  • In a harrowing episode, Emma Kenny explores the tragic and complex case of Aaron Friar, whose life was brutally taken in a family-involved murder. Ellie Friar, Aaron's daughter, along with accomplices Russell Jones and Gavin Case, played roles in this shocking crime, unraveling a disturbing tale of manipulation, influence, and betrayal.
Emma delves deep into the dynamics of the relationship between Aaron and Ellie, and how Russell Jones and Gavin Case became entwined in their lives, ultimately contributing to a fatal outcome. She examines the psychological profiles of each individual involved, seeking to understand the motives and circumstances that led to such a tragic event.
Through her expert analysis, Emma discusses the impact of peer influence in criminal behavior, particularly in young individuals, and the complexities of familial relationships that can sometimes take a dark turn. She also addresses the broader societal and legal implications of the case, including the challenges faced during the investigation and trial.

I watched these 3 being interviewed on EWU. I've never seen anything as strange, cringy & weird in my life. The terrible thing is we'll never know if the abuse truly happened or if it's just another of her lies. To doubt her & it's true is awful but if she's lying this poor man has had not only his life viciously taken but also his reputation.

Oh no daddy won’t let me date an adult while I’m still a minor, he’s so abusive. And he won’t let me go out this wkend bc I’m failing math! Someone needs to call the cops & CPS/DCF immediately dad needs jail time. 🙄🙄

@dko61 is bad enough to have and deal with the symptoms. It's worse when judged on the mental illness and now who we are. It doesn't define my identity. Our individuality is not a disorder. Our individuality makes us who we are. No person with bipolar is the same. We are on a spectrum. Most deal with their symptoms. Not use it to excuse or threaten others or act like it's our superpower. It's something often we are abused with. " You're crazy." You are mad," etc. Which is going trigger us negatively. It would trigger anyone to be name called. People wouldn't say to a person with cancer that their illness is their identity. That is an illness, just like bipolar. Personality disorders are the real problem in society. They create the problems, they play with reality, and trigger symptoms of confusion in others. And yes, confusion can lead us to moods and anger, yet we still understand right from wrong.

I watched the EWU episode of these three. I kept laughing when it came to Russell because of how ridiculous and childish he sounded. I was abused a lot. Wanting your abuser dead is one thing, actually murdering them is another. None of my abusers saw court. None of them got locked up for what they did to me. Being abused doesn't give anyone the right to murder someone. If youre going to fight back, make it a fair fight. And if the abuser dies, oh well.

If the brain is still developing as teenagers and she made these choices then, does it stand to reason her brain could possibly grow in intensity to do more of the same? Like once a liar always a liar type of thinking, or Leopards don't change their spots. No matter how much rehabilitation is given it seems adults who kill and are released go on to do it again. As manipulative as she is I don't she can be totally rehabilitated, one can only hope for the best.

That is a caring parent to me. She wanted him dead because she thought he was stopping her from being happy with her boyfriend. Gavin was happy to do it because of the rape charge. I still cannot believe how calm & uncaring Ellie appears to be throughout her entire interrogation. Her dog & her little sisters seem to be the only thing she remotely cared about. Besides her boyfriend of course. But she sounds so cold & emotionless when talking about her own father. I cannot relate. My father was my hero growing up & quite frankly still is. Same w my stepfather. I was blessed w two amazing father figures who loved my siblings/step siblings & I and they have always been there anytime one of us needed them. I think Elle wanted to punish her father for telling her what she can do, she picked gavin because of his reputation cause she thought it would be easier to manipulate someone who had shown that he was interested in committing murder, and Russell who I think didn't realise the reality of what they were planning, also many children who are abused do keep it a secret to protect their sibling but she was not secretive about the abuse she was laying down a foundation for the killing of her father, she probably didn't realise the kind of sentence she would get she Thought she could blame the 2 men and they would except it to protect her and her imaginary baby

Many people truly suffered abuse from parents in the past silently, as is in Greatest taboos series, but now too many just use it and lie. It's something that is impossible to prove it happened or it didn't. Years ago children were truly innocent and did not know what abuse was let alone use it to get their own way. This girl was not a coward scared little girl if she was truly being abused she would have spoke to an adult, her mother. By telling friends at school she's putting forward a defence before killing her father. Who's to say that if had she reported abuse to her mother and the authorities found her father guilty, when living with her mother she also might have objected to her boyfriend....would she then get him to kill her mother.

Ellie absolutely hits a lot of bullet points for a victim of sexual abuse--and not just from a grooming perspective.
    1. She lies for attention, which could be her way of acting out for help.
    2. Her father lived in a small space that often required family members to share sleeping arrangements, which would be the perfect opportunity for familial sexual abuse.
    3. She downplays her mistreatment, likely because she doesn't feel she meets the archetype of a "perfect victim."
    4. Her father was aggressively protective of her sexual relationships and while that's typically a good thing, it could also be an indicator he saw her as "his" property.
    5. She exhibited inappropriate sexual behavior before Gavin entered her life, which means he wasn't the instigating factor of her psychosexual issues.
    6. Ellie referring to herself by a different name echoes symptoms of a dissociative disorder. Interrogations are stressful and stress is a massive trigger for dissociation.
And all that's just off the top of my head. Obviously, I have not met Ellie nor am I a doctor, but her allegations of sexual abuse hold a lot more weight than most other offenders known for blatantly lying (i.e. Casey Anthony, Jodi Arias, et al). Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but, I'm inclined to believe her.

God damnit with the bipolar diagnosis again! Many family members of mine suffer Bipolar disorder. Some severe some manage better. They are more prone to be a danger to themselves than anyone else! Really pisses me off when monsters blame that and other disorders. I will say there are some disorders that I believe can contribute to one’s predisposition for violence but those are not nearly as common and difficult to diagnose.

I was 16 and my son’s father was 19 back in 1992. It was legal where I lived, as we were in the same friend group of high schoolers. Romeo and Juliet law. However, at 14, I was groomed by a 26 year old predator. This happens SO often and adult women prey on young boys, too. It’s so easy now with the internet and these conversations must happen as soon as a child can access the net. As early as possible. 😢

@@jessicastacey9058That is absolutely terrifying and I’m sorry you endured that. What a disgusting human being that teacher was.
I grew up in the 90’s and early 00’s and it wasn’t uncommon to catch the eye of much older men, at the age of 14/15. It’s less acceptable these days to have scaffolders leer at girls in school uniform, innocently going about their day, but back then I remember it just being this thing that happened and at 16, I even found it all a bit of a laugh. Now I’m a mother of teens, I’d probably end up in prison if I caught a grown man leering at, or propositioning my kids like that. Same for that vulgar teacher you dealt with. Polio would be the least of his troubles.

As much as I loathe this young woman, I have to say that in America there is absolutely what's known as the "Romeo & Juliette" defense against prosecution. It occurs when a jurisdiction passes legislation that criminalizes sex between anyone over the age of consent with anyone under the age of consent. Often these laws will include very specific exclusions that relate to the difference in age between the 2 people involved. Usually after the age of 15 and not to exceed 1-3 years.
