I just got chewed out yesterday on an exercise UA-cam channel by another UA-cam blogger for fasting 4 days. I was told I need to eat at least twice daily for health so I'll not comment on fasting. I was told I was stupid. I didn't have the heart to tell him/her I was on day 3 of a fast, just finished my 3 mile run, lost 52 pounds in 7 months and off all 4 prescription medications since I started intermittent and prolonged fasting. If only I was as smart as other people.

So long as you keep exercising during your fast you'll never have the issue of weight loss slowing down. If u have fat to lose, and you keep expending energy, your body will keep preserving muscle and burning fat. If you're ever feeling low on energy just drink more snake juice ( it's salt/electrolyte water. google the recipe). Doing semi-regular 4-day fasts ain't gonna hurt anything. The person who threw a fit is ignorant of what it takes to be healthy. Obviously, re-feeding is important but the goal is balance. Eating every day WILL kill you eventually.
Key to immortality = Fasting/Exercise/Saunas/Ice Baths or starvation stress, physical stress, heat stress, and cold stress. It's those different types of stress that activates all the beneficial longevity mechanisms in the body. Stress leads to strength!

Fasting didn’t do the trick to make you lose weight. Not eating as much was what did it. If you ate 3 smaller meals throughout the day it would do the exact same thing but also might have helped keep more muscle on you

    3. I’m 64 & in good health.

      1. On alternate days, I allow a 12 hour feeding period.
      2. On those days, I eat 80% healthy, 20% ad libitum.
      3. Monday night, at an REI meeting, I ate 5 slices of greasy pizza.
      4. 36 hours later, my scale says I’ve lost 2 pounds.
      5. So while my accumulated fast/feed hours are roughly 80/20, during that 20% I eat well.
      6. This regimen works better for me than “dieting”.
      7. And remember, at least 38% of those fasting hours, I’m sleeping! 😴

I haven't stopped all the spices but I've cut down the "doses" I've also increased garlic and ginger and decreased tumeric. (I mix them all together in a tupperware to save time opening each packet).Obviously do your own research. Hope this helps.

I have been watching your videos for over a year. I started IF June 2021, and in August 2021, my hubby got cancer..... stomach cancer! He had his entire stomach removed. I stayed strong and continued my own journey, through his chemo & adjusting to our new lifestyle in 2022. I'm down 114, and still have a LOT to go. But I'm STUCK! I tried your reset break at the end of 2022 and gained some weight. At the new year, I started back & dropped the increase. But I can't get past that one number. I'm hanging working 3-5 pounds of it and the more I stress, the more I'm increasing cortisol and the more it's keeping me where I am.
I'm managing with hubby having to eat 8-12 times a day and me fasting, or ADF, and family get togethers, etc. But I just can't get the scale moving again. I'm at the end of my rope and don't know what to do!

This has done WONDERS FOR ME!! I only do fasts on weekends I know I can take my last day of my fast completely off work so I can fully rest the last day. 🙏 I always lift weights on day 1 and day 2 of my fast, and I still walk 3-4 miles or cycle 7-10 miles every day. I always use quality sea salt 🧂 in my water when I fast🙏. I think the refeed week in my month is CRUCIAL to maintaining and being able to not only maintain, but GET stronger. 💪

I’m curious to know, since grehlin/hunger is what initiates autophagy, if this still occurs to the same level in people that fast while on medications like Ozempic or Mounjaro? As their hunger is massively reduced, albeit through stimulation of other hormones GLP1 and GIP, would this not have an impact on the levels of grehlin released?

I’ve been trying some different dietary patterns to help bring down my blood sugar, even though I am not technically overweight. It has been way more frustrating than losing the first 45 pounds were. I didn’t really have to go to extremes, in my opinion, at all. Although I do remember that sometimes on weekends because I would eat richer food, I would be less hungry, and so I would sometimes skip a meal, not as punishment, but because, I had gotten used to eating when I had an appetite. I did that on three meals a day with no sweets, and all the food on one plate, five days a week. I had extras on weekends, which it first were over the top, but eventually, I changed appetite didn’t want to accommodate that kind of over eating anymore. I started all that in January 2010. I think I would have to suffer some kind of brain injury to ever go back to the kind of over eating I did. But hearing that you took some time to game is making me wonder because I have to eat so little in order to get it my fat stores that it sounds almost daunting. And yes, I do have a lot of respect now for people who’ve had to slog along with a few of the most reinforcing rewards. That’s why when I was losing weight, the scale was never what I allowed myself to put too much emphasis on. It was more enjoying the food I had, and being so happy that I wasn’t binging anymore.

You need to prepare for fasts by first dropping your carbs 9:28.
If you drop your carbs at least the day before starting a fast, focusing on eating foods that are primarily protein/fat based, you won't be spiking your blood sugar, so you won't be triggering your hunger hormones. If your hunger hormones aren't spiked, you'll find you can easily fast since you don't have food cravings caused by the blood sugar/insulin spikes that carbs cause.
If you keep eating carbs, it will make it extremely difficult to fast, since you will continue to spike your blood sugar, then when it drops, you start feeling the effects of hunger as your body insists on telling you it needs to have it's blood sugar level raised again, since you're trained it to be a "sugar burner".
Choose your foods a day or two before you fast (look up "list of keto foods"), to ensure they are low/no carb, and you'll find that ravenous appetite that keeps nagging at you will go away.
It's not because of what you weight that you've got that appetite, it's because of what you've been eating. Make a conscious effort to eliminate carbs, keep them below 20g a day (5g is even better), and you'll find you're appetite no longer controls you, and you'll be able to fast easily.
It's the carbs that are getting you in trouble, not the increased muscle mass.

Man, I get so much out of your videos, but this one has been exceptionally useful to me. I started doing one meal a day about 15 years ago and at first it was great and then I got to the point where I'd actually forget to eat for 2 days if I was busy working on a project that I was really interested in. Now I've changed a lot about how I fast since then, but the huge takeaway for me here is that when I got to the point where I never felt hungry even fasting for 48+ hours straight, it wasn't necessarily a good thing and if anything a sign to kick back into time restricted eating for a while, then reset my hunger response and get back to fasting. Brilliant stuff, thanks! Also, as someone that's been using a near-infrared sauna for well over a decade, I always avoided going in the sauna during fasts because I'd often get dizzy afterward. I'm going to give it another shot because I didn't add electrolytes (minerals) to my water and I think that's why I got dizzy in the sauna. Now that I use electrolytes, I think it should do away with that problem.

@@SharkFishSF I'm 44 now, but no one would ever guess it. Most people assume I'm 30-something. I think fasting a lot for 15+ years has definitely played a big part in that. As for one meal a day, I do it sometimes when I'm in the mood to just eat a bunch or only have time to eat once for the day, but mostly I don't do it anymore. It's great for days where you have to travel but don't feel like doing a full 24 hour fast.
I've learned more and more about health and fitness and fasting over the years, and it seems that for me personally at least my hormones start to get out of balance if I do one meal a day too much. I just eat everything within 3-5 hours now and fast the rest of the day. I often do 1-3 day water fasts (about every 7-15 days I'll do a water fast, but I don't set an amount of time--I just wait until my body says it's time to be done and stop the next day) and once every season I'll do a dry fast or a longer water fast.
As we age, it's very important to maintain muscle mass, so I hope you keep up with everything you're doing so you don't have to get back into it like a lot of people do in their 40s, 50s, etc. Just make it a lifestyle and stick with it and you'll always be biologically younger than your years, haha
