    As an IT Director, I would much rather see relevant certifications which are current than a BS in pretty much anything. I would also add having a home lab setup and being able to "talk shop" helps IMMENSELY. If you are starting from Zero the certificate is a step in the right direction.

      I have degrees in Mechancial Engineering, and a masters of Computer Science degree. I worked as ME for 3 years, with lackluster career outcomes. I went back to school for the MSC degree, with specialty in Software Engineering. School forced me to learn alot faster than I would have reading in spare time. But it was expensive. I figured I could land a job faster with a degree than otherwise. That was 15 years ago. If you prefer the certificate route instead of school, you still need to learn SWE is: S.O.L.I.D. principles, Agile development, Object Oriented Design and Analysis, Data Structures, Algorithms, Design Patterns, Databases (1 or more of: MySQl, MSSQL, Oracle, Postgres), Java/C#/C++, Assembly, JUnit (or other unit testing), Apache StringUtils (for java), IDE (eclipse, JetBrains, VSCode), Linux/Powershell, and Regular Expressions. Other things to learn: Javascript (including React, Node.js, JQuery), CSS3, HTML5, Docker, Kubernetes, and GitHub Copilot.

    My biggest problem with these certificates is the misleading statement that you do not need ANY experience in the field you are getting the certificate in. And at about 3 1/2 minutes into this video, and again at about the 6:15 point, he is even stating the experience you most likely will need.
    Here are my thoughts on this certificate program:
    Something I am wondering about, and do not see on UA-cam anywhere, is how the number of tech worker layoffs will affect this part of the industry. If you haven't read yet, as of today, January 26, 2024, there have already been 24,000 tech worker layoffs. And it isn't about to slow down form what the companies themselves are saying, including Google.
    How is getting one of these certificates going to land you any position right now? It was already more difficult than Google is telling everyone, as these certificates alone do not get most people an interview, never mind their foot in the door. The majority of people that only have one of these certificates, and no other certifications or a degree, are being told they need actual work experience for a real company, not just a portfolio of practice projects for the Google certificate.
    So, we're back to what us "older workers" have heard when we first started looking for employment; you need experience to get the job, then we wold ask, "How do I get the experience if you don't hire me for the job?" The 'ol catch-22 all over again.

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  11 місяців тому +20

      Thanks for the comment! It's one of the most difficult job markets in recent memory, and with alot of people impacted by workforce reductions, there is a high supply of experienced workers in the job market.
      Some certs are worth more than others depending on industry. But at minimum, they add to the "evidence" of a candidate being knowledgeable and/or interested in a particular subject. It's a signal to a prospective employer that you're willing to learn and develop yourself.
      The jobs one qualifies for depends largely on experience, and every job requires varying types of experience and years of experience. Everyone needs to determine what current experiences they have relative to where they want to go. The experience does not need to be an exact match for a future role, but if there isn't at least some relevancy, then certs and degrees are a way to fill that gap.

      @@AbdulGhani-vm6oq Is this a serious question? A lot of trolls, so you never know.
      What do I think no experience needed means? Well, I think it means you don't need any experience. Pretty simple.
      Google is misleading everyone when they tell you about their certificates. They tell you what is in demand, then that they have the certificate for that, then they tell you how many job openings there are, and how much the average person is being paid. And then they tell you that you don't need any experience in the field for any of the certificates. And the kicker is when they say they are working with 150 companies that have agreed these certificates are legitimate, and Google themselves counts these certificates the same as a four year degree.
      The problem is, when people are out looking for these positions with one of the Google certificates, they are told doing a project, or putting together a portfolio from one of these certificate courses, does not count as experience. They are told they need real world experience, having worked for a company in the capacity they are applying for.

I asked my current employer who I have worked for 16 years if I could volunteer in the IT dept in order to gain experience and I was told HR does not allow people to work for free. I said I will work minimum wage on the side of my current job and that was still a no. It is VERY difficult to just "gain experience" in order to get even an entry level job in IT. @@kristiann03i hit the discouragement part of this course. There are factors why it happened so:
      1. Trying to rush the course and finish as much throughout the day
      2. Reading negative comments on reddit
      To combat 1, practice your acquired project management skills when planning your study and make it time bound. How many hours a day you plan to study? How many modules you plan to finish? Plan your week ahead and stick to it. I do 1 module a day with 5hrs or less of study. In a week, I am able to finish 1 chapter then have free time later to enjoy myself (watch fave anime), work or workout. Anything that will give you a rest from studying to avoid burnout. Find a creative outlet! Reward yourself if you manage to stick to your plan for the week, may be a meal or pastries?
      To combat 2, you don't need those negative energuis in your life. I am a believer that the thoughts manifest to reality. Talk to your friends, show yourself grace and love. If you can't find motivation, just cover 1 topic a day, it will still lead you somewhere and you'll be surprised you are already far. Take it slow when your body wants to rest, but don't stop. Find a support system that will encourage you coz sometimes fire came from outside not inside.

If you're pursuing a career that's an adjunct to your existing experience (e.g. an IT pro who wants to get into Cybersecurity) , then sure, a Google cert may help you win a job over a candidate with equal experience who doesn't have one, but it isn't going to provide an entry point into a worthwhile position.

    Hi Richard, I'm mid-study in the Google Project Mgt Cert. I've spent the last 20 years working in IT infrastructure and have been designing and installing for most of that time. For the last 2 years, I've been in a new role as an IT Infrastructure Engineer ( cool title) where I've worked as an integral part of the project teams. I hope that this cert will allow me to find a position and advance in the project management field. Thanks for the video. I have been wondering if this cert is worth my time or not.

    I'm and educator that is looking to potentially leave the field of education for data analytics or project management, which is why I'm interested in these Google Certifications. Seems like reasonable career move since I already have to analyze student outcomes to determine how lessons are structured from unit to unit. What would be a good way to leverage my experience in analyzing student outcomes once I earn the Analytics Certificate?

      After completing projects to showcase my skills, I embarked on volunteering services to businesses and explored opportunities on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr. Upon receiving positive feedback from satisfied clients, I leveraged their testimonials and references for my job search. During my free time, I pursued projects aligned with my interests, constantly seeking new challenges to enhance my portfolio. Engaging with industry peers through events like hackathons proved invaluable in my journey as a self-taught backend software developer. Following a structured learning path over six months, I built a robust portfolio before applying for full-time roles. Meanwhile, I undertook gig work for small and mid-sized businesses, accumulating references and testimonials along the way. It took approximately one year from the start of my learning journey to secure my first full-time position, and now, with over eight years of experience in the industry, I hold a senior role, commanding a six-figure salary.

I would worry about two things, 1) if they are runing a linkedin filter or have a mandatory "education" field youre out. 2) even when applying at google they can leave you out for not having a degree (trust me)

    The education that you get with a degree from a university that doesn't apply to a profession is valuable. As hiring manager I am surprised that you do not understand how a those classes and training contributes to a persons ability to understand the world around them. Take a class in philosophy or psychology it will help someone think deeper about the choices they make or help them perform better as part of a team. Those classes have nothing to do with IT but they do help the IT professional with critical thinking and makes them a more rounded employee. At 6:43 in your video I would reconsider your comment. I would argue that it hurts your credibility on this subject.

    @RichardWalls Will the Google Advanced Data Analytics Professional Certificate still be valuable to job seekers in 2025 as AI chips away at Google search and reduces the need to learn to code? Are there better certs to spend my energy on given that my focus is job hunting in 2025/getting an opportunity? For example, IBM Data Science cert (which doesn't expire)? Would love to hear your thoughts.

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes, still valuable from the standpoint that 1) It's relatively inexpensive; 2) Gives you a good foundation on analytics and some of the tools used; 3) Let's you dig into the material to know if you enjoy it enough to pursue a more serious credential (i.e. full fledged Master's degree).
      Are there better certs from a job hunt standpoint? Yes! Some certs and degrees are going to stand out quite a bit more. That said, they also cost more than the Google certs, and require a major time investment.
      Luckily, there are some programs that are still relatively affordable. Georgia Tech OMSA and University of Texas MS in Data Science are top ranked programs for around $11K.
      For shorter term education options, University of Texas and UC Berkeley offer, for example, 6-7 month programs in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. For $4K - $8K
