Lyrics:
I don't want to be hostile
I don't want to be dismal
And I don't want to rot in an apathetic existence
See I want to believe you
And I wanted to trust you
And I want to have faith to put away the dagger
But you lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat and steal
You lie, cheat and steal
And I tolerate you
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat and steal
You lie, cheat and steal
I cannot tolerate
Veil of virtue hung to hide your method
While I smile and laugh and dance
And sing your praise and glory
Shroud of virtue hung to mask your stigma
As I smile and laugh and dance
And sing your glory
While you lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
How can I tolerate you?
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
I cannot tolerate
Our guilt, our blame
I've been far too sympathetic
Our blood, our fault
I've been far too sympathetic
I am not innocent
I am not innocent
You are not innocent
No one is innocent
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
You lie, cheat, and steal
I cannot tolerate
I will not longer tolerate you
I will grow down inside you
I must go down beside you
No one is innocent
I know Justin might as well be Tool's only bassist to most fans but goddamn if Paul's playing isn't incredible right here.
He makes this song. Incredible.
His bass tone is bone-crushing, and he gets that chime and harmonic thing. It's beautiful. Rickenbacker love.
It would be cool if he came back and Justin stayed, a five piece with two bass players Justin rhythm bass and Paul lead.
Not at all, this album got me into Tool
I love everything Paul did with Tool
I love how Maynard yells. Not some kind of emo scream. It’s a man yelling.
You hear him sing and think that emo scream is exactly what he’d do… but your right it isn’t
You should try listening to thrash metal if you only know emo scream..
In my mind Aenima and Lateralus are technically their best albums... but for digging into the blistering infectious rot of the human soul absolutely nothing beats Undertow
Fear is technically their best record now.

Ænima is my favorite.
This song actually goes so unbelievably fucking hard

The drums are always great in Tool, Danny is a beast
Certain TOOL songs imply murderous intent. This comment deserves one.
"No one is innocent" Best line of the song.
But not the best part
That’s the best part to you.? Yikes
yeeess makes me realises that he is becoming "tolerant" and understans that he also has to lie cheat and steal just like the person that he is talking to, he cant be ethical as he would like to.
@@hugorezende199 I think this is about Maynard's time in the army. As a cadet, he had to swear an oath to "not lie, not cheat, not steal, and not tolerate those that do so", but then he realized that the army lies, cheats and steals anyways, hence the "shroud of virtue, while I laugh and dance and sing your glory..."

I dedicate this song to all women in this world.
Every song on this album could have easily been a “single”.
Idk floods?
@@chaos5840 Eh, if you shortened down the intro (which would be a crime) the latter half of the song is as catchy as it gets.
@@itsfine5818 good point
Whatever they'd do to "Swampsong" in a radio edit would be an abomination, though.
@@chaos5840 Flood is my favorite song on the album
This album was way ahead of its time.
I feel they all are. Even takes the fans a minute to come around to how good they are...

Anything Tool does is either ahead of time or timeless..
Not to my mom apparently, because she bought a CD of thus when it first appeared. Oh the memories.
it still is! be well my friend in TOOL.
Paul's bass tone defined early Tool's sound. Nobody had a bass tone like that.

@@holden6104 i understand youre young and have no clue of metal music
@@metalmike1976 Hold your horses there, buddy. I'm talking about bass TONE, not bass LINES. The sound of Paul's bass was unique. Listen to Undertow again and listen to the sound of the bass guitar, not the riffs or the tuning but the sound itself. By the way, I'm 41, how about you?
This album is 30 years old today, still front to back bangers. Life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on life.
I am real real sorry about the tape and horse a crap like mtev and lollapalooza
My first cassette and cd

This album explains me front to back. Maynard is a genius.
MJK has a knack for writing songs that end up being more effective than therapy. I can sing out an applicable song and it’s like exorcising a demon. It’s like he wrote all the words I wish I could have said to people in the worst times of my life, and I know I’m not alone. I know others feel the cathartic release of some of these songs.
SO THATS why I'm really vibing with singing these songs it's so cathartic
Dude you said it all took the words outa my soul
seems like a tool
I agree 100% bro. Bottom and Flood have the same cathartic effect.
Oh, I definetely feel what you say, and you're not alone, dude.
As much as I love lateralus and Aenema, this album is just pure fire. So much emotion and aggression. A masterpiece🔥
This album can be described with ONLY one word: BALLS!
Yes indeed. A timeless masterpiece at that.
Each album is its own different masterpiece, with no equal
For sure!
All the lie and cheat and steal choruses occur at 1:00 2:00 3:00 which is just something I noticed. And they specifically square in length, once… kind of, which he also says you lie cheat and steal 28 times, subtract that by the amount of times he said I cannot tolerate you or so, you get 23, which is what Viginiti Tres means, which is a song tool made 16 years later.
Wow, nice catch!
Crazy shit. All of it has to be deliberate, Tool are heavily into numerology
@@yellowkangdexasthur4904 Lachrymology, too.

Was at the New Orleans Show on February first.
Right before they played this song Maynard asked “who in here is thirty and under? Raise your hands”
Then he says
“When this song was written, you weren’t even sperm”
One of the best part of the show
Yeah I laughed my ass off when he said that!
Lmao I remember that. Funny as hell
I remember that, the entire place was laughing
I saw them at the state place theater on canal street in 96 or 97 when they were touring for aenima. Mind blowing.
I’m buying the discs even though they’ve uploaded all there music to the web, this stuff is to important to me to risk losing.
Its sounds better in the physical world
Shuhei Hisagi CDs are digital music so it in fact sounds the exact same but i understand the sentiment. plastic discs are forever, the internet may not always exist (and volatile solid state memory as well as mechanical HDDs eventually fail)

is it normal for someone to listen to this song over and over again for a whole day?...
I find this behavior interesting because we can learn more about ourselve's and others by noticing our behaviors. This urge to relisten to Tool songs i recognize also, as if a part of myself periodically yearns for it. If i where to try to guess or bring to consciousness, i would say there is a general feeling in me that my environment has been setting the bar too low. Given our existence is limited i find it appaling we are still expending so much energy in stupid entertainment, what our peers are interested in, or the continuation of the status quo. These pursuits are not only devoid of meaning they aren't even that interesting to begin with. It is as if Tool gives me the confidence to see that these people have no idea what they are doing, copying eachother like a bunch of monkeys, so you might as well take matters into your own hands and make up your own mind, growing and learning as you go along.

The third “lie cheat and steal” has so much aggression behind it I love it so much
That bong rip at the beginning always gets me lol 🤣
That’s not a bong rip that’s an engine shutting off with someone pulling the pull cord on the engine to try and start it again, if you’ve ever used a pressure washer or an engine that uses a pull cord you’d know the sound
I remember laughing to myself because even though I know the lyrics i keep hearing "you like, chicken stew" on 1:00 and onwards
You're right
This is the song Steve O used to piss off his neighbour

It really is. Everything after it was so different that it almost seems like 2 different bands. At least we got Opiate and Undertow 🤷♂️

How I'd love to scream like Maynard does

Wish it was a little louder.
i'm at 100 on my computer, with my comp speakers turned all the way up and it's still not loud enough.
It's not the uploader's fault. The original CD was mixed pretty shitty, and the overall sound was always a muted and muffled. My only complaint about this album.

I remember it all.
Best lineup ever- Maynard, Paul, Danny, and Adam. I can't think of a better combo than that. So glad I got to see them in 94 before Paul left.
🤙
Justin has been in Tool for like 16 times longer. He is Tool. Be serious. This would be like saying Blaze Bailey was the best Maiden vocalist.
@@LudusAurea With all due respect, Chancelor followed Paul's lead. Opiate and Undertow put Tool on the map and established their sound. You want to get technical- Justin at "16 times longer" would put him at 48 years past 1993, which is 2041. Seriously dude- give it a rest.
And really- the Blaze Bailey comparison is weak. Just like Dickinson is an original founding member of Maiden, so is D'Amour an original founding member of Tool. I never said D'Amour's replacement is the best- that' s what you are saying. In actuallity, your claim is more like saying Blaze Bailey is the best Maiden vocalist since you're saying a replacement is better than the original. Peace, God Bless.
I can’t think of a better combination of talent and unique style in the 90s than what Tool brought with the Undertow album. So glad I got to see them in concert in Feb 1994 before D’Amour left
