Lyrics:
There's a shadow just behind me
Shrouding every step I take
Making every promise empty
Pointing every finger at me
Waiting like a stalking butler
Who upon the finger rests
Murder now the path of must we
Just because the son has come
Jesus, won't you fucking whistle
Something but the past and done?
Jesus, won't you fucking whistle
Something but the past and done?
Why can't we not be sober?
Just want to start this over
And why can't we drink forever?
I just want to start this over
I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well
I will find a center in you
I will chew it up and leave
I will work to elevate you
Just enough to bring you down
Mother Mary, won't you whisper?
Something but what's past and done
Mother Mary, won't you whisper?
Something but the past and done
Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start this over
And why can't we sleep forever?
I just want to start this over
Why?
I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well
I will find a center in you
I will chew it up and leave
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start things over
And why can't we sleep forever?

Why?
I want what I want
I want what I want
I want what I want
I want what I want

I just discovered Tool, I can't really understand why they sound so unique and emotional. Every riff I listen in one their songs sounds so much different than everything I ever heard before. When I listened to Pneuma I thought that it was their masterpiece and probably the other songs wouldn't be at this level, but oh boy.
Progressive Metal is the genre Tool falls within; it is known for breaking traditional music structure and Tool is a phenomenal Prog Metal Band
Tool does things like having instruments fall in and out of alignment with each other alongside myriad other cool things that are 1, difficult to compose, 2 hellishly difficult to perform live properly due to their complexity, and 3; require an immense ability to compose, write, and perform music to get to sound so amazing

This song hits different when you deal with depression, and not drug addiction. I’ve had days where I wish I’d sleep forever ( like the song says) and that no one would care if I died.
A few times I thought about hanging myself or slitting my throat or overdosing on pills.
But I’ve stayed firm in staying alive, I know that if I don’t feel understood that I should make an effort to be understood and liked.
I can’t be quiet and expect people to listen to me. I need to be vocal. That’s why I have been more talkative an open.
Having autism does things to you, like having people not get you and make fun of you. Which is why I am depressed and could relapse into suicide.

I think of this song when I think of addiction. There's a desperation to the melody and lyrics that capture the emotion perfectly. "Mother Mary, won't you whisper?" Whoever's asking the question is screaming out to the divine for help. It ends with obsessive circular thinking: "I want what I want." It's a very powerful and meaningful song without being bloated and contrived, unlike some of Tool's later songs.
