As someone who suffered a serious head injury during a flying accident in my twenties (triple skull fracture) I can truly look back now in my later life and realise the dramatic personality change that ensued. I literally went from a kind, gentle honest person to a violent and aggressive criminal. The change is gradual and barely noticeable at the time but as the years pass and you pause to consider your life and attitudes, you begin to question your behaviour and the realisation that you have become someone you don’t want to be begins, in my case, the difficult issue is that to overcome the dramatic character change is to realise that you can’t trust your instinctive reactions especially in moments requiring immediate determination and reaction. My remedy is to walk away from potentially aggressive or criminal situations and to spend at least 24 hours to consider carefully what an appropriate course of action truly is. I know that without this procedure the consequences of my actions could be catastrophic for other people. Something I know that deep in my heart I would realise that I deeply regretted and found abhorrent after the event. It took many decades to come to this conclusion of my own volition and I can’t help wondering how many other people suffer similar issues. Serious head trauma should be recognized as a prime catalyst for behavioural change and a focussed treatment regime should be automatically carried out by the medical profession in order to address the patients potential for destructive behaviour and to protect other people from these issues of course!

If you could would you please private message me, he really needs someone who knows what he is going through to help him with some things he doesn’t understand. His accident was 5 years ago that gave him the TBI after years of football concussions. He’s really seeing a decline in his mental abilities. I would appreciate it as seeing for the first time someone who is experienced exactly what he is.

I'm so sorry that happened. You are so insightful! Have you considered public speaking? You could gather groups of head trauma victims and their close friends and family members and tell your stories. For the ones with recent traumas, I'm sure they would appreciate a heads up on what to look for, and the existing traumas would appreciate knowing how to deal with their personality changes. My brothers one aged 28 and one aged 42 both took their own lives in 2016 and 2019 respectively. I had no idea you were part of the club that no-one wants to be part of of. My sincerest condolences to you and your family.

For some people this is a story of a man who simple killed his family and himself.
For others it is a story of an innocent man who is blamed for murdering his family, while the real murder/s are still free.
For me this is a story about the dangers that could come from brain damage and untreated mental health issues.
I remember when this happened, I was about 18 at the time. I was a huge wrestling fan and this shocked everyone to the core. I still think about his young son and his wife a lot to this day.

I was too, I've watched so much about the mental health of wrestlers. My little brother was a wrestling fan when we were growing up and I used to tease him about it but when I looked into wrestlers I realised just how much they put their bodies through, and the brain damage. It's pretty upsetting.
Oh, I remember when this happened. It was a complete shock for it to escalate to THAT point. Ever since, WWE has been trying their best to scrub all they can about Benoit so even knowing who he was before the incident may eventually become harder to find in the future...
Thank you, Emma, for normalizing having those super dark thoughts, during a grieving period of life. Losing my mother in a freak accident, when I was only 22 definitely caused sooo many extremely dark thoughts and emotions. That doesn't mean that, I wasn't thankful for my life, or that I wanted to truly leave forever, as some have assumed. The pain is just too much, for some to know what to do with, sometimes...

To help understand Chris' mindset, I would recommend watching the Chris Benoit tribute to Eddie Guerrero after he died. To me, it is the starting point for Chris' downfall. He looked utterly, utterly broken. Chris died on 24 June 2007 but mentally he died the day Eddie passed away.
A lot of people in the wrestling world defend and attempt to effectively entirely absolve Chris by saying he wasn't in his right mind. I don't disagree that he wasn't in his right mind but this wasn't just a freak moment. The framework for a man who could potentially murder was in place prior. He was abusive, there are several stories for how quickly his temper could snap from fellow wrestlers and he regularly abused drugs.
RIP to Nancy and her beautiful son, Daniel.
Also I find the idea of him having the brain of an 87 year old Alzheimer's patient nonsensical. There's no way an 87 year old Alzheimer's patient could manage the level of co-ordinated travelling a wrestler does and remember what spots / wrestling moves to do in ring. Also, why did no one mention how forgetful he was or that he was entirely unable to hold lucid conversations if this was the case?

Your understanding of alzheimer's for one.
While I am qualified in human biology, I certainly don't claim to be an expert. However, I am entitled to give my opinion, as is everyone else. Hence the comments section. UA-cam is for interaction as much as it is for watching. As far the Alzheimer's, I think that in combination of the doctor's claim that his brain was similar to that of an 87 year old, makes my claim entirely fair.
I remember when this happened and I was so shocked. Thank you for trying to shine a light on the fact that this wasn't a clear cut case. Three lives were lost, all tragically.

Reasons That Chris Benoit May Be Innocent (Taken from UA-cam)
Chavo Guerrero - a close friend of Benoit- told WWE magazine that he talked to Chris for while on Friday night on his house phone. About 45 minutes into the conversation, Chris told him that there was somebody knocking at his door and he was going to see who it was. Shortly after Chris answered the door, there was a “scuffle” and then his house phone line went dead. Chris could only be reached on his cell phone about 3 hours later. This is very significant. This explains why there was no forced entry. Chris let the killer or killers in.
After Chavo reached Chis on his cell phone, he said that Chris sounded very odd, groggy and tired. He also said that Chris told him “I Love You Chavo” which sounded forced. The WWE also said that when Chris called in and told them that Nancy and Daniel were sick he did not sound like himself. He sounded groggy. Chris then said “I Love You” which they say was out of context because he usually didn’t say this.
Chris Benoit’s cell phone is missing. The police cannot find his cell phone or the needles they say Chris used to inject himself with steroids shortly before he died. The police have turned his cell phone off.
Chris was not hanging from the weight machine, he was laying on the floor underneath the machine. Another officer said that Benoit was “slumped” against the weight machine.
There was a white cloth wrapped around Chris’ neck. If he was so suicidal why would he care if his neck was bruised?
The medical examiner says that Chris Benoit died on Saturday. The text messages were sent on Sunday. Chris was already dead so who sent the text messages? It is noted that nobody talked to Chris on Sunday.
The steroids found in Chris’ house were not in his body.
If Chris’ had murdered his family then why did he need to text people? Think about it. Everybody was dead. Nobody would hear him talking so why text? Calling would have been easier. (I believe the killer text Benoit’s address to get somebody to come to the house to find the bodies)
Chris sent Chavo a text message telling him his address. Why would he do this? Chavo already knew were Chris lived. He spent the previous weekend with him.
Chris’ body was badly de- composed, about the same as Nancy’s. This shows he died sooner than Sunday.
Why would he tie up Nancy to kill her? He was a big guy. He could have just hit her one good time and she would have been out.
Ray also told me that the world press is reporting the manner of the deaths wrong. He says that Daniel was shot in his head and Nancy was shot in her chest.
Chavo said that the Chris Benoit seemed “worried” about something but he could not get Chris to open up and tell him why he was worried.
There was no Bible besides Chris’ body. Why would he place a bible beside Nancy and Daniel and not place one beside his own if he knew he was about to take his own life?
There were 10 empty beer cans and an empty body of wine besides Chris’ body. He tested negative for alcohol.
The toxicology confirmed that Chris had Hydrocodone (pain killer) Xanex (anti-anxiety drug). I have used both of these. These 2 drugs combined will sedate Chris and make him very sleepy. So he could not fight back.
The police originally said that Daniel died on Friday because his body was badly de-composing. This supports my belief that all 3 died on Friday night. The police changed the manner of Daniel’s death 3 times. 1st he died from a garbage bag, 2nd he died from a choke hold, 3rd he was smothered by a pillow. Why would they keep changing?
The police kept changing the location of where Nancy’s body was found. 1st she was found in the downstairs family room. 2nd she was found in the upstairs bedroom. 3rd she was found in the house office.
Chris’ father said that Chris called him on father’s day and told him that he wished he could spend more time with his family but he had to work. One of Nancy’s friend says that Nancy Loved Chris and she had no plans to leave him.
Retired Wrestler Bam Bam Bigalow died 1-19-07. Sherry Martel died 6-15-07. The Benoit family died 6-22-07. Since this family died, 2 other wrestlers have died. (Brian Adams and Johnny Crush in July and August 07) Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and Brian Pillman all died the night before they were set to win title belts. Sherry Martel’s death is even more suspicious to me. Sherry Martel had ties to Nancy Benoit’s ex-husband Kevin Sullivan. The circumstances surrounding her death have not been released.
Kevin Sullivan told Chris Benoit that he would kill him. Kevin is currently a high ranking member of a satanic cult. Kevin is also on the WWE Board of Directors. Kevin Sullivan also had motive to kill Daniel Benoit because he was Chris and Nancy’s offspring. Retired wrestler Dusty Roads said that “he danced with the devil” when working with Kevin Sullivan who is known as being Cold-hearted and conniving. The Benoit family was murdered on the 10-year anniversary of Nancy’s divorce from Kevin Sullivan.
Nancy Benoit’s death was posted on the internet, 14 hours before her body was found.
Weeks before he died, Chris Benoit’s colleagues said that Chris began taking alternate routes to and from work and back to his house. Chris and Nancy believed that somebody was following them. Chris’ friends dismissed his worries as paranoia.
The Benoit family was murdered the same week that the WWE had a story line of “Who killed Vince Mc..

Yea…I’ve never been thoroughly convinced Chris did it. Men rarely tie up their wives like Nancy was before they kill them, and they can blame it on brain damage all they want, but how many 85 year old Alzheimer patients go around killing their families!?!… Just too many things point to a possible set up. Thanks for bringing this information to the discussion! This case deserves a second look.

Chris killed his wife and child. But there are others who have some responsibility in what happened, which is why they try to erase him from pro wrestling history. It's not because of what he did, it's because of why he did it. People like to hide evidence of their bad actions.
Chris was also a victim, of something he deeply loved.

This is the best telling of this case I've ever watched, it was nice to watch something on this subject without it being a direct attack on benoits character. He spent his life getting hurt to entertain millions of people and in the end doing what he loved and what we loved him doing was what brought about his demise. It's a shame he can't and won't be recognised in the WWE any more because for anyone that didn't watch him he was brilliant, I understand why though. Was just nice to watch an unbiased observation of what happened. Well done em ❤❤

Thank you for covering this, I was such a wrestling geek back in the day. A certain elder in my family always had to patronisingly remind me it wasn't real until I pointed out that the soaps they religiously watched and the characters they spoke about as if they knew them, wasn't real! They couldn't argue with that lol. It's all just entertainment.

If you’re not a diehard wrestling fan you’ll never know the true depths of how horrible his death was and how his one horrible mistake overshadowed the immense grief and mental and physical destruction he was going through at the time. RIP Chris and Eddie.

I've always been nervous about people covering this case because I'm an enormous wrestling and Chris Benoit fan. Even my screen-name on here is a wrestling joke! That said you did such an incredible job bringing respect to all the victims in this and calling out the horrible mix of circumstances that lead to this nightmare. The WWE owes it to these people, risking their lives everyday for entertainment, to change the way that they do business. They aren't given appropriate health care, the rehab facility that they offer is a joke, and their contracting process is utter madness. I adore you Emma!

Thank you for covering the case love this. So many people branded him a monster. What he did was monstrous. But he was severely brain damaged. And suffered great trauma. He was my favourite wrestler as a kid. Its such a sad sad story

You’re the only person besides my partner who trained under a former wrestler and the dark side of the ring episode to do this case justice. Thank you. It makes me happy to see it so researched and know what you’re talking about and this case fascinates me as a kid who grew up in the attitude era of wrestling.
As someone who grew up watching chris benoit this did hit home so much when it actually happened, it was only yesterday my sister told me you were covering this and i can honestly say im so glad you have, it was far too easy with the industry he was in to instantly place the blame on steroid abuse. It is heart breaking what happened to his family, but the point that resonates with me is the prospect of "ascension" could he have believed all of the family were to ascend? did he know there was irreversible damage done to his heart? maybe he wanted to take the journey "leaving this earth" with his family. it was a horrible tragedy but to completely wipe everything he had done in his career and the accolades he achieved, its tough. As you said when he made so much money for the wrestling federation and gave all the upcoming stars someone to aspire to become to then have that gone in an instant, is understandable but also seems as if its being swept under the rug. The superstars put their lives at risk every single time they step into the ring, and there should be a point where they're evaluated and forced to stop. This as you said was an awful chain of causation with two innocent people being taken from the earth when they had so much left to give. I really appreciate the perspective you gave on this case, and bringing light to the fact that this wasnt a cut and dry murder suicide. Thank you for the compassion the full in depth deep dive and the view from all sides. ❤

I have literally been researching this case this week and have been hoping Emma would cover it! I am a wrestling fan, as well as a true crime fan. It will be interesting to hear Emma's views on the "too many hits to the head" or the "steroid rage" theories. I'm super excited to see this one!
I'm looking forward to this one. I grew up watching him wrestle plus, this happened very close to where I lived as a child, while I was still there. It's a heartbreaking case but, then again, most of these cases are.

Really shocked British bull dog died, I grew up watching wrestling, and remember alot of the wrestlers in this story, my younger brother had all the action figures. I can relate to what Emma said about the loss of her father 🙏🏾 I lost my older brother in the same way due to the same illness. Hope definitely pulls you through the trauma.
His son Davey Boy Smith Jr. is currently wrestling still, he's mainly in the US Indie scene as far as I can recall.
Thanks again for covering this case! I personally never understood the fun of watching wrestling but that doesn't matter. This is a real tragic story. I hope that in the future much more will be done to prevent serious brain damage in sports.

Yeah considering how much brain damage was found...a guy so young to have way so much damage is beyond me...but I wonder if he can ever be forgiven for what he did..but his damage to his brain must of played a part of how he behaved...a sad outcome for sure..
I've been a wrestling fan for 30+ years and a fan of True Crime for over 15...never did I think those two worlds would crossover (and wished they never had) but I am thankful for the respect and decency you showed this case and the obvious research you conducted (many don't bother doing either of these things and sit on the 'Wrestlers are all brutes and he was a monster' fence. Thanks Emma for the care and professional way you covered this case.
In no way do I believe Benoit was in his right frame of mind when this happened, however, that doesn't mean he can be absolved from what he did during his final hours. I was a huge fan of his and had massive respect for him (notice the past tense). I find it difficult to watch any old wrestling with him involved without remembering what his hands did. I honestly think Chris himself would agree with his erasure from history. In his right mind he would be as disgusted as we are with his actions.

in regards to the Wrestling business...this tragedy and it's following research into CTE did force some big changes. No weapon hits directly to the head, any possible concussion that happens during matches cause the match to be called off instantly, and any signs of concussion stops you being able to compete. this with a lighter schedule, more drug awareness/prevention and less extreme moments

I'm going to be a bit spicy with this one. I have absolutely zero sympathy for someone that killed his own wife, and son without hesitation. His son was 7 years old for christ's sake. I'm a wrestling fan, but I don't treat a family annihilator differently, just because he was famous. My auntie committed suicide when I was 10. Anyone whose been through suicide , will find this case a hell of a lot more horrific than the average person, as we know what that pain feels like, and the level of anger you have against the person who did it. Murder suicides are the highest level of evil, cowardice, callousness, and selfishness. Take your own life, whatever. Do not touch another person! He's a murderer, and I rightly despise him for it. Only a psychopath could have killed his own wife and son like that. We never normally make excuses for psychopaths. I dont care what drug cocktail he was on, he killed his family in cold blood, and showed more hesitation in ending his own life than theirs. What a surprise.

Now that this is finally out..... I think you did a very good job on this deeper dive. Very respectful of the craft and what wrestlers do as athletes while still being able to dig close to the core of the very issues being part of it may bring. Noticed you seemed very passionate on the topic though like what many were just casual watchers with family. The story is extremely tragic and still brings pain to people to this day. I have loved wrestling most of my life, so much so my partner is a wrestler, and played rugby myself so this topic is very close to my heart. Emma has conveyed this shocking story with the upmost compassion and tact. Its both moving and informative and brings a lot more understanding to the tragic life of Chris Benoit and the actions he carried out on that terrible day.

I’m 71 years old ack in the 50s and 60s we watched wrestling every Sunday. When I was in my 20s I was with a love 💕 of my life and we had friends who worked with the wwe I got to meet some of the popular wrestlers of the time

I was so interested to see your perspective on this tragic case, having a big wrestling interest from my childhood and knowing this case very well. I feel like you analysed this case so well and really reflects my feelings on this tragedy. I think a career of head injuries and mental health battles played the most catastrophic roles in this case. The amount of damage to his brain, paired with the loss of his best friend was the downward spiral. He had been very paranoid in the weeks leading up to the deaths, thinking he was being followed and watched. His mental state was absolutely at breaking point. I understand why WWE cut him out of their history in the moment of it all happening, but I feel like his mental and physical health should be taken into consideration before scratching out his name forever. Such a sad and tragic case 😢
I worked in a psychiatric unit as a support worker for people with acquired and traumatic brain injuries and nursed a patient with dimentia pugilistica it's crazy how little importance was given to the preservation and protection of the brain back then.

I really appreciate your coverage of this topic. Back in my day as a youngster watching wrestling we had a commentator by the name of Gordon Solie. The wrestlers of the day were Dusty Rhodes, Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, Mr. Wrestling #2, Bruno Sammartino, etc. Back then, I had no idea of how things really worked. And it’s heartbreaking to know what these guys really put themselves through for our entertainment (as well as for their own fame and income). Great memories as a kid. But now, I can’t watch this, boxing, or freestyle fighting. Thank you for bringing more attention to these issues.

One of the very few memories I have with my father is watching Wrestling on a Sunday afternoon. It was one of my favorite past times. Stumbled across this. Been a huge fan of wrestling since I was a child and watched that man as I was growing up. Witness the death of Eddie and then the murder suicide soon after. I’m glad you took this case with a lot of respect and presented it well. Amazing work
I have no sympathy for Chris Benoit himself only this his family. That man had a choice and he took his wife’s and his child’s life. If he only killed himself it’s a different story because it was a tragic case of he wasn’t doing well but he decided to take his family’s life as well. Killed his wife in cold blood, put his son to sleep and made sure he would never wake up. He was doing stuff to make sure people weren’t worried either.
I have all of the sympathy to his family who wasn’t taken care of by the WWE who should have taken them under their care and made sure they were able to keep themselves afloat. I don’t agree that he needs to be recognized because he almost destroyed the business. His son can wrestle but he shouldn’t do it paying tribute to a murder. I don’t care what anyone says he can be the greatest in the ring that doesn’t excuse being a monster
Thank you for covering this case just watched it yesterday. I loved WWE and remember Chris and Eddie well, I was so upset when they said Chris and his family had died, but wanted to know what lead up to that moment. You have brought to light more knowledge for me then I could ever known before. Also when you listen to the Eddie tribute for the Hall of Fame you can hear the pain in Chris voice its such a tragedy that this couldn't have been prevented.

Growing up young watching wrestling especially the late 90's-early 00's era of wrestling, this broke my heart hearing what Chris Benoit did in 2007 because he was so liked and respected in WWF/WWE before that horrifying crime happened. Thank you Emma for covering this story and your story telling on this subject because wrestling was changed and heartbroken when this took place.
On many of your previous videos you’ve mentioned the ramifications of head injuries. As a result, its made me more understanding of the changes in my husband, who had a major concussion 30y ago. My daughter has recently suffered 2 concussions over 6 months. I’ve just sent her the info you shared about concussion legacy foundation.
Being a WWE fan, & I'm a fan of Emma too....I'm interested to hear her take on this tragedy.

We called closed head injuries and they can turn on a dime and their damage has been felt for years. And they truely have no control
