You guys rock, almost a perfect boat and was gotten a lot of negative feedback the possibility of leaks, now this should take care of that... Ill definitely put it to the test
Hobie should be providing a similar kit like this to other models that have the same issues and not just the new 2019 models. It is well known and documented through videos that this is an ongoing issue with older models as well and not just the Outback models.I own a 2018 Outback and have the same issue with water coming in through the same cover/hatch.
Thanks for the feedback Arturo, feel free to email us with your info and we can help find a solution to get your hatch to seal correctly. info@hobiecat.com
I solved the same issue on my Pro Angler by adding a gasket to the liner. If you don’t mind spending some money, you can buy the 2019 outback hatch liner 72020109 and the top molded (not the side molded) trim loc hatch seal from ACK. Put the seal all around the edge of the liner (no glue needed). That will keep the lid higher so it can rest over the liner’s gasket. It worked with my PA, in theory, it could work with the outback.
I like the template. That would have been good to have when I installed a gasket to my PA 14 hatch lid. My gasket ended up about 1" short so I had a 1" gap in the gasket.
Omg! PEOPLE please don't be fooled into believing this is suitable fix for this total engineering blunder! Gasket on gasket!! The hatch needs to apply evenly destributed pressure for the seal to work. Doubling the gasket thickness throws it all off. At least remove the existing gasket and replace with a larger one. Did you hear him say we didn't have to provide a templet! Wtf! 3000 grand! They should come to your house and fix it AND buy you dinner!
DON"T FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS! The template is too small. I went back to my dealer to learn Hobie is supplying new Outback 2019's with this same upper gasket, but the gasket follows a different pattern [almost runs the entire 45 degree "groove"]. So when the hatch is down the upper gasket hugs the outside of the lower gasket. They're not even following their own directions... I'm with Far East Angler. Don't tell me "If you installed it correctly in the right position..." SHOW ME IT WORKS! Hobie, this is my first boat... this is also my first impression. Also, where's my free hat for all this trouble?
Any word on when the bow hatch buckets be available? Will the seal upgrade interfere with that? Although I haven't had any issues with mine leaking- thanks for making it right for those that do have leaks.
Matt, we are still working on the front hatch liner. We do not have an eta on when it will be available and we want to make sure it works correctly before releasing it.
This is unreal for Hobie! For what people have paid for their BRAND NEW 2019 Outback the least Hobie could do is simply send it’s customers a new lid that already has the gasket appropriately installed. One very small mistake and water is still leaking in. This issue in my mind is a manufacturing flaw that Hobie needs to own up to.
Hi Gregory, it's a much more complicated job to remove and add a new hatch lid with much larger chances for mistakes. There is a decent amount of wiggle room with this install since the gasket is pretty wide. If someone messes up the install we'd be happy to send them another kit at no charge.
Hobie: It is an equally “complicated job” for the average person to get this fix right. No excuses! You profit greatly from those of us who buy your products (I’m a PA-14 owner to the tune of over 4K). I’ve owned two of your kayaks and think highly of both your products and customer support, but I’ve never seen anything like this. Sorry, but your response doesn’t change my opinion. Make it right!
I have to agree it's design flaw in the hatch y'all can make one better and the fact that you used bungee cords to hold it down it's pretty cheap the bungee cords will normally rot in time with sun exposure and start to leak again couldn't you just add 1 compression lever I even heard of people getting the latches for like the Yeti coolers and installing them on the old Outbacks I hope to be an owner of a new one soon hopefully they fix all these problems
Rather B Fishing i have a video with links to the parts and videos of before and after testing with a garden hose. On an outback but it won’t be too much different for a Revo.
Great to see this, hey guys I am waiting for my 2019 outback to arrive in Costa Rica (been a couple of months since we ordered from the local distributor) any chance we can have a couple of kits sent to my address in Miami? If I ask my distributor it would rave probably 3 months to get here . Thanks in advance for your help
Dan, your local Hobie kayak dealership is able to drop ship parts to a residential address. If you can't get it figured out send us an email and we can help: info@hobiecat.com
Will this work on a 2018 Outback? My hatch is leaking like crazy right at the seam of the gasket. My dealer gave me this gasket. Why do you guys put the seam in the front where water collects rather than the bottom where the water drains?
Curious why this new 2019 model didn’t come with the second hatch seal. Are you all going to install these top hatch seals at the factory now going forward? Thanks
I'm very surprised that the hatch leak seal wasn't tested before deploying the new kayaks without this in place. If you are now making the new kayaks with this standard, are you going to let people receive this for free with an original receipt submitted to your dealers??
Gasket on Gasket is a A Temp Fix . Hobie , For a $3,000 Kayak Please Fix the Problem Correctly . You have the Most Expensive Kayaks on the Market and People Call you the Mercedes of Kayaks , So Seal Your Front hatch like one . You only need One Seal , your Lid does Not have even Pressure , and the Bungee Type Cords DO Not Close the Hatch Lid Down Tight enough that's the Problem!!! If your going to Sell Premium Kayaks at a Premium Price , then Please build All of it like one , Not Just your 180 Drive System .
All production Outbacks shipping from the Hobie factory have undergone this change in production. This kit satisfies early production Outbacks that didn't get the second gasket.
I don't understand why hobie kayak leaks even when brand new, those little things should be done in manufacturing. For three thousand dollars kayak still need to do such thing by owner is really not fair
Lol “ We could’ve easily sent you a gasket “ How about I’ve done this twice and still get water so you could’ve easily just done a recall or wait until you got it right to release the first gen
I came up with this exact same solution a year ago to fix my 2016 hatch. I have links to all parts needed and video of before and after with water testing. ua-cam.com/video/8yUJzntKMko/v-deo.html
You'd think after so many years of people going offshore ,and some getting gallons of water in the hull throughout the day, you would maybe try to make a new type of front hatch.. 2700 dollar for a kayak that pours water in through the front when a big wave comes over is complete bullshit. Grrat boats though

These hatches have been leaking for years. They should come with this gasket already for 3 g’s.
Quite honestly from the times I’ve used mine I haven’t seen any issues. The dealer gave me the kit but I feel like it’s not needed as of yet...
Glad to see Hobie on the ball!

This looks way more inset on the hinge side per how the 21 outback comes from factory. Hobie do you need to update your video?
