Hi Luke. Thanks for this. I just started the course recently. And what I like most about the course so far is that it concentrates more on the soft skills unlike the technical skills that can be learnt anywhere.
Hi Luke! Love the channel. I know this is a bit past the mark for this video, but wanted to throw my two cents in. I became a data analyst first, and am now in the process of rounding out the certs, degree, and general experience to build upon this career path I discovered and love! I am currently running through the Google Data Analytic certificate, and I agree a lot of the focus is ground level up, and some overlap on the basics that I already know. Having said that, it fills in a few knowledge gaps and makes that foundation even stronger. If someone in my situation has the time and ability to afford and take a cert like this, it gives a generally understood signal to employers or recruiters that those foundational ideas (spreadsheets, basic data analytics and project management concepts) are a known skill. There are far worse "unnecessary" certs to have, especially considering the overall quality and name recognition of a Google cert.
Thanks for taking the time to share this Jonathan! Very much agree with everything you are saying here. I hope others can see the value in your comment! Thanks again!
I would go for the IBM cert. IBM's courses use Excel and Python that most people are already familiar with during their school years,. and are 100 hours less than Google. It also has a heavier emphasis on cloud computing, which is suppose to be the next big thing brought about by AWS and MS Azure.
Or you could do both. You could study at a meager pace and complete the google cert in a few months and spend just a couple hundred bucks. It won't really hurt you and has the potential to get you a job
Just completed Both Google data Analytics and IBM data professional certificate.Currently working on my portfolio so I can stand a chance of landing an internship .Thanks for this insightful video Luke.
@@LukeBarousse thanks for the reply Luke, just wanna say I will appreciate if you can make a video on CV/Resume and Cover letter for entry Data analysts ❣❣❣
Gotta tell ya. Your videos are probably the most well thought out, intelligently laid out, and well presented videos I’ve seen on UA-cam. And unfortunately, I’ve spent WAY too much time watching UA-cam. Good job and thank you
Love the comment about not getting discouraged! Its so easy when you put out 100+ applications to feel down. We have all been there. Also, I echo Ken Jee. So well made!!
Hey Luke, Being a data analyst for the last 1.5 years, here are my thought on the video: - Pretty well-made video, that keeps people interested in what is coming next. - *R vs Python* : Agree, they should have chosen Python or provided an option to switch. - *Excel is less important* : Strongly disagree, I use Excel as much as SAS on a daily basis or more. - *Certification is useful for getting the Job* : No, but I would like to add it to my resume. *EDIT* : 2.3 Years now. Some Analysts do use R, and some say that it is really good for statistics and educational purposes. But I would still want Python to be included in courses/certifications for Data Analysts.
so would you recommend IBM which uses Python and Excel or GOOGLE which uses spreadsheet and R ,,I haven recently taken 7 day free trial but i am thinking of switching to IBM ,would you like to give any suggestion here?
One thing that's underrated about the course is the networking component. It's literally verbatim what some of these schools teach their students to do in regards to networking. Granted, it was like one week but it's what people people should pay attention to.
So in a nutshell, the certificate says you have the skills and the portfolio says you applied the skills on real projects. Meaning one cannot exist without the other and its advisable to even volunteer for lots of projects and add on skills. Thats what I understand
R vs Python : I was asked in an interview by a Public Health body, that they are looking specifically for people who can do R. Subjects like PH and epidemiology etc uses R extensively. Exactly when we are in post pandemic era. Take note guys!
Thank you Luke, this is good information, especially for the people this certificate is aimed at. People that are new to the field and need to learn the basics, as well as what additional areas they will need to work on to move forward in data analytics.
I am currently taking this course and I agree that the certificate alone will not get you a job. In my opinion it is a great start for people who want to enter into this field. Not at least it gives you a view on the skills needed and also some additional knowledge that it not part of the course, to study on your own. Also noteworthy in my opinion is that there is a part about writing a resume and applying. Of course this is not the perfect interview or resume, but it grants a small view on what to expect. And to be honest it is very big knowledge for very small price.
I think your last sums it up quite well Julian! A lot of good starting points in this course, but def have to put in the work on your own to get that dream job!
Hey Luke, I live in Zimbabwe and work as a Data Analyst. Just like Wale stated most companies in Africa are only now starting to see the value of data analysis for decision making. I am currently completing this course and I am doing it to set myself apart. I have 2 years experience in the field.
Nice video with real time experience of people who completed this course. I like the point that you interviewed people from different countries with different backgrounds. Hope to see such interviews in future also. Keep up the great work. With blessings.
Great follow up video after posting your initial video on the certificate. I think the expectation by many was that this certificate would instantly land them a job, or it would be as if Google would have facilitated their consortium of companies to reach out to every course completer, which is not the case. Overall, it was a very clean presentation of material which other providers have delivered in a very mundane way but it wasn't about job placement and in my opinion, I think that the majority of people that have completed the program won't mind that. However, some may have thought otherwise. I say take this program with a grain of salt as I had and think of it as a simple grouping of some data analysis concepts. Therefore, it doesn't matter whether they taught in R vs. Python. Go out now and learn how to clean, process, analyze, and visualize in Python if you like. Build a portfolio. Update your resume. Job search. I think with or without Google we all have to do our own home work.
MY DUDE!!! This was beautifully said and I could not agree more with this.... (although I rather python than R... 🤣 but besides that...) Thanks so much for taking the time to write this, I hope other can hear this great explanation as well!
I have been trying to find this information! Thank you so much. I am on Course 3, and trying to make that transition from classroom teacher to data analyst.
Wow am also thinking of doing the same... Classroom teacher to Data Analyst... I've been worried of the fact that I don't have any coding or technical skills or certification... If another can do it so can I 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
@@thats_bridget9503 as teachers we are data analysts by nature and our attention to detail gives us a coding edge as well. I am actually greatly enjoying what I am learning and have found applications in my classroom to practice.
@@goddess_anqet2858 Thanks so much for sharing this perspective, so crazy how another field (I.e. data analysis) relates so much to other roles, like teaching!! Love this!
I figured the certificate alone wouldn’t get you a job. Google made it seems like the certificate would get you a job. The courses give you basic beginner level skills which is nice nonetheless.
I think there definitely was hype around making it seem easy to get a job, but I think they also been pretty transparent that you need to showcase some skills as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Sam!!
I'm right now finishing the data science certificate from IBM. I don't really think the certificate alone will grant you a job but I think the certificate increases the chance to get an internship in data science, that will eventually lead to a job offer. Because when you take a certification, you learn the basics and stuff but skills liek working in data science teams or present your results in front of executives won't be taught in the course. So to get a data science job you need to combine technical skills from the certificate and practical skills from an internship or prior working experience
It’s the same as these kids that think a bachelors is going to guarantee them a job right? These are important pieces but there’s a lot of competition out there. Gotta put in the hustle. Still I love that we’re starting to see more certificates instead of degrees. I don’t think the college model works well for a lot of these types of jobs. It at least needs tweaked and these certificates are a good start
This was really great, thank you. I am taking the Google course then will follow up with the IBM as well. Luckily, Coursera is such an economical solution to pick up new skills that bring relevant knowledge without the price tag of official college credits - which are just not always necessary depending on the roles and industries you work. Additionally, I do think its great to think about the domain knowledge you can apply these new skills to - as opposed to expecting this cert to just get you a new job automatically. I think of the analyst as being a key storyteller in order to be impactful to executives and leaders making decisions. If you do not really understand the data you're attempting to speak to, you will never be seen as a credible advisor to any leadership. You really need to be able to understand the data you're looking at, what you'd like to learn from it, what's in it for the leaders you're giving insight to.
I love this, I have been thinking about doing this certificate from coursera but Im on the fence about it. This video has helped me a lot in leaning more into giving it a try and try to take the next step in my career, thank you!
I’ve ten years experience in data analytics but no relevant training so am half way through this cert now. So far it’s been very basic and process focused which to me seems correct. It should round out my experience nicely to have this so I’ll be completing it.
Hai luke. Appreciate your videos. Im a mechanical engineer by background and I believe that in the future, data analysis skill will be huge, especially for lean manufacturing and six sigma analysis. Im planning to start the course this weekend. All the best to you in your career and everyone reading this.
Thank you as a truck driver I was thinking about a career change and saw those commercials. This answers alot of questions. I now realize that if you don't already have some experience working in IT fields it sounds like a waste of time. Thank you for giving me the knowledge I needed to not pull the trigger and jump into this program. I think maybe I'll try nursing.
Amazingly useful video, Luke. Is there a way to make a video showing the portfolios that are helping these guys find their current jobs? That would be a killer video as well.
Awesome video Luke! The first time that I see real and honest feedback of the course. I'm 47-year old master of mechanical engineering, with 18-year engineering career, and I'm pretty passionate about data analytics, data science, as well as machine learning. I'm about to switch career, and I completed entire Google Analytics Professional Certificate over the 4-month period from July to November 2021, this year. My impressions are that the course is worth of attending, and considering that I'm not 100% beginner the first three were not very useful for me, as well as spreadsheets taking into account that I'm quite experience Excel user but SQL, R-language and the capstone project were excellent. Also a minus about this entire course is I would like to see more practicing, an instructor to lead the students through entire process of data analysis by using at least couple of practical examples! Anyway definitively worth of attending and devoting time!
This is a great perspective to hear. I can def understand your concerns and also your praises. I also think it’s overall a great course and could spend some more time on skill development
This was awesome! I'm half way through the Google certification course and soon to start working on projects to build up my portfolio. Google gives you the foundation for you to build upon and get you closer to landing that Job.
I'm 19 and have completed this Certificate on June now got a chance to work as a Data Engineer Intern on data intensive company..Personally speaking, project must be featured on LinkedIn if you have done so far coz learning only can't make you perform better but featuring that into the profile will be a bonus and many of us don't usually do that. Note: Just enrolled on IBM Data Science Cert.!!
This is a great video Luke where you are asking the right questions that anyone (including me) who wants to take the Google Certificate to get a headstart in DA role.
If it is equivalent to a 4 years degree then why people are finding difficult to get a job. They have showcased the value of this course like one can easily land a job of 60k-70k USD but after watching this video its like the reality is quiet different. I am personally a little disappointed after completing this course because the end goal is to land a good job in a big company
Even people with a 4 year degree would find it hard to land a job in that salary range. Even college grads also need a portfolio, internship, or other display of real world competency to have a good chance of being hired. So I wouldn’t say they misrepresented the value of the course. They never said they’d be hiring people with just this certificate, only that they would see the certificate as a substitute for a 4 year degree.
The problem is that your end goal should be to get skills and build a portfolio. Then, the job you land will likely depends on how much skilled you are and how you can demonstrate qualities like communication, etc. And also how you can sell yourself.
Im targeting google certificate at the moment.. i already learnt bunch of stuff from a nano degree powered by my country's government on udacity and id like to say its so cool!! both content and udacity itself. while im taking google certificate i will be honing skills and building a protfolio at the same time. honestly its so risky for me to switch career now especially that im a biotechnologist fresh grad but im loving it more and more so i cant stop. wish you all enjoy the learning experience like me ❤
My only reasoning for starting the course is that Coursers provides 1 free certification for the university students with an edu email. So I took advantage of the opportunity and enrolled myself… So far it’s been really good but for sure it is in no way enough for the job market but if it is offered for free…. Why not?
@@efficienzayd6103 Hi! I started the course recently. Basically what you need to do is log in to Coursera using your .edu email id and link your University's email there. Here's the link which would be the exact steps that I followed: www.coursera.org/for-university-and-college-students After registration, search for the Google DA certificate and enroll using 1 credit for free. That's what I did. I haven't finished the course yet and therefore I haven't received the certificate but I will keep this comment thread updated when I receive a certificate. But honestly, I don't think anything is different from paid version vs registering for free.
Hey Luke, so I’m extremely excited about starting the google certification course for data analysis but I’m not sure I’d be a qualified candidate. I don’t have a four year degree that most jobs on the LinkedIn website requires for the positions. I’m a barber by craft looking for a career change. All of the graduates that you interviewed seemed to have gone to college, so my question is how likely do you believe I’ll be at getting hired with just the certification being my only postsecondary education and a portfolio showing my skills.
Hey! I understand your concern completely. I think the biggest take aways from this are that you have to build up a portfolio and showcase some skills in a relevant field that you have some domain knowledge on. Using Wale's advice combined with building up your skills would put you in a good position to land a job. It's going to take some work, but I think it's accomplishable whether you have a degree or not.
@@LukeBarousse thanks I’m going to proceed to take the course and work on showcasing my knowledge through my projects in my portfolio. Hopefully it’s enough.

Hey Luke, very grateful for the great discussion on this video! I have a three plus years of being a data analyst. The past a few jobs involved in product management, category management and business analysis in the retail industry (e-commerce). I taught myself in using Excel, Tableau, SQL and Python. How much I use each one of them is really depends on the stage of my study progress and the particular task I am working on. I am now in the 7-days free trial of the course of Google Data Analyst Professional Certificate. Still feel hesitate whether should I keep moving forward on this course. I feel it is more suitable for very starter in data analysis. How much do you recommend this course for people who has some experiences in DA like me. Thanks!
I don't think this course is for you. If you're not getting anything out of it in the first free 7 days, I'd switch to something else. This course is aimed at complete beginners. I'd instead take more advanced courses
Amazing video luke ☺️👍.. explains everything in detail with live examples.. brilliant.. it's very motivational at the same time for beginners like me 😉
Nice content. Overall, I feel that this program focused too heavily on quizzes and easy assignments. For example, the last capstone project course only required me to check a box stating that I have completed the case study. I wish it would be more practical like the UX design certificate they are having, where the learners get to complete 3 portfolio projects which are helpful for them.
This is good to know Lana, thank you so much for sharing this. I really think it's like an honor system and you get in what you put out. Hopefully you got use out of it!
Thank you for this video! I currently am looking to transition to a work from home job ( currently a custodian) and where I don't need to be on the phone all day long. I happened to stumble across googles certificate course, I am not a technical person, But I'm willing to learn so I can work from home. So for me this video brought home the fact that its simple enough for a non technical person to use. though I'll need to advertise my other skills as well. I live an hour from my nearest community college and just to enroll costs me about 1,200$ to attend online classes!!! I'd rather try this first and if I decide I need more in-depth learning, I can either go to college again or find a paid training job!!! again Thank you!!
Do you advice me to take both data analyst certificate GOOGLE & IBM , will both certificates give me like a kinda boost to my resume, or it will be a waste time to take both ? And just focus on other type of courses ?
okay so I have an answer...somewhat. I recently finished the google data analytics certificate and honestly... you need both a good portfolio and some relevant skills. Now having the certificate does help give a boost I actually just got a call from a possible a few days ago and went for an interview and said that he liked both my portfolio and my certifications the google data analytics being the main one, and after we finished the interview he said he was going to put my resume as a priority for his boss to look at. Fast forward till now I start tomorrow!!

I'm currently doing the Google Cert in parallel with my B.S in Business Analytics from Embry Riddle. I like the parallel approach since I can use my GI BILL for my degree in analytics which forces me to learn a lot of the theory of why, and couple it with the practical cert from Google with the how to apply it. Replicating my work between R and Python as well.
I think this is an awesome supplemental approach! If anything I think the google cert will help solidify your learnings in school. Good luck on your data science journey!

honestly too good to be true. And I didn't expect to get a job with just this certificate. The Big Query course was very disappointing, on top of barely covering anything.
Hi. Jonathan am looking for an entry level Data Analyst job. Think of me if your company is hiring.
I would go for the IBM cert. IBM's courses use Excel and Python that most people are already familiar with during their school years,. and are 100 hours less than Google. It also has a heavier emphasis on cloud computing, which is suppose to be the next big thing brought about by AWS and MS Azure.
Thanks for sharing this point on the cloud computing, this is a very true point!
I second this! Google is too mainstream imo.
Same here i think python and excel make the difference
Or you could do both. You could study at a meager pace and complete the google cert in a few months and spend just a couple hundred bucks. It won't really hurt you and has the potential to get you a job
Thank you so much for this video. I was literally searching all day for more information about the Certification and this helped a lot.
Awe Samuel glad this helped you sort out your decision with the certificate!

Hey Luke,
Being a data analyst for the last 1.5 years, here are my thought on the video:
- Pretty well-made video, that keeps people interested in what is coming next.
Hey Pradeep, thanks for sharing your insights on this! Awesome to hear this based on your experience! Thanks again
@ZENJI GAMING Genpact
Hi Pradeep, can I contact you for 5 min, I have been as a SQL developer for last 4 years with a MNC, can you help me on how to apply for Analyst Role.
so would you recommend IBM which uses Python and Excel or GOOGLE which uses spreadsheet and R ,,I haven recently taken 7 day free trial but i am thinking of switching to IBM ,would you like to give any suggestion here?

One thing that's underrated about the course is the networking component. It's literally verbatim what some of these schools teach their students to do in regards to networking. Granted, it was like one week but it's what people people should pay attention to.
This is a great insight on the networking. Such a valuable component of the job search!
So in a nutshell, the certificate says you have the skills and the portfolio says you applied the skills on real projects. Meaning one cannot exist without the other and its advisable to even volunteer for lots of projects and add on skills. Thats what I understand
You got it Arnold! All about application of skills so that employers know that you have the skills necessary!
Amazing video, glad you found all these guys that could explain, and help new people looking, such as myself!
Super lucky to be connected wtih these individuals! Glad it was helpful to you!

I may like video editing more than data analytics 🤪 thanks for noticing!!
R vs Python : I was asked in an interview by a Public Health body, that they are looking specifically for people who can do R. Subjects like PH and epidemiology etc uses R extensively. Exactly when we are in post pandemic era. Take note guys!
Thanks for sharing this, R is a popular language in many areas including the one you are mentioning!
Love to you included my brother from Nigeria. Just watched his video few days ago.
Thank you bro!
Wale is the man!!
Thank you Luke, this is good information, especially for the people this certificate is aimed at. People that are new to the field and need to learn the basics, as well as what additional areas they will need to work on to move forward in data analytics.
Heck yeah, its more than the certificate. Gotta focus on the basics!! Thanks for the kind words!
This is awesome to hear! I hope you have been checking out Wale's content as he has a lot of great videos. Good luck with the course!

Nice video with real time experience of people who completed this course. I like the point that you interviewed people from different countries with different backgrounds. Hope to see such interviews in future also. Keep up the great work. With blessings.
Awe thanks Robin, glad to hear that you liked this perspective! May have to do this more in the future!
🤣 but besides that...)
Thanks so much for taking the time to write this, I hope other can hear this great explanation as well!
@@LukeBarousse Thank you. Now that the course is done I'll start working on some projects of my own.
I have been trying to find this information! Thank you so much. I am on Course 3, and trying to make that transition from classroom teacher to data analyst.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Sam!!
you’re delusional if you think a certificate like this would automatically guarantee you a job
@@OopsFailedArt Very much agree with your perspective on the college model. Something needs to change!
Very much agree on the importance of domain knowledge; so underrated sometimes by those that have it. Thanks for sharing this Jen!

Hi @luke, great video, thanks! Well strucutred, good interviews, valuable side-comments... Chapeau!

Very much great points that you are showcasing here @GoldenGriffon

Thanks so much for this! I put a lot of work into this one and the interviewees really helped out!
My only reasoning for starting the course is that Coursers provides 1 free certification for the university students with an edu email.
So I took advantage of the opportunity and enrolled myself…
So far it’s been really good but for sure it is in no way enough for the job market but if it is offered for free…. Why not?

Hi, a student here. Is it possible for you to share the process of enrolling and receiving the certificate (after completion) for free?
@@efficienzayd6103 Hi! I started the course recently. Basically what you need to do is log in to Coursera using your .edu email id and link your University's email there. Here's the link which would be the exact steps that I followed: www.coursera.org/for-university-and-college-students After registration, search for the Google DA certificate and enroll using 1 credit for free. That's what I did. I haven't finished the course yet and therefore I haven't received the certificate but I will keep this comment thread updated when I receive a certificate. Love the advice about building your own portfolio.

Amazing video luke ☺️👍.. explains everything in detail with live examples.. brilliant.. it's very motivational at the same time for beginners like me 😉
So glad you enjoyed the video and that it was motivational!

I'm currently doing the Google Cert in parallel with my B.S in Business Analytics from Embry Riddle. I like the parallel approach since I can use my GI BILL for my degree in analytics which forces me to learn a lot of the theory of why, and couple it with the practical cert from Google with the how to apply it. honestly too good to be true. And I didn't expect to get a job with just this certificate. The Big Query course was very disappointing, on top of barely covering anything. The R and Tableau courses were significantly better, but again not enough to actually offer a good foundation to build upon. Finished the course just to have it on my resume.
Agreed. I would actually consider the overall course to be disappointing.
