He wrote this when he found out his wife was pregnant.. he wrote it for his soon to be son... He died when his son was only 13 months old.. scary thing is the song is about not having enough time with his son... Gives one chills
My big brother was so protective of me and always looked after me growing up, even into adulthood. He spent his entire life alone. And then, in his 50’s, he got cancer. Having nobody to care for him and facing homelessness and cancer I moved him in with me to care for him. During that final 2 years of his life, he shared so many family memories with me and taught me so much, especially about God. Before he left this world, he left a folder on his computer for me to find after he’d gone. It contained a lot of his favorite music. Very personal songs that made him think of his family, and many of which reminded him of his baby brother. This was one of those songs. I’m 56 now. The same age my brother was when I lost him 8 years ago. This song will forever remind me of Tony. Man, I wish I could have just one more day with him.
I believe that no matter what religion you are, we will all meet again on a far golden shore in a land that is evergreen and peaceful. We will be rejoined with our loved ones and our ancestors, and we will feast and rejoice and be at peace. I'm so sorry for your loss and the pain you have endured, but always remember you will see him again one day, and you won't be sad any more on that day. Much love to you, stay strong, my friend.
My husband used to sing this to me. He passed 5 weeks ago and I hear this song in my head at least 7 times a day. I feel it’s him reminding me. We were married 51 years.
A little backstory Jim Croce wrote this song when he was 30 before he died as part of an album but when he died the album was incomplete so it was released as a single... And it became his greatest hit RIP Jim
Actually it was a little different. This song was part of Jim's first album, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", but was not released as a single and was not a hit, much as it deserved to be both those things. Then he released his second LP, the one with "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" on it, and there may have been one more hit song on that LP, so no one was thinking about going back to the first LP at that point to find a hit, until some movie producers picked "Time In a Bottle" as the perfect song for their TV movie, "She Lives", about a young woman dying of cancer. They had gone to their local record store and bought a stack of pop LP's in hopes of finding the right song for their movie, and sat down and listened to them all, and when they heard "Time In a Bottle", they knew they had their song. On the night the movie aired (sometime in late summer 1973), TV stations got tons and tons of calls from people who had seen "She Lives", asking where they could get the record. And it was about one month later that Jim died in that plane crash. After a long time of plugging away as an under-recognized performer, he had one year of great success, topped off by this song.

I did too.. It's amazing how many great songs are brought back to life with newer movies. Quentin Tarantino is famous for this as well.. All of his movies have classics brought back in them in some way. This and a few other songs remind me of the good old days when I was a child, where the world wasn't 1/10th as shitty as it is now. It's from a time when people would actually go out of their way to greet you with a smile instead of have giving dirty looks to you to say nothing, as if we were doing wrong. It's amazing what time does. I certainly wish I could turn time back to the seventies.. I would do so in a second just to start it over again and do all I could to keep society the way it was instead of allowing it to get where it is today.
It's a great song for Quicksilver. You seem him running fast, talking fast (especially when he talks to the trio when they first meet him at his house), but he seemingly loves these slow peaceful songs when trying to get out of the middle of a gunfight.
“But there never seems to be enough time to do the tings you want to do once you find them” If only Jim had known just how right he was. Taken far too soon, I wish we had 50 more albums from this guy. He’d probably still be writing hits for bands today.
Jim Croche left the earth way too soon but he sure left us with his beautiful music ! What a wonderful person and musician he is a legend and always will be as long as the people keep his music alive!
Today my sister passed away on February 12,2022 I was listening to this song and I was thinking about my sister she help me so much and I thank God for giving me a wonderful sister I was truly blessed I hope one day when my time comes that I will see her again 🙏🙏🙏

This song is an earworm around Mother's Day every year. I used to think that was weird, until I read that Croce wrote this for his family, upon the addition of his son. Thanks for saying what we all need to hear.
Ive loved this song for years but never have I felt it more than today. I lost the most important woman in my life today. My grandma made the hardest promise to keep by saying she'd live to see me graduate high school. And she kept that promise. I'll miss her for everyday I still live and if I could id spend the rest of my life on yesterdays where I'd visit her and see her just one more time and I know it would never be enough.
Bless you, sweetheart. I wish I could give you many hugs. You had a wonderful relationship with your grandma. That is so special and will never leave you. Wishing you many blessings 🙌

I think the song is about a pure and sincere love that you have for anyone. When you do love someone there doesn’t seem to be enough time to spend with that person (s).
I have always admired Jim Croce. I was born in 1969 and from 1974 I have listened to the radio. Casey Kasem. The Top 40. Had an older brother who in turn became a DJ for Casa Radio. I listened to every record he owned. From "The Beatles" to "Ted Nugent" Jim Croche was part of his world
I actually discovered this song because it was in my marching band’s show, and it brings up so many amazing memories from the season. I just wish I would’ve heard it before!
In summer 1973 I moved from England to live in Chicago. The first song I heard on the radio was Bad Leroy Brown, which also mentioned Chicago. I’d never heard of Jim Croce in England. I bought his LP, and came to really love Time in a Bottle. Just weeks later I heard that he had died . So sad.
This song made me think of my beautiful daughter who passed away at 11 months after a life in the hospital. Daddy is so sorry baby girl. I miss you forever. I can't keep going much longer
Hang in there, keep on living for her, and her memory. The world has hardships but you're stronger than all that. Keep going strong, you're doing great
I remember hearing this song as a young child and even though I couldn't put it into words...I remember this sad feeling and that the man singing the words was a bit sad too. It still makes me feel the same way decade's later. I didn't know he had died so tragically 💔
So much truth in this song. A person is wise to listen and take heed. No matter what we go through, I always think, what if my husband doesn't come home tonight (he is a police officer), what if I have to tell our 7 kids...daddy's not coming home ever again. Puts things in perspective. I was only 15 when we got married. By 19 we had 5 kids. One we adopted and twins. I'm 25 now,he's 31. We adopted a nephew and had another baby. Lots of challenges, LOTS of love. I love him more every day,as he does me. I pray we have decades more together
When my dad passed away almost two weeks ago from cancer, we played his favorite songs. Hearing is the last sense to go when you cross over. This was among his favorite songs. My mom didn't let go of his hand at all. She was by his side in death as well as life.
when I was young and he just died my life changed. his music bridged a generational gap with my parents and the older generation above them to have honest discussion about music and many other subjects. things that were not generally discussed were now topics of conversation. ideas were freely exchanged and opposing opinions were at least tolerated. god bless jim and his music

@Alexander Hey, it's been quite a ride over the 41 years. I was in the Air Force when we got married. Lived in Germany and Washington, DC and Minnesota. Retired to Michigan where we both became United Methodist pastors. Retired now and enjoying being together for as long as we have.
@Tom Spencer : It seems both of you did manage (and still yet) a fulfilling and blossoming family life. It feels so good and refreshing to read quiet sweet news.
Cheers ; )🍀
@@BumbleBeeOnTheBeach Yes we have. Been married 41 years, had two kids, now have 6 grandkids, lived in Germany twice, Washington, DC, and retired to Michigan. Thanks.

I came here for the beautiful song.

Yep :)
Well that's not nice
same
This is honestly the best running music now.
Lek true
heh unintended Quicksilver reference
It's a great song for Quicksilver. You seem him running fast, talking fast (especially when he talks to the trio when they first meet him at his house), but he seemingly loves these slow peaceful songs when trying to get out of the middle of a gunfight.
Sebastian Valle i
It really is. until I see something moving in normal speed and I'm reminded that I don't have Quicksilver's superspeed.
“But there never seems to be enough time to do the tings you want to do once you find them”
If only Jim had known just how right he was. Taken far too soon, I wish we had 50 more albums from this guy. He’d probably still be writing hits for bands today.
I think he did though
2014: Quicksilver X-Men: Days of Future Past 2024: Lilia Agatha All Along
I literally found this song of watching an edit of lilia
You are here for her too 😢
2011: Hangover 2.
Played this at the funeral of my first love. 41 years ago today. Rip Ruud. Never forgotten 💖
Jim Croche left the earth way too soon but he sure left us with his beautiful music ! What a wonderful person and musician he is a legend and always will be as long as the people keep his music alive!
@Andybetz.99 Hi Andy ! Hope you have a great day! 😊
Today my sister passed away on February 12,2022 I was listening to this song and I was thinking about my sister she help me so much and I thank God for giving me a wonderful sister I was truly blessed I hope one day when my time comes that I will see her again 🙏🙏🙏
So sorry for your loss
My heart truly does out to you for your loss❤
RIP
It will
It's the same god that took your sister away btw
This was my father's favorite Jim Croce song...he's now been gone for one year...I miss him.
Love you, Dad...I'll see you in the next life.~
I feel for you.
My fiancée died last august and I miss her dearly 😢😢😢
So so sorry. Try to keep the faith. She's still with you.💜
My mom passed away 11 years ago last month. This was also her favorite time. She played it for me once a few years ago and asked me to listen to the lyrics, but i didn't understand why. Today i actually listened to the lyrics, so now i know why she wanted me to listen to it. I didn't realize this song was for me at the time.
I meant favorite song. Idk how the word time got in there.
this song grabs time by the tail and forces it to slow down for a few moments, clears the mind and makes you think what's really important in life
This song is brilliant: slow tempo, haunting melody, beautiful lyrics, and SHORT, just like time.
I spent as much time as I could with my Dad all through his illness. He died right in front of me. This song plays in my head all the time when I think about him. I feel like traveling through time to be in a time and space where he still exist. I miss him so much.
Had Jim's 8 Track! Played this song while my husband was in Vietnam! I grew up fast, many hard times! Made it! Older now, these are just memories! Loved this song so very much!
One of my FAVORITE

Yes yes yes
Beautiful, I'm in tears thinking of my soul mate that passed away suddenly last year.
Hi Catherine
Jim was an absolute legend!! His music is timeless. We didn’t deserve him but I’m glad he did it
You know your getting old when you remember when this was originally released.
Great songs will always outlast the test of time.
IcanbePsycho , my mom had the 45 of this song when I was a child , listened to this many times . I was 5 when this came out
Outlasting the test of time was one what about past memories
This is the most well written song I’ve ever heard
When lyrics were still poetry
And now you've got "rappers" that haven't even said their first words yet
@Rohan B. : It still exists currently. Coldplay 💝
Today all we have is Butts and swear words
Allow me to introduce you to chill indie pop... (Ricky Montgomery: My Heart is Buried in Venice is amazing or pretty much anything by Hozier, Mitski, Rax Orange Country, Ricky Montgomery, Charlie Burg, or Matt Maltese is all really really good)
Heading Home by Alan Walker is actually quite poetic. I was surprised as the more I analyzed it, the more I realized how deep it is.
My boyfriend sent me this song after our first argument. Now I'm in tears after reading the lyrics and all these beautiful comments :')
:)
Sounds like a keeper to me. He has good taste

Anyone 2020
Almost 5 decades have passed but still my favourite song
Me too..65 is so different from..15!! I have had a wonderful life...I love this song.
WE KNOW IT'S 2020
Every time I listen this song - and I do it often - I think about her, and time we had together. If only I could have saved that time in a bottle...
I feel you. The person I had love had left me. She had moved to get a better job I still think of her day and night
Me too. I had her for a short time. I have a wife and child since then but I can’t ever stop thinking of the one that left.
Not even a single girl loved me. I treat them very good. But they love the piece of shits who treads them like a son of a bitch. God,why am i ugly? I only have you in my life.
This song is one of the few things that consistently gets me in the feels… it hurts to think about the inevitability of running out of time…
For my husband who left me suddenly 2 months ago today. He was my best friend, love of my life and soulmate. We had 10 wonderful years together and he showed me what true love was, Tim (Ease) Wood 5/10/64-1/22/24 gone but never forgotten.
I feel sorry for your loss
So sad for you. Time will make your grief manageable, so stay strong until you get there, and treasure the beautiful memories you so obviously have of him. Sending comfort your way from someone who has suffered a big loss too.
One of the greatest songs of it's era. Both chilling and beautiful.
This was played at my grandpa's memorial service and when I listen to it I remember those I've lost...
I first heard it at a wedding when I was about 11. Love as much now as I did then. I think I or a sibling bought the 45 after the wedding. I like to save thyme in bottles too.
I don’t care if this is a sad song, I think it sounds really sweet
This song is an earworm around Mother's Day every year. I used to think that was weird, until I read that Croce wrote this for his family, upon the addition of his son. Thanks for saying what we all need to hear.
Time is something money can't buy..... live life now----- you never know how long......
What a great song, I’m here studying it to play on my guitar for my grandpa who loves it.
Hey there,
That is a beautiful gift you’re giving him!!!
💟💟💟
Parents and grandparents just want time together, with those they love, as that is more precious than silver and gold.
You both will cherish these memories.
If I may make a suggestion, if you don’t already do it, please record (audio, better if by video, so you can see and hear him long after he’s gone) EVERY conversation y’all have together!!!
Our loved ones are only here for a short while, though through salvation, we’ll be with them again… Praise be to God for that!!!
Anyway, thank you for sharing.
Take care, and God bless.
✝️💟🛐

Did you ever do it?
Try a Spanish guitar...more difficult, but more beautiful, too !
😢😢😢... Heartbreaking song. Without your control on your mind, you will certainly think what if there will be no tomorrow for you.
Listening and crying..per usual. Beautiful song.
This was the song my mom used to put me to sleep to when I was a baby.. I’m having a really rough night and I came to listen to this. Brought so many tears to my eyes. This is such a beautiful song
I've been looking for this song for years, it played at my grandmother's funeral and it's been an earworm since.
This was one of mother's favorite songs. Croce was her favorite artist. She passed recently. This song is...perfect. put the opening lyrics on the keepsake urns.
Seeing this was wrote for the songwriters son before he died made it hit so much harder. I’ve recently lost a good number of family members to different varying accidents, and today marked the loss of another. This song really helps me think about how I’m gunna wisely spend my time with what remaining family I have now. Rest In Peace to all of them. I love and miss every single one.
the man I fell in love with promised me 40 years. After only 12, his poor body couldn't take struggling with COPD anymore and he is free now, flying with the angels. RIP, Robbie...You WERE the one I wanted to go through time with... I love you.
This was my mom and dad's wedding song. I haven't talked to them in over a decade. But this song... way too many emotions to express when I listen to it.
I love these old songs ... it reminds of all the memories of being a child, having mum & dad in my life
I Love this song every since
I heard it came out And
I heard on the stereo
Still PRICELESS after all
These's Years
I still Love This Song and
Always will ❤
If it wasn't for testosterone I would be crying a river of tears, I'm crying but the tears won't come out😿 This song reminds me how precious time is and how no matter how much you love someone, there's only so much time you can spend with them😭❤️
Jim Croce again nails it with his lyrics and singing talent. Says what is in the heart and mind of every young lover couple!

@Eric, thanks for the backstory on this song, didn’t know this and since I have kids it makes you feel different. Typing this gives me chills. Awesome song
I think the song is about a pure and sincere love that you have for anyone. When you do love someone there doesn’t seem to be enough time to spend with that person (s).
What a masterpiece. I've literally listened to this on repeat for 12 hours. Unbelieveable thank you Shazam

How could anyone put a thumbs down to this beautiful song that transcends time? Beautiful ❤️
The ones that have no taste in music at all
Not necessarily. It may have been painful to listen to this. It's very emotional, and beautiful
This is so mesmerizing, I wish I could go back then in time and relive all these years again having my present conciousness
beautiful song honestly. smooth, soft and relaxing

I have always admired Jim Croce. I was born in 1969 and from 1974 I have listened to the radio. Casey Kasem. The Top 40. Had an older brother who in turn became a DJ for Casa Radio. I listened to every record he owned.
From "The Beatles" to "Ted Nugent" Jim Croche was part of his world
This song is Jim telling us he wished he had more time to sing songs for us.
MrArcticShadow beautiful explained!
Amen
I actually discovered this song because it was in my marching band’s show, and it brings up so many amazing memories from the season. I just wish I would’ve heard it before!
I'm gonna listen to this when I save my dad who can control metal from the pentagon
lol
Where he is held captive because he killed the president :P

Right
I think I just pissed myself

Keep going strong, you're doing great
You can go on I lost my daughter three years ago. I think about her every day. Love the Lord and your daughter and you will be fine .
This song wasn't one you knew, but it definitely describes how i feel about not having you around anymore.
I miss you grandma.
So sorry for your loss..🌷👀✨
I remember slow dancing to this song at my wedding reception. That was possibly the first time I'd ever cried in front of so many people.
Mine the moment I saw my soon to be wife coming down the aisle
The melancholy of this wonderful song melts together with the sad fact that he died so early.
Can't compare this great song to any other music today it's brilliant..Jim and Maury thanks so much
when I was young and he just died my life changed. his music bridged a generational gap with my parents and the older generation above them to have honest discussion about music and many other subjects. things that were not generally discussed were now topics of conversation. ideas were freely exchanged and opposing opinions were at least tolerated. god bless jim and his music
This is a masterpiece
The lyrics made me acknowledge the kind of time I wish to spend with my wife who also retired 6 yrs ago. So I’ll beg the Lord above to help sustain
a more deeper spiritual love and care that she truly deserves from now to eternity.
