I always saw the lyrics describing a revenge kind of story. Like the victim escapes the abuser only to return and take revenge by doing the same things to the abuser that were done to the victim. Either way, they are very strong lyrics.
You just changed the song completely for me... I guess that's what's so good about music, two people can interpret different things, see the exact same song differently and neither are wrong or right
I moreso see them as describing an endless cycle of violence: the abuser does something horrible to their victim, their victim is mentally broken and now the only way they feel whole and alive again is by doing the same thing to someone else, thus becoming the new abuser. I could also see it as a criticism of the judicial system, prisons specifically, as nine times out of ten, when a bad person goes to prison, when they come out, they're just so much worse.

I was sexually abused last year by a "friend", the first days after what happened were hell for me, I had to go to the police station almost every day, I will never forget the painful injections they gave me in the hospital and that made me cry, the fear of eating because the pills I was taking were very strong for me, for 7 months the relationship with my mother was based on lies because I did not want to worry her, the scar on my left wrist is still visible reminding me that if I'm still alive it's because I shouldn't die that way.
When I heard this song I obviously remembered everything that happened that night, however, something unusual was that in a way it did not affect me in a bad way, in fact, quite the contrary.
I mean: I interpret the song as the victim is now the executioner, making his/her aggressor pay for all the damage that s/he has done to him/her.
Whether through justice or my own hand, I will make that motherfucker who tried to ruin my life "look so precious now."

While I have not experienced sexual abuse personally, I am close to someone who has and I can tell you that it can be a very tough thing to move past, especially when you were very young and the people you should have been able to rely on for help simply looked the other way as though it’s a rite of passage to let the uncle have his way. In some perverse way of thinking, it’s somehow easier to turn a blind eye to the offender and pretend it didn’t happen.

This song IMO is about a young boy being raped by a man. Then he grows up only to repeat the cycle and predate another young boy. The title prison sex seems to place it in the setting of raping a rapist in prison. But the lyrics tell a different story.

Sober put me on notice, but this song is the one that made me realize how talented Tool was a band.
Because I don't care if it's dubbed metal or not, this song to me always spoke to me of blues and funk roots.
When I read that Danny Carey was trained as a jazz drummer it cemented my assessment.
I know blues and funk when I hear it. Blues is a precursor to jazz and jazz is precursor to funk

I remember my Mom took me to get a tape. Yes. Cassette tape. I'm 44. I picked Undertow. I heard Opiate before and really liked it so I was psyched to hear Undertow. Totally blew me away. I heard Prison Sex for the first time on the way back from the record store. My mom heard the bridge "I have found some kind of temporary insanity in this" " Shit, blood and cum on my hands". She looked over at me and said "what is this?". I said a new band called TOOL. She was like "I don't know if I want you listening to this". I said "Mom, they're singing about a dude getting raped in prison." Real shit that actually happens. Not fairy tale shit about falling in love." Plus I couldn't get over how great they sounded lyrically & musically. My mom said she liked the singer. I said "yea hes really good. I hope they make more music. They did and still are making music that keeps my mind stimulated while relating to all of the lyrics in some way. Can't really say that for any other current band. I tried to listen to newer music the last few years but I just can't get into it. But I will always listen to TOOL, go to their shows and be excited for anything they put out.
