Adult Swim - Char's Counterattack Long Promo

- The Adult Swim Action 1 minute promo for Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack.
As far as I know, this commercial isn't on the web anywhere else. It was recorded by me from an old VHS tape in 2002 on the last weekend of the regular Saturday Action lineup right after the Toonami Rising Sun broadcast.
Lots of history in this video. Remastered using the Blu-Ray of the movie by JazzMasterSamurai.
Optimus Prime promoting a Gundam movie. Perfection.
Yes.
I miss Peter Cullen on Toonami...
Optimus Prime has been around huh
I’ve also noticed how the narrator sounds like Prime, but was the narrator’s voice actually Peter Cullen?
@@aminsaleh7686 peter Cullen IS the voice actor for Optimus, since the first Transformers back in the 1980s.
End of an era right here as this was the final broadcast of the original Adult Swim Saturday night anime block.
+Brenin Maness Actually haven't they been airing anime up until now? They brought back a program called Toonami two years ago. Toonami airing anime now is still a part of the adult swim program.
He's just talking about adult swim action. Toonami came later to adult swim. Adult swim had an action block back them but it wasn't called anything special
+Brenin Maness He's referring to a time back when Adult Swim was in its relative infancy. It only played on Saturdays (anime) and Sundays (comedy) throughout 2002, and Char's Counterattack was the final airing of the Saturday AS right before Adult Swim moved to weeknights.I need to get this on DVD some time. That night was one of the few times I've cried while watching an animated movie (the ending when Amuro sacrificed himself to save the Earth and take out Char) and then Beyond the Time started playing and the tears rolled slowly down my cheeks.
+Zenigundam they got a Blu Ray out now
You can still hear Moltar
We were so spoiled with Toonami growing up. These shows were so creatively inspiring. Wish I could go back and be amazed by all of this for the first time again.
MichaelCasanovaMusic Amen to that.
Movie cca is a movie
It was magic. I still think about it sometimes, we were very lucky.
Dammit, they should have said "Revenge is a dish best served *CHARRED".* That would have been the _best goddamn pun ever._
Agreed!
Yup
LMFAO
Imagining it in his voice makes it 1000 times more hilarious too 😂
You should have said, "That would have been the *best gundamn pun ever.*"
Hearing Peter Cullen talk about Gundam is a trip.
That Saturday was the greatest night in the history of Adult Swim. I cried when Beyond the Time started playing at the end of the movie.
Zenigundam Bro, I did the exact same thing as well. The movie was so epic and dark.
The YYH and Bebop marathons (July '02) were pretty epic. But ya this was definitely an event, probably much more so than any of us realized at the time. Strangely enough though: on the day of, I almost forgot about it! "Oh yeah Adult Swim is airing that movie tonight...!"
@@Re207 Yeah, I actually thought it felt like an event as much as those four marathons with the way Adult Swim advertised it ad nauseam and stretched it out over the entire three hour block just to get all those commercials in for Lupin and "the premiere of" weeknight AS (M-Th). It still took me nearly a half hour into the movie to realize that it was the final chapter of Mobile Suit Gundam because I hadn't seen the last episodes of MSG at the time and was a little confused.
@@RobbieStacks90 i saw this anime movie years ago and it was awesome.
And I'm still waiting it as I am still today.
Same here!! My brother and I both laughed in confusion when it ended. I have since grown to love the ending!
Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime) does the voice of this promo. AWESOME!
If only he came back...
It sounds so amazing to hear him say Gundam terms and names. I never even knew about this, until now.
gundamg14 Peter Cullen is one of the best voice actors and one of the absolute best narrators ever.
Nexus258 I agree with you one hundred percent.
Peter Cullen is the best voice actor as Optimus Prime.
R.I.P. Michael Kopsa (Char Aznable)
These long promos showed how much love Adult Swim had for its Anime block.. good times.
Just an absolutely perfect promo. The music featured in it is "Inosan" by DJ Food, btw
Thank you for IDing that track.
Thanks for the name.
I remember this movie when I was in middle school. I felt so spoiled that adult swim was able to show it to me. It was a one time event and I caught it all. I had the model kits and even chars flagship I was so happy
RIP Michael Kopsa. You will always be the Red Comet.
Rest in Peace
Michael Kopsa was also Roger Baxter, Blythe’s father from Littlest Pet Shop (2012)!
these promos were cut so good, anyone who sees this has to want to see the full movie
I remember watching this secretly when I was super young because it was late and my parents were checking on me to be asleep. I had no idea what I was watching but I was mesmerized. Haven't seen the movie in years and still to this day and I remember all these scene vividly. Such a weird memory unlock and I'm not even a Gundam fan.
Adult Swim kicked ass in the early 2000s. Gonna try and see if I can stream this movie and watch again.
It's on Netflix my dude. Grab some popcorn and have some fun.
Lmao that was literally my experience back in the early 2010's when they were showing Akira.
"...We shall discipline the people who continue to live on Earth, and eliminate the source of any wars in Earth Sphere!" -Char Aznable
Kevin Broderick proceeds to while them out by the billions instead of discipline
And it was 100% a lie. Char is a sociopath, he doesn't give a fuck about any of it. He just wanted to have a throw down with Amuro.
@@specialnewb9821 that and massive genocide for the lulz.
After so many years still is one of the best movies ever made.
The earth can not go on like this any longer!
No one has the right to punish human beings that way!
I'm Char Aznable! It's my destiny to enforce discipline, Amuro!
Jdh87
You're full of yourself!
*even though I think this is where the first comment actually goes if I recall* Can't beat me with that machine.
Hail Neo Zeon!
interestingly enough, this film got its dub and release in the US. before Zeta Gundam and ZZ were imported. Zeta didn't get an U.S. dub and release till a year after this film was released (and Zeta was never aired on Toonami) , and ZZ didn't get an official release till a decade later. Char mentions the Titans (which he pronounces as the tee-tans in the eng dub) in CCA, but unless you had access to other means, the only time American viewers got to see the Titans prior to CCA us release was at the end Gundam 0083, which also came to the US years before Zeta Gundam.
Yeah, but the thing is that the movie itself seems to act more as a sequel to the first series than to Zeta and ZZ so it wasn't too much of a problem.
I remember this promo. I was so hyped back all those years ago. Id eventually got this on dvd. Awesome times.
Same with me. I couldn't catch it on TV, we didn't have access to Direct TV, so I only got to see stuff like this when visiting my grandma, 300 miles away. But seeing the promo, I promised myself to seek out the DVD as soon as I could. Two weeks later, due to me not having much access to online shopping at the time, I bought it.
This movie premiered on [adult swim] 15 years ago today.
I miss you Adult Swim...
This makes me nostalgia so hard...
I can't help but feel like this is an AU where Optimus met and fought in these times and is telling this story to the Autobots.
Best AU ever!
I remembered when it premiered to be on that Saturday night. Arguably the perfect end to one of the greatest duels of any movie genre.
Damn this really was 18 years ago today. I'm feelin old man.
I was so pumped to watch this after 0079, Zeta, and ZZ. Too bad Zeta and ZZ never aired on Toonami back in the day.
Rest in Peace Micheal Kopsa
Ronald Quincy to Bright Noa:
Given the mass of the Axis Asteroid, her composition, her dimensions, her sheer velocity; You can fire every nuke you've got at her, she'll just smile and keep on coming.
THE best Gundam promo on the old Adult swim. The best.
This guy's voice makes anything and everything all the more awesome. I take it it's the guy that does Optimus voice right?
It actually does sound like Peter Cullen
@@lupinvash3 it is Peter Cullen
Damn you,Hathaway...you killed your own friend just for blue haired girl in Zeon...
Hathaway,NO!!!!!!
Revenge is a dish best served cold.
Steven Dolce And it is very cold in outer space.
Yes it is.
+Steven Dolce CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR
CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR
Primus Productions
Ah ha! This guy gets it.
+mechaman13 It's cold in outer space? ........
Well you got the point.
I got to see this film for the first time in theaters it was sooo epic
its so surreal hearing optimus prime saying mobile suit gundam
I do miss those days.
We had this AND Cowboy Bebop.
It was this promo that prompted me to buy the DVD, as I didn't have access to CN at home. I saw this when visiting my grandmother for Christmas.
"We will eliminate the source of any wars"
Now we know why Kopsa was cast as Schenberg in 00
this is my drug
I just got goosebumps watching this. I am not exaggerating.
"Deeming Earthlings so VILE a creature..." The way he said that gave me goosebumps...
Toonami to this day is undefeated and unrivaled in promos for anime and making it feel like it’s special on the promo alone.
If youre not hyped after Peter Cullen amazing promo for Chars Counterattack then that means your soul is weighted down by earth's gravity
Damn... I'm just finding out they aired 0080, 0083 and this on TV back in the day. I only remember watching Wing, G Gundam and 08th MS Team.
They played Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam The 08th MS Team, Gundam 0080, Gundam 0083, Char's Counter Attack, Gundam Wing, Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, G Gundam, Gundam Seed, and later Scifi Channel played Gundam 00.
Early 2000s, was a good time to be a Gundam fan in the United States. Pity... Gundam has fallen out with western anime fans. They were planning to air Zeta Gundam, and later Turn A but by Seed Gundam just wasn't getting the ratings on TV anymore, Zeta only made it to DVD and Turn A never saw english dubs.
I only remember Gundam Wing I remember on Adult Swim they aired 0083 though.I remember they also showed Gundam Seed but they did that around 5 on something called miguzi or migoozi. I am a little upset with them for that because they cancelled a really great cartoon called Swat Kats because of violence yet they show shows like Gundam which is really violent. Of course that was a long time ago now lol.
***** Zeta never airing in the west is the biggest crime in history.
Audrey Catherine True. Most Western Gundam fans don't know of the glory that is Haman Karn-sama. In this movie, Char's pretty much ripping off of Haman-sama's ambition(which makes you wonder why he didn't just join the Neo-Zeon Axis?)
Superhero18 Probably because he didn't like Haman and she tries to kill him lol. He also wouldn't want to take orders from Glemy so he bides his time and wait.
Damn this takes me back!! A promo for the best Gundam film with the voice of Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), too much AWESOME!!
I rewatched this movie and god this movie is so underrated . The politics of war
I unfortunately live in Canada so the closest thing we had to a Toonami was Bionix, Friday nights on YTV. To my recollection, we had Dragon ball GT, Witch Hunter Robin, Eureka Seven, Fullmetal Alchemist, Stand Alone Complex, Inuyasha, Gundam Wing, Seed, Destiny, Samurai Jack, and Justice League Unlimited. These are the shows that defined my childhood. I don't recall Char's Counterattack ever airing in Canada and neither Yu Yu Hakusho which was a true sin if you missed that while growing up.
Don’t forget Death Note! YTV aired that as well.
❤❤❤❤❤❤ oh my fucking god. That was perfection right there. The way peter narratives his lines were just incredible. I got chills man. and I thought it was New. The. Good old days were the best. Sometimes I wish I cud go back again and enjoy them
The GOAT.
Nothing tops this promo. And nothing ever will.
I'm still glad I was able to capture this back in the day. This was the first copy of this promo that ended up on the internet after 15 years.
Toonami and adult swim make the best promos
Shame we never got Zeta Gundam, no ZZ to explain the movie so Char's counter attack felt out of place in context.
Eventually we did, just not on TV.
It's finally coming out on Blu ray
The two anime series that ruined anime for me: *_Legend of the Galactic Heroes_* and *_Mobile Suit Gundam (Universal Century Timeline)_*. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
best anime right there
what do you mean ruined?
@@paraclonebasedtrooper8225
As in, shows with a unique quality (Whether if it's a top tier show or just has this certain feeling)
That no other show can replicate
Probably a box ooh i understand i thought they said like this anime ruined the uctimeline
@@paraclonebasedtrooper8225
They set a standard of quality anime
Char is still fighting for our prayers!
Optimus Prime announcing Char's Counterattack, I literally cannot handle all the '80s in this promo xD
80's Awesomeness overload...
I think I have the original broadcast recorded on a VHS tape somewhere, I Know I have Adult Swim New Years Eve Bash recording which featured all the promos for Char's Counterattack which hyped up a week before it aired.
That's awesome! Great to know there are other copies of that night are floating out in the world. That's one of my prized VHS tapes that I've had for over 20 years.
We really had it great. Thank you Mr Cullen
Gundam shows have been on Toonami for years
I remember watching this premiere I was so young yet understood char
Can anyone identify the badass music track in the background?
I had my vcr ready for this not knowing I caught the best line up in adult swim history
Thank you for posting this. This promo is my favorite from Toonamai.
Man, it's been so long that I completely forgot Peter Cullen used to voice these promos.
IS THAT OPTIMUS PRIME AS THE NARRATOR?!
This will be in theaters December 5th for gundams 40th anniversary!
THE GOLD DAY OF AS MAN BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE I WAS BORN IN THE 2000S AND AS STILL HAD STYLE LIKE THIS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER BEST ART AT TIME
Optimus out here talking about Gundams-
Toonami knew how to cut a sick fucking promo! I still get goosebumps watching this
4 people have been killed by a Mobile Suit.
Peter Cullen the gawd on the mic.
Good Adult Swim we miss you
Peter Cullen who they also got to do the ads for Wing, and did Voltron back in the 1970s, and some obscure car cartoon in the 1980s
Wow. Glad this randomly came into my feed. Hearing this promo after so many years, I realize they were trying to capture Gundam Wing fans, too, based on how they phrased it.
ORIGIN IS COMING TO TOONAMI ON 7/6/19
Hail Zeon !
God, the Peter Cullen bumps for Gundam were so goddamn kino, what a time it was.
Only the Londo Bell, Amuro Ray, and his Gundam stand in their way
The series may not have finished on Toonami... but glad [adult swim] aired the movie and that's my satisfaction
I couldn't wait until that came on that December on adult swim
If gundam ever came back to the US and aired on toonami, the fool proof plan for success this time around is to have gundam 00 air, which will make gundam wing and seed fans happy, and then have unicorn air simultaenously as a huge mini series weekly or bi weekly event to make UC fans happy!
max pinelli Believe it or not, Toonami actually aired Gundam Unicorn and Iron Blooded Orphans.
@@swordofll9599
My guess is that the next Gundam series they are probably going to take up is either the re-edited tv version of the Gundam: The Origin OVA, or possibly (and this one is a long shot) the re-dub of Gundam: Seed using the HD Remastered scenes.
Addendum: or they could try and get 00.
Actually they did Aired Gundam 00 and Gundam Age on Cartoon Network sort of or it's mostly exclusive to Cartoon Network Asia.
Gundam 00 aired here in America on SYFY!
Damn I look good
Yes, you still got it
Peter Cullen didn't know that this promo is for [as] action???
"Deeming Earthlings so VILE a creature..." The way he said that gave me goosebumps...
unicorn gundam needs to come to adult swim already
***** And rerelease them. And also every single UC animated work in one big boxset.
+G2BattleConvoy Counting both the compilation movies for 0079 and Zeta, that's four TV series, eight movies (not counting G-Saviour), and five OVAs. That's assuming that there won't be any miscellaneous stuff like Green Divers or Ring of Gundam. It would probably cost a years worth of Gunpla to buy.
Mike Rotch Plays Games Ah, but which size of Gunpla?
Master Grades I guess. Maybe some higher end High Grades if we wanna lowball.
Oh, God. In hindsight, it's better that they're being released one at a time, then.
" ... deeming humans so vile a creature, Char schemes to save the planet by destroying the people."
I'm guessing he worded it differently at the big staff meeting. When you put it like that, it all seems kind of... counter-productive.
watching this back in the day, I was entertained but confused by a ton of shit and after finally finishing Zeta, lmfao, dear god does a lot of this make far more sense, it's a shame Zeta never aired on TV here
Adult Swim Action didn’t return after this until April 17, 2004, after Toonami moved to Saturdays only.
Imagine if Char and Anavel Gato teamed up... Zeon would've won.
I dunno Amuro is better than both of them
+TheDarknessWithin11 forget Gato.. Char would have had Kamille under his wing (if the original story were allowed to play out) those two alone would be enough to fight off Amuro. He's a more powerful newtype than the both of them though they're both more combat savvy.
+Thomas Travis Heh... Took the words out of my mouth. Kamille and even Judau (the strongest newtype) would destroy Amuro. If Kamille was under Char's mentorship during the One Year War, Zeon would have had easily won. Even without Gato.
Something I just thought about. I don't know whether or not Kamille would be in support of wiping out the earth's population. That would lead me to believe he may side with Amuro. If that were to happen Char would have been owned. Because Amuro whooped Char by himself on multiple occasions if Kamille were fighting with him Neo Zeon would have been negated lol. As for Judau he never met Char or Amuro so depending on where Kamille went I think Judau would end up on that side just because of their relationship in ZZ.
Gato is a Zabi loyalist.
He'd follow Haman over Char.
This promo dude.. so good!!
God damn i miss the great show they use to play ion adult swim... i remember seeing Akira a while back ,
Stop saying God=Lord Jesus Christ's name in vain. He can d---- you for it on judgement day if you keep doing it. Unfortunately there is no rest in the lake of fire and brimstone for either the unrepentant or the disbelieving. It is the second death.
I think I saw this when I was either in middle school or an elementary school when I first got into Gundam through Gundam Wing
“Armuo I thinking of something wicked. Only on adult swim!”
Maybe for IBO Season 2 they can do a promo similar to this one coming in October of this year
The night adult swim action changed.
Justin Prather Agreed. The movie was fantastic.
FFFFUUUUCCCCCKKKKK YEEEEAAAHHHH!!!!!!!
my thoughts exactly
COMING TO SELECT THEATERS IN DECEMBER!
that's really cool
This looks amazing why can’t toonami have this now
Beautiful!
Optimus Prime announcing Gundam intros. What a crossover.
Puppycorn is a gundam char counterattack Midnight
Second Neo Zeon War (0093, February 27th - March 12th).
if only Hamon was alive to see Char true plan she would sided with him again
Tabiaus Taylor I dunno. The two would probably go intense again and ended up creating a civil war within their Neo-Zeon (like Glemy Toto). After all, Haman wants to rule the Earth Sphere for herself (that's why she uses Mineva Lao Zabi as [pretty much] her puppet), after all, while Char only wants to force the Earth to heal by nuclear winter and move Earthnoids to space for the next evolution: Newtypes. Haman's a conqueror. Char's a well-intentioned extremist. Totally different goals and agendas.
