  • Forging a Messer Knife form a semi truck leaf spring.
A messer (German for "knife") is a single-edged sword with a knife-like hilt construction. While the various names are often used synonymously, messers are divided into two types:
Lange Messer ("long knifes") are one-handed swords used by Bourgeoisie (middle-class civilians) for personal self-defence.
They were about a meter long and may have evolved from the Bauernwehr ("peasant's sidearm"). They are also known as Großes Messer (Great Knife).
Kriegsmesser ("war knife") are curved weapons up to 1.5m long, used with one or two hands, and normally wielded by professional warriors of the 14th to 16th century, such as the Landsknecht.

Freerk, when I first started I thought that some day I could equal your skill level.
I'm not so sure about that now.
It's easy to imagine that what you is attainable to someone with a forge and a anvil. (Im building a power hammer like yours. ) The truth is that you are the master
You know exactly what you need and when its needed. at 66 I don't have enough time left to even come close. I'm still trying, but the reality is it would take years and equipment that I have no room for.
I'm just a hobbyist and this is still great fun trying.

Awesome! Kinda reminds me of a falchion. Lovely handle, I just love Padouk. It's so nice to work with (smells really good while doing so, too!) and the grain is just.. I don't know, depth is the wrong word, but it's just captivating in some way.

As a german i can say you, it is clearly a Messer, because Messer is simply a knife. A Messer with such a large and thick blade would be called Standhauer by huntsmen. Before the word ,Machete' became popular also im my country, Machetes had been called Hauer or Buschmesser, another knife for similar use is the billhook, for this tool in every german language region another name is used, Hippe and Gertel are common.
For a german ,messer knife' is rather funny, like ,casque Stahlhelm' i heared i heared in the video of a French man. Also the wrong use of german grammar is rather funny. Singular: das große Messer, dem großen Messer, des großen Messers. Plural: die großen Messer, den großen Messern, der großen Messer.

By what I understand the process is called annealing, it cools the steel very slowly so it is softer and more workable.
As for the powder composition I don't know what is it exactly, I'm guessing some talc based magnesium with some inert components that prevent hard scaling. Freerk please elighten us :)

Nice big nife, but I wouldn't call it a Messer. From my understanding it is nearly twice as thick in the blade as it should be. And it seems to miss the Nagel. Not sure if it would handle correctly. It also seems to be on the shorter side compared to the short Messer I know about.
Obviously inspired by your big bowie knifes.

    • @freerkwieringa275
      @freerkwieringa275  6 років тому +2

You do know what Messer means right? The size of the Messer varies greatly from a standard use knife to the long Messer. This version he has created is pretty similar in shape to many historical Messer as they resembled modern bowies.

We shared a shop for a few years until he died. I use a lot of different skills from different professions I am not the best in any discipline by far. I just know a little of a lot.

pretty sure it's to straighten the blade after quenching, if it's crooked or warped he only has a little bit of time to straighten it before it cools. If it cools warped he's stuck with it unless he wants to heat treat it all over again.

Eric French the wood is Padoek. The white powder is lime. I don't like talking that much. More introverted. I also prefer people not to speak in movies. It is very rare to hear a good speaker in a UA-cam film, most of them are just rambling. My moto is always "no words but deeds" as they say in Holland.
