      Hi Andy. I’m now working in the office 3 days a week and back commuting through rush hour. So plan to record interesting events and put them on UA-cam. Trying to get them into the right format for UA-cam shorts and I’ll post shorter vids more frequently. 🤞🏻

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 It's ok I know the highway code, sometimes it seems you think pedestrians don't have a right to be on the road, but rule H2 says they can be, of course I realise it's recommended to use the path though 👍

      @@ChrisCaaa In the clip you mention there’s no incident, I just go around and go on my way. I just flag it from a safety and consideration point.
      Many comments I see on here mistakenly believe that pedestrians always have the right of way in the road. This is incorrect and a dangerous view, as it leads to a lot of pedestrians walking out in front of approaching cyclists rather than waiting for a safe gap to cross. The new rules in the Highway Code are rightly designed to protect the more vulnerable road users, but do not give blanket right of way, it doesn’t mean that cyclists have default right of way over all motor vehicles either. As a cyclist I must still take responsibility for the rules that apply to me, and I must give way when the rules state so, same goes for pedestrians. This is for the safety of everyone. 👍🏻

    • @ChrisCaaa
      @ChrisCaaa 3 місяці тому

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 I couldn't agree more, it's definitely a misconception that pedestrians think H2 gives them outright priority. But as you say it's our responsibility to look after the vulnerable road users, but then I watch your videos and you pass people so close. It's seems London has developed it's own understanding of order for cyclists. It seems to be the norm to treat cycle paths like race tracks.

    • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007
      @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007  3 місяці тому

      @@ChrisCaaa London rush hour (which you see in my video) is very busy as you might imagine. There are literally millions of commuters going in and out of the city each day. So there’s no way around it, you’re going to be cycling/driving close to lots of pedestrians. Responsibility is on all to look out for each other.
      The “race track” myth is another that comes up often in comments. Cycles look fast as they are small, but we’re not going any faster than the motor vehicles (when they aren’t stuck in traffic).
      People don’t bat an eyelid at a two tonne SUV (8 times more likely to kill a child in a collision than a typical saloon car) travelling at 20mph next to the pavement. Yet a cyclist going 15mph is accused of racing. Factor in that a recent government survey showed that 86% of drivers admit to speeding in 20mph zones (central London is pretty much all 20mph), then there’s a fair chance that two tonne SUV is passing the pavement at nearer 30mph. Add to the fact that a lot of drivers are distracted by phones and other devices when driving, it’s scary.
      Yet the bad rep goes to cyclists, who (on average) kill less than 1 pedestrian a year whereas drivers kill 450-500 pedestrians a year. Guess which ones make the front page of the papers though… 😉

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 It's very bad, and its deliberate bad behaviour by cyclists. I was walking past it yesterday, spotted a police van going after a driver for no insurance. 8 officers. I convinced one to walk the 20 meters to the junction. 100-200 offences in just 6-8 minutes. Included illegal e-bikes jumping reds, one pulling a wheelie in the process. Cyclists on the pavement, pedestrian crossings, going against the traffic, illegal left turns, huge numbers jumping reds, and that's without the mobile use [careless cycling], and no signals.

    • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007
      @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007  Рік тому +1

      @@Nickle314 There’s bad behaviour from all road users and pedestrians, but I have to agree I see a lot of bad cyclists put there. The “Boris bike” and rental electric bike (like Lime) riders are especially bad. I think these riders are not invested cyclists as such (like long term commuters), they are effectively pedestrians moving faster and seem to feel that pedestrian rules apply to them, rather than the rules of the road.
      For a long time I’ve said that the police should have unmarked cycle officers cycling the main commuter routes during rush hour in London. It’s something like an £80 on the spot fine they can issue if you are caught running reds, on the pavements etc. These officers would cover their salary in one week if they were enforcing this. If unmarked cyclists would start to follow the rules more fearing a £80 hit.

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 I did a survey of the junciton I was talking about.
      [see Gandalf's revenge on my channel]
      £1.2 million in fines per hour, going to waste. Now that's going for the max fine, but it makes the point. I make the observation that fines are the new tax.
      What was interesting was the ratio of cyclists offences to car offences. It was 50:1
      But the issue is, that unless the police act, nothing will change.
      Even if you only get 5% or less, behaviour will change. The message will get out.
      Plus you get the fraud with Deliveroo, Drugeroo, and the snatch gangs at the same time.

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 There is one other alternative to a fine. I think they should be offered the choice of a fine or a day on Cycle Skills course, TFL run them.
      Part of that course needs to be a section on pavements, pedestrian crossings, red lights, helmets, lights, dressing as a lemon, as well as basic skills.

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 I don't agree with your annoyance with the cyclists at the beginning of the video in those specific circumstances. If they are no pedestrians around the lights and vehicles with higher priority coming in from the the other lanes it is perfectly safe and sensible to run those lights. There is an advantage in that it is safer to cycle freely without having to jostle against 2+ tonne vehicles even if it is over a distance of 200 yards, particular in those wide intersections you may have to deal with 3 or 4 lanes of traffic if you want to go from one side to the other.
      I don't believe in blazing through red lights without a care, but there are merits to going through red lights in such instances, and even French laws allow cycles to go through red lights in such circumstances as studies proved it is safer for cyclists overall.
      For instance if I come to red pedestrian light with no pedestrians in sight or ready to cross I cycle through them. You can cover 400 yards riding in the center of the lane without worrying about vehicles parked in the door zone, those behind and on alongside you and the nasty potholes which are usually closer to the kerb, and that instance alone can easily be a quarter of your journey.
      I understand that going through red lights *gives cyclists a bad name* yet somehow drivers who do that are not seen as *giving drivers a bad name*. There is a *positive safety advantage* in cyclists going through red lights in specific circumstances. It just needs to done carefully and sensibly. Safety in this case means not going shoulder to shoulder with 2 tonne Range Rovers and even heavier buses and trucks.

      @@vfclists I appreciate your points, but I’ll not change my policy.
      We’re not in France and need to follow our road traffic rules. We want drivers and other road users to honour the rules so we must do so also.
      If we don’t it just becomes a dangerous free for all based on individual judgements on what is safe or not. As a nation we have a set of safety rules, tried and tested so I’ll stick to those and ask that other cyclists do as well.
      Running red lights is detrimental to cyclists as a whole, and rarely nets much gain for the rule breaking individual. I’d say 95% if cyclists that pass me whilst I’m waiting at reds I see later on my trip at the next big junction. As it’s all negative for very few positives then what is the point?

    • @vfclists
      @vfclists Рік тому

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 For me it is a purely statistical affair. The risk of being injured by a large vehicle is in direct proportion to the time spent riding in proximity to larger vehicles. Reducing that risk is an eminently sensible thing to do over the length of a journey when done judiciously and sensibly.
      I am not one to blaze blithely through red lights and I'm always observant when I do it and avoid it on busy streets. It looks like it was early morning at that junction well before rush hour, or some other roadworks or events had held up traffic.
      It is less of a time advantage and more one of having large vehicles on my shoulder for a reduced amount of time and consequently more relaxed sections over the course of the ride.
      As for the time gained or lost, like CycleGaz you ride harder and faster than most, and for many lesser cyclists maintaining momentum over longer stretches is a good enough reason. For all yoiu know it may add up for them over the length of the journey.

      @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007  Рік тому

      @@vfclists If everyone took the law into their own hands the roads would be chaos. It falls on all of us (cyclist, driver, pedestrian) to follow the rules.
      If a driver said “the road ahead was clear so it was no problem to quickly check my phone”, is that ok? For me very much not.
