I just want to thank my old man for showing me this... Music has been a very important friend in my life, and this song is very special to me. We live in Colombia, my father could not speak English, but I remember one time that he put this on UA-cam in the T.V. He said: "Escucha esto, es tremenda historia" (Listen to this, it is such a story"). He didn't understand a single word, but the video gave him the clues that he needed to consider this song a "masterpiece". You don't need to understand music, you just need to feel it.

The lyrics are so simple but true. It's him observing the average life of average people, yet the song is so above average.

They're truly average people, living an average life, but every once in a while they get to experience something quite wonderful.

I awoke halfway through this song. And I'll never forget it. BJ's Moscow concert was one of the only CDs that survived our house being broken into back in 1990 and I still have it. My favorite version of Goodnight Saigon.

I once upon a time was one of these men. I got out of the marines in Sept 71 and people really didn't like us Vietnam veterans too well. For 10 years I worked during the day and closed the bars at night and then one day this lovely woman walked into my life. I've loved her ever since. Within 3 months of our first date we were engaged and 9 months after our first date we were married. We have been happily married since Sept 3, 1981. For some time she would when we went to bed have to listen to my rants about the war and coming home. After a while when I calmed down she would kiss me and hold me. I guess I had PTSD and just didn't know it. Now she is in a nursing home with dementia and MS. I see her every day but I miss her so much.

He didn't completely make it up, most if not all people r baised off real people he knew
Billy Joel is amazingly talented. This song isn't a story he made up, however. This is based on his real life experiences with real people. His talent comes in expressing that with his songwriting and performances.
