Officially the Cuba Missile crisis lasted 35 days: RF-8 Crusader "The Eyes of the Fleet" were used to make low level Recce photographs while the U2 Angels cruised above 20 Km. October 23, 1962 the incident involving Cmdr William Ecker and Lt Bruce Wilhelmy is well-known as both pilots were awarded the DFC - Distinguished Flying Cross (USA). Another incident involving RF-8 Crusader pilots LtCdmr Tad Riley & Capt Fred Carolan encountering a Mig 21-F was also well-documented. In addition the USAF also used photo-reconnaisance RF-101 Voodoos over Cuba.
Hey man. I was looking for information about this scene. Do you know if they were really shot at and then lied to their commandor about it? I couldn't find anything confirming that. Do you know where can I find it?
it was ...but it wasnt O'Donnell who talked to the commanders and front line pilots..it was someone else from the White House staff on Kennedy's orders (i guess they wanted to use Costner since they were paying for him)
The Cubans and the Soviets (whom the former invited) firing on intruders in the Cuban airspace would have been a very poor casus belli and everyone in the Pentagon knew it. They later shot down a U2 and killed its pilot - and it didn't cause a war. Dramatic license in a movie...
A very good movie, but one thing I don't understand is that the 2 F8s were fired upon during the recon mission over Cuba, and Commander Ekcer had to speak to General Lemay and joint Chiefs, wouldn't the AA fire have shown up on the film? Any suggestions anyone?
@@jimbobeire Guess not, but it stands to reason that if you want a fighter jockey ASAP in Washington, you give him a fast plane - after all, his job is to fly fast.
criminaly underrated movie
Very clever. He didn't answer the question.
The actor playing the pilot is the son of Peter Lawford. Lawford was JFKs brother in law so this guy was JFKs real life nephew
And his wingman is Kenny O'Donnell's grandson. O'Donnel is the character Kevin Costner played.
3:57 1st military man in the background:"What's the matter, do you hear something?"
3:59 2nd military man:"I don't know, I can't identify it."
12.7mm. If they were 20mm he would not have a wing left.
@zzodr Let alone 40mm, LMAO...
Thanks General
My thoughts exactly

They weren't looking for a casus belli to go to war with the siviet Union . They wanted an excuse to invade cuba.
Honey u dont know what shit is 😂.

possibly, yes, however if the pilot reports no fire, it may well be overlooked
whyd he bring his helmet all that way lol
Ya. That is so funny. Like carrying in his motorcycle helmet.
Because he flew to the meeting himself, and probably had orders to to that as fast as possible.
@@deildegast He didn't fly the same plane with the 'birdstrike' damage, I presume...

@@deildegast yup, no sitting in the back of a cargo plane and keeping the brass waiting.
