I recommend reading the manga Chars Deleted Affair as it covers what happened to Char in between 0079 and the start of Zeta. Its pretty good barring some very minor things.

UC0087 (Zeta Gundam) can be said to be Char's journey of reflection and atonement after reviewing his past addiction to Machiavellianism. It also explains why he was so reluctant to use his public real identity to make political appeals.
Yeah Char is a weird char-acter when it comes to his archetype, typically Anti Hero to Villain Arcs have a direct line from Heroism to Villany but Char is different, He starts as an Anti Hero, is a Heroic Mentor in the middle and then finally the Villain, which is unconventional, as a comparison, Darth Vader, who starts a hero then became a Villain, only ever redeeming himself in death, there is a direct throughline in that arc, Char flip flops over time instead.
So in short we wouldn't have CCA if Haman made sure that Natalie lived, giving Char something he never had since forever: a real reason to live and something to hold his craziness back, cuz gotta be honest by CCA, Char is totally bonkers, he don't have anyone close to him, no family, no one to make sure he is still somewhat mentally sound.
To be fair to Haman, she was a 16 year old that was pushed into power due to the events, and Char, who could have been her way out by taking the lead, refused to do so, and even did all he could to thrust her into the role.

Sure, back then Gundam will still exist but having no Char in the whole storyline will bring a big impact to the whole lore. In the last part of Gundam Unicorn he recovers his humanity when Amuro, Lala and his soul (classic Char) take him to beyond. Tha is one of the best finals that I have ever seen and the best character development in the anime or movies.

I kinda lost interest in anything after Char's Counter Attack, coz he's no longer here 😥, and also, the latter art style of the characters is rather "unstable". And considering he's the only one hounding this, the greater community isn't about to simply go with it either. They left it ambiguous since the end of CCA, and masterfully left it so at the end of Unicorn. There was indeed a sould there. One who adopted or even contains a chunch of Char's/Casval's soul, but I don't think it was truly the man we saw in CCA.

What this doesn't seem to answer is what he actually is. I've heard Char elude to not being human twice now, and in Gundam Unicorn the Vist guy says Char really was a ghost. Either way power to those Sigma Archetypes. He was and always has been a man alone.
That could be because of how much like his father was OR because of Full Frontal being his clone and no one knowing it. Either way at the end of Unicorn its pretty much shown Char and Amuro died during the deflection of axis, physically atleast.

What this doesn't seem to answer is what he actually is. I've heard Char elude to not being human twice now, and in Gundam Unicorn the Vist guy says Char really was a ghost.

That could be because of how much like his father was OR because of Full Frontal being his clone and no one knowing it. Either way at the end of Unicorn its pretty much shown Char and Amuro died during the deflection of axis, physically atleast.
