Mark Harrison True, but nobody knew that for sure at the time. A Russian sub came horrifically close to launching its nukes during the crisis. The Kremlin gave subs the authority to launch if they decided they should. This sub had zero contact with anyone and assumed WW3 broke out when they were getting depth charges dropped on them. 3 officers had to agree to launch. One refused (Vasilj Arkopov). He literally saved the world. It was so intense that a fist fight almost broke out. Amazing story.

True. These 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis was probably one of the scariest moments in US history. No one knew what was gonna happen and the missiles could've launch at any given moment.

***** Not really. The Cold war was a war between Communism and Capitalism. Technically, it was between Vietnam, Cuba, Guatemala (Before the CIA made the coup), and Russia against the United States and their small puppet states.

+ThePhoxProject Chitturi Abhinav is correct regarding this specific incident. The Cold War was not necessarily between socioeconomic systems but the establishment of footholds by superpower Western bloc America and Eastern bloc Russia. BTW, the term, "Cold War" was coined by George Orwell in his October 19th, 1945 essay, "You And The Atomic Bomb."

For the doubters ( and at one time I was one of them), John F. Kennedy proved hIs true ability as President. He was being encouraged by military leaders to use this situation to invade Cuba. There is little doubt now this would have launched us into war, and very possibly, nuclear conflict. Patiently, Kennedy carefully deliberated the results of such a precipitous action. Instead he initiated an embargo, giving the Soviet Union a chance to respectfully withdraw. In my opinion, he earned his greatness as President with this momentous decision.

@@markharrison2544 That is true but this exchange forced them to look at the situation from the position of the other instead of just their own. Not many leaders can do that and Kennedy was one such leader. Yes, I believe the Soviet Union was protecting a client state. I also believe that No American government could permit the missiles to remain if they wanted to maintain their legitimacy. But you have to look beyond and to the end game. Anyone can start a war. Not many can avoid one when it comes so close.

My mom was feeding my sister while sitting on the couch and my dad & great grandma were transfixed on every word JFK uttered. I stood in the doorway of my bedroom unnoticed for almost the entire broadcast until my mom noticed me. I was shaking…scared to death that we’d all die that night. That night, with my sisters cradle in their bedroom, I slept between my mom & dad. The next morning…a Tuesday…I was kept home from kindergarten. To this day I cannot hear a CD Siren for any reason without reliving that 24 hours. The world was fortunate those 13 days… on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The fault lies in your own arguments, Comrade Samets: JFK tried to withdraw our Turkish missiles, but our State and Defence Depts. dithered (which they're good at, w/o prompting), while Moscow condoned shooting Berliners crossing that damned Wall.
The Presidium made mistakes during Kennedy's administration till they realised that we'd never 'swap' West Berlin, even for a non-nuclear Cuba. The Crisis matured both sides, but we can thank JFK for keeping our hotheads from invading Cuba again.

JFK was a great man ,undoubtedly the last independent president of USA. It's a shame that nowadays he is associated with the assassination more than his actions... For instance-in related videos- "A nation remembers- Nov 23 1963" . Let's rather mention his energy , wisdom and the fact that he was one of two presidents who started their own currency (non-federal-after 1913). The other was Lincoln (who was also assassinated) .This is not a coincidence. They both were representing the people and their rights ,which didn't suit the bankers' elite and the secret societies. Now,50 years after 1963 ,USA is no longer a free country. Freedom is only artificial.
    Thanks for the great video!

The distinction is blurry, but I would say that a defensive weapon is one designed to counter other weapons. For example, surface-to-air missiles, anti-tank rockets, things like that. Of course, most if not all weapons can be used offensively or defensively, depending on the user's intentions.

It's so sad to know that this has happened in our history. But at least I am learning about this in school. I know I didn't live to actually see this announcement, but I feel like I did! I don't like learning about war, or the civil rights movement, or things like that. But it is something I can say to my future children and grandchildren. I hope nothing this horrible could happen in this time line. God bless us all.

Imagine where we'd all be now if he weren't brutally murdered. He may have had his personal demons, but we all do.
This was a real man that had the greatest of intentions for not only his country, but humanity itself. At such a young age, with not too much experience, he saved the world. And was also taken away too soon.
I believe that if he was able to continue to influence the world throughout the rest of his life, however long that would've been, we could've avoided so many other problems and be in a better place now.
Even as a Nova Scotian, a King's Loyalist, I salute you Mr. Kennedy. May you rest in peace.

If a different president was elected instead on JFK on 1960, how bad of a condition would we Americans be in? What would Nixon do in a situation like this?

    • @jakemarsing2615
      @jakemarsing2615 9 років тому +14

Nixon would have listened to Gen. LeMay and the rest of the hawks in the cabinet who wanted an air strike. They didn't understand that there aren't winners in nuclear war. Kennedy did. He used his experience in the South Pacific, and his lessons from the Bay of Pigs in this situation. His caution saved the world.

I was 5 years old at the time, living in England. My Dad was in the RAF Bombers, the Valient. He had a shotgun, which was kept in the house at the time. As the crisis heated up he was in his Aircraft with atomic bombs in England waiting for the word to go. He told my Mum if she hears the Squadron take off, we lived near the base, she was to shoot me and my Sister, then herself.
