Owned a 89 for a couple of decades and loved it. When it got wrecked by a red light runner I got a 97. They have been some of the best vehicles I have ever owned. Everything said in this video is spot on!!!
I've got a 1994 K1500 that I bought about decade ago when I was in college (wow do I feel old now). Had a new crate motor put in it then the tranny lost its reverse gear 30,000 miles later and I never got around to replacing it. I had it sitting in my barn on our farm, out of the weather for 3 or 4 years. This weekend I decided to get her going so I changed the fuel, changed the oil, drained the fuel lines, cleaned the air filter and new battery and she turned over after a little bit of gas pedal pumping. Now she turns over each time without fuss. Rebuilding the driver side door latch, rods, window motor and control panel this week, then have a new tranny lined up for the following week. She'll be back on the road in no time! Need to bleed the brakes too! One of the most reliable vehicles I've owned. Nailed a deer in it at 45mph and my wife thought it was a speed bump haha!
Hey, I was just given a 90 k2500 (6 lug) it's a ext cab short bed 350 auto. The transmission needs rebuild, not leaving first gear, and the interior is wrecked from both doors sagging and not sealing, especially the passenger side, I could basically see through. I need some advice on what to do, where do you find your parts? It'll be my first transmission job. 315k miles
I just picked up my 14th "OBS" and it's my first C3500 Dually Standard Cab with the 454, NV4500 5 speed manual and 4.10 rear gearing. At 70mph I'm at 2,500 rpm. This truck is 100% rust free and never saw snow or salt roads being a dedicated fair weather horse trailer hauler with only 78,000 miles. It's a real survivor and is taking over the heavy hauling from my #13 GMT400 C2500 SCLB which I put a NAPA Reman Vortec 5.7 in about 10K miles ago. If anyone tells you there are no more good OBS trucks out there, they're not looking in the right place! Thanks for this video First Place! Cheers! Zip~
Ive owned my 88 chevy Silverado stepside for over 10yrs, totally rust free that i bought here in Australia and i love it , ive been modifying it slowly and yes my biggest issue was the clear coat so ive been driving the car in primer for a while but luckily i did an apprenticeship as a automotive spray painter so ive got that covered

I should have bought a TBI but that’s ok.

I just bought a 1988 GMC LWB truck and absolutely love it. It needs a lot of little things, but is overall in great shape. One of the biggest mistakes I think GM every made was not putting the TPI in trucks, vans, and suburbans. That would have been a much superior induction system to the TBI. Just my thoughts.
Great info. I just bought a 1989 C2500 with 113K miles, 5 speed manual. Running good needs some minor tuneup. Last week, an old friend sold me real cheap $ a 4X4 C2500 , 5.7 , run’s but needs a lot of body work and new seat. Very little rust.

all one needs to know: while not 100% perfect (as nothing truly is) 35 years later, they are still one of the best built and most reliable trucks STILL on the roads of Canada and the USA today! (from the owner of 2 OBS trucks, 1989 C1500 and 1995 K2500)
I love my OBS..I have a 99 K2500 Suburban 454 lifted on 35's... 1994 K1500 Suburban lifted on 37's...and a 94 C1500 extra cab short bed that I'm going to lower a bit and put some bigger wheels on...great video I already knew most of that but it was a fun and informative video Thank You
I bought my 94 K1500 ext cab Z71 brand new the summer I graduated high school. In 2024, 316000 miles, rebuilt 4l60E, stock motor. Oil changes, greased fittings. This truck sat for 5 years in the weather, new battery fired right up. The usual Cbevy headliner sag, flimsy door handles etc have plagued tbis truck but I don't care. Still gets around 12-16mpg Wouldn't trade it for a new anything.
I wish I bought 5 of the square body trucks in the 90s when you could buy one rust free for $1500. I bought a new 1990, Silverado ,reg cab long bed 2wd with a 350. It was 3 tone paint. They painted the whole truck Crimson red, and then painted black on the top and bottom. After 2 years, the black started flaking off, showing the red. I took it back to the dealer, but since it wasn't showing primer, GM wouldn't repaint the truck. ! It ran 285,000 miles, one water pump, one fuel pump at 165,000. But, 2 transmission 700r4 rebuilds. My question is, if I found a good body truck before direct injection, would a Holley Sniper fuel injection fit with factory wiring harness for a high horsepower small or big block engine. Say, 350, or 454 engine.
Great 👍 content and I absolutely agree with your verdict....they are great trucks and if u want one u better get it now....I ❤ mine so much that I don't even drive it anymore 😀 on main roads ( Just in the neighborhood like a golf cart)
3 Years ago I bought a '94 Z71 silverado only has 48k original miles and is garage parked mint condition...Sits next to my 5.0 Eddie Bauer explorer also mint with 61k ....Guess I'm good for awhile 😊
Dont forget the change half way thru 07.... to that new new body style (nnbs). Owned 4 or5 nbs trucks. Grew up in K trucks. Lookikg at a obs now rcsb 4x4 but wanting it already ls/4180 swap.. or open my pockets for a lt4/10spd swap! ❤
Loved the video and subbed🫡👍 owner of an extended cab 1995 Chevy K1500 Silverado Z71 just installed SkyJacker shocks, rides smooth as any vehicle on the road and above average off road!!!
Nice video.. I think the prices for the OBS trucks are already soaring, especially the 89-93's for some reason....not just due to the current market rate. I personally have a 92 Mark/// that I've had since it was two years old. And I'd rather drive it than a new vehicle any day😊
I just bought a 93 c1500 gmc and I went to the pick and pull and got a newer grill from a saburban and I’m so stoked for it, already has a 4/6 drop on it but I had to put U bolts on the front of the leaf springs because it has such bad hop, the only thing I don’t like about them is if it comes with a nv3500 trans it might be the 36 I don’t really know much about them but they are brittle
1988 was the first year for that OBS design, but only on the regular cab pickups. Not to forget 1988 was also the first year for the optional extended cab too. Fast forward to 1992 the crew cab pickups & SUVs were also redesigned to that OBS design. 1999 was the last year for the OBS SUVs & half ton pickups although production of the new generation half ton pickups began in that same year. The OBSs produced in 1999 were called classics while the new generation pickups were being produced also at the same time. 2000 was the last year for the OBS three quarter ton & one ton pickups.
Nice, I have a 93 Cheyenne long bed, 4.3 v6 (thank God) single cab automatic. I was wondering why my truck has square lights instead of Chinese eyes. MFD (Oct. 1992)
@@dr.auggie1109 lol Chinese eyes. The single headlamps were base & were available on all trim levels except the Silverados which the Chinese eyes came standard on but optional on the other trim levels.
@@kevinrichards3288 thanks, makes sense. I'm from Texas and that's what we call em ha but I thought it had something to do with the reason my 4.3 v6 came with a oil cooler
@@dr.auggie1109 my favorite ones are the square bodies which were the last Chev & GMC fullsize pickups & SUVs right before the OBSs. They were built from 73 - 91, except the reg cab pickups "half tons & three quarter tons only" were done in 1987 & same with the one ton reg cab pickups in 1989.

He’s not wrong about gearing I have a 94 that’s open headers if you put it in 2nd floor it until 45-50 let all the way off and just wait for the “gun shots” 😂
Couple things. I built a 82 frame up and with bell tech spindles lowered 2'' and new coils and all steering Its still the best driving/handling truck I ever owned. I also bought a new 1989 with 5spd standard and a 2007 and you mentioned mpg. it seems like They nailed 19-20 mpg close to same mpg my 2017 crew now does. also had a new 2013 and it did 20mpg too seems like. What I dont like on the 1998-2003ish is the seats and interior colors are dog ugly especialy the ones in red and the blue interior ones.
I would like to build one of these, but not as a daily driver, more of a garage queen, that gets driven a few miles on Sunday mornings. I want a 2 door standard cab with a non step side short bed 2 wheel drive, with a 383 small block and manual transmission. Cowl hood, old school wheels, RWL tires, and a nice sounding exhaust. No worries about rust in Phoenix, AZ. It would be getting repainted, but with NO clearcoat. Are these trucks old enough to be insured and registered as collector vehicles? In my state, any vehicle 25 years old or older can get historic plates. But I need to actually be able to insure and register it as a collector vehicle so I would never have to deal with emissions test crap again.
Good info that most don't have. I have a 97 and need a floor liner, not mats. Something nice like weathertech but their stock doesn't go back to 97. Anyone know where to get?
Brakes on my 98 I went Detroit axles drilled and slotted rotors with there pads and LOVE them . On that I have had 4 of these trucks from 92-94 and 98 and love them it's a addiction they look damn good there easy to work on . My favorite is my 1998 white gmc sierra z71 3 door. Also have a 1992 long bed single cab k2500 heavy half ton on a 6 inch tuff country lift wife hates but I love it lol .
I've a 92 excab c1500 Silverado. The Interior is done. It's cracked all to hell and ripped while the door panels are held on by zip ties. Lol. The 350 was rebuilt 30k ago and trans 10k according to the previous owner ...It's a 8ft bed with tow package. A fn Boat. Hahah. But no smoke and fires right up. Will through the tires which are now too old to smoke right off. Hahah. I have it sitting now out back. Went and cranked it last week. It does need cooling flush from sitting 3 years prior. Cleaned up the moss and debris and put new battery. I plan on one day paining it or dropping the drive train into a better looking body. Lol. I may also then eventually rebuild if needed and get her to about 400 HP or 375hp. Nothing too crazy. Just like to know I can baby her and keep it a sleeper. I wish I had headers on it and maybe upgrade as is too many choices. Lol. I agree with the comment. I have no idea what it was bored to. There is no stroke evidence as the previous owner said. The harmonic balancer looks stock. Only reason I know it's rebuilt is it doesn't smoke. It's readibg 198k
My first truck was a gen 2 96 Silverado ext I got from my dad, should have never got rid of it but couldn't afford to drive it while Obama was in office and gas was over $4/ gallon Now I own 2 gen 1 obs trucks 92 Chevy Z71 350 93 Cheyenne W/T 5 speed The 92 has 6" lift 3" body lift on 35s, I daily it and find it to be very reliable and would drive it anywhere The 93 im going to LS swap and pair it to a T-56 magnum 6 speed but that's very $$$ so that's a distant dream for that truck lol
What price should I ask for my Original Owner 1990 Club Coupe Silverado C1500 with no damage history, no body rot, 5.7, 4spdOD kitted for 450hp, new Michelin LT's, colder than OEM 134a conversion, 40-60 split bench, Catalina Blue, CHEVY TRUCK?
Ya this is one thing I haven't saw mentioned much in the comments either. You want the manual transmission if you can find one b/c the auto's never lasted if you worked them much at all.
I believe there a better trans then the 93-94 4l60e. To make a 700r4 happy comes to govner spring and do the vett servo mod and do some research on a good lockup converter. I got one a lifted 92 k2500 on 35s . Gearing it for the proper gear size helps and a external trans cooler .
Yeah...nope. They would burn out in less than a year if you towed in overdrive, and/or over capacity. If you actually took care of the 700r4, you'd have one like mine, over 250k and still shifting strong.
I have a 1996 Chevy engine on a boat and I m getting quotes on a rebuild and there's a $1000 difference between 1995 and 1996, can you explain why is there's is a difference on the engines ? Thank you.
I have a 1996 chevy silverado 4x4 extended cab 5.0L and when I am driving down the road she is bucking and I replaced the plenum, fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter, she is still bucking. what is the problem?
There was square body then the other body style. Square body are million dollar trucks! For your family. Any one killed in square body from ruptured fuel tank in an accident is a million dollar check to your family from GM. Brakes do suck but a disc brake rear end from 04 ish is great interchange upgrade. Can get them for bout 150 to 200 bux and get some 2500 front rotors and have a complete 6 lug swap for all the newer wheels. Least that's what I did i on my 96 stepside
Good evening I just recently, purchased a 94 Chevy 1500. I was wondering if you might know a good place to get remanufactured or really good used or rebuilt engines and transmissions , or does your company sell them ?

Well said!
I still own a ‘95 C1500 that I purchased new. Love it!
I own a gmt800 but have had my mind set on a square body or gmt400 for awhile. of course im still keeping my 800.
Thanks for the sub!
My 1997 Chevy k1500 white straight body truck is a 3rd on owner w/187.000 original miles . I have buyers for it up and down the books
Starts up with just one start
Great video on the obs truck very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
I just got one a 1998 Chevy c1500 2wd with a v6. Just looking to keep it running good an working.
Nice video.. I think the prices for the OBS trucks are already soaring, especially the 89-93's for some reason....not just due to the current market rate. I personally have a 92 Mark/// that I've had since it was two years old. And I'd rather drive it than a new vehicle any day😊
It's 88 to 95 because they are tbi while 96 to 98 are fuel injection
@@Batman-ro7mh I love my 94 Silverado 5.7
@@irishuwould5185 I’m literally going to go buy one tomorrow it’s a nearly perfect step side example for 6500$
@@omarbueno9834 that’s exactly what I paid, mines a step side also extended cab
it’s also because people are now starting to appreciate the square dash
What to know: GMT400 trucks are the best looking, best running, most delightful driving experience, and you should definitely get one. Or ten.
11:10 4/4/2022 4K for those trucks
The 3500 made it to mid year 2000 as well. I have 2
I just bought a 93 c1500 gmc and I went to the pick and pull and got a newer grill from a saburban and I’m so stoked for it, already has a 4/6 drop on it but I had to put U bolts on the front of the leaf springs because it has such bad hop, the only thing I don’t like about them is if it comes with a nv3500 trans it might be the 36 I don’t really know much about them but they are brittle
Hey, that first truck, the red one is my truck lol. GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool, thanks!
What year ?
@@theevilempire6935 Mines a 90, Codington Red, dropped 6-9, trans planted a 502HO, 700R4 built ETC
@@kevinrichards3288 my tbi is throwing major codes so I'm going to do a natural asp carb swap. It's a v6 4.3 262ci I was curious about the cfm carb size ? What do u recommend from your experience. 670? 880? 720? I'ma 21 century mobile mechanic so I'm not familiar with thos
Mine had Is absolutely no problems until 260,000 so I ditched the 190hp tbi and put a 6.0 in it with 250,000, Turbo still on the work bench, till I Take it back out and gap the rings. But with 488 gears on 35's it's Pretty spicy already
Can't wait for the GMT800s to have their turn.
I have 91 Z71 and 95 6cyl. Both good trucks!
I'm building a 1990 sliverado right. Now, from the frame up.
I’m looking to get a red one for my second vehicle my first truck got totaled in a storm 2 weeks ago and this red k15 looks beautiful and my buddy dayly dives his
He’s not wrong about gearing I have a 94 that’s open headers if you put it in 2nd floor it until 45-50 let all the way off and just wait for the “gun shots” 😂
97 GMC K1500 SCSB SLE owner here, 6in lift on 15x10 and 35x12.5r15 ProComps.
I highly enjoy my 88 Chevy Cheyenne. Only 33,437 miles on the body and 26,000 on the motor and transmission
Nice!!!;
Post 96 obd2 change most the obs trucks were port fuel injection
Couple things. I built a 82 frame up and with bell tech spindles lowered 2'' and new coils and all steering Its still the best driving/handling truck I ever owned. I also bought a new 1989 with 5spd standard and a 2007 and you mentioned mpg. it seems like They nailed 19-20 mpg close to same mpg my 2017 crew now does. also had a new 2013 and it did 20mpg too seems like. What I dont like on the 1998-2003ish is the seats and interior colors are dog ugly especialy the ones in red and the blue interior ones.
Good trucks very reliable and easy to work on parts are plentiful
Storms blow my paint off but don't care 92 short bed inside and body are good!
I have a “99” obs 😮.. last body style of the dually. 52k OG miles
My first truck was a gen 2 96 Silverado ext I got from my dad, should have never got rid of it but couldn't afford to drive it while Obama was in office and gas was over $4/ gallon
Now I own 2 gen 1 obs trucks
92 Chevy Z71 350
93 Cheyenne W/T 5 speed
The 92 has 6" lift 3" body lift on 35s, I daily it and find it to be very reliable and would drive it anywhere
The 93 im going to LS swap and pair it to a T-56 magnum 6 speed but that's very $$$ so that's a distant dream for that truck lol
I be liking mine the transmission is weak but mine is built to the max
Have a 92 OBS silverado. The best.
lol im on my second one now i had a single cab and sold that to go out and find an ext cab with 4x4bc i like them.
Yes but Over Diver shouldn’t be used pulling are with a load ! Stayed in owner manual!
The 700-R4 transmiisisons were very weak and would burn out in less than a year! Other than that, I absolutely love the truck.
Lol ok. I have a 700-r4 in my 1991 Camaro. 33 years and still shifting great.
Yeah...nope. They would burn out in less than a year if you towed in overdrive, and/or over capacity. If you actually took care of the 700r4, you'd have one like mine, over 250k and still shifting strong.
Why do they call them OBS what does it stand for or means? Thanks
I have a 1996 Chevy engine on a boat and I m getting quotes on a rebuild and there's a $1000 difference between 1995 and 1996, can you explain why is there's is a difference on the engines ? Thank you.
I have a ‘97 Chevy Silverado C/K 1500 that runs but the paint and clear coat is peeling everywhere. It has rust too. What are these beasts worth?
Can you please do a video on the Chevy G series vans!
Vans are awesome and are already seeing an uptick in popularity... maybe the next "new" trend? Keep an eye out for the video, we are on it!
GM put HD brakes in most of the 2500 and 3500, so brakes were better in these.
Woh woh woh i have a 99 gmc k3500 crew cab long bed classic and its still a gmt400 so they made the 3500 in 99 and 2000
you can use nbs master for brakes
Fantastic video!!
I got 92 sierra shortly stepside 4wd and 96 Yukon shortly 4wd
99 2500 5.7s were obs I had one 1500s were nbs
Good evening I just recently, purchased a 94 Chevy 1500. I was wondering if you might know a good place to get remanufactured or really good used or rebuilt engines and transmissions , or does your company sell them ?

Are those 17 or 18 inch wheels on the red truck? I currently have 20 inch Torque Thrusts, and I’m considering going down in size in order to soften the ride somewhat.
Great information 🎉🎉
Thank you
I can't sleep what should I do? 8:38
Mr. Wobble Waffle, if you can't sleep, go out into the garage, grab a wrench, take something apart and put it back together. What can I say.. it works for me
I see what you did there 😂

Does anyone know what size those Torq Thrust wheels are on the red truck, 17 or 18 inch?
