am gaining weight even though I’m doing 2 days water fast every week and eating around 2000 cal, because my stomach can take any more food, some times I do 1 meal and a bullet proof coffee, because it’s too much food.
I have done 170 days of water fast in 400 days in total, and taking my electrolytes and teas (ginger, turmeric, green and black teas, etc).
In this last 2 months I’ve gained 2 inches in my stomach, doing everything right, now I move to eating my 3 meals a day and trying to eat 3000 calories a day to see if I lowered my BMR of too much fasting, I hope I start seeing some results, I think my body is storing everything I eat in my belly as a distribution center.
Do you have any thoughts ?
I recently did a 10 day water fast and only lost 1.5 kilos after refeeding, that’s why I am concern ! And some weeks not eating for 2 days and gaining weight in those weeks!
Hope you can read this post and give me your feedback, thanks
I have lost my weight by using your info in your videos , thnx for sharing your knowledge 👍🏻 !!! I’m very greatfull !!!
Holy shit you're putting your body through a god damn rollercoaster
Good morning Mr Delauer. I am a huge fan and follower and love learning from studies as you find them and you explain them very well. I am looking for answers…
I have looked all over for evidence to help me, but I have yet to find a clear answer. I intermittently fast. I did a 72 hour in January and currently in the middle of a 7 day fast. With cell generation… could this or would this possibly undo the covid vaccine? I had 2 shots in 2021.
I’ve been doing 36-hour fasts. Question- is hemp seed oil something I could break my fast with?
Unrelated to video, but I wanted to say I used your promotion to purchase the Keto Mojo blood ketone and glucose meter. I've been on Keto for about a month now (dirty Keto, don't hate me...) and my first ketone test result was 3.3 mmol/L! I've taken some of your advice but I also Clean Keto is very hard to follow, especially when my wife refuses to switch to Keto. But anyway thanks for your great abundant info!

Take it from a fresh out of a 14 day fast,
Takes bare minimum a *month* a OMAD ;
nun a dat 16:8 / 18:6 2nd cheat meal a da day sorta stuff.
As far as exercisang during a prolonga,
Is 100 press ^'s / day 2 strenuous?
Drinking too much water is something I did not expect to see. Good thing I use trace minerals in my water, which includes magnesium!
So, the B12 and other additional supplements can be taken during the long fast?
Question: Should I be concerned about the glycine in magnesium glycinate or the taurine in magnesium taurinate if taken during a prolonged fast?
But Thomas I had a micronutrient defenency before I even started fasting. Now that I can control my meals in more healthy.
What about mag water from the Root Cause Protocol with Morley Robbins?
What about fasting to heal the *medical* condition of chronic stress, where you become easily stressed all the time due to things like good bacteria, vitamin or mineral deficiencies etc. in the body? Wouldn't prolonged fasting benefit that?
I am in my leaning into my 72 hrs now whats your take on taking creatine during a fast ?
January I started into fasting. So far this year I've lost 37 lbs. I start at 6pm till about noon to 1:00.. I do have black coffee at 6in morning. Nothing to eat till noonish. I then eat sardines. Then stir fry seafood at 5pm. You talk about acv and some of the spices. I think I can do more. Any suggestions. Forgot to tell. I'm 69 . Couple year ago I weighed 430. I now weigh 312.
Prolonged fasting is 72 hours? Hmm.. I'm on day 6 of a 30 day fast....
I did it so will you. I recommend taking electrolyes and multivitamin as taking on salt is abit harsh in my casr
@@Raecrisos my longest has been 16 days.. And I'm experimenting with mineral water.. If I start feeling bad.. I'll start taking salt and no salt like my previous fasts.. What makes it harder for me is the fact that I'm type 1 diabetic.. So I also have to do my pancreas job.. But I'll get through it..
@@danielgrohl6971 how can you possibly go into DKA when you are making insulin? Are you sure you're not type 1? Have you done a c peptide test? If so what was the number? If not.. Why not?
More importantly... Why are you eating carbs? If you know not eating them helps you?
what is your reason for 30 days fast?
@@genadimaxi5287 experiment.. Trying to wake up my brain.. And to prove to everyone that a type 1 diabetic can do it too..without medical supervision..
Dr Peter Attia advocates HIIT Cardio on 1st day of prolonged fasting to deplete glucose & glycogen stored in muscles & liver... then light strength training to maintain muscle mass. By increasing IFG1 & stimulating MTOR in the muscles, the amount of catabolism of muscle due to fasting is greatly decreased.
Can you adresss vomitting on a 48hr fast?
Good, or bad?
I can see the body trying to get rid of all the toxins its trying to get in Autopathy.
But I started to really deteriorate after 48hrs.
No idea if you check or read your comments. But I have been watching your video's off and on and noticed that when you talk about fasting it's usually shorter style fasts. 24-72ish hours(like this video) Would you ever consider doing a video on people who do actually do a super long fast, 30-40days? Im not asking if you recommend this type of fasting, but maybe the video could deal with what happens to the body of those who do end up fasting for a super long time? UA-cam has people that do in fact do these super long fasts irregardless of wether people think they are safe or not.
Is fasting good when healing from injuries or surgery?
Just saw a study where Vit C blocks cortisol. Use that before working out fasted?
Interesting 🤔
Nice, started a 48 hour fast, might try some lemon water for my workouts
@@PaulAllen8.30 Indeed, I do 2000mg of C before I train, the pump is incredible. And thats with no carbs in the system.
Don't take vitamin C around working out. There are MANY studies showing that it BLOCKS the benefits of the exercise, because you NEED the metabolic stress and ROS to act as second messangers to get the benefits
I am always stressed out...lol but fasting centers me so, to be honest, I hear this but I know if I just power through the first week of alternate day fasting (my sweet spot is 36 hrs, then 2MAD, then rinse repeat), even when I am stressed, my stress levels reduce ALOT after I adapt to my fasting schedule. Anxiety and stress are often more FOOD-related, and often because of insulin response. Stop the crazy blood sugar spikes and adapt and all of sudden your stress reduces and you begin to lose fat AND not feel like a crazy person. For me, I don't bother getting worried about the body effects of fasting with the first few weeks because it's going to suck no matter what, that is part of what you are trying to get your body to overcome. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Also if you DON"T fast what is your OTHER option for dealing with stress? YEP - you eat like a pig AND/OR workout to the point you drain your adrenal function. SO for me the better choice is fasting.
I'm the same way. Try Wim Hof breathing for stress
Any opinion om +24 hours fast while healing the gut?
Can it cause problems?:)
But if you eat when stressed isn't it worse than fasting? Isn't that called "stress eating"??
Just ruptured my Achilles and strained my calf muscle jumping rope.. trying hard to stay off my feet. Is fasting recommended while nursing an injury?
i wondered this same thing when i tore a ligament but got no answer. all i kept learning about was intermittent fasting for minor injuries, not major like tendon ruptures. i took it upon myself to 5-day fast anyway during the first or second week of the tear and didnt experience any particular negative. it healed well almost 6 months later. there is just tightness/pain in the surrounding area. not sure what effect fasting had on it, but hopefully you get useful info. im curious what it could be.
isnt it just maddening when, of all things that could cripple you for months, its a mundane non-event routine like jump rope?
@@cherryl225 Hey! i just wanted say I appreciated you taking the time and giving me your input. I would've responded sooner but it literally happened just a few days earlier and i was still in shock. Im absolutely continuing to fast as if nothings changed.. just laying off the walking. Again thank you.
I really struggle with the information in this video because I am also an emotional eater. However, when things at work are really stressful I feel like I need to break my fast sooner because my cortisol levels get so high I can’t really function. But then I feel bad, because I am giving into emotional eating. I should probably just take electrolytes when I feel like that.
What is the best way to cure colorectal cancer😢 I need your help please 😭🙏🏻
Hi I'm on day 25 of my fast. I just jumped into it. Did I screw up? And if so what do I do so that I didn't waste all those days. HELP.
More about Heart Rate Variability....please.
How much water would you recommend drinking during a daily fast?
Good question. He just said "don't drink too much". Yeah...thanks
Trying to understand all this stresses me out. 😬
Tell me why the last tip REALLY helped me the most LOOOOOOOOOOL.
Ive been fat adapted for months now so fasting is no sweat but man boredom is killer for it none the less... I don't have much to do on weekends away from work and wanting to watch shows online makes me psychologically crave food lol
In another video you said we better fast when we’re stressed out! I guess you should decrease quantity and increase quality.
how is apple watch for hrv?
For the protein after a fast, is bone broth ok?
Bone broth first, the lean protein like 30-40 minutes after. Helps adjusting the gut.
@@dennisolsen4122 oh wow. Ok, thank you Dennis!
But if you say to start on a fast 16 hr 3 times a week... I plan on starting on doing the 18:6 or 20:4 so wont I already be doing a "fast" then?
Quick question, how many days a week should I do intermittent fasting such as a 20/4 split? Also, is it good to do a keto diet while doing intermittent fasting?
All his keto meal plans have either 24 hour alternate day fasting or 16/8 every other day fasting
I'd say that depends on your goals, your health and what feels comfortable for you. Keto and IF I a great combination though 👍
Everyday. And yes :)
Oh! If you haven't watched Dr. Berg, go do that. 😉

21 day fast? Curious to know how you feel... After 5 days, I start to feel really weird, light headed, and blah.
Any update friend, very interested
i ate a bunch of carbs on my firt day of breaking a 72hr fast, now i feel a weird feelling in my middle upper chest, nearly reaching my front neck. i am scared. it's been a week and it does not go away. what do i do? help please
I'm clipping that intro soundbite and using it as a ringtone for my bae
So if your in an industry that’s going through a lot of changes & you’re under stress and you don’t get 2 consecutive days off when do you start a fast
My longest fast so far has been three days and I've found day two is the hardest so I would have that as my day off. I always day one when I'm at work for the distractions. If you're under lots of stress maybe the shorter fasts would be better.
Don't you recommend fasting on days your cortisol is already spiked??
Cortisol stores fat or something doesn't it?
Fasting and working yes, but not office work, it has to be physical, not much brain used. At least for me, I cannot put myself over 20/4 without switching my mind to thinking about food constantly. Working outside, doing some project - no problem, I could do it all day, feel hungry, but make it easily.
I'm thinking about doing a 3 day long water fast. Any tips?
don't eat
Electrolyte supplement without carbs or calories
Put salt in your water and take electrolytes if you can't get mineral water. Also take some vitamins if you don't plan on having tea and coffee during the fast

What do you think about eating a single scrambled egg, to break a fast?
oh man, i hope he can answer this question
(i always break my fast with one boiled egg)
I had a terrible reaction in my gut and spent most of the afternoon in the bathroom. Bad idea
I broke my 24 hr fast and now I'm agitated and irritable.
Also my blood pressure is elevated.

@@jamescollins9483I did have some before just before I broke the fast and had a bit with my lean protein.
Doesn't salt increase blood pressure?
I was wondering if the salt was to blame 🤔
And now you till me!
I'm kind of like Mark Ruffalo's hulk: "I'm always stressed out." Seriously though, I personally may combine Wim Hof breathing with a long fast. If you haven't tried it, it can be extremely relaxing. I'm as type A as it gets and Wim works for me, that and long walks (also a great fat burner)
Can somebody tell me about sodium intake if I drink 6 liters of water daily?
You Going to mess up your electrolyte that’s for sure happened to me
You need to intake sodium because your body will expel it and other minerals.
@@mutarrsrtrawally6753 thanks for answer! What do you do to correct that?
@@CarbageMan thanks for answer. How much sodium i must to intake? I workout in the gym 6 times a week, i have 225 pounds and i drink 6 liters of water daily, my pottasium intake is 4.7 grams daily. Anyone ever have a skin reaction during a fast? I did my first 36+ hour fast and around 30 hours my cheeks got super hot and red and got a slight rash on them. I went to bed and the next morning it was gone.
I’ve heard of this happening
Im on day 7, in 3 Days i break my fast.
Will i eat lean dry empty protein? naaaah
Will i eat nutrient Dense foods that will restore my reserves, give me nutrients that will improove my Fat Burning, muscle Building, over all health? HECK YEAH
gonna have a great feast like always.
I do always 3-5 day fast and then have a OMAD Keto meal when breaking it, sometimes i throw in a 7-10 Day fast.
Thats how one can keep going, how you stay motivated, energized. Not overcomplicating things, ristricting and stress yourself when breaking the fast and dont get enough in or the right things.
Start with gras fed Burgers or pasture raised eggs, huge salad containing many awesome but low fodmaps&oxalate&phytic acid veggies with MCT and unfiltered olive oil with sheeps cheese, followed by many other delicous nutrient dense foods
then rest&digest
Breaking my fast in this manner is exactly what screwed my gut up for the last week since a 72 hour fast! Good for you that you can gorge after a long fast! For myself, I have to take it slow. Bone broth with an egg and wait a couple hours till a moderate meal.
2:00 why am I getting a Bon**

So you’re saying we should skip turkey leg at Disney land☠️
The turkey says yes, skip it 🦃
what if you've got afib? Hearts always erratic.
Have you been diagnosed with Afib? If so, I think it’s considered to be dangerous for prolonged fasting. Dr. Joel Furhrman wrote the best book on fasting I’ve ever read. (I have at least 15- 20 books on fasting). He goes into detail in laymens terms, even though he’s a medical doctor turned Naturopath doctor, and has a whole section on heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases as it relates to water fasting. I can’t think of the title. If you’re interested, check Amazon. That’s where I got my book from several years ago. Also, if you have not been actually diagnosed, certain things like dehydration , anemia and acidosis can mimic heart arrhythmia issues. Hope this helps. Also, I hope Thomas answers your question.🙂
So don’t fast when you’re stressed, don’t fast when you’re bored, don’t drink too much water, don’t exercise in the middle of your fast, might as well not fast. Got it
So many different contradicting videos on this channel lol 😅🤦🏾♂️😅🤦🏾♂️
There’s not anything contradicting in this video. I think you have to look at context. Intermittent fasting is different from a prolonged fast
Can't wait to get the "English" version of this video...!
