There's currently support for 70% of all missing subclasses from DnD, there's also a good chunk of missing spells from 5E added, so far these types of mods feel so natural in the game, like they were supposed to be in the game from the start, it's fascinating, some very specific assests needed for some very specific subclasses are also coincidentally there in the game, like the giantification effect needed for Rune Knight and Path of the Giant, bug swarms for Swarmkeeper, genie stuff for Genie patron Warlock etc., I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional, Larian are known for loving the modding community

But I can't be the only one who wants more stories, not so long or detailed perhaps, but more stories.
Take a look at Factorio. The base game has always been mod friendly. Smaller mods added extra this or that, or Qol features. But then some fanatic modders made complete game overhaul mods, creating new adventures. Some of those modders have now been taken onboard as official Devs for the new Factorio 2 and DLC.
Look at City Skylines or TPF2 these games only exist because of the modders who built onto the base game.
That is what I am hoping for. A little DLC from modders, exploring Halsins history or Astarions or... etc.

While I respect their grind, this also means that BG3, like MANY other games we like to shit on, came out as a "much" poorer product on launch. Many of the things they added felt really needed in my run. Not like actual DLC where I can come back and replay it, but parts of the quality of life, mechanics or story that were just missing. And while I really loved my time with my campaign, there were some actual flaws and gripes (some of them now fixed) that marred my experience with the game. Sure, I really should always buy games 1 year after they are out. That's usually my policy, but with the rave reviews and the kind of game it is, I expected it to be completely and completely functionnal. It wasn't.

I feel like BG3 is the first example in a video game of the phrase "too much of a good thing can be bad." This game is so well done and so amazing that I'm just not ready for it to be over in the sense of I've been wanting there to be entirely other stories branching off the main quest. I'm honestly filled with a degree of hope for the future of gaming. Bg 3 was loudly and widely praised for everything it did, rightly so. And it sold very well, and won a lot of awards. So I'm quite excited to see how fantasy gaming tries to recreate or pay homage to bg 3. And that the general standard for gaming, writing, characters, story, combat etc, have all been permanently raised. We deserve games of quality, and let's continue to speak with our wallets and social media. This game finally got me into dnd, and now I'm hungry for more, even from other studios, even if it can't live up to the same quality as no team comes close to Larion. The fact that Larian had talked about doing BG4 and DLC makes me believe that this was an internal issue prob over money with Hasbro. It’s no secret that WOTC and Hasbro have been bleeding money lately so them trying to renegotiate with Larian to get more money after BG3’s success wouldn’t be surprising. Though it’s disappointing I am happy for Larian and can’t wait for their next project and who knows, maybe if Hasbro gets bought out Larian could swoop in and negotiate for the Video game rights for DOD or just BG.

It's probably a problem with Hasbro. They and WoTC are in a state of collapse and they bemoaned the fact that they were only able to get 90 million out of the game due to contract. I would bet they offered a contract for DLC and/or a sequel and wanted the lion's share of the profits. I have no positive feelings about any follow-up that comes out of them having the rights. I kind of imagine it being the opposite of destiny. bungie wanted to make a fantasy game- but knowing that their skills sat very heavily in shooting and sci fi, they decdid on a sort of mix as a "high" sci fi as i have come to call it (idk if that term is already used, it just became the easiest way i could explain destinys setting to people who have never seen it lol). I think Larian could really excel in the sci fi space, if thats what they are actually considering. Mass effect already proved these types of rpg elements could easily transalte over into the genre... and man imagining "mass effect, but better" gets me very excited, as that was my first rpg series. honestly thinking back to destiny, mixing in high fantasy tropes like they did could create an amazing world in larians hands... more of what i actually had hoped destiny was going to be, actually.

I do agree - but at the same time, this might be the best path toward a renaissance in the CRPG genre.
Larian will continue doing amazing things in the genre, so we're not really losing out overall.
Meanwhile, the legacy and value of BG3 creates a new opportunity to another studio which did not exist in the CRPG genre before: the chance to leap ahead in sales and brand value, and the pressure to either get it right or avoid the IP altogether.
For now, I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic about the impact of Larian Studios - and that goes not only for BG3 but also for their decision to focus elsewhere than the Forgotten Realms for now.

@@Aedrion-Wizards of the Coast own the Dungeons and Dragons IP, and Hazbro owns WOTC.
They attempted to change an agreement they've had with the community for decades *right* before they released the DnD movie. The change had the potential to cause many companies that created 3rd party material for DnD go broke, or struggle to break even, and so caused an incredible response from the community. Their was a push to mass unsubscribe from their digital toolset, and it was so successful that they decided to put the core rules of 5th edition DnD (which is what BG3 was based off) into Creative Commons.
However, enough fans of the game jumped to other TTRPGs that the movie brought in far less money that Hasbro was banking on, and they've been clawing to get their reputation back ever since.

    • @Zaxares
      @Zaxares 6 місяців тому +7

To add to what Crimson Witch said, WotC also went through a recent mass layoff. I suspect that when Swen made his remarks at the GDA awards criticizing companies who lay off employees at times when they're making large profits, and losing a lot of institutional knowledge in the process, this is what he was referring to. Supposedly out of the entire WotC team that Larian worked and liaised with when they were making BG3, not a single one remains employed at WotC. So yeah, the mood and working relationship between the companies now must feel very different.
There's also rumours (but these are unconfirmed) that Hasbro/WotC was heavily leaning on Larian to add in things like microtransactions to BG3, which I think we can all agree would be absolute red lines. So given all of the above, I think Swen wisely decided to cast off rather than stay and potentially be forced to engage in unsavory practices that they always stood against.

It sounds like they are working within the bounds of their contract relating to the IP. They cannot create new content, just work within the original bounds. It sounds to me like it is a matter of money and a new contract. Larian is in a strong bargaining position, and there could be another Baldur's Gate game from them if the price is right. They are just not pursuing it publicly. They are setting their sights on another project until WotC pays them what they deserve to make another game. WotC could save money by going with a different developer and make a bad follow up. I do not have high hopes for WotC to make the financially sound decision to let Larian take the helm again. It was fun while it lasted though. Swen talked about the sound engineers recording ice at night, so clearly the next game is an NHL licensed hockey game.

Hopefully with mod support, modders will be able to do what they did with Skyrim and add in new locations and stories as DLC, maybe set in Avernus, or the Astral Plane, etc... we'll have to see how expansive the modding tools are, because Sven did say they aren't a tools company. Larian's next RPG will not be the big one. He said they don't have the tech to create it, nor do they know the specs for the next generation of console, so this coming RPG will be a building block towards it.

@@Lonewanderer30 there are no areas missing from the city. you surely didnt expect them to put the entirety of baldurs gate into a video game, right? that place is bigger than many real cities. and the avernus hub wasnt meant to be a hint to future dlc, it was literally just an area designed to show how raphael gets around. the game is finished. any dlc would have been an addition to a complete game (as dlc should be btw). them not making dlc doesnt make the game abandoned, its a finished game they arent adding more to. abandonment would be releasing a half finished game and doing nothing with it, not releasing a finished game, tweaking things based on feedback, and then continuing to give bug support until its no longer needed

Regardless, all the characters , playable and non-playable, were so well done with such care for authenticity. It just reiterates again, the difference of approach to developers who make characters and developers, who make NPCs . For me, that difference is very striking .
