- Forging a Messer Knife form a semi truck leaf spring.
A messer (German for "knife") is a single-edged sword with a knife-like hilt construction. While the various names are often used synonymously, messers are divided into two types:
Lange Messer ("long knifes") are one-handed swords used by Bourgeoisie (middle-class civilians) for personal self-defence.
They were about a meter long and may have evolved from the Bauernwehr ("peasant's sidearm"). They are also known as Großes Messer (Great Knife).
Kriegsmesser ("war knife") are curved weapons up to 1.5m long, used with one or two hands, and normally wielded by professional warriors of the 14th to 16th century, such as the Landsknecht.
Freerk, when I first started I thought that some day I could equal your skill level.
I'm not so sure about that now.
It's easy to imagine that what you is attainable to someone with a forge and a anvil. (Im building a power hammer like yours. ) The truth is that you are the master
You know exactly what you need and when its needed. at 66 I don't have enough time left to even come close. I'm still trying, but the reality is it would take years and equipment that I have no room for.
I'm just a hobbyist and this is still great fun trying.
Am i the only one addicted to Freerks videos?
Beautiful you seem to be getting much more comfortable working with the leaf spring
Your cutoff wheel budget must be enormous.
Another great video, thanks.
I like how he does sort of an old school revolver style handle on these.
That blade kept ringing a bell until I looked it up. I had seen it in many medieval paintings.
Truly another awesome knife. Thanks for sharing Freerk.
(
Do semi truck leaf springs grow on trees where you are from?
Lol
nah but if u watch that vid where he cuts up those leaf springs you will see he has quite a few
Awesome! Kinda reminds me of a falchion. Lovely handle, I just love Padouk. It's so nice to work with (smells really good while doing so, too!) and the grain is just.. I don't know, depth is the wrong word, but it's just captivating in some way.
Hey love your videos you're one of the best blade Smith on youtube...can you forge the sword Hawkeye used in Avengers End Game
Excelent !!! Very good job. From comodoro rivadavia chubut Argentina Patagonia !!
messer is german for knife. but its also a family name that is part of the linder messer line of knives produced in germany. if its not being made there is just a knife
See, that's what I said on the last video. We're getting into the bowie sword realm here. Oh, and at 20:00 it's cool to see that you're a rebel just for kicks hahaha
I want to see you melt down a bunch of poor quality ebay knives and make a semi truck leaf spring.
KudoT lol. To go full circle.
aha at last,you laugh!
Can you imagine if the Chinese took this attitude of crafting in their manufacturing process?
just missing the nagel
And distal taper. I wonder what the point of balance is?
Hey brother, what is that powder that you put it to normalize? (it was that, right?)
Great work man! Cheers from Brazil!!
Amazing video
Uma verdadeira obra de arte! Ariquemes Rondônia Brasil 🇧🇷 manda um forte abraço!
Very nice work. How long does it take you manufacture of knives?
y'know wut i like? the koch messers ;D
That's not a knife. THAT's a knife
Hello! Do you sell this knife or similar? Is it possible to deliver to Russia?
i think so, i use fedex, for prices mail: freerkwieringa@gmail.com
The most beautiful Bowie knife that I ever see! Congratulations, Mr. Wieringa!
Excellent work.
Now that's a real knoife.
Great work
Now that is a substantial knife. No breaking that. How heavy is it?
Lol. Those skinny arms must not spend much time at the anvil.
Its not a messer. It has no crossguard or "nail" to protect the hand.
Unless the name implies that if he has to use it you will get messed up. Lol.
As a german i can say you, it is clearly a Messer, because Messer is simply a knife. A Messer with such a large and thick blade would be called Standhauer by huntsmen. Before the word ,Machete' became popular also im my country, Machetes had been called Hauer or Buschmesser, another knife for similar use is the billhook, for this tool in every german language region another name is used, Hippe and Gertel are common.
For a german ,messer knife' is rather funny, like ,casque Stahlhelm' i heared i heared in the video of a French man. Also the wrong use of german grammar is rather funny. Singular: das große Messer, dem großen Messer, des großen Messers. Plural: die großen Messer, den großen Messern, der großen Messer.
That is a beautiful beast. I want one! 😮🫨😲😃👍
This is not a Messer - a Messer has a nagel, a spike protruding from the guard.
No nagel?
beautiful work sir.
não me canso de ver o seus videos; e um belo trabalho!
This is an German Long Knife Circa 1510 A D ( Deusches Langmesser ) i like your make alot.
Bello!!! Bravo un gran bel coltello ne. Che acciaio ha usato? Grazie.
beautiful knife mate, also how can you wear such a nice jumper in the workshop :D
Where do you sell these works of art? And do you ship to USA?
Steven Rice I sell them directly. I make them on commission. For ordering freerkwieringa@gmail.com I do ship to the USA.
Cool. Looks a bit heavy, any reason you went without a fuller on this one?
Love it. I think that you and Brotherbanzai should collaborate that would be great
Beutiful work.
What kind of wood is that? Its got gorgeous color
I am pretty sure it is padauk.
Can you do a video on some of the tools you use
Thanks Sam
God damn that's a good lookin piece of steel!!!
Amazing
anyone know what the bolster is made from
Tu travail trop bien mec 👍
wow ,i like it.
What kind of steel are those leaf springs??? Your work is beautiful!
6150 steel
Another great work, thanks for the entertainment and instruction.
At 6:40 are you quenching the blade or nomalizing it? What is that white powder on the tank?
Thank you.
By what I understand the process is called annealing, it cools the steel very slowly so it is softer and more workable.
As for the powder composition I don't know what is it exactly, I'm guessing some talc based magnesium with some inert components that prevent hard scaling. Freerk please elighten us :)
it is lime
Nice
can u plz make the book of Eli machete
Excelente
wow man thats cool
Nice big nife, but I wouldn't call it a Messer. From my understanding it is nearly twice as thick in the blade as it should be. And it seems to miss the Nagel. Not sure if it would handle correctly. It also seems to be on the shorter side compared to the short Messer I know about.
Obviously inspired by your big bowie knifes.
Hannes Schnaitter yes it is a Messer inspired bowie. But I have to give it a title
You do know what Messer means right? The size of the Messer varies greatly from a standard use knife to the long Messer. This version he has created is pretty similar in shape to many historical Messer as they resembled modern bowies.
super super super
It so nice, top job 👍👍👍
Awesome
I want to buy this knife or one like it. How can i contact you for purchase inquiries??
at freerkwieringa@gmail.com
nice
Awesome blade where can I get one?
How long did this take?
May I ask at what at age you were apprenticed? Probably by a master.
William Austin I did art school. Before that I was a commercial drawer/artist. After art school I made steel sculpture and kinetic art. I still do. I met a black Smith when I was 25 or so. We shared a shop for a few years until he died. I use a lot of different skills from different professions I am not the best in any discipline by far. I just know a little of a lot.
But will it cut?
What’s the point of clamping the hot metal in the vice? Does it flatten the surface evenly?
pretty sure it's to straighten the blade after quenching, if it's crooked or warped he only has a little bit of time to straighten it before it cools. If it cools warped he's stuck with it unless he wants to heat treat it all over again.
okami amaterasu Thank you
Are any of these available for purchase?
for prices: freerkwieringa@gmail.com
That's a short sword or a machete not a knife.
What does putting it in the box of "powder" do ?
stuart smyth slows down the heating process so it’s easier to drill into. Kind of like reverse heat treating
stuart smyth it normalizes the metal and anneals it.
Iski price kiya he
👏👏👏👏👏👍 muito bom
Bealtiful
Mr. Wieringa you sell yours molds about bowies knives on PDF for email?
What is this flour? Is it a kind of powder or wheat flour or what is it?
it is lime
Como Fasso pra adquirir uma de suas facas . ??? Consegue enviar aqui no Brasil.?
I want it
Make a kukri please
رائع جدا ً
Can you give for me
That looks like diatomaceous earth that you are annealing in.
The wood resembles hedge apple (Osage Orange)
Why you never say hello?
Tell us about yourself?
Give us a history of Freerk?
Smile?
To not be like everybody else. Also he is swedish, so i assume he speaks english but maybe not comfortable enough for videos.
Tony Quattro I was asking Freerk for facts, not random people for assumptions. But thanks anyway my friend.
hes dutch :P
here is his website www.freerkwieringa.nl/
Eric French the wood is Padoek. The white powder is lime. I don't like talking that much. More introverted. I also prefer people not to speak in movies. It is very rare to hear a good speaker in a UA-cam film, most of them are just rambling. My moto is always "no words but deeds" as they say in Holland.
