Big wide seats, super comfy, and still looks great 25 years later. Pro tip: you can hide a compact 9mm in that overhead CD holder dealie.

My 96 C1500 Silverado 4.3L has 400k on the original engine/transmission and it still runs and shifts silky smooth. Have had it since 30k. Tail lights can be a problem until you come across a good circuit board set. And at this age, its the wiring that's starting to have problems. Keep changing the oil/transmission fluid and don't beat the crap out of your truck and your golden.

I don't have the pickup version but the SUV version. I own a black 1996 2500 4x4 Suburban SLT with the 7.4L 454 connected to a 4l80e trans and love it. Really reliable and easy to work on. This platform is a reliable workhorse while looking good doing it. It has 118k on it and I keep it clean inside and out. I keep it in the garage because every time it's in the driveway I get several people coming to my door asking if I want to sell it. I also have a 2004 1500 Suburban 4x4 with the 5.3L and a 4l60e trans with 206k on it and is still running very strong with all original drive train still in it. I love them both and don't think I will ever sell or get rid of them. I plan on passing them on to my boys later when they have their families.

I have a 2000 GMC C3500HD. They were sold as Cab & Chassis trucks. They're the same body-style as yours, except for a filler panel between the grill and bumper because of the massive frame. Mine has the short wheelbase with a utility bed, but I'm building an 8 ft. flatbed for it. It has the 7.4 Vortec (454), 4L80E trans, Dana 80 rear end, I-beam front axle with leaf springs all the way around. It was the first year for 4-wheel disc brakes. They're unique trucks.

  • @oddball0045
    @oddball0045 3 роки тому +6

Quick correction. These don't have LT1 engines, LT1 never came in any trucks. 96-98 use the "Vortec" small block chevys which still has a conventional distributor. They are considered vortecs because of the cylinder head design which is similar to the LT1 but without the reverse flow cooling system and made out of iron rather than aluminum.

I have a Blue 1997 Chevrolet Silverado C 1500 pickup that came with the Texas Paint Package that withstands Extreme UV rays and I love it. 190,000 miles on it and had to change the drivers side headlight today and will do the other one as well and the high beams too. I was warned about blowing the head gasket at 100k miles, and at 97k, it blew on me. It spent a day in the shop and $1,000 dollars later, I had the engine completely re-gasketed. I have also found that you can and will burn up the Gas tank sending unit if you run it with less than a quarter tank of gas in it. I have worked as an Electrician and have driven my truck in 43 states and worn out 3 sets of tires on it. The Steering is acting up a little now but I have new sway bar links and a power steering pump to change out, but as long as you take care of these trucks, they will run forever. I got mine with 25k miles on it and still paid something like $35k for it. I paid it off in 2004 and could not be more pleased with this investment as I still use it everyday to haul Sand, Crushed Limestone, Bricks and all kinds of Landscaping materials and Patio Furniture and it never acts like I have overburdened it. I love my Chevy Truck as it has hung with me through 3 divorces and never let me down.

You said the engines are great "just don't ask it to do what it's not meant to do".
I have a 94 C1500 Silverado I bought from my father in law. Stock it came with the 4.3L with the TBI. With a V6, rear wheel drive and stock leaf springs he cut a hole in the bed and welded in a hitch for a gooseneck which he used to haul a horse trailer full of donkeys, goats, generators and all sorts of heavy loads. The leaf springs would be maxed out and he would have it just screaming down the road hauling that trailer. Never a lot of maintenance, put 15 inch wheels with cheap Futura tires on it. That truck still did it's job, drove like a dream. Only major fix was he had the transmission rebuilt about 7 years ago. By the time I had it that motor was well on it's way out but still got me around just fine. Needed oil every week and the brake pads on the front were non-existent to the point of the metal part eating the rotor away. It got me around until I left for boot camp and left it with a friend. When she finally gave out was the day his wife couldn't get it up a hill without flooring it. He got a 350 for it and did the motor swap. Afterwards he took the 4.3 apart and found that almost all the piston rings in number 3 cylinder we're gone and had caused long, Wolverine type scratches down the cylinder wall. Other pistons were missing pieces of rings and they could be found in the pan.
I just think it's remarkable how that engine could be so abused and yet it would still run day in and day out. I will always love these trucks and the small block Chevy.
I'm happy to say now that truck has brand new suspension and brakes. A now carbureted 350 and an easier life getting me back and forth to work each day. Best vehicle I have ever owned.
Long live the Small Block Chevy.

neighbor has a 1998 Chevy Cheyenne has 450,000 miles on it recently just started burning half a quart of oil every 500 miles great truck. My mom used to have a 1995 Chevy Silverado was a great truck cant remember what the issue was that caused it to end up being traded in I think the tyrod went out and at the time she wanted something different. my dad had a 1993 Chevy I cant remember what it was it was a 2 tone blue truck manual transmission I don't think he had any issues with it but when moms went out he decided he wanted something else as well. Mom got a 2012 avalanche and Dad got a 2009 Chevy Silverado both are great trucks but I definitely agree the looks of the older ones are much better. Silverado only has 65,000 miles on it the avalanche has 130,000 miles on it all those miles on both were driven by the engine in the trucks and not towed behind a tow truck like a ford would be.

Having both an 04 Tundra with 320k miles and a 97 GMC k2500, for 1/2 ton work go Toyota. I have the top of the line trim on the GMC, but the SR5 trim on the Toyota still feels much better. Electric motors on seat adjustments don’t last, one thing I don’t like about it. The Tundra has better seats, better ride, and a smoother running engine even with a timing belt. But for towing, get a C/K2500.

My 1998 OBS had the same tail light issues. Taillights but no break light flashing I replaced all the bulbs and brake light switch, it turns out it was the brake fuse relay in the fuse box under the hood the prongs were loose not holding the square chip in tight. I'm going to be soldering for tighter connection.

I've owned seven obs trucks and still have two right now(98 k2500 4x4 454 & 96 k1500 350). Looking for a third(2wd single cab) to slam but the prices are skyrocketing.

If you're keeping the 8.25" IFS, then the '99 Tahoe / Suburban stuff is best for '88-'98 K1500s.

I own a 95 2500 and I definitely agree. Got it for 1500$ and it got better gas than my cousins 2016 ram 1500. I got rid of it recently only because I got tired of the pickup truck style truck still runs perfectly. If I had the extended cab would probably still have it. But regular cab is too useless to carry all my tools in

It is literally how the owner takes care of his rig. Anything can run great and be everlasting, if people would just take care of their rides. Currently, my 91 f150 and 94 1500 are competing with each other on which will last longer. So far so good, it's been a long time and they still start right up, and takes me where I want. But. Out of all the rides I've owned, and that's a lot, I've noticed that the vortec engines have a lot of factory faults. Sensors, relays, etc etc. Also. I will say, that the 350 tbi and the 300 straight 6 are the best engines.

My Father in law purchased new (white) 1990 Chevrolet WT-1500 4.3 V-6 engine, 5-speed manual Trans. You had to know this guy, he was an easy on the vehicle type of driver except he had no business having a stick - shift, however he always purchased manual transmission equipped vehicles $$$ anyway this man would lug the engine all the time by shifting way too soon, grind the reverse gear by not coming to a complete stop before grabbing reverse. This was the way he drove the truck from day one leaving the dealership all the way too 212,000 miles. At this point the truck needed major repairs but was still running and driving. Just think if he would have changed the oil at sooner intervals and not 10,000 + miles. This truck got no love at all. He would drive with black thick oil till the oil light would come on at stops, then and only then would he add oil to bring it to the full mark, and keep on driving. The end of his ownership with the truck was because the engine had passed a lot of oil into the exhaust system, plugged up the Cat Converter so it would not pass a California smog test, he sold the truck as is for parts or restoration.

The 97-03 f150s are good they got the 2valve 4.6 v8 which was a good engine. really reliable nice seats on the inside nice nostalgic 90s Amazon green colored color on the outside , paid two grand for a 98 it now has 187,000 on it, still runs smooth. only complaint is loose steering which I heard is common on fords. Getting any Chevy, dodge or ford truck from the 90s or early 2000s and restoring it is a way better option than wasting 50 grand on the new ones

My 94 I like it a lot don’t get me wrong but when you have salt on the roads, cab corners, rockers and fenders are starting to rust. I’ve had to put a alot of money in it sadly. Everything beside my front end work has been all done right in my garage it’s simple. Just too bad it burns oil but it has 150,000 on it and I have good bets it will go another 100k when I decide to upgrade to a better condition obs
