- Everyone has a different idea of what tools they need in their 4x4. On this episode I’ll be packing for the trail and show you what I have in my tool kit.

Dirt Daily episodes really show me how chaotic Fred's mind must be at times. I love it, this was also a great video showcasing what is and is not needed on a trip, especially one like UA.
Tool talk with Fred is always the best👍🏻👍🏻
the childlike wonderment of 'oh yeah these can lash together!!!!'
You spent all that time wrapping your self-fusing Rescue Tape back up, but didn't talk about it! That stuff is amazing! Hell, I've repaired a PS hose with it and it held so long as you didn't hit the stops with it.
Also: I always try to perform routine trail fix type things (swapping an axle shaft, accessory belt, etc) with the tools in the Jeep to find out what I'm missing. My 1/2" impact (Makita eyesore teal for me) always has my front axle shaft socket on it. Easy storage that way.
Great idea to use the packed tools.
Nice, that’s a great pack of tools you got there Fred 👍🏼
Great content as always!
Other honorable mentions:
Duct tape
Baling wire
Zip ties
Self adhering hose tape
Hose clamps
Cotter pins
JB kwik
RTV
Jumper cables and a few 7018 sticks
Ratchet straps
Fluids
Packet of wheel bearing grease
This is exactly how I started a business called, JeepSkool.
All us old timers dumped our tool bags out on the table and explained why we carry what we carry whilst off-roading. Got us on the '09 UA tour!
Thanks for all you do, Mr Fred. Much appreciated!
🤟😎🤘
I always enjoy your videos. My Great Nephew is getting into " Overlanding " so I will have him watch your channel. Thank you for sharing your adventures & wisdom with us.
That Titan tool bag is inspiring ... different colour for different stuff ..
You have TrailRecon on one end and Fred on the other. I’m in the middle…..Thanks for making me feel good about my half mess!
I'm with you on Tub o' Towels. Awesome product.
That Noco Boost Pro is what the AAA guys use, it is awesome! holds a charge for a long time, lots of cranking amps and super durable.
Fred you have totally sold me on Tub o' Towels!!
I agree carrying double sets of wrenches and I carry standard and metric sockets and extensions.
What a great video for someone who may not know what to bring for their first trail trip. I keep all of this kit in my everyday POS. Cant break down on my daily 200 mile round trip
I use to be an over packer. Now its the exact opposite. I do have my electrical kit, much like Freds'. And that can go into any vehicle I'm driving. My tool kits will vary for each vehicle. Gone are the days of taking half my toolbox. For my Suzuki, you can pretty much build the entire truck with 4 different wrenches/ sockets. I will sit down with each truck I buy or build and make a tool kit for it. Ive been a professional mechanic for more than 30 years. Its not too difficult to figure out what is a necessity and what isn't. And you are never alone on the trails anyway. And if you do need that one thing you forgot to pack, there is a very good chance someone has what you need.
i don't carry all the sizes of combination wrenches in twos. many of the metrics cross over as you all know. good weight savings cause it all adds up. 5/16 = 8mm, 1/2=13mm, 9/16=14mm, 3/4=19mm. our core group splits the burden of weigh too, we don't need five hi-lifts, hahaha! or five complete socket sets.i carry minimal tools but have the premier power welder and york air. we worked a system out years ago so we don't load up on redundancy between us. we all have extra 10mm stashed here and there :) thank you for all the great videos over the years!!!
I'm in the process of building my first full size wheeling rig. I found an old military footlocker and filled it with everything you might need from sockets to wrenches, screwdrivers to anything electrical to pry bars and a small propane torch, all bought from Harbour freight for about 1000 dollars only downside is its all there in 1 box and it weighs a ton
Not for wheeling, but I bring a lot of this for traveling with camper. I use a storage container designed for wrapping paper for a toolbox. It fits under rear seat of truck.
I find these video so helpful and calm inducing. I am a bit of an overpacker/overanalyzer but also a bit disorganized. Its in my blood from what I do. I love seeing people who pack like I do.
you should add the weight of your gear. I'd love to compare.
@MrJoshItIs That is one thing that made me rethink my tool kit. Weight. It wasn't a real concern when I was driving full size trucks with V8s. Lots of power, lots of space. Then I got into Suzuki years back. Everything is a minimum, except for the fun. Get rid of all the unnecessary stuff. Save the weight and the space.
@@-Mike-69save weight, space, and fuel!
Fred I would love to see you join Fryberger and Dulch on an overlanding adventure. Just to show off all your tool bags.
Thank you for being a normal person! 😅 I love that you pack your stuff the same way I do. I've got electrical bags that are very similar to yours. like you I have multiple bags of tools and could probably rebuild the vehicle with what I bring. 😅😂
I would say an old school hand pump would be nice to carry, it may take some time but you could still get air in a tire.
Never thought about TUB OF TOWELS!!!
Bring back Dirt Everyday!!!
Another great video
Don't forget the ready welder. That has saved our butt and others we have come across on the trail.
I have a small mechanics tool set in my truck. I think its like 200 piece kit, that covers all the basics. Then I have a bag of truck specific tools (torx bits, specialty tools, etc) then I have a small bag of spares of things that I know have broken from previous trail runs.
I was in that official gluetread youtube video on the rubicon. I had the black gladdy on tons. I was amazed at how well those glue treads worked.
You should also have recovery gear, shackles, tree saver, snatch blocks,etc....
I drive a roadtrain here in Australia. My toolbox is massive. & bloody heavy! I wish I could get a tool set made up of hard plastic cases just like the one for your impact sockets. One for screw drivers, one for ring spanners, one forsockets, etc etc. I dont like rummaging around in bags to find that one tool
Milwaukee packout might work for you. And they interlock 👍
Cheers@@SergioHernandez-qm4ie but not exactly what I'm looking for
Great video man !!
That’s more tools than I have in my shop 😂
One thing more. Hacksaw. Good show.
Fred, always a great episode, and excellent content. You always are entertaining, informative, and super down to earth. Thanks for being you. Also I wush Motor trend would get rid of some of the dumb ass shows they are showing and bring back Dirt Everyday. Just saying. I think all of us should sebd MT a message and request Dirt Everyday be brought back. So just tell us where to send and to who. Keep the muddy side up and the rubber side down.
Practical affordable & smart💪😎👍
Crescent wrench and Vice grips are absolute staples in my to go bag.
Thanks for the refresher
Bolts: I refresh my critical hardware every couple of years. Old hardware goes in the spares kit. :)
You might pack more tools and supplies than I have on hand in my shop! 😂
Great Video!
Another good one 👍👍
That reminds me I need to get my tool roll set up..
Bring adapters to go from an to rubber tubing. Much easier than trying to remake an lines in the field
Great video glad you shared 🎉
Awesome video!
What about an old fashioned 4-way lug wrench that fits the lugs on your rig?
I've managed to fit everything into a couple of Klein backpacks, including a drill, angle and die grinders, and an impact.
Great video! I was very curious if my tool bags matched up to a seasoned offroader. Everything except for the nightmare wiring bag I've cobbled together a similar set of tools.
Always good to have the right tool.
Reminds me of my S10 Blazer 4x4 2 door, it has tools piled in there, nuts and bolts a metal coffee can with old bolts, nuts, washers... I have 3 different jacks, all kinds of stuff. Yeah, all kinds of stuff and I don't even off road these days. But I live in Wyoming so off road is relative, plus close by. I have a couple of sets of plug kits. I also have a logging chain, it will break your vehicle, but I have owned it for decades...
Zipties !
Awesome! Don’t forget a CPS for you 4.0 guys out there. If you know you know….
Thanks Fred
Great content Fred. Seems like a small hitch-mounted vise may be useful for someone in the group to carry.
It really feels like a Fred and Dave adventure video is way past due.......😁
I agree it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
love the channel, but my OCD is kicking in just watching that yellow electrical bag packing. lol
I need to add files and some sort of hacksaw to my tool bag. I have had to cut bolts off before and it is a pain if you don’t have a decent saw.
👍👍
Chaos
👍👍😎
Great video!!! Do you take any fluids?
Or an air compressor, what type of jack???
God I miss Dirt Every Day
13/17ths wrench lol
Various sized Zip ties and bottle jacks....
Fred i'm sure everyone on the trail are friends , what about engraving your name on your tools
Thanks for the mention!
Just ordered up some bags.
Welding rods?
You are carrying two types of wrench sets. Do Jeeps still use fractional bolts? I’m a Toyota guy so I honestly don’t know.
Camping gear??
2nd like.
that wire bag gives me anxiety.
zip ties
tie straps, zip ties and duct tape????
Just a pocket knife = faith in God
What? No zip ties?
Bag of zip ties.
Mine usually just has warm beer
