I know it from They Both Die at The End. This book killed me its so tragic, but I loved every single second, and it teached me an invaluable lesson. Live life, take risks, enjoy it while it lasts. Make friends, get yourself a partner, go travelling, have a family if wanted, get a house or new apartment. Live every day to the fullest, because we all die in the end.

I knew this song existed and I liked it, but it never had an importance in my life until a few months ago. I was with all of my closest friends and we were on a lake, all spread out. Some of us were in the middle of the water on paddle boards, others were floating, or sitting on the dock. Nobody was really talking, we were just appreciating each other’s presence. But then all of a sudden this song comes on. We all look to each other and start screaming it together. We didn’t even have to say anything we all knew the lyrics. We sat there for 8 minutes singing/ screaming with each other. Even though we were far away. At the time it was just all fun but looking back, it was such an important moment in my life. Thank you for this song ❤️

I recall many years ago about an article of a proposed TV series that never took root. Too bad. The series was about a jukebox that was a time machine. The concept was that when one played a song, the jukebox took you to that time and location when one first heard it. Such as the time in the fall of 1970 coming back late at night from a high school football game in the Charleston, SC area. I was sitting in the back of a buddy's car as he drove home. The radio was on and I heard for the first time James Taylor's "Fire and Rain". I bet other people can recall similar experiences.

This is my little story, with my little brother and this song. One crepuscular afternoon, returning from bringing him from playing soccer in an academy (he had played very well and was tired). I gave him my avomes, but I wanted him to listen to this song that I had fallen in love with. He enjoyed the song without any more surprise, it was normal. The song was so long that it covered the route of the court to my house, at certain times I listened to the song as well and accompanied singing. But when I reached the last part of the choir, calm and melancholy, I sang it with much tenderness, for his heart broke and he wept bitterly. I heard this when I was very young on one random day when I still thought it was truly possible for me to list every song I like in one book and this was one of the titles I wrote in it that stood out to me. I loved it ever since. Because I found the lyrics to be very fun with it's use of imagery. I took the message of it as a love song for joy in hardship and music in life well lived as a child. " this'll be the day that I die" is also a clearly reference to Buddy's song "That'll be the day" .... he had a 18 month career. In that time he created a body of work that changed popular music forever and influenced almost every great rock and roll artist to follow him.

Almost 78 now, and I've never cared much for pop music. I just now listened to this song all the way thru for the first time because of a prophetic dream about "American Pie" that someone in Australia recently had. I find the song weirdly unsettling, but also brilliantly contrived poetry.

Solid state transistor radio tied onto my handlebars, rain ,snow ,wind sweltering sun. This is the first time I've ever listened and read the lyrics properly. A young kid off a council estate full of dreams, drove my Chevy to the levy stuck with me, I've had a few two stepside pickups and a few cars many years ago, this classic song takes me straight back to a very uncomplicated happy time in my life 🙏amen ❤.

I know a way to make it even more depressing the day the music died was an event in the 1960s. It was when 3 of the most rock and pop cultured people died in a plane crash. The part of the song where it says “Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye” is based of how they were in the tour bus on a freezing day and the bus got froze so it broke down and they gathered together to take a few shots of alcohol.

I heard this when I was very young on one random day when I still thought it was truly possible for me to list every song I like in one book and this was one of the titles I wrote in it that stood out to me. I loved it ever since. Because I found the lyrics to be very fun with it's use of imagery. I took the message of it as a love song for joy in hardship and music in life well lived as a child. So even now at College, I still look fondly at the hours I spent playing this song in loop.

I love how this song could have easily been just a guy complaining about how things were so much better in his day, but instead it ended up being a near timeless history lesson. Within 8 minutes Don McLean highlights the next 10 years after that plane crash in 59, as all of the Innocence of early rock and roll faded away and rock artists changed their focus to protesting the pointless war that was going on at the time. It calls attention to the Manson killings, as well as a brutal murder at a rolling Stones concert. It's as if after that crash happened a line was drawn that we've never really been able to come back from.
