That was the mission I was stuck on. I experienced this through Blockbuster rentals, and each time, I got filtered by the Amuro mission. One day I'll experience this game again, and defeat that block.

We need a modern successor to Zeonic Front. Not some multiplayer cash grab, but a proper, full-fledged game! It was, hands down, the best Mobile Suit game ever created.
Gundam Breaker 3: Breaker Edition on PS4 is amazing. SO much better than the New Gundam Breaker garbage.
Imagine playing it on vr from the point of view of the pilot. You still get the and route and team set up and all, but you get to pilot a mobile suit and fight alongside the midnight fenrir.... 🤷🏾♂️
I won't lie I would love a new Zeonic Front. I 100% the game and still kept playing it for years but I would be lying if I say I trust ANYONE to actually be able to make a good successor these days. Believe me I would love to be proven wrong.

I remember this coming out. I was on deployment in Kuwait and this showed up in the BX one day. I snapped it up immediately as I played a lot of the other games mentioned. Actually had weekly competitions for the White Dingos in tech school.
Played the hell out of it. One of my tent-mates asked about it and I just said it's Rainbow Six with giant robots and war-crimes. It suddenly became one of the most played games in my tent. Everyone was playing it. Funny enough, this was when 08th MS Team was still coming out on DVD. Between the two, I had a tent of boomers who became Gundam fans over that deployment.
That's such an awesome story! Thank you for your service and I'm sure this game holds a special place in your heart after reading that.
I have a similar video coming out on Journey to Jaburo soon, not in the same league as Zeonic Front IMO but still an iconic game in its own right.

Gundam Zeonic Front was a huge part of my childhood with how much I looked forward to playing it when I got home from school, and I had NEVER seen a single episode of the Gundam anime before playing it. All I knew was from pop culture osmosis that we were playing as the bad guys, and at the time I found it so cool that, despite playing as bad guys, we weren't depicted as pure evil but simply soldiers doing their duty, with their own motivations, desires, doubts and fears. I would say this game is one of the big things that sparked my growing love for all things Sci-Fi as I grew up. Obviously other things inspired it as well, but my interest in Military History and Science Fiction was probably influenced greatly by how much I loved playing this game and getting immersed in the narrative of the war of 0079.
And yet everyone keeps claiming that a FPS game can't do the same thing. I smell incompetence in western devs, I do.
I loved this game. Played the hell out of it. Took quite sometime to get good at it. Can’t just run in a gun everything down. More like rainbow 6 with mechs.

You can not go wrong with a game that takes place in the Mobile Suit Gundam universe to the tactical gameplay of Rainbow Six.
The only problem with Zeonic Front is that its too short lol.
I still fondly remember that mission where you need to gathered info of the White Base, the pure horror of being spotted by the RX-78 and your entire squads get eliminated within seconds.
I got HARD STUCK on that mission as a child. My simple brain at the time could not comprehend how to successfully do the mission and I recall having tried multiple attempts across a few days, trying different routes in the hope of getting all the data we needed. Nothing compares to the dread of hearing "Amuro launching!" before you were even close to getting the data. I remember getting it done by sending one squad around the back to scan the White Base and accomplish the main objective while the other 2 squads tangled with the Guncannon and Guntank and then threw themselves as a sacrifice against the Gundam itself to buy time for the sneaky squad to scan White Base. Even then, I just barely got it done and felt so much relief at being able to move onto the next mission, where I got to enjoy straight forward combat again.
@@Lazarultos I remember having to cheese the mission by hiding one of my squads behind two rocks, if I'm not mistaken, that aggro the enemies but the Ai don't know how to go around it or something.
I love how tactical and gritty this game feels. The customization and range of suits makes you want to keep playing to unlock more. It's honestly one of my favorite games of all time, I would repeatedly rent it as a kid since we couldn't afford to buy it. This is a perfect representation of how mobile suits should feel in my opinion. Also the mission gathering info on white base is nightmare fuel for me. It really instills just how op grandpa gundam was. Just hearing Amuro count as he destroys my teams effortlessly...*shudders*
A modern remake of this would literally be a dream come true.

Found this channel from the AC4 video and saw this on the side. Absolutely Zeonic Front is one of my favorite games and the reason I'm such a Zeon fan, along with being introduced to the series via a Zaku toy as a toddler. I rock the Midnight Fenrir Corps Logo in GBO2 and even coincidentally replayed both AC4 and Zeonic Front just a few weeks ago! I wish some more properties show Ace Pilots being ace due to tactics and strategy and careful planning like the Fenrirs are, rather than just being the best fighter or a newtype.
I'm also glad that it isn't so forgotten by both the Fans and Bandai, as things related to it pop up a lot such as appearances in other games and shoutouts such as a brief appearance in Code Fairy and the inclusion of suits and music tracks into GBO2
The mission to recon the White base and its mobile suits is still a nightmare to me even today at my current.
I feared that mission too. And the Jaburo mission and HLV defense mission.

So its 2002 and my folks are getting divorced, I'm miserable and no one wants to deal with my pity party. I wasn't looking forward to Christmas at all cuz everything sucks I'm full on Edgy teen angst mode. My Older Sister moved away and didn't have to deal with parents BS on the regular, but for Xmas got me Zeonic Front helped me figure out the controls and the routing system and spent most of the day with me. I remember being blown away by the intro sequence, And I liked that it was showing the Zeon side of the conflict. Got me out of my depression for most of the following year.
Least favorite level is the Recon on Whitebase in the forest. I died sooooo much in that one.
Zeonic Front absolutely needs an HD Remaster and for it to be put on modern Consoles. Modding Scene would go crazy frankly

An absolutely perfect untapped well for a potential sequel is by adapting Kondo’s revival of zeon manga that details how char’s neo zeon forces made it to space shortly before the events of Char’s counterattack. The Manga is gritty and realistic, just the way a new zeonic front game needs to be.
I played this game when I was about 12 or 13.. I was creative enough to create my own routes, coordinate all the teams mid battle, etc. Then when I tried to replay this game not too long ago, I barely finished mission 1. It made me wonder, how the hell did I finish this game back then.
I love that this game treats beam weaponry just like in the anime. Defeating the RX-78 for the first time was one the most exhilarating experiences in a Gundam game I've ever had.
I also recommend Lost War Chronicles, a game that has never been brought to the west as far as I know, but it's playable and my favorite Gundam game ever. It's Journey to Jaburo, but better.
I got this game as a kid, I wasn't very good at because I was so yong but when I finally did beat the story mode through trial and error, it felt so rewarding. The hardest mission for me was that recon mission at night, mentioned in the video. It was so scary because of the atmosphere, BGM, and the enemy Gundams patrolling that could obliterate you if they found you.
FINALLY! Someone gives this game it's due! For me, it was like Rainbow Six, but with Mobile Suits and to me that was a winning formula. I think the last simulator mission you had to do where it was a sandstorm and you had to destroy the RX-78 (w/ Amuro at the helm). I found that the easiest way to do that one was to use the spraybeam on the Dom, get close and bazooka.
Spraybeam on the Dom is the most OP thing ever!
Love the video! I grew up playing Federation vs.Zeon on the PS2 so it's awesome to see other Mobile Suit titles with the same nostalgia and love
Having played this in elementary/middle school as my second ever Gundam game, I have grown to realize how much of an impact it had on me. Not only how I miss how good clunky it felt in feeling like using giant robots, but the fact that I've only ever been disappointed by every call back to it. Whenever zeonic front is featured in a game, Side stories, SD Gundam Generations, I find myself immensity disappointed they do the story and characters from this game.
I am with you. Day one purchase for a remake of this game.
Man, this takes me back! I remember being 10 years old and playing this on a rented copy from Blockbuster. I didn't get very far, obviously lol but I do remember one mission. In particular. The objective was to take out the Gundam and all I had were three zakus. My little devious 10-year-old brain managed to set up a pincer attack, two of them with the heaviest bazookas. I could give them waiting an ambush, well a third was supposed to meet the Gundam head-on and retreat, luring it in to take two heavy shells in the back. I know those two shots didn't take it out, but it turned it into a three-on-one while it was weakened, and I think I actually managed to beat that mission lol. Great memories!
I love this game. It was one of the first Gundam games I owned if not the first, its close whether I got it or Federation Vs Zeon first. I was very disappointed when I realized my hopes for a Zeta era sequel weren't coming. The Dom is my favorite One Year War era Mobile Suit so any game that gives me the keys to one I'm there for. I gt this in the summer and stayed up until I passed out playing this.
This is and the Dreamcast one by far are my most favorite. The way the story and how "real" it feels along with all the character development, really helps sell it. Ive never felt the weight of my actions more in other gundam game, that i did in these 2.❤

Federation Vs Zeon is my personal favorite, but Zeonic Front is a close second. It really nailed making the MS feel like real, heavy machines.

We need a modern version of Fed vs Zeon with larger battles. I loved the campaign mode structure far more than Gundam vs Zeta's (Though GvZ added a lot of great stuff that FvZ 2 would need).

Basically echoing my opinion. There are things that each does better than the other, but they both put you in the perspective of a normal pilot and both make the enemy "hero" units appropriately terrifying, though if I have one complaint Federation vs. Zeon leans a little heavily on HP padding for that. Game definitely offers more and had fun missions though.
Ironically the Ace/Hard mode of this game I found significantly easier than standard because of the Doms which just break the game in two, tho not the most broken units in the game.
That honor goes to a specific Zaku I (yes a Zaku I) variant used by CPO Manning equipped with a 90mm AR (basically the games sniper rifle) and Reloader III. It out ranges everything and reloader III effectively turns whats supposed to be a high damage single shot long range weapon into a high damage long range machine gun that just never stops. Easy S Ranks
Other than that, the only thing that infuriated about Zeonic Front as a whole was that you could never get the shield gatling for the Gouf Customs. Like.....it was right there in the opening cinematic, why tease us with it and never give it!
So far I’ve only put time into Battle Op 2 and Code: Fairy but I’m very thankful to hear about some great, classic single player games as well! Great work!
Zeonic Front was my favorite PS2 Gundam game, but Rise From the Ashes was the best overall. I loved actually feeling like I was piloting a big heavy armed mech. And the toughness of all the different mobile suits (kind of the opposite of ZF) made for some grueling but fun battles. Clashing beam saber to heat hawk in melee always looked cool to me. There was even some multiple outcomes in there, as if you failed to save the transports of some Guncannons, then you never got access to them.
Great video! Like others in the comments mentioned, it's nostalgic to review this game! You really felt like part of a team that was caught in the waves of the One Year War. That mission where you gathered info on the White Base was the most tense, high stakes gaming shit in my mind as a teen 🤣 Amuro counting off your squad as he picked them off was a great (and spooky) detail!

I stumbled upon your AC4 Vid and was gonna check it out but then I noticed this vid and immediately came to watch this, had my fair share of Gundam games from various types, from SD Gundam Battle Alliance which I bloody loved, SD G Generation Cross Rays which I also bloody love and took a bloody long while to complete, Gundam Evolution which also quite love though shame it's being shut down and "recently" Gundam Battle Operation 2 which Ive been non-stop playing because of it's large selection of UC Mobile Suits (Love my Marasai and ReZELs) honestly I just loved them all in their own ways though specially love Battle Operation 2 and Cross Rays, Zeonic Front is certainly quite a unique game with it's features like the route planning and play style, I haven't really delve on how Zeonic Front played other than knowing what the story is from SD G Generation Genesis (A game I wish I could play) and honestly it's a good thing I stumbled upon you because now I have a better understanding of this game now which is pretty neat.
This was an amazing game. In our group of friends we would help each other get S rank and progress in the story. Many many fond memories playing this.

Zeonic Front was one of the first PS2 games I was able to purchase for myself. I played it right after watching 08th MS Team, and I couldn't get enough of it. I think this game, along with Gihren's Greed, really helped to solidify my love of the mass produced and chunky mobile suits of the One Year War.
Bro… I struggled and came to love Zeonic Front as a kid. I still remember the soundtrack to this day, especially the music that plays during briefing before loading into the mission.

I LOVE Zeonic Front, one of my favorite PS2 games. You don't know true fear until you've played Mission 6 of Zeonic Front. If you know, you know.
I remember getting this back in high school, originally I wanted to get Journey to Jaburo because I saw an incredible trailer for it on the internet but when I showed up at EB Games only Zeonic Front & Federation vs Zeon were in stock. So, after MUCH deliberation, and after getting some advice from an employee who played both and said I should get ZF I decided to pick it up and almost instantly regretted it when I started playing... I wasn't at all familiar with that approach to combat and kept getting brutualy punished for trying to brute force my way through all the stages. Anyway, I eventually got the hang of it and when I did I definitely fell in love with the game. I actually ended up getting the other gundam games too and while they were definitely more of what I was looking for at that time, in retrospect I'm glad I picked up Zeonic Front that day. I may not have given it a chance if I'd done my research before hand. I'd say It's definitely my favorite gundam game as well, and I loved seeing a couple of suits & pilots from the game show up in Gundam VS on the ps4.
When I first booted this game, I never expected that I will see honest to God crossover between Gundam and original Rainbow 6. The planning, pilot selection - everything. I think this is what makes this game incredible.
Ofc that stealth mission where you have to gather intel on White Base will forever be one of the scariest missions for me even if it's not the hardest. Just idea of the fact that it's the first mission that you have to do on your own, without pre-planning and if Amuro, Kai, Hayato or Bright see you, you're pretty much dead, make it even scarier
I’ve waited ages for someone to make a video like this one! Zeonic Front is hands down my favorite Gundam game for so many reasons. I love that you even mentioned that the Zaku machine gun has no effect on the RX-78-2, which is something most (if not all) other Gundam games fail to consider into their mechanics. You nailed it sir, and I salute you!

Finally "clicking" with this game was one of my proudest gaming moments. I went from failing every mission, to the point that I was so confident in my routes and loadouts I could walk away from my PS2 and just let it play out. The Amuro mission where he's just picking you off one-by-one still sticks in my head til this day as one of the most devastating missions of all time.
The quality of the game intro/trailer is so high, you know they put the effort in. It has better CGI than some of the recent animes.
I got a sense that this game was inspired by early Rainbow Six games in late 90’s where you planned the strategy of how you team attack the enemies. It looks like a really special gundam game. Thank for your the video!!
Federation vs Zeon was my first Gundam game that I still play. I wish it gets a remake but allowing the customization and roster that Zeonic Front and Battle Operation have.
Scanning the white base mission was the hardest one for me as a kid. I spent so much time trying to scan the different mobile suits and getting kills, I finally look up on the neoseeker forums at the time the best way to do it was to rush scanning white base. Doesn't matter if you don't scan the other suits, it just completes the mission. I guess it goes back to being able to target a ship's bridge long enough results in a win condition. I vaguely remember there being some type of plot going on with one the pilots you end up getting too, but that's a bit harder to remember now.
ABSOLUTELY my favorite Gundam game to this day. Its hard to explain this to my firends when I show them the game nowadays. At first appreance it may seem really clunky and slow but once you get a grasp on the mechanics it's so rewarding. Also that intro song its a certified BANGER. SIEG ZEON!

I never played it due to me avoiding most Gundam games since I'm a small brain low-ttk game type person who ends up playing stuff like sims i.e. DCS or Arma, but I absolutely love Gundam's U.C. setting due my love for mecha and It's realism; something which Gundam has the opposite reputation of being. But seeing the way this game is played, the battle planning, sim-lite elements and whatnot; I'll definetely check this one out!
One thing that bothered me though, is seeing the radar mode. i'll probably figure out when playing the game, but is Minovsky polution a thing in this game? It's the reason why many MS don't have missiles unless they're IR or TOW. So it's silly that the radar works properly....
If you love UC, this is a must play and as far as Minovsky particles, yes they're implemented, each mission has a % score for them and is the reason I suspect that Radar is by far the weakest sensor. Sonar seems a little OP, as it's by far the most effective.

Thank you for making this video. The truth needed to be told. I remember getting this after Journey to Jaburo and loving it. I don't think I've really seen a game since that lets you plan out a waypointed strike before the mission even starts. The slow, gritty, deliberate pace of this game is *perfect* for showing gundam combat-definitely the most "believable" take I've seen on it in a game.
I feel like I missed this one during my childhood, I loved MSG shows, would have loved the game

I loved this game, and IMO it still holds up. This game really hit what I think a Gundam game should be like. Not every game should be you in a hero gundam.
I completely agree. One of mt favorite games from my childhood. It offers things no other gundam game has before or since. it's the closest thing we have to a one year war simulator. all the armor and weapons generally work as they should (beam weapons shooting through rocks is a bit much) and the ms feel like they have the proper wheight behind them. I too would love to see a modern remake with crossfire's damage model implemented on top of ZF's systems
It's definitely one of my favorites. Always liked that aspect of Gundam a lot the basic soldiers and combat of the mass produced mobile suits and vehicles supporting them. An ultimate version of this game would basically be my ideal Gundam game. The opening intro how they utilize tanks, artillery, jets and Mobile suits would be an awesome second zeonic front style game. Combined arms and have two decent length campaign for both sides with bonus content and missions like the simulators and unlockables.
I still have my copy of Zeonic Front and it’s amazing to play still, because the suits felt like they existed within the world and had reasonable movement.
And no other game, except maybe Federation Vs Zeon made the Gundam feel so terrifying because of just how powerful it is.

I credit Journey to Jaburo and Zeonic Front for being my gateway to my now life long love of UC Gundam. These stories were my first glimpse into this huge universe. Zeonic Front is the best interpretation of mobile suit combat we have ever gotten in video game form. It's slow, gritty, and extremely deadly and no other gundam game has ever done it better.
I didn’t really get to play any Gundam games, but I do love the anime. The one thing I enjoy about the main line of story is that it never goes over the top of everyone just fighting in mobile suits, but instead they’re treated like special armor units. To me the spirit of Gundam is that it’s good war science fiction and smart too by keeping the number of Gundams limited and showing that ground forces are always being used as well.
When I bought my first PS2, the first games I bought with it were DOA2 and this. Only happened to see Zeonic Front behind the glass and I just kinda jumped at it. It wasn't anything like what I'd expected as my only prior Gundam game experience was Battle Assault 1 and 2. But as I had actually played and enjoyed Rainbow Six I was pleased when I saw the comparison on the back of the case. The tactical combat, while unforgiving at times, made for a lot of replayability.
One thing I think doesn't get enough love and is one of my favorite parts of the game is the OST. This was one of Yasuharu Takanashi's earliest works (he's incorrectly credited on Wikipedia with Naruto being his debut work) and he would later go on to score for a lot of other big projects like Fairy Tail and Log Horizon. Zeonic Front's OST is just a pure adrenaline rush from start to finish. The whole thing just gets you pumped up.
The opening to this game is one of my favorite.

Dude, I loved this game. I remeber it being tough as hell. But man did it capture the tank feel.
Loved Zeonic Front back in the day. I made it a point to get S ranks on every mission to unlock the Mudrock. The trick was to try to solo as many missions as possible since your score tanked when losing allied units. Taking advantage of back shots was also paramount.
What was so neat about this era of Gundam games is that, much like LucasArts-era Star Wars games, the teams thought, "What if we take [insert game here] and put Gundam with it?" In this case, it's Rainbow Six meets Gundam, and it's awesome.
EDIT: I almost forgot! Not only are some of characters from this game mentioned in Code Fairy, but some of the cutscenes are repurposed and reused there, too, which I thought was a neat little callback for sleuthy fans like myself.
First Gundam game I ever played back in the day... Admittedly, I beat it in a weekend, but it was a fun one. As much as I'd like to see another Zeonic Front-esque game, I'd really like to see another from-the-cockpit game like Side Story 0079. It needed more weapons, MS and a longer campaign though. I think the ultimate Gundam game would be a mishmash- customization and variety like Crossfire, multiple campaigns where you play as ace pilots like Encounters In Space, being in the pilot's seat like Side Story, the ability to hear from your crew before sorties like in Zeonic Front and Side Story, a campaign where you play the grunts from either side via Fed Vs Zeon, different outcomes like in Zeta VS. Tall order (and an overly long comment) but hot damn it would be cool.

I have fond memories of the Dynasty warriors gundam games especially the first one where you have Milliardo, Domon, and Puru forming there own little group that play off of each other so well due to there contrasting but complementary personalities and that ending where Milliardo is convinced to do the Undefeated of the East routine with Domon and Puru so now there is a picture of the Epyon gundam mirroring the Burning gundams crazy stances with a Qubeley behind them
I was honestly disappointment how the later Dynasty Warriors Gundam games stopped doing stuff like that more and more as the series went on, it was one of the best parts of the first one.
@SOMEGUY7893 Oh, it was disappointing, but the main highlight from 2 was playing as Master Gundam and having that cut scene where he's criticizing Kira and Athrun for there beliefs while having and using so much power
And then there's Dynasty warriors gundam 3... that was just a disappointment
I've never played not one Gundam video game, growing up and I've never knew that they exist, and to this day I really know that there's Mobile suit Gundam video games, and giant Mecca video games in general.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam taught me that combining two things I love doesn’t always work. It definitely felt weird mowing down thousands of people with someone like Loran. I only played it two-player with my friend though so of course we were competing for the most kills hahaha
Zeonic front is my top most favorite mobile suit gundam game. It makes me love the Zaku's and all of its variants.

My dream Gundam game would be something like the Battlefield games but only grunt mobile suits. Maybe a custom ace every now and again but mostly mass production suits. No one off super prototypes, just grunts doing the work

Had Zeonic Front, and it was my first PS2 game. And it was the second piece of the gundam franchise I ever had any interaction with. First being the 1st 5 episodes of Gundam Wing on VHS. Also, I have to say that Zeonic Front has the best opening cinematic of any Gundam game.
I had a great time playing through Zeon front I remember buying it not understanding why Im not in a gundam and only in zakus and couldnt get pass like the mission with white base. Then few years later I replayed it and was able to pass it. Never really got anything close to this game ever again but this was a true gundam game. Maybe like that Gundam cross fire would be like an equivalent to the realism of how it would play out.
dang 2001 playing Zeonic Front on PS2. I feel old lol. Seriously one of the best Gundam games. Waiting for a part two or something similar.
I've got vague memories of Gundam as a whole. Seen so many different animes they all bled together. Yet for some reason I always liked the Zaku mechs.
Bought this on my 16th birthday the week it was released and I played the heck out of this game in my high school days. I always said this is the "Gundam game for people who like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six games". I still havent fully completed the game and thats been over 20 years haha. Thanks for the video man!

I absolutely loved this game, and as soon as you mentioned the first encounter with the white devil, I was nodding my head. I remember the "oh shit, oh shit, oh shit" when it comes out of nowhere.
A remake of this game would be amazing, especially with new context from Gundam: the origin and thunderbolt.
I never got to play Zeonic Front, growing up I only had a Hollywood video with a PS2 copy of Federarion vs Zeon. I always asked my parents to rent it whenever it was available.
I think the best feature id Zeonic Front that makes it such a great Gundam game is just customizable it is each mission can give you a variety of options on how to complete the mission at had, from picking different units, weapons, support items, even a route to complete the mission. Many games in the Gundam franchise gave features like this but this is the only game I believe that gives you all of these options making it a truly unique experience.

Man i thought this game was a childhood fever dream i had! I must of been alright at it cuz i got playable char and did the new game + campaign
Not just a remake of this game, or even sequel, but a lot of military games (tank, giant robot, or otherwise) need to take inspiration from this game for the characters, the gameplay, the AI squad use and flip flopping capabilities.

I wish more gundam games would be re released on PC. Love zeonic front! the dreamcast game was wonderful and one I still like to go back to.
