    CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - Today we’re going on a Gullah Geechee and Soul Food tour in Charleston, South Carolina. I’ll be trying some of the classic dishes like Turkey wings, red rice, crab and rice, and not missing out on the mountain of garlic butter crabs!
    Bertha's Kitchen (goo.gl/maps/T8wwFps9wdtCXo5W6)
    This was one of the restaurants I was most looking forward to trying when I was in Charleston - so try their traditional Soul food and Gullah food. They’ve even won a James Beard award! Their red rice, fried catfish, and especially their giant turkey wing was the highlight. Excellent food, highly recommended when you’re in Charleston.
    Hannibal's Kitchen (goo.gl/maps/WbwRxT1CvovrtaSX9)
    Next we headed to Hannibal's Kitchen, again a restaurant that legendary for their Gullah food in Charleston. They have all sorts of southern specialties here including crab rice and lima beans with pig tails.
    Ravenel Fresh Seafood (goo.gl/maps/xBvyKxvtCsuuNN196)
    Big thank you to Chef BJ Dennis ( / chefbjdennis ) for this recommendation. Ravenel Fresh Seafood serves local South Carolina seafood, prepared Gullah style. You can’t go wrong with the red rice and fried fish, but people most come here for the mountain of crabs with thick garlic butter sauce all over it.

    As a person who lives and was raised here in Charleston South Carolina, I can tell you I never thought I would see the day he would be here. As a restaurant, owner and operator, I salute you mark for visiting the birthplace of Soulfood in the south of America. I know most of your subscribers are here for the food, but people really need to take a moment and realize those areas where you visited and stayed are focal points in American history. I’m part of the Gullah Geechee culture and those recipes are sacred man. Thank you so much for coming to my hometown to give exposure to not just the best soul food in America but places that have been nearly unchanged for hundreds of years.

    Wow, this food tour focusing on Gullah Geechee and soul food sounds absolutely amazing! The Gullah Geechee people have done a remarkable job preserving their West African culture, especially along the coast of the Carolinas. From their traditions to music and heritage, they have also managed to preserve their unique and delicious cuisine.
    I can already imagine the mouthwatering home-cooked food you'll be enjoying on this tour. From okra and stews to fried chicken and pigtail, every dish promises to be a delightful treat for the taste buds. And let's not forget about the rice and garlic crabs, which are sure to add even more flavor to the experience.
    I'm thrilled that you'll be sharing your food adventure through this video. It's a fantastic opportunity for us to vicariously enjoy all the delicious dishes and get a glimpse into the rich culinary traditions of the Gullah Geechee people. Bon appétit!

    • @kendramiddletonwilliams
      @kendramiddletonwilliams 11 місяців тому +4

      @@rubysangel5180 if I'm making one recommendation - it's Charleston - and visiting the islands off of Charleston and south. You must try the local soul food and seafoods, and specialty things like "she-crab soup." Do yourself a favor and drive, from Charleston to Savannah. Places like Seabrook, John's island, Kiawah, Folly, Edisto, and all the way down to Tybee Island in Georgia. It's 3-4 hours of slow driving, and you can almost pick any place to eat and you will be happy.
      I recommend driving along this route because it's so incredibly gorgeous and there's nowhere else on earth like it. You can take 2-3 days to make this drive, see the sights, and eat and you'll be so glad you did.

    • @maxionparker9878
      @maxionparker9878 11 місяців тому +13

      @@jarodlee442 true, but the Country was initially built using SC rice. It was used as currency. The slave market was in favor of rice and was one of the initialized crops. It has heirloom rices from Africa that can't be duplicated by texture, flavor and uniqueness anywhere. The secret??? Low Country rice were grown in brackish waters right of the coast making them preseasoned with sea salt. Arkansas can't and will never replicate that.

      @@Samantha.86 yeah because the foodways come from SC. @@beats4life971 No she was right. The Caribbean came first. We had the slave trade first. The Europeans landed in the Carib in 1492 and landed in the US in the 1600's or so.

    Oh wow! Featuring my wonderful Geechee Hometown Charleston SC. Thank you Mark for letting your audience know of the great down home soul food (so good that my mouth is watering too). Be sure to stop by Gille's James Island. Absolutely delicious seafood - Tell them MonaLisa & Patty sent you! lol!. People make sure to come visit Charleston for the rich historical American History as well. And don't forget to visit the International African American Museum Downtown Charleston. I was there a few weeks ago for our Family Reunion and a few of my cousins from Ohio, my sister and I went. We all were fantastic from all of the artifacts, pictures, videos, and amazing information. We spent 2-3 hours there! A Must SEE and DO!
