A gaming CEO that knows 99% of his game, wow. Not to mention, one that is empathic. Dude is super inspirational and very rare.
I actually think it's much more common than you think. Just look at Remedy, Larian, Fromsoft, Nintendo, Kojima etc. There are a lot of really really good and passionate devs out there. Especially outside of the US.
I actually think there are a lot of similarly minded people in Western development, but they're stuck under the yolk of greedy corporate shareholders who only care about the bottom line. Larian literally went indie (which is super risky) to escape that corporate pressure. Hopefully more creative teams will follow suit.
@@gatorarman12 I don't think Nintendo really applies here im ngl..
@@yveltalsea Mario Wonder, both of the recent Zelda games, Pikman, etc. Nintendo’s got plenty of passion and care behind their games and pretty much always delivers polished entries in their core franchises. And they have general innovation with console design (Wii and Switch). Some of their business practices aren’t great for consumers (but make sense for their own business since they are hardware sales dependent and make a profit from console sales unlike Sony/Xbox). I’ve also never seen them stuff their games with microtransactions 🤷🏻♂️
@@gatorarman12 Pikmin is made by a subsidiary developer, not Nintendo. The recent Zelda game was poorly written, with some of the worst repetitive quest dialogue I've ever seen in a game, and was basically a copy of BotW with some new mechanics that arent really necessary in most of the game.
BotW was revolutionary and really changed the market but definitely not TotK. The amount of reused assets in the sky area was abysmal, and the underground exploration was some of the laziest level design I've ever seen.
And they don't really care about a lot of their playerbase given the state of Mario Kart 8 online servers lol.
Pikmin is definitely the exception, but like I said, it's a different company. Plus a company who cares about their players wouldnt ban tournaments for their games like Smash, and take down videos of people playing their games. Like other companies, Nintendo is just as greedy.
There is no way anyone can compare a company like Nintendo to a company like Larian. Larian is on a different level.
Definitely. He’s leading from the front.
The moment a “leader” removes themselves from the front lines, things fall apart
"One really big RPG to dwarf them all" This man is having great future plans. Love it.
He talked about making this his ultimate goal at least since 2010.
I know it because I was a follower on his personal blog back then and he always said this was the dream he was chasing.
I'm so excited for it. Maybe it is a mistake to get this hyped for something that hasn't come out yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Before we get excited for "One really big RPG to dwarf them all" we have to remember that the new Larian game, whenever it comes out isn't going to be the biggest RPG because the tech hasn't been invented, that is coming later. This new game is going to be the first step
DnD Multiverse!
possibly an rpg set in LOTR, "One RPG To Dwarf Them All" could be a sneaky reference to "One Ring To Rule Them All".
It’s so refreshing hearing someone who clearly has a lot of passion for their industry.
He clearly loves games and respects the medium. It’s rare to see these days.
Hearing from actual developers and not producers or publishers (or devs being forced to speak for events) is always the best and is pretty vital for inspiring and teaching everyone else dreaming.
It's really not that rare. There are tons of indie developers out there who care about the medium. It's just rare for a game as big and mainstream as BG3.
@@mightyNosewings To piggy back off of that comment, there are actually plenty of big game devs that have that passion. Remedy, FromSoft, Nintendo, Kojima all come to mind. There's still a lot of passion in the industry. But a lot of it gets stifled by the greed of the shareholders.
@@gatorarman12On a similar note, tons of people working for the big soulless AAA studios are passionate. It's just that these big games are basically made by committee, so it doesn't really matter if the *individuals* working on them are passionate. As always, the problems have to do with structures and systems.
Props to Swen not just for making an incredible game but for being an incredible human! Mad respect for getting his people out of the Russia/Ukraine warzone and helping them land on their feet
Yes I was impressed when he talked about this
I'm also impressed on how expressive he, the studio, and the cast have taken on some high and important political issues. IDK whether you agree with them or not, but I admire that they are willing to stand for what they believe in, instead of staying neutral.
@@invisibleacropolis8195 I can think of some things that could give them a run for their money in the next couple years, though not likely with the same level of choices. The number of choices is what made BG3 shine the most. The things im thinking of would break other gaming industry boundaries to get attention. That is if they do well and do it right, still too early to say for sure so not naming what im thinking of. But the possibilities are out there if you look beyond the corporate shareholder ran studios.
Agree 100% the world needs more people like him.
The thing that hurts most about this news is knowing we most likely won’t see the characters from bg3 again.
I won't be able to survive this life without shadowheart
I'm sure what they'll bring again will be fresh don't worry about it you'll get over it guys xD
I like a definitive story. My tav rode off into the sunset to start a revolution with his alien frog girlfriend and raise his adopted alien frog son. That’s a happy ending in my book 😎
Not necessarily, Jaheira and minsc came back after bg 1&2, 20-25 yrs later (for us, it’s like 100~yrs in game). Shadowhear, at least, can live long enough. Astarion too since he’s nigh immortal.
Eh I imagine you probably would.
A) We have much older characters from previous games in 3.
B) It’s an extremely easy way to receive fanfare by utilising characters from one of the largest gaming hits in the past decade.
This is what a real company family looks like. Too many companies throw the word around "family" without doing the work. Bravo Larian and Swen Vinke.
"what was the biggest challenge during development?"
Swen: helping to get my team out of Russia when the war started, making sure they were safe and that the transition to a new location went as comfortably as possible.
@@Phnx327 Exactly. I've never heard of companies doing this for their employees.
My thoughts exactly, worked in a huge company a few years ago, they called themselves a "family", it wasn't even remotely close to what the word "family" means.

I'm not a gamer, and when BG3 came out, my husband was in the process of getting me into DnD. He asked me if I wanted to play with him, because he thought it's a bit easier to digest than the actual tabletop game. I totally fell in love and eventually started playing on my own and only recently finished my first playthrough all by myself. Once again, I'm not a gamer so this was a big deal for me 😂.....I've been craving some good fantasy for quite some time now. Especially after the huge disappointment of Netflix's The Witcher and Amazon's Rings Of Power. BG3 filled that hole and I'm super grateful for that. Super gutted there won't be a BG4 by Larian 😢
Its so Easy to Fell in love to Baldurs Gate3 because its pure love in its own
Zero need to be a gamer to enjoy a game such as this.
Baldurs gate 3 is a master class in rpg gaming beats anything Bethesda has put out in years
Wow comparing two different game types. I’d still rather Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Just one of these compared to BG3.
It beats literally everything Bethesda has put out since Morrowind.
@@chrisj320ac3correct opinion.
It beats anything Bethesda has ever put out. And yes - that includes morrowind.
Are you new to the gaming? When skyrim and oblivion came there were nothing like those. They inspired most of the open world games including witcher, zelda and elden ring. They created openworld rpg genre. I am quite sure even lots of devs at Larian are influenced by those.
It's understandable. But it HURTS. We're never going to see another game quite like this for DnD. And the fact we're never going to see these characters again breaks my heart.
That's not necessarily the case. Another studio could make BG4 and they might use some or all of the characters, just like Larian used Minsc and Jaheira.
Not to mention that just because Larians next project is not D&D that doesn't mean that they will never make another D&D game ever again. Doesn't even have to be Baldur's Gate, could also be Neverwinter Nights or Icewind Dale or even a Ravenloft or Dragonlance game.
@@HH-hd7nd hoping they do Icewind Dale, the setting is SO FCKING AWESOME, some kind of grimdark frost adventure.
@@SUPERMavicMy favourite would actually be either Neverwinter Nights or Dragonlance.
@@HH-hd7ndAnd if a 4th installment comes out, it will be a disappointment. I don't see any studio that is able to put the same amount of hard work and integrity right now.
@@ghallium-jvThat's absolutely possible.
However - a lot depends on the marketing.
People's dissapointment is oftentimes a consequence o false expectations. If the marketing of a potential BG4 shows what the game really is instead of selling it as "the BG3 successor" it could work.
A game doesn't have to be of the same scale as BG3 to be good.
I have such an immense of respect for Swen and Larian. I really hope they never sell to anyone else like Microsoft or Sony like Blizzard did. As an artist, if there was any dev company I could work for it'd be Larian. I really love Swen's take on game development and how to respect players. What an amazing interview!
Blizzard already sold out well before the Microsoft acquisition. If larian end up selling out like Blizzard, it means they made a few thousand or so horrendous mistakes WELLLLL before😅
@@queueeeee9000 Indeed
My favorite interview with Swen. Great questions! And my respect for the guy went up... yet again. He's one of the GOATs of the current gaming industry.
"one of the GOATs of the current industry" why don't you use "greatest" instead of GOAT, since you don't seem to understand what it means.
Can Larian Studios please be given the keys to KOTOR now? Sven can give updates with everyone dressed as sith and Jedi too! 🎉🎉
Give them Star Wars pleaseeeeee
Please don't. Disney will butcher Larian for fun and leave nothing behind. Disney is an evil company.
Man I love BG3, but I don’t want to explode barrels in KOTOR.
I thought this was a good idea as well
@armanghazaryan5353 no one makes you explode barrels in BG3
whoa that was GREAT and you should have WAY more interviews like that. key points: 1. it's high quality. not a skype interview, it's in-person. 2. you let the interviewee talk about anything they want. 3. they represent an interesting game or franchise that has popular appeal to gamers and is a game community darling. 4. they don't just talk about what's next for the game or whatever but talk about irl events, grown up stuff, we're gamers but we're also human beings and we don't JUST want to hear about your next battle pass alllllllllllll the time. the fact he touched on the war, how it affected his team, etc, that was really refreshing to hear and it was very much a good part of the interview. have people talk about irl stuff, not just gamey gamer stuff
if you make more interviews like that happen i will watch those videos very often.
What a wonderful interview with a great guy. I have so much respect for the relocation of the team members that needed help. This team is a shining light in games development.
What an excellent interview. Swen always exudes excitement when speaking about video games. The anecdote about doing whatever it took to move those parts of his development team affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine shows a level of humanity which very few major game studios possess today (as illustrated by the massive industry downsizing). I've played about every game his studio has developed and have never been disappointed. From the public facing events Larian does and the delivered quality of games they develop, Swen has got to rank among the best bosses in the world. Thanks so much for moderating this interview Tam.
I came across Larian by coincidence with Divinity 1 and have been a fan of the studio ever since. They remind me of better days when every few years, a little known creative company would come out with a fantastic title. I do hope it's coming back into fashion.
I love bg3, but i like that they are doing something new, keeps thing fresh.
what a hero. the last of his kind. a game developer who cares more for the quality of his games than he does for monetisation and profit. the truth is quality, and giving gamers what they want, equals profit!!
Best game dev interview ive watched so far. They prioritize more for game quality and community feedback rather than profit, money, and numberss. Cant wait to see what the future holds for themmm
I hope that their next project is an original IP so they can keep all their money.
divinity 3? im starting the interview right now, idk if he says something about it
@@camilofacio7820 Probably Original Sin 3. Not sure Divinity 3 would be the correct call to tackle right now
Sven is such a wholesome dude. Dare I say example for leadership in the gaming industry...
As someone who really enjoyed BG3, I'm a bit saddened that we won't be getting an expansion or a sequel. But if it means we will be getting more RPGs just as good if not better than BG3 from them in the future, then I'm all for it.
Larian got ALOT of attention with BG3. I imagine some huge franchises and licenses are vying for their attention now. Excited to see what they come up with next, just please don’t stray far from your roots like BioWare.
I want to see a proper World of Darkness CRPG.
@@BrokenNoah I would love to see them do Bloodlines 2.
@@BrokenNoahYeah no. Larian's greatest strength is about designing combat (level design, encounters, etc). The World of Darkness franchise is normally extremely roleplay-oriented.
Bloodlines was really not representative of how the actual game was played on tabletop.
@@Ezullof Or so you say
@@EzullofThat is not true as a general statement for all WoD games. Vampire is focused more on politics and intrigue than combat, but that is not the case for Werewolf or Hunter. Especially Werewolf is all about combat because that's what the Garou are: Warriors of Gaia.
Don't forget that WoD is a lot more than just Vampire. Vampire, Werewolf, Hunter, Demon, Changeling, Mummy, Mage and Wraith all offer their very unique style - even within Vampire because a Vampire: The Masquerade campaign is not exactly the same as a Vampire: Dark Ages campaign.
Give them the Dragon Age IP.
Wait dread wolf might be good. It still had the writers on for most of development.
YES 🙌
@@h.walker1332 I really want to believe this so much. I'm addicted to the copium.
Give them the Deus Ex IP would be better from my perspective. It would be something different for them.
I heard they're making Dread Wolf more like God of War and less like an RPG. Doesn't sound good.@@h.walker1332
Imagine if Larian made an isometric turn based Fallout game. I bet it would become the most adored Fallout of all time.
Most people don't make isometric RPGs any more. Pillars of Eternity was, but most are true 3d now like BG 3.
I’d pick it up for every system in the house. That’s an awesome suggestion
Inxile can do that better. larian should do a shadowrun game
@@Steve-xh3byOwlcat Games also makes isometric games (Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous). Both games are pretty good btw.
Their latest release is Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader btw, another isometric game.
Imagine if Larian made any game ever
"I went on vacation and played [Vampire Survivors] the entire time." He's truly one of us.
Great interview. Wow, I’m so impressed by Swen. Also, the guy interviewing him is really good!
Swen and the team at Larian are living legends... Cant wait to see what they come out with next...
Such a humble and honest guy, he's the exact opposite of current megacorp status quo in the industry, I wish them more success as a role model for more devs to follow suit.
I love that mindset of creating something that reminds you of what made you fall in love with games. That feeling is exactly what Baldur's Gate 3 has given me: a feeling that I had last experienced when I first played World of Warcraft around 2006.
Thank you for being the wonderful man that you are Swen
Not taking up BG4 was clever move by Larian studios. Nothing in BG4 could have surpassed BG3.They would just be setting themselves up for disappointment as expectations would be impossibly high that they are better off avoiding the stress and have a fresh start with a new IP. DLC was never realistic considering all different choices made throughout a playthrough making it extremely difficult to tie into a new story expansion. BG3 does not need expansion. Despite problems with the third act, particularly the abrupt ending, BG3 is one of the best games of all time and a stark contrast with the current trends of gaming. I look forward to their next project. Praying that its a detective game similar to LA.Noire. It would fit well with Larian's game design.
Nothing would have surpassed BG3? 😂 Well aren't you just a prime example of oozing out imagination 🥸
They're ambitious, a detective game would be too niche.
The one thing I could imagine is releasing more dnd classes, like artificer, or more subclasses. But then again there are also mods, so its not really necessary
Maybe an enhanced edition
I expect Larian's next game will be a new original IP or another entry in Divinity. Now that the wider gaming audience recognizes their brand I doubt they'll want to share their well deserved success with another franchise owner. If you ever feel an RPG slump go and play Divinity Original Sin 2, it was another masterpiece, BG3 was not a surprise hit for people who played it.
Great interview. I'd love to sit and have beers with Swen! What a fascinating mind.
Fantastic interview. So inspiring! 😊
Great interview by Tam. Really good open-ended questions about how the game’s development was challenged and how Sven sees the industry and the issues it faces currently.
I’m happy to hear that Larian is looking to attempt something different once again. People often think they just want a repeat of something they enjoyed, but what we really want is the experience of something that surprised us and immersed us because it was unexpected and engrossing. I hope Larian’s team keeps trying to evolve and explore their creativity. Thank you for the engaging upload once again.
Cool interview. Thanks for sharing this insight from Larian. I'm currently about exploring Cazador's palace, & looking forward to the battle with the 3rd 'chosen'. I usually stay clear of turn-based games, & I've never played D&D before... but I'm loving BG3 It was incredible to hear how Larian shutdown its production in order to help their team get out of the war's dangers, + the fact that they don't chase profits... instead they focus on evolving their company, (I feel like that's fantastic advice that many other companies should take to heart as well)
I wish they were doing s BG4 but that seems like a very very distant possibility now
Swen is such a great interview. He always gives thoughtful and honest answers. The people at Larian must be proud to have Swen leading them.
Sven says he wants to make games he'd be excited to play. Sven says he's excited about Dragon's Dogma 2. This is good.
Unfortunately it has a shitshow of a launch on Steam. Here I was thinking Capcom's venturing great into their redemption arc, but they just had to do it again...
MTX in a singleplayer, $80 game is unacceptable, having to pay extra to customise your character is even worse. Not to mention the poor performance.
Poor guy. He's going to be so disappointed :(
@@syro2412 "The game will have no fast travel options because the devs don't like it and you just have to make travelling fun"

Ah, the state of this industry, where publishers are actively competing to lower the bottom line. In 2024 alone, first it's the lack of NG+ in the standard edition of a game, and now this.

Wow that was a really good interview
DIVINITY 3 WE NEEDS IT
Great interview with interesting questions
Excellent interview, I hadn't realised the entire studio was totally relocated because of the war, crazy.
The cinematics are what elevated BG3 to this level of success. It just offered a next level narrative experience and Im pretty sure without them it wouldnt have been such a cultural phenomenon in the community.
Despite my love for Larian and Sven I actually would like to give props to the interviewer. Great, thoughtful questions throughout the interview. Well done!
I hope for the next game they do something similar to what WOTR did where you could become a powerful creature like a lich
That would be amazing
Edit: I mean like from a list of powerful creatures, not just a lich
They did have Divinity 2 where you became a dragon.
That would be an interesting game play.
I really like this host.
Yeah, like how he doesn't try to talk over Swen or steer the conversation into a specific direction. They just talk like normal people. Love to see it.
Yes! I can't remember the last time I watched a video game interview that was so nice!
There really seems to be a connection. He is also asking really good questions.
It’s good when the interviewee is allowed to talk without being stopped mid sentence. Asking the right questions is important but so is allowing people to get their full thoughts out
Tamoor is great at his job, very knowledgeable and allows the guest to answer the question in depth
so glad we have people like Swen and Sam Lake in the business that cares about not just making fantastic games but also about the people working there, and it is great that they are taking their time to make it as good as possible. Great interview this!
The way he said "one rpg to dwarf them all" for some reason made me think of the One Ring from Lord of the Rings, lol... likely just a coincidence, but that would be insane if they would eventually do something with LoTRs(again doubt it, but it would be awesome)...
I hope they make something similar to BG3 but in a wholly different world. I trust that whatever they do will be great!
Agreed. That's what I'm hoping for as well.
I had no idea Larian Studios existed before bg3. I only really played MMORPG's. Now I am addicted to Baldur's Gate 1/2/and 3 and I will be buying DOS1 and 2 on payday. I did used to play a lot of turn based rpg's in the form of Final Fantasy and games like them but BG3 has opened my eyes to this entire genre of games and they are perfect for me as I get older. Much more chill while still being challenging and complex. I've not has this much fun gaming since I played Heroes of Might and Magic 2 on my Packard Bell PC that had 128Mb of RAM
I was really hoping for DLC in Avernus after the main story is finished. I want to see how Karlach and Wyll survive and eventually get out
Karachi lol
Well now you never will
I was hoping for DLCs exploring some of the other locations from Baldur's Gate 1, like Candlekeep or Durlag's Tower. Or even just Cloakwood. Ah well, we can dream still.
This is cope, but technically a sequel to Planescape: Torment would not be a Baldur's Gate sequel while still having the possibility to include and expand on stuff like Avernus.
@@SirStrangefolk it's high levels of cope I'm afraid, if Swen said that it's not going to be Dungeons and Dragons then there is little to no chance it'll be set in any D&D setting

Interviews like this will make a lot of developers want to work for Larian.
The world needs more people like Swen.
I will be eagerly awaiting the next release, Larian studios one of the few developers I trust

Fantastic and insightful interview, now I want to watch his GDC talk.
Amazing to see the integrity of the person and the company. Sven for Prime Minister in Belgium 🎉
This guy gets it, wish I worked for a leader like him who understands what's important and what isn't.
No DLC content for such a masterpiece of a game is absolute blasphemy. Especially because Karlach's story was cut, and she deserved a proper ending to her story. All we really needed was maybe the Upper City, a few side quests, and the conclusion of Karlach's storyline.
Everybody strongly disagrees with their decision to not make and DLC for Baldur's Gate 3... But they clearly know what they are doing, so hopefully their next game is just as successful. I also disagree with six years being "too long" for a game.
Six years is just fine, when you are making bangers like Baldur's Gate 3. On top of that... Look at Skull & Bones, which took a decade to make, and was a disaster. Six years is not that long of a time.
Seeing Larina make a futuristic sci fi action adventure RPG game would be amazing, but I doubt they will ever do that.
Ever since I played the first Divinity: Original Sin, I knew that this studio is very passionate about what they create. I went into BG3 with great expectations and it still well exceeded them.
I hope that flame of passion never dies and I have full faith in whatever they make next!

That was great. My favorite company in gaming.
Give this man all the money and time he needs.
Why is everyone trying to get them to latch onto another big franchise? That is clearly not what they want.
He speaks so freely about everything, makes you realise it's what he actually believes and not hiding behind some mask
Just saying, I play bg3 couch coop with my brother. It’s the best game ever :p So awesome !
An rpg of BG3 calibur set in Call Of Cthulhu or Vampire Masquerade would be amazing and both offer something a little different.

Shadowrun better.
Whatever their next project is will likely be better. There's no improving upon perfection, at best it'll just be different. My hope is that they'll take the paradigm set by BG3 and make a non-linear game with a world map (e.g. like oldschool cRPG's like Fallout 1/2) or a quasi-linear story through an open world (like Dragon Age Origins).
Bg3 was one of the best games I've played in years. I agree larian should do their own IP so all the money can go to them
I don’t need BG4 from Larian. What I want is DOS III. I don’t know how they could pull that off given the range of endings in DOSII but I would love to see what they come up with because I am absolutely in love with that world.
