Real life garage show! As a life time mechanic recently retired I get a kick out of watching these shows like this instead of the fake drama "we're going to lose the shop!" ones. Might be tedious to some folks but not to me. Loved the washer on the vise grips so you could tap it, never thought of that one before!
I think you’re one of the only famous wheelers on UA-cam actually showing what the real process of wrenching is like, the nitty gritty. When I watch this, it reminds me of what I go through on mine lol.
God…. I miss you and Dave on DED. I needed intense therapy and powerful drugs to help over the hump. I’m so glad I found your channel. You two had such great chemistry and so much fun together in DED and was so evident on screen. I subscribed to Dave yesterday and you today. I now watch DED reruns many times over. I’m 80 yrs old, live in suburban Philly and own a minivan AND STILL enjoy all your shenanigans. Thanks for all the time producing this great content.
Hey Fred Im just some random fan of what you do, but Id like to be encouraging! Im extraordinarily broke, so I get to live through your experiences vicariously, THANKS!
I find that when my projects sit for long periods of time, and then I start driving them again things start leaking everywhere. I also feel like we're going to be seeing the Ultimate Summer Camp Jeep return to UA in the future.
This was a sweet project. It was something that needed to be done, and the difficulty seemed realistic. It makes me feel a bit better about taking two days to put shocks on the front of my truck after I had to cut off the sway bar links and get new ones because they were rust welded together.
The manufacturers will pull stuff like that to save time on assembly. When I can, I will tap such things for a standard bolt/plug. Press-in oil gallery plugs are another good example.
Thanks for sharing the tip about buckling up when testing on the lift. Never would have considered that before, but I started seeing all the potential dangers as you were putting the belt on
I have rebuilt a few 4L80E transmissions, and when you said you where going to swap out the late model shift shaft for the early model shift shaft the first that came to mind was the problem you where going to have with that swedged nail. Also, the shaft is flare out a small amount, and requires being ground down to clear the shaft case bore.
we call that ingenuity, my friend, every hard-working mechanic out there has run into stuff like that. we come up with some ingenious ways to fix it. I ask you how many times have you use a 12 penny nail to lock down a castle nut on a wheel bearing or bought a car and later on, you, pulled it down to do maintenance, and it had a nail instead of a cotter pin.
That's an awesome car! It has been great seeing you build it. I have learned a lot from this series. It amazes me to see how you are able to figure out what the computers program was. You rely present things God so it's easy to follow and understand. I think it would be fun to see the Magnum and Idenity Crisus run against each other. You have to rework the truck rear suspension first.
A TH400 shifter shaft is retained in the case w a "nail" which has NO knurling , OEM design. many GM transmission governors use two "nails" to hold them together.
Recently did a selector shaft seal on my old ford fmx. 30yrs wrenching and I’d say it was the most unpleasant experience I’ve had. Between the fluid and juggling act of alignment and detent spring that would blow it all apart it was a nightmare.
PLEASE tell me Summer Camp is going on UA this year!! My favorite build that you've done and it would be awesome to see it back on the UA, even as a crony rig bringing up the rear, haha.
For the transmission pin its possible that the suspension pin or shock shaft from a RC car would do the job to. There are many different styles, hardness's and sizes so as to the specific one I cant say but for odd stuff like that never count out your local hobby shop.
Cool! I dont have 4x4, neither place for rock crawling, but always enjoy videos from you! And as soon as figure out that ded production on mt channel stopped, i cancelled my subscription.
Punch a hole in the oil filter and let it drain for a few minutes...beats the heck out of oil going down your arm. Been punching the oil filter for years...very little mess.
I've had the same issue with the pin that you did and I had to drill a little whole in the end and used a little bolt in the hole I drilled and a slide hammer and it popped out with the first tiny tap from the slide hammer
As bad as that was you are not dealing with rust. As you know it gets everywhere and causes problems everywhere. Besides you can sing While My Transmission Gently Weeps.
Every 5 minute job is one broken bolt from becoming a 3 day ordeal. Way to go persevering through it! 👍🏻
Amen

I still love to Watch Fred. Do miss his little buddy
Hey Fred

Absolutely loved and miss that army truck. That was cool. Miss Dirt Every Day too. You guys are great!
😂😂 “The Reckoning”. That’s a good replacement word for what actually happened!
I find that when my projects sit for long periods of time, and then I start driving them again things start leaking everywhere.

This jeep is still my favorite DED build!

Still my favorite jeep you have built. Love it!
13:00 Ditch the White board, Fred has cardboard and a fat sharpie! BTW sorry for your bad luck with the pin but glad you got it out.
Thanks for sharing your talents adventures and the struggles too!! It's good to see it ain't all smoke and Hollywood mirrors.

You and Dave should make some wheeling videos again! 🫡🤘💪
I have fu... reckonings like this pretty much every time I wrench on something. Last time it was the exhaust manifold stud...

As a Cummins builder I recommend Rotella T6 15-40 every time. Keep using it!

Good luck with your jeep. It looks pretty good
Good thing you have lots of vehicles so you weren't trapped at home for this hour + long project. 😁
Fred , you've invented a new word ! "Wreckoning" a one word substitute for "Murphy's Law" , you and your Friends solution is my kinda fix .....
Slide hammer on the vice grip helps

Thank you, Fred! Keep it comin!
Good job Mr Fred.
Fun video. Informative to see that its not only me that stuff happens too
stack mig welds on to of the broken head, then weld a nut on it for a proper grabbing spot.
Recently did a selector shaft seal on my old ford fmx. 30yrs wrenching and I’d say it was the most unpleasant experience I’ve had. Between the fluid and juggling act of alignment and detent spring that would blow it all apart it was a nightmare.
The story of my life... There's always something!!!
Castrol rules! Also Rotella rules! All else drools!
Long live Summer Camp! It’s a tie for that and Watsons convertible for UAs best.
PLEASE tell me Summer Camp is going on UA this year!! My favorite build that you've done and it would be awesome to see it back on the UA, even as a crony rig bringing up the rear, haha.
It is amazing how long they will drip transmission fluid.
My whole DIY mechanic life - is the reckoning. I feel you.
PS - could you just cut the OE shaft? 🤔

I have Gnomey Gnome's that wreak havock on my day...freaking Gnome's....toobox Gnomes are the worst too. 😫
Didn’t realize this was the engine from the Alabama army truck, I always wondered what happened to that rig, it was my kid’s favorite
Favorite jeep out there
Would love to see this jeep on ultimate adventure 2023
Another good one 👍👍
Bring back Dirt Every day!!
Love this content fred
YES 🤘😁 I love the summer camp Jeep
good job fred
Maybe you could have welded on a little nut to that retaining pin?
Fred, you're old fashioned 😉
Should have tack welded a nut to the shaft!
At least it’s good to know I’m not the only person these things happen to.
Nice job
Is Summer Jeep going on UA? I like your rambling
Ugh, I hate when stuff like that happens!
Is running Rotella a farming thing? My dad ran Rotella in his dozer and tractors on the farm. So he naturally ran it in everything else.

Why not zip off the end of the shifter rod and thread it?
What if the nail rotates? It looks like it will fall out.
Rotella for the win it’s the best
Hmmm…is the Summer Camp jeep getting prepped for UA2023….🤔
Whatever happened to the alabama truck
Wouldn't it have been easier to just cut the shaft while it was in the transmission? I do enjoy your videos though, especially the Jeep ones...
How are you not having gas clogging problems after letting them sit for months or years?
Nailed it
What frame is under the Jeep?
Just wondering what application that steering box is originally for?
Does this mean it’ll be on UA this year??
It’s awfully quiet for such a monster engine.
go to pull a part get o few of them for like 2 bucks
Get that rig back on the trail..
I've had the same issue with the pin that you did and I had to drill a little whole in the end and used a little bolt in the hole I drilled and a slide hammer and it popped out with the first tiny tap from the slide hammer
My turbo 400 had a finish nail right from the factory:
Do you still have Clampy?
"It got pretty rough."
The wreckoning
That broken pin is likely the work of some fine mechanic screwing the next guy. This stuff happens all the time in the trades. Those people are Hacks
👍👍😎
😎😎😎👍👍👍👍
Woo! First one to watch!
As bad as that was you are not dealing with rust. As you know it gets everywhere and causes problems everywhere. Besides you can sing While My Transmission Gently Weeps.
This episode has mad drip ..i think that's good by todays standards but I dunno =)
20 minute job..... 8 hours later.
A manual transmission would fix that!
nobody died!
First
Way too much chatting.
What is the can on the front driver side, thanks.
