I remember this scene and it was great. In that an militarily inexperienced business CEO is made too look like an idiot by an experienced admiral… only to flip the situation with the interpretation any non navy man would. And the consequences of that. It’s a masterful way of how opinions can be forced in any situation, business or war
I remember watching it in the cinema thinking “you idiot McNamara” then realising I was the idiot. Great scene

Perfect dramatization of McNamara. He was a numbers guru. Using analytics WAY before they became popular. Was part of the whiz kids - they didn't know anything about cars, but reshaped Ford Motor Co...didn't know anything about naval tactics, but knew the "language" of the blockade. Kennedy recognized very smart guys, that's why he surrounded himself with them

    • @jeromenorris5045

No entirely correct, you analysis of McNamara's pedigree translating into effective governmental service. Yes, JFK's administration comprised both 'eggheads' like McNamara, and 'brass tax', "gung-ho" military men to weigh the contrasts between the two and hence render his own decisions, based on the best advice. But McNamara, for his part is historically considered an inept failure as Secretary of Defense. He had no practical experience and 'fudged' the numbers regarding Vietnam causalities. Worst of all, his dogmatic determination to continue in this fashion, both under JFK and Johnson only served to prolong a war that they United States could not win...and he knew it! Sorry, Hollywood depictions of historical figures are largely historically inaccurate!

McNamara was a former commissioned officer in the USAF. His military experience served him well in this situation, as did some of the other cabinet members. I was born in 1953 and I watched this unfold while at my American relatives house in Bath, Maine on their black and white TV. My uncle Stan left the U.S. Army the year before and he was worried sick over this. We were all wondering if we were going to live through this, or be a statistic in the afterlife.

In actuality, the first ship to approach the blockade was the Bucharest, a Soviet ship named after the Romanian capital.
When the Romanian communist leaders found out that the Soviets put missiles in Cuba and used a ship called Bucharest to breach the blockade they were deeply enraged.
This fury of the Romanian politbureau was made possible because of an incident involving the Romanian communist leaders flying over China in a soviet plane just a few days before the Cuban crisis began. The Romanians were convinced that the Soviets were out to eliminate them.
This was a turning point in Romanian-Soviet relations. After 1962 the Romanians had a very anti-soviet stance even though they were deeply communistic.

Robert McNamara, who (at least during this crisis) stopped the U.S. from launching into a nuclear holocaust, was the chief architect of the Vietnam War. One of Dan Carlin's podcast he was talking about the U.S. nuclear war plans in the 80s & 90s. These guys are like computers, very task oriented. If they're given 1000s nukes and told to put bombs on target, they will put bombs on target. All 1000 are allocated so if a city has to get hit 10 times, it gets hit 10 times. That kind of thinking is nuts to me.

    @marklipson Рік тому

I was riveted by this scene the first time I saw it and its effect remains undiminished...That concept of the Cuban missile crisis, blockade, and military and diplomatic action evolving a "new language" blew my mind... For me, it nailed the idea of how crucial it is for our leaders to try to develop a multidimensional perspective and understanding of important situations, especially at hair-trigger moments in history like this. Linear thinking and simple, direct action/reaction have their place but -- as with all things -- in the wrong context, they can lead to extreme and dangerous, irreversible consequences.
Before nuclear weapons, it may well have been possible to strong-arm a bully into submission with manageable risk (notice I didn't say who the bully was here?)...That kind of schoolyard tactic among superpowers evaporated with the advent of nuclear weapons and the Damocles sword of Armageddon. The scale of potential consequences utterly dwarfs anything that might be gained from "big stick" threats and militaristic swagger.
The people who believe that the Russian placement of nukes in Belarus is "all bark, no bite" and is merely chest-puffing bluster might do well to consider this.

It was called Vietnam. Just a little thing. 58,000 American dead, hundreds of thousands wounded. That blunder.

Not just that but 2 million Asian lives lost, 2500 still MIA some of whom were known to be taken prisoner and never came home such as Ward Dodge, Charles E Shelton and David Hrdlicka but others who were shot down and successfully ejected from their planes but were killed by irate villagers and the militia who captured them. The PAVN soldiers and militia were supposed to protect downed pilots from harm but sometimes they killed them in cold blood or if the pilots tried to escape.

Wrong Bob McNamara displays his ignorance of Naval customs going back for hundreds of years.
"Firing across the bow" is understood by ALL sailors (miitary and civilian) to mean "halt and heave to."
And for McNamara to assume that Kennedy, a former Navy officer, to not understand these procedures to the same extent that he himself didn't, well... McNamara was the man in charge of the Edsal project... and hundreds of World Monetary Fund loans that went belly up. That man was a King Midas in reverse ... everything he had control of, he turned into a stinking pile of shit.

Naval customs of western powers, sure. Khrushchev never served in the Navy and the goobers manning the weapons in Cuba probably didn't either. When nuclear war is on the line, you play it safe.
The important thing is that Bob McNamara probably never gave this speech. This was likely written by the screenwriters and they just chose McNamara as their voice for the scene.

it is possible to brilliant in one moment in history, and totally inept in another. Look at Winston Churchill and his instincts toward Gandhi/India, as compared to Churchill's attitude toward Hitler/Nazi Germany.

Thankfully, there were reasonable people on the Soviet side, too. We know of at least a few officers who chose to not launch, even when under pressure from their peers and with their computers falsely telling them that the U.S. had launched on them and that they needed to strike back immediately. I guess that it would take a very cold heart to issue the order to launch ICBMs, to enter the codes or to press that button. I doubt that I would be able to do it, even in retaliation. I don't know about Trump. Being hard on immigrants or talking tough against China is one thing, but starting a nuclear holocaust that would kill billions and cast humanity back to the Middle Ages is something else.

They family members of the murdered sailors were devastated when they learned that their loved ones might have been saved for want of "courage" in Washington.
