PETCHABURI, THAILAND (เพชรบุรี) - To continue with 5 of Thailand’s Hidden Dishes, we’re driving to Petchaburi (เพชรบุรี), located in Central Thailand to harvest, cook, and eat a rare Thai dish; Toddy Palm Fruit Curry (แกงหัวโหนด).
Part 3) THAILAND’S HIDDEN DISHES, with Tourism Authority of Thailand - This is Part 2 of this 5 Part video series, where I’m traveling around Thailand to eat 5 hidden dishes!
Khanom Jeen Tod Man (ร้านขนมจีนทอดมันเจ้เกียง) - maps.app.goo.gl/3F1Cju9usfMQX... - When we arrived to Petchaburi, we first stopped to eat a quick breakfast of rice noodle topped with freshly fried fish cakes - some of the best I’ve had - all hand made with curry paste and holy basil leaves.
Ban Rai Krang (ชุมชนบ้านไร่กร่าง) - maps.app.goo.gl/exJmgx6XcQr7B... - At this community in Petchaburi we met up with our host Pu Yai Prasong (ผู้ใหญ่ประสงค์). This region is known throughout Thailand for their toddy palm production which they mainly harvest the sap and reduce it down to palm sugar. But they also eat a cutty made from the tops of the young husks, and that’s the dish we’re trying. They first harvested the toddy palm fruits. Then sliced off the tops, pounded a beautiful curry paste and added fish and grilled pork to the recipe. They also added plenty of fingerroot and coconut milk to thicken it. It was delicious! Toddy Palm Fruit Curry (แกงหัวโหนด)
Khanom Tan Mae Ying (ขนมตาลแม่หญิง) - maps.app.goo.gl/PJeVZqPcAb1BC... - Additionally, one of my favorite Thai desserts is made from the husk of the toddy palm fruit, and so we were able to see the entire cooking process of this traditional Thai cake. Toddy Palm Cake (Khanom Tan ขนมตาล).
Si Sawat Restaurant (ร้านอาหารศรีสวัสดิ์) - maps.app.goo.gl/zXwpGFW1nE9Ck... - Lastly, couldn’t miss a Thai food meal of local Petchaburi food. And it was a perfect way to wrap up this incredible day of Thai food.

You're not just an ambassador for the amazing Thai food culture but an ambassador to the whole world and all the wonderful cultures you have brought to light just by simply sharing your food adventures. Thank you, Mark. Mahalo 🤙🏽
Yes ❤
Those fried curry fish balls look amazing!
You look more amazing ❤ Queen 👑
Yes , they sure do.
Hey Mark mate I literally just released a video making and eating the Khanom Tan in rural Thailand then I see you uploaded this the day before!
Very special stuff ain't it! 🇹🇭
We use the entire palm tree in Myanmar and make products very similar to Thailand. We baked the palm tree roots, make alcohol and sweet juice out of it and eat flesh and even use the leaves and stems to build houses. I hope more people will come to Myanmar and embrace our beautiful culture, but making a curry is so unique. I have never thought about it. Thanks Mark for showing the world what an authentic thai cusine is.
I am from Bangladesh. Was watching this video with my mom and she said the recipe for the Palm cake made in the video is almost exactly the same as we do. We just don't add coconut milk, instead we just add little coconut pieces in the cakes.
She got very happy seeing this video.. in fact, my father just had someone made these cakes for him because he likes them so much.
Thailand has great food culture ❤❤
The first restaurant has been my family’s go to restaurant for years whenever we go to Petchburi!! Their sauce isn’t too sweet at all and really elevates the dish. And I need to visit that last restaurant!! Thank you for your recommendation Mark!
From all Mark' food explorations, my favorite always his journey on Thailand. I learned much about Thai food and culture!
Love how communities make use of their local resources and make delicious unique food, wonderful food traditions. And the mini dessert cakes are airy without any leavening, incredible.
Yes, I love seeing the different cultural foods
I remember when I was young. People in rural area always said that they didn't need to go to the market at all. Vegetables were everywhere around the house and rice fields. Palm fruit was one of them. I had seen them went in their garden for the herbs including lemon grass and add vegetables that they collected around the house in the area. Everything was freshly made for their family every meals. They mainly ate fish which they could find in rice field or stream around their house. They always said:" there is water, there is fish.".
Violet Ying Salary is a good good for the most part and the only thing
Totally agree.

Great work, Mark
I come from Northeastern part of India, and we happen to have a few common names for some things. We call oil _ naman. The Thais call it too. Now you said namthan for palm sugar and in the same manner we call jaggery_ namthin. (Namthan-namthin)

Great video! ❤❤
me and my husband are planning to move to a different country and I would really like to move to thailand, the food is great and it's absolutely stunning over there the only thing that worries me a bit is the language it sounds difficult to learn
This is a stunning region of Thailand, the scenery, the amazing food, the incredible ingredients...Mark really showcases this all really well..
@@ojosazules8828 it is, the only thing missing are some beaches. The mountains are very beautiful but I need the ocean. I also think the people are very kind in Thailand I haven't experienced it for myself but from what I've seen it does seems to be like that
The language is definitely difficult to learn especially if you're a native English speaker, but don't be put off by that. In many parts of Thailand, especially in cities, a lot a people speak English and if you actively try to learn Thai you will start picking up the basics very quickly.
@@Junbav I already moved to a different country 15 years ago and I know once you are living in a place learning the language comes natural in due time, but I only moved from Belgium to Germany and both languages are very similar in many ways. The most difficult part at least I think is not being able to read because that usually helps a lot with knowing how to pronounce certain words. And ofcourse english is a language spoken in many parts of the world, so we'll be able to come by for sure. For me it's either Thailand or south America like Panama or somewhere around that region and altho I know learning spanish or portugese would be a lot easier for me I would still prefer Thailand, just have to convince the husband 😆
Hi I’m Thai. As many people known, the official Thai language is widely spoken throughout Thailand. Many Thais are able to speak and understand English though more so in Bangkok and the major tourist areas in upcountry. Learning Thai is somehow not that much hard I think :)
Thailand's climate and low cost of living thus making it an incredibly popular destination to start a new life, especially for retirees. Accommodation is definitely affordable!
Also, Thailand is surely a safe place to live for families as well as single adults. The country is not on the high alert list for terrorism and other forms of crime but it is rated as the least dangerous country in Southeast Asia.
Another awesome food adventure, the absolute legend of Food Travel vloggers. Cheers Mark for the inspiration to create Drew's Travels, documenting life in the lesser explored areas of the Philippines.

I know you probably can't read all comments but I started watching you about 4 or 5 years ago and I enjoyed it so much that I branched out and I watched competitive eating now I'm best friends with Scott each and Johansen and a lot of other people Randy santel and his wife almost Katina and a lot of other people you've opened my mind to a lot of different cuisines that I can't get too because I don't have the money to travel and I absolutely do love you and I want to let you know thank you for opening my mind to these things and then I'll always be a subscriber. And I want to let you know I'm a little weird and corkie and I do comment throughout the video I don't just leave one, I'll leave up to 10 as I watch the video because I actually watch the whole video. I'm sure other people can join me and saying thank you for sharing your life your wife your son with us and letting us go with you on your day today activities it's amazing and we love you for it

😮ohh..wow Mark....this is my 1st time.....watching such a unique dish....the palm fruit that turns into a great gravy / curry.....i've never seen this type of delicious food in malaysia😅..maybe, i can try cooking it....and watching this video..reminds me of the young mangosteen curry that you had before......that fermented shrimp paste with chillies is like "sambal belacan" in Malaysia.....great job mark

12:34 I love this fruit in desserts. Who knew you can make it into a curry, incredible resourcefulness. 👍🏻👍🏻👏👏
Interesting. In Indonesia we do make curry out of toddy palm shoots as well, but I don’t think it’s common to use the fruit that way as we usually use them for desserts.
Wow amazing
Thank you my friend Mark for sharing the new video. The delights of Thai food beyond BKK truly are a wonder to the palate. I am a fan of that culture and its rich gastronomy, both street and formal for its abundant versatility. 👍
