After seeing Tony Angelo’s new gig released yesterday, hopefully Hagerty reaches out to you & Fred as well! If not, I’ll still be here and liking that smash button on the regular. 👍
im curious to see where it goes. thanks.
Hagerty do seem to be targeting these new type of upcoming channels from ex Motortrend staff. Being a Aussie I lost my Motortrend streaming 2 years ago so the more content from guys like Dave, Tony, Fred and even David Newbern who looks to have gone out alone, the better.
Australia’s cable channel Foxtel do show some Motortrend shows, but it’s 10 year old content:(
@@vintagetintrader1062 look into finnegand garage too some really cool content over there thats not just cars
I think Fred said something about there being some legal stipulations surrounding doing the same offroad content that’s why everything is build content??
Is this correct
@@beznerindustries3057 yes I do watch his UA-cam but a lot of his stuff is high end, high dollar, and high specialised knowledge required. Im not going to be building a 50k Hemi engine for a jet boat anytime soon.
Finding a Barra 6 at my local wreckers and seeing if a T5 from a XF Falcon will survive behind it is more my thing.
Bargain basemen performance is my thing, something is Australians are born with, making the most with what you got, We are the worlds best turd polishers,,,, no that’s not the right metaphor,,,
Digging the new channel intro. Amazed at how polished you’re getting with every video. Keep up the great work and get Fred to visit.
I'm sure they will eventually but Fred has vaguely suggested that they have to wait until their MT contracts expire to start working together again. Or something like that.
Correct
Thank you. I’m looking forward to getting this channel to support itself so I can hopefully get back to cool trips
"You won't have an oil leak for 15 to 20 miles... cuz it's a jeep". Truer words have never been spoken. These videos are awesome Dave. Thoroughly enjoyable to watch and super informative. Thank you for all your hard work.
Thank you!! I was having a real hard time posting it. I thought it would be too boring
@@thedirtheadshed nothing off road can be boring to me. I was actually looking for more detailed information.
Love seeing YJ builds. I've got a '92. I'm looking forward to Midnight Metalworks's 4-speed box they're working on.
they are good little jeeps. And kinda classic at this point
Let's be honest here. On average 4.0Ls just sound like crap. Awesome build though 👍
You’re not wrong. But I’d like it to be less garbage
Very cool YJ build, love your style Dave! Can't wait to build a UA rig one day! 🤘🇨🇦
Thank you
I know it is lots of work to film yourself while creating great content but you pull it off and it looks almost effortless. Yeah, your noise levels are sometimes off and you might drop the camera once in a while, but it is very entertaining.
I think your attitude, charisma ,and knowledge all come together for something special.
I appreciate that. It’s getting more natural
So bummed DED is has been canceled finally paid amazon to catch up on episodes ... I dont understand how you only got 45k subs love the channel ive learned so much wish I was as good as a fabricator as you ... Your driving me to keep building my xj to next level
Hopefully the subs grow. UA-cam is a strange place to figure out
I loved the comment “it won’t leak oil for another 15-20miles” spoken like a true backyard mechanic working on a jeep
It did exactly what I expected
Am I mistaken or does the service manual call for rtv at the edges of the lower part of the rear main?
My 94 4.0 is noisy also. Been that way for a while. Runs fine
Same
I love this channel because I love the content, and Dave legitimately is the man.
I hate this channel entirely due to jealousy:
1. Everything is so clean, living in the north east my vehicles look like these "junk" ones for all of 6 months before they start rusting.
2. I just swapped a TH350 in my junk car on gravel and stone last night... my lift jealousy is at an all time high.
I did all this in a driveway for a long time. Took a lot of sacrifices to be able to build a proper shop
It's crazy you ended up with this jeep, It used to sit a block away from my house and drove past it everyday for years
I bought it from that guy’s nephew. He passed away not too long ago
Engine noise kinda sounds like the infamous "lifter knock". Heck, what do I know? I don't do automotive work anymore. 10 yrs. of it was plenty.
I think it’s piston slap. I’ll drive it till something breaks
LuK clutch. Pronounced Luke is a Geman company. They have a plant in Wooster OH. Depending on the age of that clutch it could have been made there or in their plant in Mexico.
I always called them Luke, someone recently corrected me and pronounced it Luck. I’ll stick to my original way
Loving the channel! Gotta get my daily dose of dirt. Doctor's orders..
I'll get to the dirt! Got to get these projects done first though.
Great video Dave. Eastern Washington looks like a beautiful place, I'd like to visit. I've only been to the western part
It is really nice. All the way over to the Dakotaa
Dave, I hear you correcting from truck to Jeep often. Do some people have an issue with you calling your little truck a truck?
Just call it a truck, I mean it ain't a car and it ain't a motorbike, it's a truck!
Yeah. I just have to be careful. Lots of people like to correct you on here
This Jeep build sent me down a rabbit hole since it first showed up on DED. I sold my JK that I had since new and went on a quest for a decent YJ to build, and I ended up with a killer buggy instead. 😂
It looks rad
Thank you for turning the headlights off when you pulled into the garage!
That was very cash money of you 😊
Looking cool is the most important step
What up danger man Dave, just found your video, been watching ded for a while looking forward to seeing more videos
Tell your friends! Let’s grow this thing
Love all the content. As a suggestion, have you looked into a BT mic for filming? One would let you move around and easily maintain a more constant audio level.
Working on it
Dave, love the vids but please get a wireless mic, your very quite when away the camera. Doesnt help im hard of hearing.
Waiting on first check and I’ll buy some equipment
I can't wait to see how the rear main seal works for you . I have only slowed my leak briefly after many attempts. Hope to see you at EJS 2023 .
it failed already. I have a factory one on order.
15-20 miles huh?
Hey Dave, what made you go with the Midnight Metalworks D300 over an Atlas? I have been debating between the two. Would love to hear your thoughts on why one over the other. Thanks.
Atlas was a year out and Midnight metalworks reached out to see if I’d be interested in trying something new
That old chain was rough! New chain and sprocket set looks like a nice upgrade. The old one looked like a motorcycle chain, but the new one looks like multiple plates per linkage. Nice
Yeah. 240 k on the motor and it was due for some love
I'm surprised you didn't take Mom's spaghetti or maz grande.
I wanted to take a jeep. Both of those rigs have gone before
Thanks for sharing. I have a wrangler YJ myself. Only mine is the 4 cylinder and 5 speed. Really enjoy watching your videos 👍👍
thanks for watching. keep enjoying that jeep.
Nice! Love the work, videos looking good keep it up man
Thank you.
It looked like the block was wet further up by the valve cover running down 🤔
It’s all junk. Don’t look too close
Won't have a leak for 15-25 miles 😂 a true connoisseur
true
I’m honestly digging the yt channel a lot more then ded we see alot more of what you take pride in
I appreciate that. A Lot got cut on ded
Definitely the best opening music of any of the youtube car guy channels.
Thank you.
How does a jeep know how to speak British? Because seems like they both know how to drip oil from brand new
For real.
Production is better! Beefy YJ is cool. Thanks for sharing. Love Dirt
Thanks for watching. I promise it’ll get better
Will you do some videos on the merc behind the jeep also? I saw your other small vids on it awhile ago.
Yeah. I will
Jeep 4.0 lifter noise. Normal, just send it 😁.
Done
Love watching you and Fred with your new endeavors on the You Tubes, thank you. Keep it up Dave, I appreciate it.
Thanks, it seems like a good outlet
What are your thoughts on "lunch box" lockers? Thanks
I like them for the most part. I’ve had good luck with Powertrax lock-rite and Spartan
Just adding a comment because I know it helps!
I appreciate it
Every 4L I’ve had has sounded terrible. But they all ran great
Same same
Love the video so I subscribed gave you a thumbs up can't wait to see the next one good job
Thanks! I appreciate it
What editing software do you use. I'm struggling with retaining the 4k footage I upload. UA-cam compresses everything.
I just use iMovie. And I don’t film in 4k
I built a 4.6 stroker with ic944 pistons new everything and a high volume oil pump…..still makes noise at idle…4.0s just run.. not the smoothest or the most quite engine but if it is going to eat itself….you’ll know it…
Mine broke a piston skirt but had a knock and cold start for 35,000 miles before it broke…worn pistons or egg shape cylinders you would have blow by…sounds like valve terrain to me….probably would never be an issue 4.0s are cheap and abundant.. beat it like a red headed step child….then when it gives up the ghost swap it before the wife finds out….
Don’t waste money on a building a stroker they don’t like to rev like the stock 4.0….I wish I’d just save my money to put towards other things…and if I where to do it over id keep the stock crank run the ic944s for the lower compression and build a turbo engine that could run on 87 octane assuming the compression ratio wouldn’t be to low..decking the block could compensate for some though..
all good advise. I dont know anyone who has been super stoked on the 4.6L stroker.
Dave, what's with Clifford's dog bone in the background? 15:41 😂
That a “The Bone” creeper. They look weird, but work amazing. No more getting stuck on a zip tie
@@thedirtheadshed Ha, learned more than I expected! 👍
Thats a very cool YJ!! I love seeing people build cool YJ's ( doesnt happen very often ). people are always hating on my YJ, but i love it anyway lol. KUTGV!!! BTW my 4.0 sounds like a diesel lol
Thanks. I dig em. This is my third one.
I remember replacing the rear main seal in my Late Dads 1969 Jeep CJ-5. We had to lay on the driveway to do it. The new seal came with a wire that had a gripper thing on one end that the "instructions" said just clamp the gripper to the seal and it will just slide out. Yeah right it took us two nights after supper to finally get the seal out and the new one in. I lost my Dad on Feb.15, 2019. Dad was not what you call a car guy but he was always all in on what ever I dragged home.
Sounds like a good guy. Embrace the memories
@@thedirtheadshed I do.
Seeing a video of you and Nate from Dirt Lifestyle would be a fun video someday!
We’re working on it
Put back in garage, buy some hiking boots and hike.
That’s on my radar too.
This such perfect timing... Just finished rebuilding my 1992 4.0, had the tranny and T-case rebuilt, and I have a great how to video... This is my first Jeep project, so THANKS!!!
Right on. Have fun with it
Unfortunately the 4.0L tends to suffer from piston slap due to short piston skirts. My 94 ZJ is noisy AF, but has great oil pressure and seems to run just fine at 204K miles. I've listened with a stethoscope to determine if a timing chain would help, and the front of the engine really seems quiet. I just put a Luk clutch set in earlier this year with a rear main seal and oil pan gasket. Been really happy with the Luk setup, so far. I'm far from properly geared (3.73 w/32" tires), but have managed to chirp 2nd with it. Hopefully the Centerforce treats you well!
So rad it’s great
Hope the channel allows you to be your own boss. Don’t sign sh*t
Yep. This is all me
These videos just keep getting better and better. Keep it up, Dave! Oh, and greetings from Lithuania by the way.
Cheers! Thanks for the support
Ua isn't cool with the same clowns each and every year.
those are my friends! But I agree. It would be rad if we could get like 20 new readers on the trip every year.
Can I go ? 😆
Give me gas $ I'll drive your support trailer ! seriously.
No trailers on the trip!
@@thedirtheadshed 😔
I like all the build tech. And you explain what it is,I hate seeing a vehicle and wonder what it has in it,or under it. thanks
Thanks! I was worried it was gonna be terribly boring
What do you keep in all those file cabinets?
I’ll do a file cabinet overview
Great video, need to adjust the volume in a few spots, it was hard to hear. Transfer case looks awesome, can't wait to see how this YJ does on UA this year.
I ran through and tried to even out the audio on all the clips. Now that the channel is making a few bucks i will purchase some proper equipment.
Great video Dave!!! I’m in the process of building my commando half cab, hopefully It’ll make the cut for ultimate adventure 2035 😂. Nice hood too (I work for chris)
sweet! We need to get Chris to make a Commando conversion hood.
@@thedirtheadshed that’s what I said 2 years ago when he did the MB conversion!!
This is what we wanted in a show all along!!!
Thanks! I appreciate the input
If you don't like using rtv, gasgacinch works wonders to seal up and secure the gasket without the mess
Good advice
@@thedirtheadshed my dad taught my about it and swears by it. I've been using it for about 20yrs myself
Your gonna keep doing this, you need better sound, couldn't hear you talking about the tire you took off
Got to get a check in the bank so I can buy some equipment. Getting close
@@thedirtheadshed Great news!
10:21 Who makes that Beeffy Timing set?
It was cloyes or mellings. I forget
I was interested in where the butter jeep came from so I’m digging into the history! I’m learning a bit about the 4.0 here and the LS swap in the recent videos. Lots of really cool stuff going on
I'm a CJ 7 guy, but really like your new set up, and the way you go about sharing your years of knowledge. Thanks and subbed.
I appreciate it. Thanks
Check the distributor for noise.
i didnt check it. If thats the problem Ill kick myself.
Excellent content as usual. I saw your filing cabinets in the background, I just got a few for free. Is there anything you do with them to make them better for storage and what kind of stuff do you use them for? I’m not good at being organized, You look like you have that under control, and I want to try.
I have little plastic trays in them that help organize the small stiff
Ditch that Jeep and take the backyard Bronco!!
I sold the bronco.. Never really was that in to it.
Iron pig???
@@HoundofWar You're killin me.... I sold that too. Needed cash to help finish building the shop.
Good thing I didn’t find your shop in SD…. You would’ve sold my rig!!
Oh wow, the chains were so different.
Chains? I need to go back and watch
Finally! someone on youtube does the gasket sealant on paper gaskets correctly. I always see people putting a bead on the flange and then putting the paper gasket on and calling it good. a thin film on the paper applied with your fingers works a treat and keeps the paper from failing. TY Dave!
its the little things. That's also a pet peeve of mine.
Cool video as always! Learned something new as usual and now I'm looking for a weighted flywheel for my dads 22RE to help keep the RPMS up when he shifts. The Centerforce and LC engineering kits look pretty sweet.
P.S. do you have that Range Rover from Dirt everyday? I've got a spare land rover 5 speed R380 and gear driven LT230 transfer case in my side yard... Once you drive a 5 speed land rover/range rover you might kick the jeeps/Toyotas to the curb ;)
The rover stayed at our friends shop in Denver. Think it got parted
Emilio Estevez working on his YJ 🤣
I used to get that a lot. It’s been a while
@@thedirtheadshed Keep it up man, awesome content.
Love it brother. Keep it comin!
Keepin
When you coming out with merch?
Soon, working with some artists now
Love, love the content!!!! Especially like the rear main and your comment, you won’t have an oil leak for 15 to 20…. MILES! No kidding, my daughter and I built her a TJ and put new rear main in… I got no leaks for about a month and now have a drop every now and then…. SHOULD I BE CONCERNED DAVE? Tell me what is next? Or do I just leave it…
Leave it for now.. but replace with a factory one if you’re up for it
Dream Jeep is an MJ and I know you've talked about your first one. What would you do if you had another one to start with? Considering a lack of major fab skills.
I think I’d keep it on 32’s and like a 3” lift. Keep it simple for a couple years
Dont get a jeep....they are junk
I’m laid up waiting for back surgery so I just rewatched all the episodes of UA on motortrend..I can’t wait for the new episodes!
The official videos should roll out late November
That's just the lifters letting you know it's still running! :D
Yep. They like to speak up
I hate to be that guy… but what wheels are those?
They are Method trail series
You and Fred are both like that
thanks.
Never had a quiet 4.0. They get softer with a good 15-40 that's got all the zincs and dinosaurs, but they all talk back it seems.
This one may be due for a real rebuild
interested as to why you would not swap an auto into it...wouldnt that be better for offroad?
I prefer a manual transmission. It is more work off road, but i still like knowing its in the gear I chose. And I really enjoy three footing it, slipping the clutch, and rolling into the throttle.
Where the grease zerts for the joints? I see the threaded holes
I put them in . Probably off camera
@@thedirtheadshedwhat grease u like to run? I run the green waterproof schaiffers in everything I own from heavy equipment to my trailer hub bearings.
Discovery should do a show with you and Fred, doing what you do best.......have fun
That would be cool
When ya gonna get back on the Merc?
Probably December. Got to work on the Nissan first
Nice to hear the JBFab name...they provided me with a universal twin-stick set up for my 231/231 doubler in an XJ. Gonna have to save my pennies for Midnight's case & doubler, although I'd sure consider the promised 4 speed box they've got comin'.
Pretty cool you did the doubler. I’d like to build one some day
Is that a welding bottle cap modified for your lift point? I lift my linked YJ from the body mounts as well.
Yes it is. Originally made it to lift the Mom’s spaghetti truck. Then squished it a little to make it fit in the jeep body mount
Was there an old timing guide? I wonder if they kept the original and the chain stretched prematurly.
Not that I'm perfect mechanic though, I just drilled and tapped the rear main seal bolts on my 2007 yukon 5.3 due to stripping after discovery I didn't tourque the oil pump bolts and thought the o ring was installed wrong. 🤷♂️
its just and old junky engine. Ill keep running it as long as it lets me
Square headlight gang
Yep. Seems like all of my rigs right now
@The Dirthead Shed Dave the channel is awesome. Love the tech as well as the flare you put on a rig doing it your way.
Did you ever further diagnose the tick / rattle on the Jeep? Possibly lifters or piston sleeve issue like the newer 4.0s have?
Keep it up man!!!!
I’ve narrowed it down to piston slap I think. Just gonna run it
Been following you and Fred for quite some time, keep at it! What do you think the best way to get into a used Jeep is these days? XJ, YJ, CJ, TJ? Starting with some basic wheeling and growing from there.
I think I'd go for a YJ. I picked this one up for $3500. Needed work, but it was a great start.
@@thedirtheadshed Thanks Dave.
That a waggy axle or jk?
78 f250 with 5 lug outers

I dont mind the work. But making a video about it was torture.
great episode curious how the new clutch worked on the trails.
It’s amazing. Way better than I expected
You and Fred have to get another show going! I enjoy watching both your channels, but I can tell you guys have a blast working together!
Yeah it’s always better with buddies
Some of those 4.0L motors have issues with loose rocker arms, it could be the miss you are hearing and the source of the noise. Loosening all the main caps and letting the crank drop a bit can help to remove the rear main seal. It appeared that the one you removed was in backwards.
I checked torque on the arms.
Adjust the valves
with what? they are not adjustable.
Can we get details on the lift pad adapters??? Looks like a welding cylinder cap? Thanks and keep up the great videos!
It sure is
Can’t wait to see the adventure. This is a good start to it ✌🏽😎
Thanks. I’ve got a few videos to post
Love the YJ, great to see them on here. I've got a 87' with the 4.2L put a Holley Sniper kit in it and I've got to take it apart and send it back in for warranty work they couldn't figure out what was wrong over the phone. Mine isn't built up like your's is but maybe one day.
Hope that sniper works out. When the are good the are GOOD
Can't wait to see this year's adventure .I remember the first time seeing ultimate adventure. I think it was 14 0r 15 starting out at powerline Park , which is about a hour from my house in wv .hopefully one year I'll get my wj built enough to get chosen as a readers ride.
