    I wouldn't trust your measuring tool. That didn't look accurate. I would try measuring the seats over again with a real tape measure.

    First, the positive: thanks for not adding idiotic, grating background music like a lot of reviewers do. Now, the constructive criticism: you could have easily made your points in a 3-minute video. One ridiculously tedious 11-minute review with 90 seconds worth of information is enough to keep people from coming back or subscribing. Secondly: you can spend probably $8,000+ on yaks and accoutrements, but you don't have a $6 tape measure?

    so what happens f you are peddling and the fins kick up? seems like it could be destructive and put a ton of torque on the single pin that holds it in place

    Can you do a side by side comparison of the MD180 drive and MD180 w/kick-up fins? Hobie said that we won’t be able to upgrade our 180 drives to have the kick-up fins. They look identical looking at the pics.

      Jimmy Inthaphanh I’m wondering how kick up fins work on my 2019 Outback! Jimmy, hope you do a review on them before I spend a $800 ona set and find the regular md 180 was just Fine!icansee the kick up fins being useful ina river that flows with current strength.?

    Is it my eyes or does the 2020 look like it has more freeboard, and less rocker(hope it's the correct term) at the front. The taper looks more gradual on the 2020.
    I hope so because a lot of people including myself thought the new outback sat too low in the water, especially for ocean fishing. And more of the hull in the water towards the bow would help it ride more of the swell/wave, rather than just punching through it and swamping the deck.
    Wishful thinking...

  • @toddwaters913
    @toddwaters913 4 роки тому

    When randomly running into shallow water with the kickup fins (like where your kayak stops moving) do they still lock back into place so you can flutter kick after being kicked back?
    Or do you need deeper water and speed for them to lock back in?

    • @RXAngler
      @RXAngler  4 роки тому

      You need deeper waters for them to reset.

    • @toddwaters913
      @toddwaters913 4 роки тому +1

      RX Angler So do you prefer the non-kickback fins for shallow marsh fishing while fluttering?
      Seems like they could randomly get kicked back while super shallow and you wouldn't be able to reset them or pull the drive out.

    Heres the important question I would like the answer to..
    Using your kayak as much as you do, how many sets of fins did you replace or have repair work done to the drive in the last year due to running into something.
    I'm looking to purchase an outback but can't afford a new one right now. And the decision I have to make is how much of a factor having reverse will be, because in the used outback market, there's a big price difference in order to have that ability. But it would also be of importance to know how often I'll be replacing fins or having my drive worked on because I've run aground, because either I didn't have reverse, didn't have fins folded back.
    Yes, either of those features appear to be a great value, but in real world numbers, in the last year or two how much did you have to Shell out for not having the fin kick up feature

    • @RXAngler
      @RXAngler  4 роки тому +2

      I’ve had my fins replaced and the drive worked on zero times on the 2019 Outback. I do recommend getting the mirage drive 180. The reverse does come in handy.

    • @lancevoorhees7318
      @lancevoorhees7318 4 роки тому

      I’ve had hobie kayaks for 5 years, never broke a rod in the fins, I use a depth finder and it helps when you are not in clear water! I’ve never replaced a fin or even had problem! They are super reliable, and the very best system on the market! You’ll love them, just be ready when a fish gets hooked, the fun begins!

    • @briane3050
      @briane3050 4 роки тому

      Lance,
      What's your thoughts on reverse. Do you have the 180? In my area a used outback with no reverse I'm looking at $750. To get reverse, I haven't seen one for less that $1300 or $1400.

    • @lancevoorhees7318
      @lancevoorhees7318 4 роки тому +1

      Hi Brian, I was used to not having reverse, but I have it now and I use it around docks and in the marsh or when it is windy! But only use it once in awhile cause I fish pretty big bodies of water! I can only see one flaw or concern, if you have kickup fins, if you are going down a river and have it in reverse, they don’t look like they kick up in reverse, it may sound silly and it is a minor thing, but I do fish slower going down river, back trolling just like a drift boat does! Slower keeps your lure or bait away from the weight near the bottom! I use a depth finder a lot which tells me when to split the mirage drive! Just a few days ago I went over a submerged roadway in about 6 inches of water, no problem just feathered the fins slowly! Got me into a deeper pond and out! I do love the 2019 outback, and may buy kick up fins, gonna try them out when available! Good luck fishing!

      Brian E I bought my first Outback about 15 years ago (Hank Parker Outback Fish edition. Went into the tackle store to buy some hooks 🤣). Obviously it has the MD classic drive...no reverse. I have fished it extensively in ponds, lakes and rivers over the years here in VT with nary a problem. The boat and drive have worn like iron. Never bent a rod nor had any mechanical issue. Still own the boat (GF uses it now). This spring I bought a 2019 Outback with the 180 drive. Now after a full summer of use, I find I use the reverse constantly. It is invaluable to back out of shoreline trees/brush, work around docks and hold position in certain wind/current directions. It has largely stopped me from using an anchor. IMO it is well worth the extra $$. I have no opinion about the kickup fins other than to say I don’t go racing around when in skinny water. Feather and flutter is the name of the game. I do hear the kickup rudder doing its thing on occasion. Hope this helps.

      Yes, if Hobie offered the kick up fin drive individually I would have went that route instead. The 2019 is a great platform.

    Just buy the drive? Kind of silly to buy a whole new kayak when you could’ve just bought to drive. My opinion anyways.

      Drive is like $1K almost. Might as well get a new kayak and sell the older. You'll pretty much break even and have a new yak.

      Break even?? Explain that one to me? He’s only gonna get 2k for his older one and just spent over 3K on the new one. Buy the drive and sell the older model. That makes the most sense. It’s the same kayak,

      What I was meaning by that was if he's going to buy a new drive for $1000, or buy a 2020 for $3K and sell the old one for $2K. Either way he spends $1K and has a new yak. Now if he sells his old drive then yes that's a cheaper way to go. Some people like myself would probably justify keeping the old one as a spare.

      @@paulf9653 Right that's what I was saying.. Sell the drive and away you go.. It seems silly to me but in the end it's his preference.. It's all good. Tight lines to all..

      Agreed. I wouldn't have upgraded for kick ups either, not for a grand.

      Daniel Garcia daaamn why did you watch it then? He gave info for the people that don’t know about the kayak. Dumbass comment if the year 🤣

      @@johndohlea4360 actually I fast forward thru 90% of it. don't get me wrong I watch his fishing vids from time to time... if you REALLY feel this was needed... then I guess u can't just do your own research on something as simple as KickUp Fins. in addition, if all the info was soooo great... why not measure the seat before hand lol... in reality... KickUp Fins are kinda nice if your finishing with lots of structure underneath... in the marsh ? hmmm not sure how much use youre gonna get outta kickup fins when your so shallow... not really worth an upgrade.
