Dirt Daily. Adding RCV Axles to a Jeep JL Wrangler
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 лис 2023
- My 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler, affectionately known as NewbSock is getting some front axle shaft upgrades from RCV. These replace the u-joint style axles with a constant velocity or CV joint and RCV claims these axles are strong enough for up to 43 inch tall tires!

about 4 mins in Fred ' i can wear this orange hat all day ' .... seconds later in next scene Fred's wearing a black baseball cap .... love it
and then the Orange Beanie is back .. lol
I'm sure the rules state that you can't wear the orange hat until the orange boot has been installed.
Thanks Fred , real life installs are always great
I've always loved what you guys do. I'd love to have the job of just building whatever I want. I realize there would be a lot of anxiety that comes with deadlines, but you and Dave always made it look easy.
Same lol idk if anyone can recreate their recipe lol
Thanks for answering the question of "Are RCV axels really worth it?". If you say they're good, that's a solid yes for me!
Rad video Fred👊🏻. Thanks for the detailed install👍🏻😊
Love to see Fred dressed up like the part he's installing!
And sometimes you point the shop heater at it to soften the plastic
Excellent; I've never seen this explained before. It was a mystery to me before. thanks
Great job Fred.
I put RCV axle shafts in my 07 JK about 12 years ago. They are awesome!
Thanks for this one, super well done!
If you're thinking of using Teraflex BJ. The Teraflex ball joints will not work with the RCV or 1410 Ujoint axles. The Zero fitting are way to tall.
You need to keep an eye on the boots. They may split with age. In 12 years I've only had to replace them once.
One of the worst things I've ever done in life was getting addicted to Jeeps. The addiction started off innocently enough with GI Joes in the mid 80's and the a Jeep remote control in the late 80's. However in the mid 90's I was introduced to a dealer while stationed in San Diego. I've been broke ever since.
Man so good to see you Fred. I (being a caveman) did not know you had a channel. Was waiting for the next season of DED and when looking found your channel. Question: does the boot just snap into place? I thought there would be a clamp like a hose clamp or something to hold it onto the bell? sorry if i just missed it. Merry Christmas
Thanks Fred
They finally made that boot tool? Several years ago I was at Goatbuilt and they built a very similar tool for boot installation. Those boots are a pain in the a$$.
hey fred awsome vids ! glad your making videos again i miss ded, also i have a 06 ram 2500 with u joint front axles , any tips on a cheaper upgrade , like some dodges have cv axles at salvage yards are they better than u joints just the factory ones ?
300M has a tensile strength of 300ksi. 4340 is 200-240ksi.
Wildly oversimplified but Loctite is glue.
Fred must have been sitting on this video! The wall is right by the lift still.
Fred, great video
Why don’t you have the mud cover behind your brake rotors?
Good vid Fred! 🤘🇨🇦 A lot of IFS guys that run RCVs complain about the boots leaking/breaking on such an expensive axle, any ideas about that?
Curious how these compare to my factory cv front shafts in my 22’ Mojave. It was a pleasant surprise imho to see those when I picked up my JT
I was the 667th viewer of this video. Not today, Satan! Not today!!
Hi Fred. Thanks for your video. I installed the same RCV's on my JL Rubicon. I noticed after a couple months (although may have been there since the beginning) that the RCVs will click-click during slow turns, or pulling into a parking space. Many say that the clicking (presumably the balls moving around in their cage) is one of the traits of RCVs. I grease them regularly (at every oil change), and other than that, they've been running great. Any insight into their click? Thanks
Fred Williams, great video content.
I’d like to run 43” tall tires on a Mercedes Metris van. Would you recommend the RCV axles on this application? Thank you,
Hell ya Fred
FRED - question, sir. Would you put a small clamp on that boot to assure it does not move just like on a passenger car cv boot?
I am due for u joints on my one ton, Dana 60, this looks like a good idea, but how many times have you seen leaky cv boots? That can be messy.
Has anyone done this to a drive line yet?
How often do you grease them and was that a needle tip? Also do you ever disassemble to grease them?
Fred what’s your opinion on fixing leaking rear axle seals on 03 rubicon? Seems to be a common thing? I’ve replaced them once already and they’re leaking again. Only 30,000 miles on Jeep. New better axles? It’s annoying as shit. Anyone else have opinion?
What’s the real differences between the RCV and a birfield/marfield setup on a Toyota?
Have you ever found that external axle seals are necessary?
The biggest reasons I have never wanted RCV's is because of the grease mess/ leaking boots. Can anyone comment more real world experience with these axles in a solid axle application? Are they a huge headache of a mess like the internet says? I had this same axle in my last JL and the 1410 full circle clip u joints never gave me any issues for about 5 years.
What jk with a Cummins???
Go watch S3E6 of Dirt Every Day. Fred takes his Mom wheeling for Mothers' Day. It's a great episode. He built a 5.9 Wrangler from a 2WD JK and a Ram.
do a google search for "RubiWagon"
I’ve been following you forever I don’t remember ever seeing that but then again, I drink a lot
@@justemptiedeverypocket9520 It was from before DED.
we built it in 2007 @@justemptiedeverypocket9520

@15:31 …”needs TO BE convinced”, not “needs convinced”. This affectation involving awful grammar seems to have penetrated the vocabulary of every UA-cam content creator. Sounding ignorant is not pleasing.
😴
Shut the hell up @mikek5298 this is a great video.
