I was 19 when No Quarter was released in 1973, it remains to this day a timeless classic. Rarely does a cover creates its own singular vibe & yet remains true. Instantly recognizable as both Led Zeppelin & Tool, the torch has been passed on from one to the other. Tool is the heir apparent of the 'Hammer of the Gods'.

When I bought the boxed Salival package and began my journey, I was not shocked to hear this song. It flowed like the same water found a different path as natural as a stream feeding the same river.
I'm a gigantic Led Zeppelin fan but this cover took it to heights I didn't know were possible. Tool doesn't cover songs normally but picking this one was just perfect selection!
Im lost here? Why is everyone commenting on which version of this song is better? Thats so silly really. Tool covered the song out of pure respect for LZ. Dont spoil the gesture by arguing over who did it best. I dont even think Tool tried to upstage anyone either. Just appreciate both versions and be grateful for two absolutely amazing bands giving us their interpretation of this magical song.
Tool definitely paid homage to this song, with respect........and also happened to out-do Zeppelin on their own song in the process. It was never any intended upstaging, Tool's version just happens to live up to the song's potential more than Zep did. Doesn't mean Zep didn't do an amazing job on this song, Tool just did it perfect.
Dude shit the fuck up everyone thinks they are both good, this one is better the audio is pristine and the vocal is on point way better and clearer than Led Zeppelin when you cover a song you do it your way the way you see it should be done fam. So nah it’s perfectly understandable to say which is better.
lyrics Lock the door, kill the light. No one's coming home tonight. The sun beats down and don't you know? All our lives are growing cold, oh... They bring news that must get through. To build a dream for me and you, oh. Locked in a place where no one goes. They ask no quarter They have no quarter. Lock the door, kill the light No one's coming home tonight It's getting colder (7x) Locked in a place where no one goes. Lock the door, kill the light No one's coming home tonight They bring news that must get through. Dying peace in me and you Locked in a place where no one goes. We have no quarter We have no quarter We ask no quarter
The best version of this song is when Zeppelin themselves played it live. There are tons of amazing live version of No Quarter. All the way from the ones in 1973 where it was 10 minutes long (already extended) all the way to when it was 30 minutes long (Zeppelin weren't just hard rock, they were progressive as fuck, especially live), when Plant sounds like he's just had a revelation, Bonham is on a ton of cocaine and his drumming sounds like a giant wolf running after you, Page's guitar varies from super aggressive to delicate and Jones' piano playing is hauntingly beautiful. That can't be topped. That being said, this is a cool cover and a nice homage. It takes balls to cover Zeppelin. Gotta give it up for Tool there.
inglishbulldog Sorry, this is better than the Zep version. And why would you want to hear this for 30 min unless you were on acid? Well, give me some acid and the 30 min version and I'll get back to you.............boh versions all good, just playin.
Ishmael3261 Well obviously, you get a lot of amazing variations within that 30 min version. They go into 5 or 6 pieces that could be completely different songs. From funk to boogie blues, to acid rock then back into the dark progressiveness of No Quarter. Although I prefer the 10-15 min live versions.
Ishmael3261 I bet Tool is ashamed that you are a fan. Why did they pick this song to cover, dumbshit. Not playing. You havent a clue and it shows. Crawl back underneath that rock from whence you came.
inglishbulldog Man I have got to find that zepplin live version you were talking about. I love the album version, but over time, tools album cover has become my preferred version(over zepplin's album version). Its just more emotional and raw feeling than zepplin's(especially towards the end). It really is one of my favorite covers ever. Can you give me a link to that live version you mentioned(zepplin's). I'm getting goosebumps just reading your description of it. If it wasn't for tool covering this, Im not sure I ever would of listened to zepplin. And I am so glad I did. Its amazing how much influence I can here in tools music from zepplin(as well as other bands. Particularly pink floyd in tools later albums). They paved the way for so many great musicians of the 90s. Sadly, music hasn't evolved in the 2000, 2010s like i did every other decade. Just like tool took influence from zepplin, today's bands need to take influence from tool.
Jared Alford Today's bands take influence from each other cause they all sound the exact fucking same. I mean early 2000's kept the progressive rock alive but now its just terrible. And just youtube Led Zepplin No Quarter live I'm sure you'll find a half hr video of it.
A Tool fan I see. Looks like there's a lot of people who don't care for them too much commenting on this. I agree, it sounds like it could be a tool song anyway. I think they could have gone further with it, it's pretty similar to the original but I think it's cool that the riff is almost exactly the same. I forgot about the second half though. It's just tool at that stage.
Kariya M no it doesnt. tools is more powerful and spacey. where as leds is much more eerie and haunting. there is a stark difference between similar and 'too much like the original'. treat this as a homage, not a re-make.
@@SecksyMan I like Tool but I never understood why so many people think this version is somehow obviously better. I think they just like the heavier metal element.
I agree 100%...I think if A Perfect Circle did No Quarter it would've sounded better. Tool's music/sound is geared toward the grand standing of Maynard's vocals (not that there is anything wrong with that) and I feel APC has more of a balance between there music/sound and Maynard's vocals. But that's just me
@@SecksyMan They definitely did outdo them, the original no quarter didn't have the right sound to it. Although the live version from the song remains the same is much better, the studio version of no quarter doesn't hold up well imo as a tool and led zeppelin fanatic
Still remember the first time I heard this I was 16 and was just starting to smoke weed. I smoked and listened to this in a dark room and I’ve never been the same(in a good way.)
Bob Penney that’s so mind blowing, what a time to be alive man! p.s I’m chilling stoned to the bone listening to the best of the best! I will forever love the 60s and 70s | Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and many more bands that are literally the the Big Bang of life driven emotions!Live on brother! p.s.s. I’m only 18!
Unlike most covers, Tool elected to alter a few lyrics for their cover of “No Quarter”. With these changes, this song appears to be told from the perspective of the invaders (often theorized to be Vikings given the allusions to Thor and Ragnarok in the original), while the original was told from the perspective of the people being invaded.
The term "no quarter" refers to war times when enemy soldiers were taken captive. They were to be immediately executed or receive "no quarter" meaning no shelter, no food or water, no comforts of any kind. This song makes me think of that every time i hear it. Wicked!
I like this a lot more than I thought I would. It's such a heavy, psychedelic groove, you really can't fuck it up. TOOL is for real and they definitely know how to honor the original. Maybe people don't do this anymore but this music is meant to be cranked up LOUD, or it entirely misses the point. No, louder than that. Keep going. More still. That's it.
Hmmm, I'm 52 years old... I shouldn't be doing that. But I do. Not sure I've ever had a sound system in my car that was eventually blown out, usually from Tool. I'm just barely holding onto the fidelity in my current ride, Pneuma ain't helpin.
Lots of unnecessary negativity in these comments. I understand if you prefer the original over this, I myself also do. I am a massive TOOL fan, but Led Zeppelin's No Quarter is perhaps my fvourite song of all time, but that doesn't warrant people coming to a TOOL video, just to shit on something they've done. At least be respectful, it's music, and music is subjective. That being said, this is a great cover of an amazing song.
Exactly! It is an homage to and a celebration of the Tau of Zep, by Tool. It is a completely different piece of music, and that's fine! Ask yourself if Jimmy Page and Robert Plant would like it. I believe they would.
And alot of people don't know that many of the songs they Love by Led Zeppelin are actually songs they reworked and made their own by other artists. Just like tool did with this song. Zeppelin even said themselves if you're going to do a cover make it your own and tool definitely made this their own.
Love Led Zeppelin, but you cannot deny this beautiful masterpiece. If you have listened to this live, you are one lucky bastard. Tool forever and beyond ❤️
This takes me back to 1972 when I was 7. My older brothers took me to Zep Concert my parents thought we left to go the beach!! The days of NO cell phones no tracking device lol.
I went to my first Tool concert last Thursday, and it changed my life. I had taken some edibles before hand and cried the entire time. A truly amazing experience that I’ll be forever grateful for.
I do the same thing. I keep coming back to this song to get in "the zone" and vibe out. I just saw Tool for the first time in Milwaukee a few weeks ago and cried through the first four songs. Tears of joy... bucket list item. It was therapeutic.
Yo watch your vids all the time! Didnt know you were a tool fan! Hope this gets to you, would love to hear your thoughts on the band through your channel! Keep up the good work!
Why do people want songs on spotify? UA-cam has everything. Does a song become better once put on spotify? Serious question. I see a lot of people asking for that and I am confused
karanick016 greece a lot of people use Spotify just for their playlists. I basically have a rock/metal playlist and tool is unfortunately missing in it, even though it’s one of my favorite bands. It’s also easier to show someone a song on Spotify, since most people use it, has no ads, and the quality would be better than on UA-cam
Tool and Led Zeppelin are my two favorite bands...this song is unreal! And as much as I love the original, I think this is now my favorite version of the song
This ia the first song I've heard of tool, how i found it is kinda funny, in youtube search i typed "highest quality audiophile music" was looking something to test my car sound system, boiiii was I lucky to find this first on the search results. And had no fucking idea about what gold chest I've found It was strange and nothing like what I've heard before, some part of me didn't like it, the other didn't understand it, but something about it I liked and attracted me every time, I uncautiously knew that this is special and really difficult, high quality, class and hardq music (I was 15 or 16 years old, in Lithuania, blasting this amazing song in my small car my dad bought, one of those u can drive from 15yrs old with moped license, and we've put in a 15" subwoofer with a serious box, that occupied half of the car haha, ofcourse there was more to it, amps condencators serious mids and highs etc., my neighbours weren't too happy with their shaking windows haha) Now 21 and blasting tool songs every day, turned out a big fan, best of luck to u all, keep on listening to their masterpieces, peace
Is it just me or has there been a significant increase in views/comments recently for something that's been on here years? I love this song, I think it's not only one of the best all-time covers, but one of my fav Tool songs as well (and that is saying a lot as I LOVE Tool). I've watched this video so many times, and I'm happy to see more people appreciate it.
Chrysanne Brown I didn’t know this existed. I’m 57 and a life long LZ fan and this has always ranked up in my top ten fav LZ’s. This is awesome! I just happened to be looking at LZ stuff and saw this. Glad I listened 😎
UA-cam algorithms maybe. Last week I watched a video of Danny Carey at the Grammys saying, "All the great drum gods that came before, namely John Bonham, Tony Williams and my good friend Neil Peart". Can't be a coincidence that now Tool covering a Zeppelin song shows up in my recommended.
This song holds very deep for me. I came across this song during my mid 20s in a very vulnerable starting point in my life and identification. It’s also when my cat would lay in my lap and we’d meditate. RIP baby boy
Just saying alot of people like Zepplin. I used to,then I learned they ripped off alot of other musicians. So in reality, for me,they aren't that great. They're theives.
This is one of the best covers of all time IMO. Not only is this a great song in it's own right, it has the perfect balace of respect for the original material and character inserted by Tool.
TOOL's cover is very good, but Zepp's live song ("The song remains the same" version) is amazing. Page's solo is from another planet. But I repeat, the cover is great.
My mom met Maynard eating breakfast at the Grand Hotel in Jerome,AZ. They had a nice chat about the local artists and sights to see. She told us about it in the car later and was totally surprised to find out that nice man was a mega rock star.
Too many haters when reading these comments. Where is the love of the music itself? John Bonham or Danny Carey? Maynard James Keenan or Robert Plant? Damn....I'm sure this cover was done out of respect. I'm also sure that Led Zeppelin would be honored to cover a TOOL song if the timeline was flipped. CHEERS! Fucking awesome cover!
I grew up listening to Zep and I have to say Tool did a great cover. The best to cover Zeppelin by far is Heart. listen to their version of Battle for Evermore and Rock n Roll. Ann Wilson can bring it!
gotta agree w/you...this IS F in awesome & I'm an old (59 yrs baby!) die hard Zep fan...God knows They ripped off enough old tunes" to make their own sound back in the day...like M.Manson says..I hate the haters!!!!
Indeed .this cover is legendary..you can tell tool is saying hats off to the classic rock n roll Kings in this...cause this epic peice would not even been thought of if not for led Zeppelin bringing to life such a dream like song!!
My 7yo daughter hearing this for the first time. 1:00 "When are they going to sing?" - "It's not normal radio music, they take a while to sing" 2:32 "He doesn't have a very good voice" - "Its just an effect over his voice, its not how his normal voice sounds" 3:21 "I take that back dad, he does have a good voice" - "Yes he does darling, yes he does!"

@@bradsmith4279 Same, I love the fact that one minute we'll be listening to ultra pop (lady gaga), next will be Chevelle or Tool, then John Denver and while they don't love it all, they are starting to appreciate that radio music is not the be all and end all!

Knocked my socks off!! I was a LED-HEAD in the 70s and listened to TOOL in the latter days. I never thought one of my favorite ZEP tunes would be re-TOOL-ed so exquisitely. Thank you ZEP, TOOL and for this post.
Jesus fucking Christ. Not only have they done a faithful rendition, they have taken it deeper, sadder, higher. The ending was unexpected. I was a bit too drunk the other night to really appreciate this, but I listened to every moment this evening and savored it, somewhat less drunk. Fuck me, this band are geniuses. I know they have a big following. I know they are held in high regard. But really, I'm not a fan, until now. I'm going to look far back in to this band's catalog. Sometimes great music just passes you by. But really, what a fucking masterpiece this song was. And great visuals with the video as well, it only added to the experience. Thank you.
Probably the only band that deserves and owns the honor of covering a Led Zeppelin song of this magnitude. Tool demonstrated to have the genius to take the Led Zeppelin masterpiece into our times and the respect of rearranging it not with the arrogance of "improving it" but to emphasize the ideas that made the original so great and timeless. Plus making the song their own, in complete honesty and yet never withdrawing from their own achieved artistry.
Came back to listen again after a few months, always enjoy reading the latest comments. It's awesome that somewhere out the in the world someone is listening to this probably right now and I'm having the same experience.
Being Led Zep and a Tool fan I absolutely love this version. No quarter is my favourite song of LZ, particularly the live version. I love how tool made it their own, rather than trying to play it like LZ. I can’t believe I haven’t heard it before now.
I totally agree, Ryan. I've been a Led Zep fan for 47 years and I've only just discovered Tool for myself. 47 years apart. And I'm totally astonished by Tool's music. THE DEVIL MADE THEM DO IT !
This song by zeppelin has ALWAYS been my favorite and it's extremely under rated.
Driving in the rain at night to this is so euphoric.
Sarfaraaz Khan I hate to clue you in on this but: people are retarded
Homage
I wish everybody felt this way. Every day it's always a list of top five, or this was better than that...
It's fucking mind numbing.
Probably one of the best covers I’ve ever heard. The way they incorporate their style to it is perfect.
lyrics
Lock the door, kill the light.
No one's coming home tonight.
The sun beats down and don't you know?
All our lives are growing cold, oh...
They bring news that must get through.
To build a dream for me and you, oh.
Locked in a place where no one goes.
They ask no quarter
They have no quarter.
Lock the door, kill the light
No one's coming home tonight
It's getting colder (7x)
Locked in a place where no one goes.
Lock the door, kill the light
No one's coming home tonight
They bring news that must get through.
Dying peace in me and you
Locked in a place where no one goes.
We have no quarter
We have no quarter
We ask no quarter

Ca va? Da Vi!!!
Thank you 👍
The best version of this song is when Zeppelin themselves played it live.
It’s a reinterpretation, not a cover. No reason to compare. No Quarter was almost made to fit Tool’s sound, I’m glad they made this in their own way.
👊
A Tool fan I see. Looks like there's a lot of people who don't care for them too much commenting on this.
I agree, it sounds like it could be a tool song anyway. I think they could have gone further with it, it's pretty similar to the original but I think it's cool that the riff is almost exactly the same.
I forgot about the second half though. It's just tool at that stage.
Thats what a cover usually is, or should be. This one actually sounds like too much like the original.
Kariya M no it doesnt. tools is more powerful and spacey. where as leds is much more eerie and haunting. there is a stark difference between similar and 'too much like the original'. treat this as a homage, not a re-make.
Zep's original version is like the introduction to drugs. This feels like years down the road, hitting rock bottom and feinding for your next hit.
Do you do drugs?
Biggest zeppelin fan on earth. This is the beat cover I've ever heard.
one of the best covers of all time
No one can outdo Led Zeppelin
Tool: Hold my third eye
😂😂😂
They didnt outdo Led Zeppelin. Not even close.
This is how you do a cover, making it your own with being true to your style. Not copying someone.
Still remember the first time I heard this I was 16 and was just starting to smoke weed. I smoked and listened to this in a dark room and I’ve never been the same(in a good way.)
I am 45 year's old and I have been to ALOT of concerts. I saw Tool live FINALLY last year and it was a life changing experience.
I turned 40 in december. Been to my share of concerts. Saw Tool for the 1st time as they kicked off Fear Inoculum in September. Worth every Penny!!!
EDIT: October in Denver
I first saw Tool- Christchurch NZ 1997 ❤️ Great memories
Same age as you, but I was 24 the first time.
The people need this on spotify

One of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs, covered by my favorite band
This is musical genius. The time it must have took to recreate…. It is so intricate. Will forever be one of my favorite songs
I love how Tool made a cover without sounding even a little bit like Zeppelin, made it their own thing. An absolutely amazing tune
No Quarter always sounded kind of like a pre-historic Tool song all along. It fits Tool like a glove!
Wicked!
If Tool drops another album the corona virus will leave us alone

Tool's version is fine by me. It is a homage to the Zep, and a rather good one at that.
Hello, how are you doing? It is nice seeing you here.

I need this on Spotify
it would go on my tool playlist and be the reason why my hours listen on tool would double on my 2024 wrapped lmao
They opened with this in Toronto in '94. Maynard intro'ed the song by saying, 'For those of you under 20, we wrote this song for you.'
Tool didn't write this song.
@@justinespi4551 No, they did. Led Zeppelin just time traveled to make it first.

i bought a ticket to the concert of my all time favorite band today.. i'm so excited to live in the same era as TOOL and experiencing them
I went to my first Tool concert last Thursday, and it changed my life. I had taken some edibles before hand and cried the entire time. A truly amazing experience that I’ll be forever grateful for.
@robertgrant2934 godspeed brother!
At least a couple of times a month I like to listen to this song, space out and dream of what has passed, and what lies ahead for me.
Well said
I do the same thing. I keep coming back to this song to get in "the zone" and vibe out. I just saw Tool for the first time in Milwaukee a few weeks ago and cried through the first four songs. Tears of joy... bucket list item. It was therapeutic.
I was pissed I didn't get to see them in Milwaukee. Next time and hopefully some new material is out 😏😏@@bryanmatkin5497

Your freaking telling me😡😡😡
Use SoundCloud for Tool
@AgentOfOblivion Exactly that's what i do and rip them onto my ipod. Its not that complicated plus their albums are pretty cheap on Amazon.
This is a pure psychedelic experience.
Tool and Led Zeppelin are my two favorite bands...this song is unreal! And as much as I love the original, I think this is now my favorite version of the song
For sure .
Well said Gabriel J, I was just thinking the same thing...
This ia the first song I've heard of tool, how i found it is kinda funny, in youtube search i typed "highest quality audiophile music" was looking something to test my car sound system, boiiii was I lucky to find this first on the search results. And had no fucking idea about what gold chest I've found
It was strange and nothing like what I've heard before, some part of me didn't like it, the other didn't understand it, but something about it I liked and attracted me every time, I uncautiously knew that this is special and really difficult, high quality, class and hardq music
(I was 15 or 16 years old, in Lithuania, blasting this amazing song in my small car my dad bought, one of those u can drive from 15yrs old with moped license, and we've put in a 15" subwoofer with a serious box, that occupied half of the car haha, ofcourse there was more to it, amps condencators serious mids and highs etc., my neighbours weren't too happy with their shaking windows haha)
Now 21 and blasting tool songs every day, turned out a big fan, best of luck to u all, keep on listening to their masterpieces, peace
You probably already know about his other bands, but if you don't: A Perfect Circle, Puscifer. Also check out Tool's cover of Demon Cleaner!

I think it's because alot of youtuber 's are reviewing it and Tool has more fans than ever with the release of their new album.
This moves me in an incredibly emotional way that I can't quite explain 🌀
This song holds very deep for me. I came across this song during my mid 20s in a very vulnerable starting point in my life and identification. It’s also when my cat would lay in my lap and we’d meditate. RIP baby boy

As someone who loves tool and led Zeppelin. This is literally perfect!!!
There's no way anybody can make a Zeppelin cover that's better than Zeppelin, yet here it is. Amazing stuff.
Agree
Uh,how about the numeous people Zepplin stole music from?
@@MailmanWilly79 What about them?
Just saying alot of people like Zepplin. I used to,then I learned they ripped off alot of other musicians. So in reality, for me,they aren't that great. They're theives.
That's the way it goes. It's only rock and roll. You take what you hear and you make it your own. Problems arise only when someone suddenly cares.
The best cover is year Mum on me face.
My mom met Maynard eating breakfast at the Grand Hotel in Jerome,AZ. They had a nice chat about the local artists and sights to see.
She told us about it in the car later and was totally surprised to find out that nice man was a mega rock star.
Did she mention what Maynard ordered for breakfast..?
Too many haters when reading these comments. Where is the love of the music itself? John Bonham or Danny Carey? Maynard James Keenan or Robert Plant? Damn....I'm sure this cover was done out of respect. I'm also sure that Led Zeppelin would be honored to cover a TOOL song if the timeline was flipped. CHEERS! Fucking awesome cover!
Daniel La Salle i totally agree! Fucking bad ass as hell!
I grew up listening to Zep and I have to say Tool did a great cover. The best to cover Zeppelin by far is Heart. listen to their version of Battle for Evermore and Rock n Roll. Ann Wilson can bring it!

Thank you.
Definitely check out Schism, it's preformed quite beautifully
You're in for quite the journey.
