I found this knife at a yard sale. It was dirty and the handle and blade looked old. I was curious, so I bought it for just $2. I wanted to make it look good again, so I started fixing it.
First, I used a brush to scrub off the dirt and rust, and it started to look better.
Then, I rubbed the sandpaper on the blade until it looked shiny and sharp.
Next, I worked on the handle. It was made of wood and looked really old. After removing brass peens, the handles fall apart. I used sandpaper to make new wood handles smooth. After that, I put linseed oil on it watched as the wood transformed, revealing a rich, vibrant grain.
When I finished, I was amazed at how good the knife looked. It was nothing like before. It was now a beautiful thing that I am proud of. It showed me that sometimes, things that seem old and forgotten can become amazing again if we take care of them.

Excelente, gracias por compartir tus conocimientos. Un fuerte abrazo desde Bogotá Colombia y mil bendiciones 🙏
Excellent restoration, and without electricity, without radios blaring away. Just a skilled artisan quietly working at his trade, without any noisy distraction. This is how I imagine serial killers prepare.😂
Thank you kindly!
🤣
This is a man who is invaluable in a grid-down scenario. He's one of very few who has the tools and knowledge to keep things working.
😀👍
He’d be lost without his fancy electric light.
@@mm9773 you forgot fancy cameras 🤣
I have a neurological problem that affects my hands and using power tools like drills, saws and belt sanders is quite dangerous. I am actually frightened to use them now as I have had a few minor accidents but I like maintaining my home myself and am quite good at it and take my time unlike the average tradesmen. My house is old and was built with hand tools so, I am aiming to invest in some good old fashioned hand power tools to replace my electric ones like the ones here. Very inspirational.
Hello.
I'm from South Africa and I can tell you that a lot of what you see there isn't arcane or lost secret knowledge, but just good sense.
In my country we've had serious problems with the national power grid for decades. Instead of fixing the problems, corrupt politicians embezzled funds and things got worse. Presently we have multiple 2-4 hour nation wide blackouts every day which often don't stick to any schedule.
You can imagine the effect this had on our industries. Many South Africans just gave up, some adapted.
Yes, his hand (and foot) powered tools make things quicker and easier, but I csn bed you this guy could have got to the same result with a knife, a few rusty nails, files and some sandpaper. It would've taken forever, but he'd get there. It's not his knowledge or fancy human-powered tools which get things done, it's his resolve to make a difference.
grid-down scenarios aren't hypothetical, they are common in my country and possible to likely in yours. You can sit waiting for things to get better or make a plan...
I’m watching this in the uk and looking at all these belt driven tools reminds me so dearly of my grandfather’s workshop in the 70s. Thanks for this trip down memory lane and I think it’s so great you’re keeping these things alive!
That is so wonderful to hear sir! Thank you kindly for the feedback! I created this channel to honor our grandfather who did so much of hard work and never complained. Have a nice day ahead 🤗
The shop just gets better and better over time. World class for it's uniqueness. I love all the hand and foot powered machines!! You even dress the part. Very impressive all around. Nice work on the knife as well.
Thank you my dear friend! I appreciate that you take time to watch my videos and being always supportive! Stay safe!
The day there will never be electricity again, you will have to have this guy as friends
😃👍
Ive been a butcher for 40 years and nothing I like better than a nice, quality knife
Just judging by the blade itself, that knife has seen many years of use and care
Totally 👍
Possibly but then again the person may have not known what they’re doing I’ve seen it happen before
There is not much left indeed 😂…. Lovely video though!
A really good book "The Blade Itself"
Congratulations you now have a polished $2 knife. 👍🏻
☺️
That's right, just a knife for $2, and almost a million views on UA-cam. great job!
I love getting old tools and restoring them. I can't stand watching them go to the dump.
That is the way to go, thank you!
Oh my, years I've played on UA-cam, thousands of Restoration’s I've watched, but wow, I've finally come across your channel. What a stunning workshop you have, and what a skill set you have developed.
I am so pleased you saved that hard worked knife, and in such a sympathetic way.
Thank you for not destroying your video with a hideous overlaid music track. First video of yours I've seen and it's an instant sub.
Just superb sir.
Thank you.
Wow, you left me speechless sir. Thank you for kind words and subscription! I appreciate that a lot! Take care!
Your workshop is an absolute dream! Pedal-driven tools! Marvelous! Congratulations mate!
Thank you so much for your kind words mate! I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the workshop and the pedal-driven tools. Your encouragement means a lot to me. Is there a particular tool or aspect of the workshop that caught your interest the most? I'd love to hear more about your thoughts!
@@FFD_Restorations I pretty much like all of your machines! But the lathe caught my attention. And the Dremel tool that I saw in another video.

What an amazing workshop.
I can’t get over the self powered lathe section, that’s pretty dope to see.
You left you're DNA on the knife😮
☺️
That old cracked, smooth patinated wood looked so good. Like a pirate's treasure chest of old
Shop straight out of 1900. Good stuff.
Awesome ☺️👍

Excellent work. Thanks
Cool! Thank you too!
From 2$ to 200$ value for this knife, the tools used are really fantastic, only need the power of the user, tools from a time when we took the time to do a good job.
Nice vidéo !
Much appreciated, thank you kindly 👍

A rotary extension attached to a turning chuck...
Will wonders never cease?
So far works great. It shouldn't be any problem if is regularly oiled.

It's definitely going into my mental tool box. If it works, it works.

Top shelf restoration youngster. The shop also. Enjoy yourself, I do.
Wow, thanks again! Very kind of you sir!
Refreshing to see someone use off grid tools to restore pieces of history and give them a new life! Guess with all the modern marvels of technology everyone has forgotten how power tools were used before everyone had access to electricity. I stumbled across your channel by chance and now i am a fan! Definite subscribe from me!
Thank you kindly, I appreciate subscription! Take care!
Really an Artistic job.
😀👍
You gotta be shittin me. This man even has a step powered lathe. Probably the first i ve seen even on video. Really good job of making use of such old style tools and doing great work with them. Not many people around like you to showcase old machines and techniques from way back in the day. Keep it going. Im definitely subbing to see more.
Thank you kindly for the support and subscription 🙏
I will 😊
Me too.
Very nice video, I worked in a machine shop in barre Vermont that still had belt feed machines . We’re all converted to run on electricity. But brought me back to that time working with that old equipment. Thank you.
MASTERPIECE!
😀👍👍👍👍
I like very much your stylish environment and your precise work.
Somebody evidently valued that inexpensive knife, and used it regularly. You've just made it into an inexpensive revived knife, with years more life in it. Nice one, Boris. Your patience with those cheap bolsters was exemplary. 👍
For sure it was a great knife to someone in the past and seeing it it was used that much i knew I had to save it. The memories that this knife created to its owner are more valuable for me than the knife itself.
@@FFD_Restorations Dead right, Boris! 👌
That is my dream shop right there.
🤗
I really enjoyed watching you restore that old knife. What an education on how furniture reparations were fine at the turn of the last century.
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback 👍
Beautiful work and what a shop. WOW
@shirlmiester Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled that you appreciate the work and the shop. Your encouragement means a lot to me. By the way, have you ever come across a similar shop or artwork that left a lasting impression on you? I'd love to hear about your experiences!
"Restore and Stay Calm" - your videos and especially your shop are incredible.
Glad you like them! Thank you kindly ☺️
Wow, such craftsmanship. Well done sir. Anyone else get that Jeffrey/Dexter vibe?..
Thank you kindly 🤗
Another fun restoration. I collect old fixed blades and restore them also. In addition, I buy Norwegian and Finnish blades and make the hafts myself. Thanks. 🔪🎸
Very cool! I'm glad to hear that 👍
Keep up the great work!
I appreciate watching ☺️
That knife had many years of use, sharpened many times. Many more years of use ahead, hope somebody uses it.

a very impressive and sympathetic restoration of a very hard used knife, that knife has done much hard work and deserves your treatment of it, well done
It truly did, I'm glad I restored the knife. Awesome, thank you so much 👍
I believe that a laboratory like yours doesn't exist in the whole world!
Thank you!
Oh man, that thing was not a file, is an entire documentary 😂
Old filet knife looks like a high end piece of cutlery. Bravo to beautiful work and great to see old timers shop equipment rather than loud machines
Thank you kindly 🤗
This dude is freaking talented. I certainly can appreciate his work with hand tools. I respect his skill and care in his craftsmanship for sure.

This is the definition of hand crafted excellence with only muscle powered tools . Stellar job on an 1878 La Trompette boning knife that should last another 145 years. Nice job Boris , thanks for showing an authentic hand restoration .

Wow, thank you kindly!
@@FFD_Restorations you’re welcome!
Love this video. I love the fact that you did all of this without harsh chemicals, fancy electric tools and no overexplanation. My hat is off to you. There is a great deal we could all learn from you. Thank you.

😅
That was so satisfying watching you use all those hand and foot powered tools
